DOVIE B. RUESTER
Dovie B. Ruester of Independence, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Ruester was a homemaker and a member of the Christian faith.
Her survivors include her husband of more than 51 years, Albert Ruester of the home; two sons, Bill Ruester, Henderson, Nev., and Bob Ruester, Blue Springs; her brothers and sisters, Inis Clayton, Farmington, Ark., Hank Garrett, Prairie Grove, Ark., Nova Brewer, Ogden, Utah, and Jay Garrett, Albuquerque, N.M.; and two grandchildren, Franklin and Leslie.
Services were today at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial was in Mount Washington cemetery.
WALTER L. SANDERS
Walter Lee Sanders, 98, Odessa, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at the Community Care Center in Oak Grove.
Mr. Sanders was born July 23, 1899, in Urich, Mo., and had lived in the Odessa and Bates City area all of his life. He was a truck driver for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Odessa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Iles Sanders in 1991, and a son, Robert Sanders.
His survivors include two sons, Ernest L. Sanders, Blue Springs, and Laurence Sanders, Odessa; a sister, Edna Willard, Odessa; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were today at the Odessa cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa.
GERALD D. SCHOEMIG
Gerald Dale Schoemig, 60, Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Schoemig was born in Chillicothe, Mo., and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a driver for Metro Auto Auction. Previously, he worked for AT&T for 26 years, retiring as a lead operator in data processing in 1989. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Pioneer Club.
His survivors include his wife, Bessie Schoemig of the home; three daughters, Marlise Schoemig, Anne Schoemig and Joy Devor, all of Independence; a brother, Kenneth Schoemig; a sister, Janice Kay McGaugh; and one grandson, Austin Devor.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
TROY M. SWISEGOOD
Troy Max Swisegood, 31, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 1997, at Columbia Overland Park Health Center.
Mr. Swisegood was born in Kansas City, and lived in Independence before moving to Oak Grove in 1970. He attended Oak Grove R-VI schools graduating in 1984. He had been employed at B&M Auto Supply in Blue Springs, Power Automotive in Oak Grove, and was currently working at Mid-State Excavating in Blue Springs. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Napoleon and was a Little League Baseball coach for the past four seasons. He started tractor pulling 23 years ago and was a member of the MSTPA and Outlaw Tractor Pulling Associations.
His survivors include his wife, Sherry Swisegood of the home; a son, Jacob Troy Swisegood, and his parents, Max and Jane Swisegood, all of Oak Grove; a sister, Shelly Drecktrah; his grandmother, Ethel Swisegood, Browning, Mo.; two aunts, one uncle, and two nephews.
Services were today at the church. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The family suggests contributions to a scholarship for his son in care of the Bank of Jacomo, Oak Grove. Arrangements were under the direction of the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.
CARL L. THOMAS
Carl L. Thomas, 74, Baylis, Ill., formerly of this area, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at Illini Community Hospital, Pittsfield, Ill.
Mr. Thomas was born Aug. 11, 1923, near Pearl, Ill. He was a long haul truck driver for Mid-State Trucking, later known as Spector Mid State, from 1952 until he retired in 1982. He was transferred to Kansas City in 1960. He returned to Bayless in 1995. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Independence, Teamsters Local 41 and served in the Army during World War II in a tank destroyer battalion. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Sue Liddle in 1978.
His survivors include his wife, Donna Musgrave Thomas of Baylis; two sons, Carl Brent Thomas and Charles William "Chuck" Thomas, both of Pittsfield; five daughters, Carla Marie Metcalf, Las Vegas, Nev., and Victoria L. Wiebe, Elaine D. Arnone, Shelly D.L. Cobb and Carol L. Siddle, all of Independence; three brothers, Chad Thomas and Albert Thomas, both of Jacksonville, Ill., William Thomas, Griggsville; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10a.m. Wednesday at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield. Burial will be in West cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Pittsfield American Legion Post 152. Friends may call from 4 to 6 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer`s Research Foundation or to the Pike Co. Hospice.
KENNETH W. TOUSLEY
Kenneth Willis Tousley, 79, Lamoni, Iowa, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Tousley was born May 14, 1918, in Osceola, Iowa, and was raised in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. He returned to Lamoni in 1974. He and his first wife opened their home to many young adults from Central America and visited Honduras to teach the people about Jesus Christ. His first wife, Alta June Moorman Tousley, died 1971.
His survivors include his wife, Cirila Tousley of the home; daughters, Karen Hutchinson, Loveland, Colo., Lois Brown, Teodolinda Hernandez and Maria Moreira-DeBarthe, all of Independence, Joanna Tousley-Escalante, Vienna, Austria, Linda Finch, Osceola, Iowa, Marta Beal, Arlington, Texas, Maria Cummings, Lamoni, Iowa, Ada Ramos and Carmen Ramos, both of Kansas City, and Kenya Straight, Holstein, Iowa; sons, Orlando Ramos, Salem, Ill., Hector Hernandez, Lamoni, Orban Ramos, Manuel Castillo and Miguel Moreira, all of Independence, Enrique Castillo, Honduras, C.A.; three sisters, Edith Phillips and Mabel Savage, both of Independence, and Marjorie Tousley, California; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Rebecca, Laura, Wendy, Thomas, Noel, Jeannette, Carlos, Sonya, Jeromy, Jared, Jesse, Justin, Tasha, Ashley, Alora, Ellen, Aaron, Laura, Daniel, Brenda, Ricardo, Gina and Amy; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Aug. 27 at the Decatur City Restoration Branch. Burial was in Lillie cemetery, Lamoni.
