LUVENA M. "BUNNY" EASTON
Luvena Mable "Bunny" Easton, 74, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Easton was born May 26, 1923, in Independence. She had worked at the HyVee grocery store on 23rd Street, and was a member of the Baptist faith.
Her survivors include a daughter, Beverly Ann Mohart, Independence; two brothers, Fred DeHoff, LaCygne, Kan., and Robert DeHoff, Grain Valley; a sister, Leta Huntsucker Cornelius, Independence; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.
WILLIAM E. FAIN
William Earl Fain, 84, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Fain was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Gran Valley and was a lifelong area resident. He retired as a self-employed painting contractor and owner of Earl Fain`s Bar in Independence. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda E. Bedsaul in 1984.
His survivors include his wife, Nadyne E. Fain of the home; a son, James D. Fain, Independence; two daughters, Susan P. Bowman, Lee`s Summit, and Kathi N. Williams, Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Rowena Larwill, Modesto, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the chapel.
HURLEY W. MAHAN
Hurley Wayne Mahan, 64, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Mahan was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Lee`s Summit. He was a softball pitcher and also enjoyed horseshoes, bowling and darts. He was involved with Scouting and was a warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say for many years. He served in the National Guard for 12 years.
His survivors include his children, Steven W. Mahan, Gladstone, Mo., Kathleen M. Mahan, Sioux Falls, S.D., Sheila A. Carr, Kansas City North, Hurley D. Mahan, Clinton, Mo., and Mark W. Mahan, Kansas City North; and brothers and sisters, J.H. Mahan, Belton, Stanley L. Mahan, Lee`s Summit, Wanetta Foley, Modesto, Calif., Naomi B. Cox, Independence, Frank S. Mahan, Greenwood, and Larry Mahan, Lee`s Summit.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery, Lee`s Summit. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday or from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
ETHEL M. NELSON
Ethel May Nelson, 97, Belton, formerly of Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Nelson was born May 1, 1900, in Ottawa, Kan. She was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldren Nelson in 1957, and her daughter, Lorna Blair in 1993.
Her survivors include two grandchildren, Tom Blair, Blue Springs, and Anthony J. Blair, Salina, Kan.; two granddaughters, Vicki Stevens, Warsaw, Mo., and Dani Feagles, Belton; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
VANDA K. FRANTZ
Vanda Kaye Frantz, 51, Grain Valley, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
Mrs. Frantz was born June 22, 1947, in St. Louis, and had lived in Blue Springs until moving to Grain Valley in 1984. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1965 and attended William Jewell College where she was a member of Alpha Delta Phi Sorority. She was a founding member of the Liberty Civic Theatre, a member of the Grain Valley Theatre Group, the Blue Springs Civic Theatre and the Grain Valley Historical Society. She was a spokeswoman for the Cancer Patient Caregivers at St. Luke's Hospital. She was employed at LaPetite Academy as a division director until retiring in 1998. The Liberty LaPetite Academy, Liberty, was dedicated in her honor for 20 years of service.
Her survivors include her husband, Dick Frantz of the home; two daughters, Valerie Gallup and Vickie Goade, both of Grain Valley; a stepson, Rick Frantz, Edwardsville, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Debbie Thompson, North Kansas City; her father, Edward C. Schultze, Grain Valley; a brother, Victor Schultze, Liberty; three grandchildren, Trace, Emily and Matthew; and three stepgrandchildren, Kelley, Kinzie and Kylie.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. Burial will be in the Grain Valley cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the Royer Chapel. MILDRED M. HENDERSON
Mildred Marie Henderson, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Henderson was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Kansas City, and had lived in the Independence area for most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was a Jehovah`s Witness. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Henderson in 1994.
Her survivors include three brothers, Frank Davidson Jr., and Gerald Hughes, both of Independence, and Edward Davidson, Lake Lotawana.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah`s Winess, 2885 Hardy, Independence. Private burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
EUNICE A. STEVENS
Eunice A. Stevens, 86, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Stevens was born Oct. 8, 1911, in Heber Springs, Ark. She was a homemaker and a member of the Little Blue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Marjorie Mahan and Betty Hibdon.
Her survivors include a son, Clarence Daniel Simmons, Lawson, Mo.; several brothers and sisters; 12 grandchildren, Debbie Bennett, Pat Newman, Stan Mahan, Sue Rhode, Cheryl Cowley, Vicki Mehrer, Shawnalee Arnold, David Hennessy, Daniel Simmons, and from Independence, Mike Mahan, Curtis Mead, Shelly Patrick; 24 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills East cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
JOHN J. BROWNE SR.
John J. Browne Sr., 74, Belton, Mo., died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Browne was born Nov. 8, 1923, in Kansas City. He worked for Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co. for 32 years, and was a member of the Catholic faith. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal.
His survivors include his wife of 49 years, Lois "June" Browne; two daughters, Beverly Brucker and Sherri Aronson, and one son, John J. Browne Jr., all of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; two sisters, Elizabeth George and Mary Louise Marsh; two brothers, George Browne and Frank Browne; and four grandchildren; Shari Henry, Michael Henry, Curtis Browne and Sarah Browne.
