EDNA O. AH MU
Edna O. Ah Mu, 67, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Ah Mu was born April 19, 1930, in Tepuna, Tauranga, New Zealand, and had lived in Independence since 1972. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Third Ward, Independence Stake. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Christel Ah Mu Davis in 1995.
Her survivors include her husband, Richard Ah Mu of the home; three daughters, Louisa J. Thompson and Katherine S. Wilkins, both of Independence, and Melba A. Ah Mu, Gladstone, Mo.; three sons, Richard Fruean Ah Mu, Overland Park, Kan., Oliver Ormsby Ah Mu, Wheaton, Ill., and Joseph David Ah Mu, Orem, Utah; two brothers, William Ormsby, Tauranga, and Richard Ormsby, Adelaide, Australia; two sisters, Ada McTainsh, Tauranga, and Terina Ormsby, Kansas City; and 12 grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5609 Norfleet, Kansas City. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
JOHN D. CHANDLER
John David Chandler, 55, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Chandler was born April 2, 1942, in Florence, Ala., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a welder and a member of the Local 10 Ironworkers Union. He had been a member of the Parkville Masonic Lodge and was of the Baptist faith.
His survivors include his wife, Priscilla L. Chandler of the home; a daughter, Diana Lynn White, Blue Springs; two sons, Ricky David Chandler and John Wayne Chandler, both of Independence; his parents, John and Ruth Chandler, Warsaw, Mo.; two brothers, Harold W. Chandler, Independence, and Don Chandler, Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Linda Sue Close, Independence; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
MARY K. "KATHY" CURRY
Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Curry, 62, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Curry was born in Tuscumbia, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area for the past 30 years. She has been a legal secretary with the Watson, Ess, Marshall, Engass law firm. She was an 11-year member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Preceptor Iota Chapter, where she had received the Order of the Rose, held most offices, attained the highest degree Laureate and had been elected Woman of the Year, twice. She was of the Assembly of God faith.
Her survivors include her husband, Robert L. Curry of the home; five sons, Chief Petty Officer Steven Myers, Virginia Beach, Va., David Myers, Raytown, Michael Curry, R.N., Independence, Dr. Mark Curry, Olathe, Kan., and Marlan Curry, Spring, Texas; two daughters, Debra Hergott, Overland Park, Kan., and Michelle Bennes, Valparaiso, Fla.; her mother and stepfather, Jo and Wesley Pfeifer, Blue Springs; a brother, Terry Pfeifer, Houston; a sister, Patricia Pryor, Tuscumbia; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, with a second service being held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Tuscumbia Christian Church. Burial will be in Tuscumbia cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel, where Beta Sigma Phi prayer services will be held at 8:30 p.m.
ELLEN KNOEPKER
Ellen McCrorey Knoepker, 87, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Knoepker was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Upton, Wyo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was cashier/buyer for Knoepker Clothing. Her husband, Henry Melvin Knoepker, died in 1983.
Her survivors include a sister, Ruth Luckey, Brownsburg, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Vera Gordon, Thornton, Colo.; and seven nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 10a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn cemetery. Private visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.
EFFIE M. MAYFIELD
Effie Marie Mayfield, 98, Belton, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Beautiful Savior Home and Manor in Belton.
Miss Mayfield was born April 20, 1899, in Polk County, Mo., and had lived in Independence for more than 60 years. She was a power machine operator for Rosmin Coat Co., and later worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a Baptist and a member of the Golden Age Club.
Her survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rock Prairie cemetery, Pleasant Hope, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
DOROTHY M. MOORE
Dorothy Margaret Moore, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Moore was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Carrollton, Mo., and had been an area resident for 59 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn H. Moore.
Her survivors include two sons, Ronald Moore and Glen Earl Moore; three daughters, Joyce Jean Sisson, Janet Ruth Berger and Patricia Kay Moore; two brothers, Harold Wright and J.V. Wright; two sisters, Phyllis Post and Ruth Wilson; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.
BLANCHE C. NORRIS
Blanche C. Norris, 102, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at The Groves.
Mrs. Norris was born Feb. 16, 1896, in Pottawatomie County, Iowa, was raised in Holden, Mo., and was a longtime resident of the Lawrence, Kan., and Kansas City areas. She was a 1952 graduate of Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, was a teacher for many years in the Lawrence School District, and taught in the Woodlawn and New York school districts, retiring in 1957. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was active until 1984. She was a longtime member of the N.E.A. and K.S.T.A., enjoyed writing poetry and had written a book, Memories of One Life Spanning the 20th Century of Mid America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilson R. Norris, and three sons, Glendon and Everett Norris, and Wayne Holmes.
Her survivors include four daughters, Janice Fountain and Lois Brewster, both of Independence, Donna Sintz, Charlotte, N.C., and Lorraine Yeubanks, Tulsa, Okla.; four sons, Claude, Independence, and Waldon, Donald and Gerald, all of Lawrence; a sister, Bessie Taylor; 32 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Lawrence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. The family suggests contributions to the Foundation for Research on Ancient America or donor`s choice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
KEVIN J. OAKES
Kevin John Oakes, 33, Mexico, Mo., formerly of Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Oakes was born March 29, 1964, in Mexico and lived in Mexico most of his life, except for a few years in Blue Springs. He worked at American Auto Parts and was a member of the St. Brendan Catholic Church in Mexico.
His survivors include two sons, Billy Oakes and Joshua Oakes, a daughter, Jessica Oakes, and his parents, Gerald and Florence Oakes, all of Mexico; his grandmother, Rose Troesser, Martinsburg, Mo.; two brothers, Michael Oakes and Timothy Oakes, both of Mexico; and two sisters, Mary Oakes Milligan, Columbia, Mo., and Jennifer Oakes Fairchild, Mexico.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. Brendan cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at the Arnold Funeral Home, Mexico, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to a trust fund for his children.
