THELMA McCAIN

Thelma McCain, 97, Independence, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. McCain was born Nov. 7, 1900, on a farm west of Bates City. She attended the one-room Webb School, then Odessa High School, graduating from Oak Grove High School. After graduation from the Kansas City Business College, she worked in the advertising department for the Kansas City Journal Post. She later worked in the business office for Sears, Roebuck & Co. After her retirement, she helped her husband operate a farm in Blue Springs for several years. Later they moved back to Independence. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence and was a member and officer of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by her second husband, James Henry McCain, and a great-grandson, John Ryan Ferguson.

Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, June Arlene and John Thomas Ferguson, Independence; a grandson, John Stephen Ferguson, and two great-grandchildren, Dawn Ann and John Scott Ferguson, all of Lee`s Summit; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the church.

CLARE J. PROVOST

Clare Joseph Provost, 73, Independence, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.

Mr. Provost was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Flint, Mich., and had lived in Independence for more than 50 years. He was a chemist for Armco Steel for 36 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His survivors include his wife, Vivian Provost of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Dawn and Doug Ross, Buckner; two brothers, Doane Provost, Allegan, Mich., and R. Frederick Provost, Midland, Mich.; and two granddaughters, Crystal and Lynsey Ross.

Private graveside services will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

JOHN C. TAYLOR

John Cooke Taylor, 65, Waukee, Iowa, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Taylor was born March 31, 1933, in Kansas City, and lived in Blue Springs before moving to Waukee. He was a past employee of the Vendo Co. and Fawn Engineering, retiring from the federal government in 1996. He was a 1957 graduate of Park College, an Army veteran, and a member of the Waukee United Methodist Church.

His survivors are his wife, Marilyn Taylor of the home; one son, Bradley Taylor, St. Louis; two daughters, Laurie Kofmehl, Storm Lake, Iowa, and Christine Taylor, Oskaloosa, Iowa; one sister, Johanna Kroencke, Lee`s Summit; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buckner Hill cemetery. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown Funeral Home in Buckner.

VIOLET L. GRAY

Violet Leonore Gray, 96, Park Rapids, Minn., formerly of Independence, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at her home on Potato Lake, north of Park Rapids.

Mrs. Gray was born Jan. 8, 1902, in Momence, Ill., and lived in Kansas City and Independence before moving to Park Rapids in 1963. She attended school in Momence, graduating from high school in 1919, and attended the University of Illinois, Champaign, for one year. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for the Kansas City White Goods Manufacturing Co. from 1920 until she retired. She was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church, Itasca Chapter 70 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ingleside Study Club, St. Joseph`s Hospital Auxiliary and the NSAL, all in Park Rapids. She had also been a member of the United Methodist Women and the American Legion Auxiliary in Independence, serving as president of both organizations. She sang in the church choir for many years. Her husband of 62 years, Warren Gray, died in 1994.

Her survivors include three nieces and their families, Carolyn Clark and Patricia Larabee, both of Independence, and Susanne Cardello, Blue Springs; a half sister, Betty Noonan, Valparaiso, Ind.; and her caregivers, the Lassila family.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Lake Emma cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home, Park Rapids.

BERYL E. LEUTY

Beryl Eldon Leuty, 75, Independence, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Leuty was born Aug. 5, 1922, near Hume, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1971. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 21 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1738. He was vice president of the Lu Dall Manufacturing Co., where he worked from 1959 until his retirement in 1984. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie 47 and St. Mark`s Catholic Church.

His survivors include his wife, Anna Belle Leuty of the home; three sons, Gary Leuty, St. Louis, George Leuty, Independence, and Clayton Leuty, Blue Springs; one daughter, Cindy Leuty, Los Angeles; one brother, John Leuty, Gladstone, Mo.; five grandchildren, Lisa Vinck, Sara Leuty, Cora Leuty, Anna Leuty and Zachary Leuty; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jacob Vinck.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Entombment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery Mausoleum, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m.

LOIS A. LUKE

Lois A. Luke, 98, Independence, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at the Park Place Care Center.

Mrs. Luke was born Aug. 25, 1899, in Listowel, Ontario, Canada, and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a member of the Miracle United Pentecostal Church, Lee`s Summit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Luke in 1983, and a daughter, Joyce Meger in 1994.

Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jared and Rita Luke, Kansas City; two daughters and one son-in-law, Dorothy and Charlie Sanders, Kansas City, and Andrea Laundry, British Columbia, Canada; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

STERLING P. MOAD

Sterling Patrick Moad, 43, Independence, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at the Kansas University Medical Center.

His survivors include his wife, Carron Hairabedian-Moad; his mother, Vivian Albright Moad; and many other relatives.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Arnold Funeral Home, Mexico, Mo. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be left at the funeral home.

MONTIE D. "PAPAW" SCHROER

Montie C. "Papaw" Schroer, 57, Independence, died Saturday, July 4, 1998.

Mr. Schroer was born July 4, 1941, in Jefferson City. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Seabees. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Schroer, and a daughter, Terri Schroer.

