W. BLAIR McCLAIN
W. Blair McClain, 88, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999.
Mr. McClain was born Aug. 22, 1911, in Paris, Tenn., and moved to Independence in 1922. He graduated from William Chrisman High School. He worked at Butler Manufacturing beginning in 1934 and became the manager of the cost and estimating accounting department. He was a minister in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church. In 1946, he accepted full time ministerial assignment with the RLDS Church and served as Stake President of the Detroit International Stake, Center Stake, of Independence; Tulsa Stake of Tulsa, Okla.; and Santa Fe Stake of Independence during his 29 years of church ministry. He oversaw the construction of 50 houses of worship, campgrounds and facilities, and other structures and rejoiced in the baptism of more than 4, 000 persons during his administration. Following his retirement, he was ordained to the office of Evangelist in which he served until his death.. He also served as past president of Independence Kiwanis and had 34 years of perfect attendance. He was elected and attended two Kiwanis International conventions. He received the George F. Hison Fellow Award from Kiwanis International. While president, he was made honorary captain of the Independence Police Department. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Kenneth.
His survivors include his wife of 68 years, Gwendolyn, his sons, Dahryl, Detroit, Mich., and A.D., St. Louis, ; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
Services will be 7 p.m. Friday at the Stone Church. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel and from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the RLdS Temple Endowment Fund or to Graceland College Endowment Fund.
ROBERT L. NELSON
Robert Louis Nelson, 77, Buckner, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at Truman Medical Center.
Mr. Nelson was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Nokomis, Ill., and had lived most of his life in the Kansas City area before moving to Buckner in 1985. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the VFW and American Legion in Blue Springs.
His survivors include his wife of 49 years, Eleanora L. Nelson of the home; four sons, James R. Nelson, Kansas City, William L. Nelson, Richmond, Mo., Gary A. Nelson, Lee's Summit, and Richard C. Nelson, Kansas City; three daughters, Marian L. Generaux, Buckner, Cherryln K. Generaux, Independence, and Judith A. Biswell, Kansas City; 23 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the family.
ROBERT N. DADO
Robert N. Dado, 57, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Dado was born Dec. 10, 1940, in Bakersfield, Calif. He was a supervisor. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Sandra Dado of the home; four daughters, Shelley Dado, Stacy Dado and Robin Skaggs, all of Bakersfield, and Kristin Kavanaugh, Naperville, Ill.; a sister, Susan Masson, Bakersfield, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Corey and Kayla Skaggs, and Michael Kavan.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral home. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time.
MARY C. DAWDY
Mary C. Dawdy, 83, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Dawdy was born Feb. 19, 1915, in West Pittston, Pa., and lived in Muskogee, Okla., before moving to Independence in 1967. She was past president of the General Federation Women's Clubs of Missouri, 2nd District, and was a past member of the board of directors of the General Federation Women's Club of Missouri. She was also active in several other community organizations and a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church.
Her survivors include her husband, Sam Dawdy of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Sam B. and Shila Dawdy, and one granddaughter, Caitlin, all of Overland Park, Kan.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, where the rosary will be at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Development Fund, 6400 Minnesota, St. Louis, Mo. 63111.
MARY M. WHITESIDE
Mary M. Whiteside, 86, Blue Springs, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Whiteside was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Wakenda, Mo., and had lived in Blue Springs for 20 years. She had been the manager of Osco Drug Co., and she and her husband owned the Blue Ridge Cafe for 20 years. She was of the Methodist faith. Her husband, George P. Whiteside Sr., died in 1984.
Her survivors include two daughters, Margaret Ann Bicknell, Blue Springs, and Mary R. Owen, Bates City; one son, George P. Whiteside, Lee's Summit; four sisters, Geraldine Hogue, Pleasant Hill, Mo., Alice Barker, Raytown, Anna Lou Lewis, Independence, and Joe Helen Barnett, Torrence, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
CLARENCE L. "C.L." FITCH
Clarence L. "C.L." Fitch, 72, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Fitch was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Sugar Creek. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He worked at Ford Motor Claycomo Plant for 27 years before retiring.
His survivors include his wife, Maryetta Fitch; three daughters, Nancy Hale, Independence, Susan Jackley, Grain Valley, Cheryl Sutlick, Walla Walla, Wash.; a son, Lawrence Fitch, Blue Springs; a stepmother, Esta Fitch, Sugar Creek; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Swan Lake cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel.
RUTH A. RUFF
Ruth Arlene Ruff, 73, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City.
Mrs. Ruff was born May 20, 1925, in Harrison, Ark., and had lived in this area for 45 years. She had been an insurance clerk for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and the National Methodist Campers Club.
Her survivors include her husband, Gerald "Jerry" Ruff of the home; three daughters, Denise Anderson, Lenexa, Kan., Jeri Nell Stephens, Lee's Summit, and Debbie Maston, Kansas City; two brothers, Gordon Lawson, Heath, Ohio, and Glenn Lawson, Wichita, Kan.; four sisters, Nola Baker, Paso Robles, Calif., Laura Terry, Harrison, Ark., Virginia Long, Liberty, Mo., and Wilma Mathison, Independence; and four grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. JOHN D. CHANDLER
John David Chandler, 55, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Chandler was born April 2, 1942, in Florence, Ala., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a welder and a member of the Local 10 Ironworkers Union. He had been a member of the Parkville Masonic Lodge and was of the Baptist faith.
