JOYCE HOWELL
Joyce Gregory Howell, 80, Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997.
Mrs. Howell was born in East St. Louis, Ill., and lived in Independence until moving to Scottsdale in 1958. She was a retired production manager for Cattell Press and was an active Oasis volunteer and tutor.
Her survivors include two sons, Kenneth Howell, Bellingham, Wash., and Gregg Howell, Ketchum, Idaho; one sister, Jamesina Flaugher, Belleville, Ill.; two granddaughters, Emily Howell and Claire Howell; and one nephew, Doug Pennington.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85014.
BECKEY J. KINDER
Beckey June Gramentine Kinder, 37, Norfork, Va., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, April 26, 1997.
Mrs. Kinder was born Oct. 6, 1959, in Hollywood, Calif. She was an active volunteer for the Red Cross and had worked for the Spofford Home.
Her survivors include her husband, Gary R. Kinder of the home; her mother, Veda Gramentine, Norfolk; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Wright, St. Joseph, Mo.; and a cousin, Linda Hart, Lake Havasu, Ariz.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight atthe chapel.
NAOMI A. SATTERLEE
Naomi A. Satterlee, 75, Blue Springs, died Monday, April 28, 1997.
Mrs. Satterlee was a babysitter for Broadview Christian Church of Raytown. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Eugene Blaue and Ted Satterlee, and a son, Bruce Blaue.
Her survivors include two sons, Michael Blaue and Karl Blaue; three daughters, Geri Hoerman, Angie Paxton and Lesia Stevens; one stepdaughter, Roxy Thomas; two brothers, Charles Jacksonand Merle Jackson; and one sister, Martha Huffman; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel, Kansas City.
ROSE L. SMITH
Rose Lee Smith, 95, Independence, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, at the Independence Health Care Center.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 5, 1902, in Little Rock, Ark., and lived in West Plains, Mo., most of her life. She moved to Independence 10 years ago. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary in West Plains. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Smith in 1972.
Her survivors include one son, Delbert Foster, Mission, Texas; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
RICHARD C. SPENCER
Richard Carl Spencer, 60, Wintergarden, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Spencer was born in Independence and lived here for many years before moving to Wintergarden. He was a self-employed carpenter, having worked in the Kansas city area and in Florida. He most recently worked for Sierra Manufacturing in Opopka, Fla.
His survivors include two children; and two sisters, Joyce Hartman, Independence, and Sharon Brenan, Knightstown, Ind.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the RLDS Stone Church, in the Education Building Hospitality Room on the lower level, Lexington Avenue and River Boulevard.
WILMA J. CALIVERE
Wilma Jean Calivere, 55, Independence, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Calivere was born June 5, 1943, in Springfield, Mo.
Her survivors include two sons, Mark Dodson and Gary Calivere; three daughters, Robin Winterringer, Theresa Townsend and Frieda Calivere; one brother, David Wilson; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Forest Hill cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, Kansas City.
SAM J. JAMES
Sam J. James, 72, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998.
Mr. James was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. He owned Hills Florist Greens for 37 years, retiring in 1995. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Roselinda in 1953.
His survivors include his wife, Betty James of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Penny James, Independence, and Joseph and Sherri James, Fontana, Calif.; one daughter, Connie James, and two sisters, Elnora Newton and Marie Baggett, all of Independence; three grandchildren, David, Jason and Jennifer James; five step grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
JAMES R. WALKER
James Raymond Walker, 31, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Walker was born March 1, 1967, in Kittery, Maine. He was an Air Force veteran, and had worked for United Heating and Cooling.
His survivors include his parents, James J. and Mary J. Walker, Independence; two brothers, Jerry D. Walker, Creighton, Mo., and Jim Evans, Independence; his maternal grandmother, Frances Cashman, Independence; and aunts and uncles, Don and Jackie Walker, Gary and Carolyn Walker, Terry and Larry Roark, Joann Durrant, Grover McDaniel, and Sherry Walker.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
MATILDA A. "MATIE" YOUNG
Matilda A. "Matie" Young, 99, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.
Ms. Young was born July 30, 1899, in Renfrow, Indian Territory, Okla., and lived in Silverton, Ore., before moving to the Independence area in 1952. She was a secretary and stenographer for Robinson Memorial Neurological Hospital, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Liberty Street RLDS congregation.