His survivors include his wife of 37 years, Arlene Schroer of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law, Nancy Schroer, Independence, and Dana and Alan Smith, Sugar Creek; his mother, Ruby Schroer, Independence; two brothers, Richard Schroer, Independence, and Roger Schroer, Topeka; one sister, Barbara Peters, Wyoming; one granddaughter, Lauren Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

JAMES A. CHRISMAN

James Arlie Chrisman, 95, Council Bluffs, Iowa, formerly of Independence, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Indian Hills Nursing Home, Council Bluffs.

Mrs. Chrisman was born June 12, 1903, in Harrisburg, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ada Fern Grogger in 1994.

Her survivors include a granddaughter, Donna Gittins, Council Bluffs; three great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were today at Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.

THOMAS H. WILLEY

Thomas Harold Willey, 50, Blue Springs, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Miami County Medical Center, Paola, Kan.

Mr. Willey was born Nov. 3, 1947, in New Rockford, N.D., and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a superintendent for Pearce Construction Co. He was a 1965 graduate of William Chrisman High School, and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War era. He was an avid fisherman, was active in Blue Springs Little League, and a member of the East Independence RLDS congregation.

His survivors include his wife, Susan Willey of the home; four children, Chad Willey, Adam Willey and Eric Willey, all of Blue Springs, and Kimberly Taylor, Kansas City, Kan.; his parents, Kenneth and Ava Willey, and a sister, Carolyn Barnhard, all of Independence; and two brothers, Richard Willey, Independence, and Steven Willey, Blue Springs.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family will have a private graveside service following the funeral. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, P.O. Box 366, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102, the Humane Society or Powell Gardens.

ARCH W. CARROLL

Arch Walker Carroll, 71, Savannah, Tenn., died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Savannah.

Mr. Carroll was a retired vice president for Forest Textiles, Inc., in Kings Mountain, N.C.

His survivors include two daughters, Helen Joyce Carroll, Palo Alto, Calif., and Jane Carroll, Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Arch "Chip" Carroll Jr., Marion, Ind., and William "Bill" Carroll, Blue Springs; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

Services will be Nov. 21, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, Savannah. Burial will be in Savannah (Tenn.) cemetery. Arrangements are under the directions of the Shackelford Funeral Home, Savannah.

LYNN M. WAHLERS

Lynn M. Wahlers, 44, Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Mr. Wahlers was born Nov. 8, 1955, in Kansas City, and had lived in the Independence area most of his life. He was a member of Rockwood Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Beverly Wahlers of the home; a stepson, Matthew Arenson, Overland Park, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Arenson and Jamie Swischer, both of Overland Park, Kan.; and a son, Daniel Swamp, Independence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel.

DOROTHY PAXTON

Dorothy "Nana" Hunter Paxton, 81, Blue Eye, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at Skaggs Community Hospital, Branson, Mo.

Mrs. Paxton was born April 23, 1917, in Kansas City, and had lived in Independence for many years before moving to Blue Eye in 1984. Through the years she was active in the Junior Service League. She was a housemother at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan. She was a Brownie leader for many years and was involved with the Girl Scouts of America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clardy Paxton in 1968.

Her survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Narnie and Mel Deason, Independence, and Dorothy and David Ruble, Branson; grandchildren, Cyndi Fromholtz, Shawnee, Kan., Kent Hessefort and Kristy Hessefort both of Blue Springs, and Kate Ruble, Branson; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Washington cemetery in Independence. Friends may call from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Truman-Heartland Community Foundation, c/o Susan P. Block, 300 N. Osage, Independence, Mo. 64050.

MARY E. SOFFRAY

Mary Ethelda Soffray, 83, Sugar Creek, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Soffray was born June 20, 1915, in Jameson, Mo., and had lived most of her life in the Independence and Sugar Creek areas. She worked for Lake City Arsenal and for Montgomery Wards. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Carlisle Baptist Church.

Her survivors include her husband of 54 years, William C. Soffray of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Cathy Soffray, Sugar Creek; two grandchildren, Nancy Ann Betts and Billy Soffray, both of Sugar Creek.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hickory Creek cemetery, Jameson, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel in Independence.

DOROTHY M. FETTIC

Dorothy M. Fettic, 82, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Fettic was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Marshall, Mo. She worked for J.C. Penney at the Blue Ridge Mall for several years, was a member of Rockwood Baptist Church and a longtime volunteer at the health center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joseph D. Fettic, and a grandson, Scott A. Kelsey.

Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy Jo and Larry Cornine, Independence, and Karen K. and Dale Kelsey, Lone Jack; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.

MILDRED L. CLARK

Mildred L. Whitehead Clark, 88, Raytown, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at the Park Place Care Center, Raytown.

Mrs. Clark was born Feb. 28, 1910, in Nashua, Mo., and had lived in the Independence/Blue Springs area until moving to Raytown 24 years ago. She worked in the parcel post department of the downtown Jones Store Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of Mount Washington Baptist Church and various senior citizens clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Clark on Dec. 24, 1965.

Her survivors include a son, Jim Clark, Raytown; two grandsons, Jimmy Clark and Mike Clark; and a granddaughter, Mary Shaw; and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
