VANN E. PETWAY
Vann E. Petway, 55, Blue Springs, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at his home.
He was born June 18, 1944, in Elm City, N.C. He was a computer specialist and field engineer for the Decision One Co. He was an Army and Air Force veteran, and a member of Ameri-can Legion Post 499. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, a 33rd degree Mason and a Shriner. He volunteered and coached baseball and football for the American Legion in Blue Springs for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Petway of the home; two sons, Bryan E. Petway of the home, and Vann Eric Petway in the U.S. Navy; three daughters, Silinda Y. Bomar, Grain Valley, Florence R. Petway of the home, and Yvonne Petway, Blue Springs; four sisters, Reva Morris, Randallstown, Md., and Essie Bell Petway, Piccolia Ross and Etta Wells, all of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Donnie Petway, Charlotte, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Grave-side services with military honors will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the church.
GENEVIEVE S. FERRELL
Genevieve Sue Love Ferrell, 56, Willow Brook, Ill., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at her home.
Ms. Ferrell was a 1959 graduate of William Chrisman High School, and a 1963 graduate of Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. She also received her master`s degree in elementary education from CMSU, and taught at Alton and Procter elementary schools in Independence. She had been a trustee of the Township of Willow Springs, Ill., and had worked for the Illinois Toll Roads.
Her survivors include two daughters, Whitney Ferrell, Willow Springs, and Patti Ferrell, Coralville, Iowa; her mother, Dena Love, and one sister, Pam Hudson, both of Independence; and one brother, Gary Love, Grain Valley.
Services will be held in Willow Brook.
HARLEY L. "BING" BARGER
Harley L. "Bing" Barger, 79, Independence, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, in the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Barger was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Goodson, Mo., and had lived in this area for most of his life. He was a pipefitter with Pipefitters Local 533 for more than 50 years. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge 76. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald N. Barger Sr. in 1996.
His survivors include his wife, Doris Barger of the home; a son, Dennis D. Barger, Overland Park, Kan.; four grandchildren, Ronald N. Barger Jr., J. Lee Barger, Whitney Beaver and Austin Phillips.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Masonic Home of Western Missouri, 12101 E. Bannister Road, Kansas City, Mo. 64138.
MICHAEL L. COEN
Michael Lee Coen, 39, Blue Springs, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Coen was born May 30, 1958, in Lexington, Mo. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. He worked 17 years at Lake City, where he was an operations technician.
His survivors include his wife, Mia Coen; a stepdaughter, Randilyn Coen; and twin sons, Robert and Adam, all of the home; his mother, Millie, and his brother, John Stephen, both of Lexington.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church with a visitation following at the church. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Hospice, 201 R.D. Mize Road, Blue Springs, Mo. 64014. The body was donated to the University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City.
GARY L. COMSTOCK
Gary L. Comstock, 59, Independence, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Park Lane Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Comstock was born Jan. 8, 1939, in Versailles, Mo. He was retired from General Motors and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 93. He later worked at Builders Square in Kansas City. He was an Army veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Ella Mae Purl Comstock of the home; two sons, Earnest Hibdon, Oak Grove, and Gary Comstock, Gladstone, Mo.; two daughters, Teenia Small, Independence, and Paula Gregston, Blue Springs; two brothers, Charley Comstock, Versailles, and Johnny Comstock, Benton, Tenn.; three sisters, Sue Riley, Mayfield, Ky., Kathy Johnson, Gower, Mo., and Denise Bowers, Versailles; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. Burial will be in the Versailles cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home.
RICHARD M. "DICK" LAYDEN
Richard M. "Dick" Layden, 83, Independence, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Layden was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Kansas City, Kan., and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a 1933 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He worked with his brother, Thomas, as a carpenter prior to his employment as a carpenter for Sears and Roebuck for 30 years. He was a member of St. Mark`s Catholic Church, Ace of Clubs, Carpenter`s Local 1329, and American Legion Post 21. He was a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael.
His survivors include his wife, Betty Layden of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Beth Layden, Oskaloosa, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathie and Kim Nagel, Independence; a sister, Catherine Davis, Cameron, Mo., and eight grandchildren, Jason, Patrick, Casey, Chrissy, Korey, Jeremy, Jessica and David.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel, where the rosary will be said following the visitation.
CLAUDE E. O`DELL SR.
Claude Emery O`Dell Sr., 85, Independence, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Deerbrook Health Care Center.
Mr. O`Dell was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Atherton, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a farmer for many years. He also worked for 20 years for the Jackson County Highway Department before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Walnut Park RLDS Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence O`Dell in 1993.
His survivors include two daughters, Margie Zabor, Independence, and Donna Ewing, Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Jerry O`Dell, Independence, and Claude O`Dell Jr., Apache Junction, Ariz.; a brother, Glenn O`Dell, Independence; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Independence Regional Hospice.
VIRGINIA L. SPRADLEY
Virginia Lee Spradley, 74, Whittier, Calif., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at the Whittier Presbyterian Hospital.