DOROTHY A. VAUGHN
Dorothy Agnes Vaughn, 82, Cole Camp, Mo., died Monday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia, Mo.
Mrs. Vaughn was born June 27, 1915, in Jackson County. She was a member of the Lakeview Heights Neighborhood Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hyman J. Vaughn in 1984, and a stepdaughter, Phylis Keeton in 1992.
Her survivors include four daughters, Patricia Shearer, Judith Keplinger and Sharon Davis, all of Independence, and Melba Sharp, Cole Camp; a son, Kenneth Vaughn, Osceola, Mo.; a sister, Lucille Wacaser, Independence; 26 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
McKAYLA PEREZ
McKayla Perez, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Perez of Independence, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
McKayla was born March 23, 1999, in Kansas City.
Her survivors also include a sister, Ciera Perez of the home; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Bev Ross, and paternal grandparents, Joe and Shirley Perez, all of Independence; maternal great-grandparents, the Rev. Logan Collins, Kansas City, and Marcie Boller, Brookfield, Mo.; and her paternal great-grandparents, Doris Berge and Jesse Perez, both of Independence.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel.
OMAR W. NADLER
Omar William Nadler, 83, Wellington, Mo., died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Nadler was born Jan. 5, 1916, in Femme Osage, Mo. He worked for the Wulfekammer Mercantile Store in Wellington for 3 1/2 years prior to entering the service. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre and in Africa. He was the owner/operator of the Nadler Locker Plant, Wellington, from 1946 to 1966, and was also a substitute mail carrier during these years. In1966, he went to work at Richards Gebauer Air Force Base in the commissary department as a meat cutter for 11 years. He was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Church, Wellington, serving as president and secretary of the Church Council for six years. He was a charter member and past president of the Wellington Lions Club, and a life member of the Borgman-Osthoff American Legion Post, serving as commander for seven years. He had served on the Wellington Fair Board for 20 years.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret Sehrt Nadler of the home; one daughter, Sylvia Faye Nadler, Liberty, Mo.; and one son and daughter-in-law, Randy Ray and Robin Nadler, two granddaughters, and two step grandsons, all of Blue Springs.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. Luke cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Walker-Nadler Chapel, Wellington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church or the Omar William Nadler Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund at William Jewell College, Liberty.
HAZEL F. MONAHAN
Hazel Faye Monahan, 81, Lee`s Summit, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Lone Jack cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
THOMAS C. "T.R." REID
Thomas C. "T.R." Reid, 55, Grandview, Mo., died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Reid was a retired Kansas City Police Officer and most recently the golf course superintendent of River Oaks Golf Club, Grandview, and a member of the GCSAA. He was an avid golfer who competed for River Oaks Golf Club during the Kansas City Cup matches.
His survivors include his ex-wife, Sally Reid of the home; and a son, Devin Reid, Lee`s Summit; and a brother, James Reid, Juneau, Alaska.
Services will be 7 p.m. Friday at the River Oaks Golf Course Club House in Grandview, 14204 St. Andres Drive. Arrangements are under the direction of Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit.
EVERETT H. ALLISON
Everett Hampton Allison, 85, Elizabeth, Colo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Columbia Swedish Hospital in Englewood, Colo.
Mr. Allison was born Oct. 3, 1912, in Kansas City, Kan., and had lived in Independence for many years. He was a nationally ranked high school track athlete at Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, Kan. He set numerous local, regional and state records in both the 220 yard low hurdles and the one mile relay. His track career culminated at the 1931 National Interscholastic Meet held at the University of Chicago, where he took the national fourth place in hurdles and set the national record for the one mile relay as anchor. He later went to the University of Kansas, Lawrence, having been awarded a track scholarship, where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
He became a commercial pilot for Pan American Grace Airways, and was stationed out of Lima, Peru. Near the end of World War II, he transitioned to test pilot for the Douglas Aircraft Co. and test flew a variety of aircraft, including the DC-2, 2A and DC-3. Later, he became senior project engineer for the Vendo Co. in Kansas City. He was a member of the Restoration Church.
His survivors include his wife of 56 years, Juanita M. Priest Allison, Elizabeth; a son, Maj. Randal K. Allison, Clifton, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jan Renee and James W. Bramer, Elizabeth; a brother, Nelson W. Allison, Prairie Village, Kan.; two granddaughters, Dana Jill Moritz and Allison Nicole Peterson; a great-granddaughter, Zoe Peterson; and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were Wednesday at the Elizabeth cemetery.
MARTHA O. BOGGESS
Martha Olivetta Boggess, 81, Independence, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the Cedar Valley Care Center.
Mrs. Boggess was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Plattsmouth, Neb., and had lived in this area most of her life. She performed for many years as a professional Hammond organist, and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Margaret Montgomery, and a granddaughter, Anne S.C. Montgomery, all of Kansas City; and many other relatives.
Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Lions Club.
SUSAN C. COLE
Susan Charlene Cole, 49, Independence, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Cole was born Aug. 25, 1948, in Gordon, Neb., and had lived in this area most of her life. She attended Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, and received her master`s degree from Webster University. She worked for the Fort Osage School District for the past 21 years as a teacher for Blue Hills Elementary. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Reading Association and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Her survivors include her husband, Larry Cole, and two children, Tara and Ryan Cole, all of the home; a brother, Jim Lewis, Gehring, Neb.; and many other relatives.
Services will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Village Heights RLDS Church; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Hospice of St. Mary`s.