ROY A. GIFFEN
Roy A. Giffen, 41, Bates City, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, March 4, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Giffen was born in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a carpenter for Kissick Construction Co. of Kansas City and was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1329. He was also a member of Maywood Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife, Jannethe Giffen, one son, Chad Giffen, and one daughter, Amanda Giffen, all of the home; and his parents, Daniel and Myrel Giffen, Bates City.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Private burial will be in Liberty cemetery, Hermitage, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
MABEL M. JACKSON
Mabel M. Jackson, 81, Elkland, Mo., died Friday, May 2, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Jackson was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Lebanon, Mo. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of the Springfield District.
Her survivors include her husband, Silas Jackson of the home; two sons, Glen Jackson, Elkland, and Wayne Jackson, Louisburg, Mo.; two daughters, Nadine Smothers, Independence, and Evelyn Willhoite, Junction City, Kan.; three sisters, Grace Stark, Maxine Corder and Gladys Tippet, all of Independence; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at Cantlon Funeral Home, Buffalo, Mo. Burial was in Memorial Memory Gardens cemetery, Buffalo.
EFFEE R. REICHENEKER
Effee Rose Reicheneker, 75, Blue Springs, died Monday, May 5, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Reicheneker was born Aug. 14, 1921. She was a structural engineer for Armco Steel for 25 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of St. John LaLande Catholic Church in Blue Springs and a volunteer worker at Vesper Hall for Seniors.
Her survivors include one daughter, Karen Neher, Independence; two sisters, Janice Stumbough, Edwardsville, Kan., and Sharon Eissler, Holden, Mo.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the church.
NORAH D. SCHMALE
Norah Delores "Sissy" Schmale, 48, Cleveland, Mo., died Friday May 2, 1997, at St. Joseph Health Center, Kansas City.
Mrs. Schmale was born Feb. 16, 1949, in Kansas City, Kan. She had worked for Allied Signal, Kansas City, as a production supervisor and later in manufacturing services. She was a Catholic.
Her survivors include her husband, George Lee Schmale of the home; a daughter, Michelle, Cleveland; a brother, Herb Simon, Grain Valley; and three grandchildren, James Bryan Straton, Jami Lea Straton and Jessi Sue Straton.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Orient cemetery, Harrisonville, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville.
H. CLAY BRONSON
H. Clay Bronson, 80, Independence, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Bronson was born April 12, 1917, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He worked for the U.S. government for 30 years. He was a member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch and held the priesthood office of teacher. He was also an Army veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Bronson of the home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
CLIFFORD C. CRENSHAW
Clifford C. Crenshaw, 80, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at St. Mary`s Manor Nursing Center, Blue Springs.
Mr. Crenshaw was born July 8, 1916, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was an engineer for Jackson County Public Works for 30 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Bible Church; a 50 year member and past president of the American Legion Post No. 21; and a member of the 40/8 honor society of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge No. 76. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Liddle Crenshaw in 1993.
His survivors include his son, Clifford R. Crenshaw, Federal Way, Wash.; a sister, Frances Stephenson, Kansas City; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, where American Legion Post 21 will provide military graveside services. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the organ fund or the missionary fund at the church.
BESSIE L. GATES
Bessie L. Gates, 84, Warsaw, Mo., formerly of Independence, died on Saturday, May 3, 1997, at Warsaw Health Care Center.
Mrs. Gates was born April 8, 1913, in Webb City, Mo., and had lived in Independence for more than 70 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett M. Gates in 1971.
Her survivors include two sons, Gerald E. Gates, Warsaw, and Everett E. Gates, Independence; a daughter, Mary Ann Noland, Edwards, Mo.; a sister, Martha Bush, Independence; 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great- grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
BECKEY J. KINDER
Beckey June Gramentine Kinder, 37, Norfork, Va., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, April 26, 1997.
Mrs. Kinder was born Oct. 6, 1959, in Hollywood, Calif. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and had worked for the Spofford Home. She was a 1977 graduate of William Chrisman High School and a 1981 graduate of William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo.
Her survivors include her husband, Gary R. Kinder of the home; her mother, Veda Gramentine, Norfolk; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Wright, St.Joseph, Mo.; and a cousin.
Services were May 1 at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City.
NORBERT L. LIEBERKNECHT
Norbert L. Lieberknecht, 60, Independence, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, at his home.
His survivors include his wife, Diane Lieberknecht; four sons, Norbert Lieberknecht Jr., William Lieberknecht, Kenneth Lieberknecht and Bryan Lieberknecht; a daughter, Carol Tillman; a brother, William Lieberknecht; three sisters, Laura Scherr, Julia LaVoie and Teresa Brown; and three grandchildren.
Services were today at St. Mark`s Catholic Church, Lee`s Summit. Arrangements were under the direction of Charter Funerals/Earp and Sons Chapel, Kansas City.
MARK S. LUCE
Mark S. Luce, 35, Independence, died Thursday, May 1, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Luce was born March 9, 1962, in Mentor, Ohio. He was a Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Veteransof Foreign Wars and Raytown Baptist Church.
His survivors include his father, Carl Luce, and his stepmother, Gertrude Luce, both of Independence; two brothers, Tom Luce, Independence, and John Luce, North Carolina; and a sister, Grace Luce, Painesville, Ohio.
