BERNICE B. LOEFFLER

Bernice Boten Loeffler, 75, Lee`s Summit, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Loeffler was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Walnut, Kan. She was a member of the Lee`s Summit Christian Church, the Christian Women`s Club, Modern Seekers, Cyclone Club and the Jackson County Extension. She was a volunteer with Volunteer Services and the Auxiliary of the Lee`s Summit Hospital. She was preceded in death in 1990 by her first husband of 50 years, Lloyd O. Boten.

Her survivors include her husband, Herbert V. Loeffler of the home; her sons and their wives, L. Thomas and Mary Alice Boten, Overland Park, Kan., and Charles D. and Elaine Boten, Lee`s Summit; her daughters and son-in-law, The Rev. Peg Boten Haub, Osage Beach, Mo., Carol M. and Richard More, Stover, Mo.; Herbert`s sons, Chuck Loeffler, Lenexa, Kan., and Larry Loeffler, Independence; a sister, Cleta Decker, Lee`s Summit; a brother, Bernard Davisson, Steelville, Mo.; five grandchildren, Terry More, Todd More, Stephanie Banning, Mark Haub and Lindsay Boten; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lee`s Summit Christian Church. Burial will be in Floral Hills East. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church.

MARJORIE M. NYSTROM

Marjorie M. Nystrom, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Nystrom was born June 28, 1918, in Stet, Mo., and lived most of her life in Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest F. Nystrom in 1986.

Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Terry Austin, Independence, and Cheryl and Paul Catlett, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a son, Carl Nystrom; two sisters, Francis Gilmore, Norborne, Mo., and Leola Hatfield, Liberty, Mo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Shawn Catlett Muscular Dystrophy Fund, in care of the Pleasant Hill Bank, P.O. Box 430, Pleasant Hill, Mo. 64080.

WILLIAM R. STEARNS

William Roy Stearns, 77, Independence, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Stearns was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Everett, Wash. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as secretary to the headquarters commandant of the North African Theater of Operations in Algiers, Algeria, and later as chief clerk in the Allied Forces Headquarters in Caserta, Italy, serving 34 months overseas. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

After the war, he attended Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa. He was called to serve in 1950 by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He worked as executive secretary to the Council of Twelve until 1972 when he became World Church secretary and executive assistant to the first presidency until his retirement in 1982. He was minister of music for seven years at the RLDS Stone Church, and was an accomplished tenor soloist and organist in the church and community circles. He was a volunteer in several organizations in the Independence area.

His survivors include his wife, Meurial R. Richardson Stearns of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randall Mark and Grace Stearns, Lenexa, Kan., and Brent Alan and Marilyn Stearns, Raytown; a sister, Laura Davis, Centralia, Wash.; and four grandchildren, Drew, Sean, Jacob and Laura.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Monday at the RLDS Stone Church. The family suggests contributions to the church or the Temple Endowment Fund.

HOWARD K. BENCE

Retired Captain Howard K. Bence, 73, Blue Springs, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Captain Howard was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Kansas City, Kan. He attended Northeast High School and served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He was a reserve policeman in Raytown. He worked with the Boy Scouts of America from 1953 to 1961. He was a life member and past commander of the American Legion Post 499, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Ararat Shrine, and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a superintendent for Machinery Spare Parts for 22 years before his retirement in 1991. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Davis.

His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jeanne Bence of the home; two sons, Brian Bence, Blue Springs, and Roger Bence, San Bernardino, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Brianna Bence and Melissa Bence.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Shrine Hospital for crippled children in St. Louis, in care of Ararat Shrine, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, Mo. 64129.

F. MARIE CARTER

F. Marie Blocher Carter, 59, Buenos Aires, Argentina, formerly of Lee`s Summit, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at British Hospital, Buenos Aires.

Mrs. Carter was born June 28, 1938, in Adrian, Mo. She was commissioned a missionary by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1986, and with her husband, V. Richard Carter, was serving as witness and teacher, student worker and mission hostess at the time of her death. The Villa Centenario Church and its affiliated school were a special part of her ministry. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. She earned a master`s degree in education from Central Missouri State University. Prior to the foreign missions appointment, she was a teacher at Hazel Grove Elementary School in Lee`s Summit.

Her survivors include her husband of 38 years, V. Richard Carter of the home; a son, Jeffrey Carter, Lawrence, Kan.; two daughters, Karen Marie Carter Riffle, Holden, Mo., and Elizabeth "Beth" Carter Myers, Lee`s Summit; three grandchildren, Blayne and Kristen Riffle and Anna Myers; her mother, Ruth Blocher, Adrian; a brother, Edwin Blocher Jr., Leeds, Ala.; and an aunt, Esther Marie Summers.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Lee`s Summit cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. The family suggests contributions to the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Development Office, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230, in honor of Marie Carter.

MARY L. MANN

Mary Lou Mann, 85, Oak Grove, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Community Care of Oak Grove.

She was born in Oak Grove on July 19, 1912, and was a lifelong area resident.

Her survivors include family and friends at Community Care of Oak Grove.

Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Six Mile cemetery, Sibley. Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.

FRANCES L. WELLS

Frances L. Wells, 73, Kansas City, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Mrs. Wells was born April 21, 1924, in Leavenworth, Kan. She was a homemaker and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary 61, North Kansas City.