Her survivors include her husband, Donal Scot Spradley of the home; one daughter, Dana Yarnell, Anaheim, Calif.; one brother, Dr. Joseph Pearce, Rolla, Mo.; and two grandsons, Scot and Gene Yarnell.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier. Burial will be at Rose Hill on the Terrace of Hope, Whittier. ROBERT D. WREN
Robert D. Wren, 70, Independence, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Wren was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a plumber and a member of Plumbers Union Local 8. He was ordained a deacon on Oct. 14, 1984, for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Barbara A. Wren of the home; two daughters, Gaye Garcia and Joi Tittle, both of Independence; a son, Brett Wren, Grain Valley; a brother, Thomas Wren, Wichita, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
Cremation. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. May 3 at the Grain Valley RLDS Church, corner of Buckner-Tarsney and Pink Hill roads. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs Hospice or to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
ROBERT W. ALLEN
Robert William Allen, 71, Independence, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Allen was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Sugar Creek, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a self-employed contractor, and an Army veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Bernice Allen of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Ron Boyd, Carmel, Ind., Beverly and Ron Hendrix, Overland Park, Kan., and Becky and Larry Elkins, Independence; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Teresa Allen, Lee`s Summit; two brothers, Raymond Allen, Independence, and Larry Allen, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; three sisters, Lorene Lass and Lois Joy Eaten, both of Sugar Creek, and Margie Rucker, Blue Springs; and seven grandchildren, Brian Boyd, Ann Hendrix, Ronald Hendrix, Jennifer Elkins, Katie Elkins, Christy Allen and Robert Jason Allen.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. JOHN S. BURGOMASTER
John S. Burgomaster, 47, Marshall, Mo., died Monday, June 22, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Burgomaster was born June 14, 1951, in Minneapolis, and lived in Sweet Springs, Mo., before moving to Marshall in 1971. He worked for ConAgra Frozen Foods in Marshall, and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Marshall.
His survivors include one brother, N. Fredrick Burgomaster, Indianapolis; two sisters, Marion Koczur, Independence, and Kathleen Marley, Arlington, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Campbell-Lewis Chapel, Marshall. Burial will be in Ridge Park cemetery, Marshall. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church or the Marshall Ministerial Alliance.
AUBREY L. "Tod" COLE
Aubrey L. "Tod" Cole, 70, Oak Grove, died Monday, June
22, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. Cole was born Nov. 13, 1927, in Ocie, Mo. He was a truck driver for Allied Signal for 40 years, retiring in 1989, and was a member of IMAW Local 314. He was baptized into the Tarsney Lake Community Church in 1963.
His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Edith Cole of the home; two sons, Les Cole, Blue Springs, and Roger Cole, Oak Grove; three sisters, Edith Rogers, Ocie, Mae Wiswell, Schaumburg, Ill., and Audrey Watkins, Sparta, Mo.; five grandchildren, Brenda Cole, Kyle Van Holcke, Nathan Frazee, Matthew Cole and Kaylee Cole, all of Oak Grove; and three great-grandchildren, Edie Cole of the home, and Charley Cole and Robert Cole, both of Oak Grove; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
DORIS N. SHUPE
Doris N. Shupe, 88, Independence, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Shupe was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Charleroi, Pa., and had lived in Denver most of her life, moving to Independence 17 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burrell R. Shupe in 1989.
Her survivors include two sons, David B. Shupe, Loveland, Colo., and Bruce I. Shupe, Denver; one daughter, Elaine Elefson, Independence; four brothers, Ralph Coven, Albert Coven, Elmer Coven and Richard Coven, and one sister, Genevieve Dow, all of Denver; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Salvation Army or Outreach International.
ALVIN "PONCHO" VON HOLTEN
Alvin "Poncho" Von Holten, 59, Independence, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Von Holten was born in Sweet Springs, Mo., and moved permanently to Independence in 1962. He worked in the maintenance department for the Ford Motor Co., retiring in 1992, and was vice president of United Auto Workers Ford Retirees Union Local 249. He was a 1957 graduate of Higginsville (Mo.) High School and a Marine Corps veteran.
His survivors include his wife of 84 years, Donna Von Holten, and a son, Kevin Paul Butler, both of the home; three daughters, Merrie Elizabeth Pearson, Mount Vernon, Mo., and Vicki Lee Von
Holten and Melissa Faith Butler, both of Independence; his mother, Ethel K. Von Holten, and one brother, Milton Kurtz, both of Sandpoint, Idaho; two sisters, Carol Wade, Mayview, Mo., and Patricia Jensen, Orrick, Mo.; and six grandchildren.

ALICE L. WORKMAN
Alice Louise Workman, 88, Kansas City, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Workman was born June 30, 1909, in Kansas City and had lived in this area most of her life. She worked for AT&T for 37 years, retiring in 1969, and was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was a member of the Lowry City (Mo.) United Methodist Church and a past member of Mount Washington United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4242 Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Workman in 1987, and a daughter, Shirley Workman in 1933.
Her survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil and Gloria Workman Jr., Kansas City, and Wayne and Inez Workman, Greenbrier, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, where 5th District Auxiliary mortuary services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