Her survivors include two cousins, Mildred Woodward, Portland, Ore., and Alise Lawton, Concord, Calif.; and her guardian and caregivers, Clyde and Evelyn Wilson, Independence.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
T.C. Pool
T.C. Pool, 79, Independence, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Pool was born Oct. 7, 1920, in Kansas City and had lived in this area most of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He had worked for Forum Cafeteria for more than 40 years, retiring as a staff manager. He was a leather craftsman and had attended the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Pool in 1996.
His survivors include his children, Carol Mitchem, Independence, and Ron Pool, Geneva, Ill.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
JESSIE V. HARRIS
Jessie V. Harris, 79, Independence, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Harris was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Springfield, Mo. She was retired from General Foods in Walla Walla, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Harris.
Her survivors include six sisters, Lillian Beckett, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Helen Foster, Polo, Mo., Ethel Corum and Marie Fueston, both of Independence, Velma Morgan, Kansas City, and Erma Jean Rains, Overland Park, Kan.; two stepchildren, Gary Harris, Boise, Idaho, and Dixie Wooley, Emmett, Idaho; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Burial will be in Milton Freewater Oregon. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
MINDRED W. "MIKE" KEAIRNES
Mindred W. "Mike" Keairnes, 92, Independence, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the Rosewood Care Center.
Mr. Keairnes was born March 3, 1907, in Gallands Grove, Iowa, and lived in Omaha, Neb., and Westfield, N.J., before moving to Independence in 1982. He worked for Western Electric for 43 years, retiring in1969 as department chief in the business operations department. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was a member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch.
His survivors include his wife, Helen H. Keairnes of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Janice Keairnes, Lamoni, Iowa, and John and Jary Keairnes, Suwanee, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dan Lewis, Bethesda, Md.; two brothers, Harold Keairnes, Kansas City, and C. Vincent Keairnes, Fort Wayne, Ind.; one sister, Mildred Class, Omaha; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove cemetery mausoleum. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. EDITH M. LEAKEY
Edith Mae Leakey, 85, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at the Independence Health Care Center.
Mrs. Leakey was born July 22, 1913, in Carroll County, Mo. She attended Plum Grove country school in Ray County, Mo. She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where she cared for the nursery Sunday school class for more than 40 years. She was a charter member of the Rolling Green Club, and a member of the Country Liners Club. Her husband, Carl Myers Leakey, died Dec. 9, 1985.
Her survivors include one son, Don Leakey, Kansas City; one daughter, Jeanie White, Independence; two brothers, Eldred E. Evans, Richmond, Mo., and Joseph A. Evans, Kansas City; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were today at the Gibson Funeral Home, Norborne, Mo. Burial was in Fairhaven cemetery, Norborne. The family suggests contributions to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, in memory of Mrs. Leakey, and may be left at or mailed to the Gibson Funeral Home, 201 S. Main St., Carrollton, Mo. 64633.
AUBRA I. LUTGEN
Aubra I. Lutgen, 91, Independence, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Lutgen was born Dec. 13, 1907, near Florence, Mo., and had lived in this area most of his life. He worked for the Sheffield (Armco) Steel Co. before retiring in 1969. His wife, Marie Lutgen, died in 1978.
His survivors include one son, William J. Lutgen, Bates City; four daughters, Charlotte Fisher, Patricia Smith and Nancy Davis, all of Independence, and Martha Gurtner; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Park Lawn Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
IVA A. MARTIN
Iva Alberta Martin, 89, Oak Grove, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at St. Mary's Manor of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Martin was born March 12, 1909, in Mammoth Springs, Ark., and had lived in Oak Grove since 1951. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Squire N. Martin, on Jan. 28, 1995.
Her survivors include a son, Gary Martin, Oak Grove; a daughter, Pat Beck, Grain Valley; a brother, Bert Irvin, Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Chad Martin, Deanna Martin, Renae Freeman and Todd Beck; and five great-grandchildren, Cole Beck, Garrett Beck, Wesley Freeman, Michael White and Teressa White.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Royer Chapel.
MURIEL A. McPHERSON
Muriel A. McPherson, 91, Sugar Creek, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. McPherson was born Feb. 6, 1908, Independence and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a member of the South Crysler Restoration Branch. Her husband, Emmett B. McPherson, died in1982.
Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Muriel Lee "Cookie" and Donald L. "Rusty" Daugherty, Independence, and Diane and Robert O. "Bob" Lamb, Sugar Creek; one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald E. "Jerry" and DeLois McPherson, Shawnee, Kan.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