Her survivors include three daughters, Pamela Christian, Olathe, Kan., Constance Duncan, Kansas City, and Deborah Wells, Kansas City; three sisters, Betty Dennis and Margaret Ann Driscoll, both of Kansas City, Kan., and Barbara Orrick, Bonner Springs, Kan.; a brother, Richard August Klasinski, Kansas City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Chapel Hill cemetery, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.

EARL J. "JACK" LEAP

Earl Jacky "Jack" Leap, 56, Oak Grove, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Leap was born Dec. 10, 1942, in Camdenton, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City and Independence before moving to Oak Grove in 1977. He owned and operated his own dental laboratory in Oak Grove, and was the holder of two United States patents.

His survivors include his wife of 29 years, Carole Leap of the home; a son, Kim Leap, Blue Springs; three daughters, Wendy Borowski, Grain Valley, and Melissa Heath and Angela Tapia, both of Oak Grove; a brother, Murrell L. Leap, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a sister, Audrey Goodman, Kansas City; his mother and father, Betty and James Perry; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence.

JOSEPH O. PROCTOR

Joseph O. Proctor, 85, Kansas City, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999.

Mr. Proctor was a longtime member of Bader Memorial Christian Church and served as elder, trustee, superintendent of Sunday school and as financial secretary. He was a maintenance foreman for TWA for 36 years, and was a member of the TWA Oldtimers. He was also a member of Demolay International, and was an Army Air Corps veteran, serving from 1933 to 1937.

His survivors include his wife, Opal Proctor; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary W. and Rae Proctor, and James S. and Karen Proctor; one daughter and son-in-law, Anne J. and Lance Blue; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to Bader Memorial Christian Church, 2010 Van Brunt, Kansas City, Mo. 64127.

NORMAN T. CARLSON JR.

Norman T. Carlson Jr., 76, Independence, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Carlson was born May 9, 1921, in Michigan City, Ind., and had also lived in LaPorte, Ind., from 1952 to 1964 and Milwaukee, Wis., from 1964 to 1967 and the last 29 years in Independence. He had worked for Allis Chalmers in LaPorte, Milwaukee and Independence, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the McDonald Masonic Lodge 324, Independence, Ararat Shrine, Kansas City, and American Legion Post 21, Independence. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Gladys Grieger Carlson of the home; a daughter, Karin Timko, Independence; a son, Kurt Carlson, Oak Grove; and five grandchildren, Corey, Daniel, Vida, Samuel and Mary Carlson.

Services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Odessa Restoration Branch, 2 mile north of Missouri 131. Burial will be in Michigan City, Ind. The family requests no flowers.

GLEN H. HELM SR.

Glen H. Helm Sr., 58, Gravios Mills, Mo., died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at University Hospital, Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Helm was born Feb. 13, 1940, in Kansas City. He was a cement finisher.

His survivors include a daughter, Sheri Lancaster, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; two sons, Glen Helm Jr., Lee`s Summit, and Roy Glen Helm, Marshall, Mo.; his mother, Mary Saunders, Roeland Park, Kan.; five brothers, John Helm and Donald Helm, both of Independence, Billy Helm and Roy Helm, both of Kansas City, and James Helm, Roeland Park; five sisters, Barbara Holtgrewe, Osceola, Mo., Kathryn Harmon and Judith Green, Blue Springs, Mary Banister, Kansas City, and Janice Klassen, Mountain Lake, Minn.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

DOROTHY O. RICKETTS

Dorothy O. Ricketts, 76, Independence, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Ricketts was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Trenton, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd R. Ricketts in 1981, and a daughter, Joyce A. Parish in 1993 and a son, J.L. Ricketts in 1996.

Her survivors include two sons, Lloyd F. Ricketts Jr. and Harold R. Ricketts, both of Independence; a daughter, Joan Ricketts of the home; a sister, Lenora Keeling, Copperas Cove, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery.

EDNA M. VANBIBER

Edna Maxine Churning VanBiber, 77, Independence, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. VanBiber was born Nov. 11, 1921, near Fortescue, Mo., and had lived in Wichita, Kan.; Chicago, Detroit and Kansas City.

She attended the Fortescue branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She was a 1939 graduate of Fortescue High School, where she was active in the girls` glee club, softball and volleyball teams and was elected senior queen and class secretary.

She attended what is now Northwest Missouri State University and then taught school in rural Holt County.

She also worked as a secretary for the Boeing plant in Wichita.

She was a member of the Walnut Park RLDS Church and then the Liberty Street RLDS Church.

She and her husband then became charter members of the South Crysler RLDS Church. She helped to organize the Stake Women`s Department and also served as the first Santa Fe Stake Women`s leader. She was also active in Orioles, Orioles` Light of the Life Program, Cub and Boy Scouts, Zioneers, Zion`s League, Stake Older Youth, PTA, Graceland Mothers` Club, Young Matrons, Mothers in Israel, hospital auxiliary and Good Government League.

Her survivors include her husband of 54 years, James Taylor VanBiber; four sons, Dr. James T. VanBiber Jr., Independence, Dr. John C. VanBiber, Reno, Nev., Dr. Joseph R. VanBiber, Blue Springs, and Dr. Jeffrey M. VanBiber, Butler, Mo.; two daughters, Judith C. Meikle, Lee`s Summit, and Janet S. McCully, Independence; a brother, Fred Chuning, and two sisters, Edith Derr and Marjorie Spease, all of Independence; 13 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Blue Springs Restoration Branch, 5555 Valley View Road, Blue Springs. Friends may call from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Gift of Hope Hospice Fund, 300 N. Osage, Independence, Mo. 64050.