Services were today at the Carson Blue Ridge Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. The family suggests contributions to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
DR. KLETA H. FINLEY
Dr. Kleta HaZelle Finley, Ph.D., 88, San Francisco, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.
Dr. Finley was born May 22, 1909, in Ottumwa, Iowa. She attended Iowa State University, Graceland College and Columbia University, and received her Doctorate in Education from Penn State University. She taught at numerous universities and colleges, retiring from Longview Community College. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Lambda Delta Sigma, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the RLDS Stone Church.
She is survived by one sister, Jacqueline Johnson of the home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the church.
CHARLES C. KUEFNER
Charles C. Kuefner, 83, Independence, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Kuefner was born May 30, 1914, in Norborne, Mo., moved to this area in the 1940s, and to Flemington, Mo., on Pomme de Terre Lake in the early 1960s. He returned to Independence in 1997. He drove a coal truck in the 1940s, before painting apartments and
homes. In the late 1940s, he worked at the Firestone Store in Independence and in the Fairmount area for many years. In the 1950s, he owned/operated Charlie`s Garage in Fairmount until the early 1960s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Kuefner in 1965, and two grandsons.
His survivors include one daughter, Nancy L. Johnson, Independence; four grandchildren, Dennis C. Wilson, Lorena L. Rogers, Vickie J. Smith and Donna L. Clark; 10 great-grandchildren; and one niece.
Cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
PHILLIP D. MARQUEZ
Phillip D. Marquez, 61, Independence, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Marquez was a Marine Corps and Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring from the Air Force as a technical sergeant. He was a security patrol officer for the cities of Kansas City and Independence, and was a member of the Belton (Mo.) Methodist Church.
His survivors include his wife, Susan Marquez of the home; his mother, Jane Marquez, White Bear Lake, Minn.; three sons, Robert Marquez, Edinburg, Texas, Randell Marquez, Omaha, Neb., and Jeff Marquez, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; one daughter, Stacy Weaver, Edinburg, Texas; two stepsons, Ralph Turley and Eddy Turley, and one stepdaughter, Sabrina Turley, all of Independence; one brother, Timm Marquez, White Bear Lake; two sisters, April Braucks, Cottage Grove, Minn., and Barb Jackson, Minneapolis; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Snapp`s Ozarks Memorial Park Funeral Home, Branson. Burial will be in Ozarks Memorial Park cemetery, Branson. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
NELLIE E. RYAN
Nellie E. Ryan, 65, Independence, died Friday, April 17, 1998.
Mrs. Ryan had lived in Texas before moving to Independence.
Her survivors include two sons, Kevin Decker, South Kansas City, and Nathan Decker, Eugene, Ore.; three daughters, Nancy Hagerman, Jerico Springs, Mo., Sharon Blackmon, Independence, and LaNell Rogers, Austin, Texas; five brothers, William Behee, Houston, James Behee and Walter Behee, both of Pleasant Hill, Mo., Richard Behee, Independence, and Melvin Behee, Dickinson, Texas; two sisters, Mary Lou Woods, Sugar Creek, and Linda Durben, Centre, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were today at the Kansas City Central Seventh Day Adventist Church. Burial was in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City.
CHAD L. SCHLAG
Chad Lee Schlag, 30, Independence, died Thursday, April 16, 1998.
Mr. Schlag was born May 27, 1967, in Kansas City. He was a pourer for Aristocrat Marble Co., and was a member of the Baptist faith.
His survivors include his parents, Lester L. Schlag, Kansas City, and Karen Schlag, Independence; one daughter, Nicole R. Schlag, Kansas City, Kan.; one brother, Scott Schlag, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; one sister, Anita Hernandez, Independence; his grandmother, Alberta Phillips, Osceola, Mo.; four nieces, four nephews; and several aunts and uncles.
Services were today at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial was in Oakland cemetery.
JOHNNY M. STOVER
Johnny Mack Stover, 48, Independence, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Stover was born Dec. 16, 1949, in Parsons, Kan., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He worked for Hunt Wesson Foods, and was a member of the Teamsters. He was a member of Mount Calvary United Methodist Church, was president of the United Methodist Men, and was a past Boy Scout leader. He was an Army veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Cheryl Stover of the home; one son, David Stover, Independence; three daughters, Kerri Stover, Grant City, Mo., and Kristi Brown and Katie Stover, both of the home; his father, John C. Stover, Independence; two brothers, Rick Stover, Texas, and Bill Stover, Independence; three sisters, Becky Smith and Kathy Stickley, both of Independence, and Bonny Riley, Raytown; and two grandsons, Calvin Stover and Mitchell Stover.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
JANE A. WARREN
Jane Ann Warren, 52, Independence, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Warren was born Aug. 9, 1945, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a receptionist for Capital Electric for more than 12 years.
Her survivors include her life partner, Dick Schroer of the home; one son, Jeff Warren, Kansas City; and a daughter, Jill Speake, San Francisco.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