His survivors include his wife, Priscilla L. Chandler of the home; a daughter, Diana Lynn White, Blue Springs; two sons, Ricky David Chandler and John Wayne Chandler, both of Independence; his parents, John and Ruth Chandler, Warsaw, Mo.; two brothers, Harold W. Chandler, Independence, and Don Chandler, Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Linda Sue Close, Independence; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
MARY K. "KATHY" CURRY
Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Curry, 62, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Curry was born in Tuscumbia, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area for the past 30 years. She has been a legal secretary with the Watson, Ess, Marshall, Engass law firm. She was an 11-year member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Preceptor Iota Chapter, where she had received the Order of the Rose, held most offices, attained the highest degree Laureate and had been elected Woman of the Year, twice. She was of the Assembly of God faith.
Her survivors include her husband, Robert L. Curry of the home; five sons, Chief Petty Officer Steven Myers, Virginia Beach, Va., David Myers, Raytown, Michael Curry, R.N., Independence, Dr. Mark Curry, Olathe, Kan., and Marlan Curry, Spring, Texas; two daughters, Debra Hergott, Overland Park, Kan., and Michelle Bennes, Valparaiso, Fla.; her mother and stepfather, Jo and Wesley Pfeifer, Blue Springs; a brother, Terry Pfeifer, Houston; a sister, Patricia Pryor, Tuscumbia; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence, with a second service being held at 3p.m. Saturday at the Tuscumbia Christian Church. Burial will be in Tuscumbia cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel, where Beta Sigma Phi prayer services will be held at 8:30 p.m.
EFFIE M. MAYFIELD
Effie Marie Mayfield, 98, Belton, Mo., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Beautiful Savior Home and Manor in Belton.
Miss Mayfield was born April 20, 1899, in Polk County, Mo., and had lived in Independence for more than 60 years. She was a power machine operator for Rosmin Coat Co., and later worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a Baptist and a member of the Golden Age Club.
Her survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rock Prairie cemetery, Pleasant Hope, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
DOROTHY M. MOORE
Dorothy Margaret Moore, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Moore was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Carrollton, Mo., and had been an area resident for 59 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn H. Moore.
Her survivors include two sons, Ronald Moore and Glen Earl Moore; three daughters, Joyce Jean Sisson, Janet Ruth Berger and Patricia Kay Moore; two brothers, Harold Wright and J.V. Wright; two sisters, Phyllis Post and Ruth Wilson; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.
KEVIN J. OAKES
Kevin John Oakes, 33, Mexico, Mo., formerly of Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Oakes was born March 29, 1964, in Mexico and lived in Mexico most of his life, except for a few years in Blue Springs. He worked at American Auto Parts and was a member of the St. Brendan Catholic Church in Mexico.
His survivors include two sons, Billy Oakes and Joshua Oakes, a daughter, Jessica Oakes, and his parents, Gerald and Florence Oakes, all of Mexico; his grandmother, Rose Troesser, Martinsburg, Mo.; two brothers, Michael Oakes and Timothy Oakes, both of Mexico; and two sisters, Mary Oakes Milligan, Columbia, Mo., and Jennifer Oakes Fairchild, Mexico. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. Brendan cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at the Arnold Funeral Home, Mexico, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to a trust fund for his children.
VIVIAN C. MOODY
Vivan C. Moody, 85, Parkersburg, W.Va., formerly of this area, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg.
Mrs. Moody was born in Waldon, Kan. She was retired from the Soslen Envelope Co. of Kansas City, and was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Moody, and a grandson, Allen Thomas.
Her survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Larry A. and Rose Moody, Belton, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois I. and Richard Thomas and Rita J. and Gerald Board, all of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Geneva Moore, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Carson Funeral Home, Blue Ridge Chapel. Burial will be in Muncie cemetery, Wheaton, Mo. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
WANDA M. McCORMICK
Wanda M. McCormick, 82, Lee's Summit, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at the John Knox Village Care Center in Lee's Summit.
Mrs. McCormick was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Iola, Kan., and had lived in Independence before moving to Lee's Summit. She was a beautician and manager for Harzfeld's Department Store Beauty Salon at the Blue Ridge Mall for 14 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd McCormick, and a son, Jerry.
Her survivors include one daughter, Patricia Truax, Bridgewater, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Holli McCormick.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Yates Center, Kansas cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
JULIE L. BOLAND
Julie Lynne Boland, 34, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Boland was born Dec. 27, 1964, in Independence and had lived in Blue Springs since 1990. She was a homemaker.
Her survivors include her husband, Frederick John Boland, one son, Tyler John Boland, and three daughters, Ashley Dawn Boland, Sarah LeAnn Boland and Brittany Lynne Boland, all of the home; her parents, Francis and Nancy Caldwell, Lexington, Mo.; two sisters, Paula Fry, Macon, Mo., and Amy Arp, Madison, Mo.; her stepgrandfather, Arthur J. Ulrey, Lexington; and her grandmother, Jewell Saunders, Blue Springs.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Dover, Mo. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Walker-Nadler Chapel, Lexington, with a rosary at 7 p.m.
