WARREN L. POLSTON
Warren L. "George" Polston, 73, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Polston was born Jan. 23, 1924, in Nashville, Mo., and had lived in this area for more than 50 years. He was a 1941 graduate of Minden High School and worked on the family farm and drove the school bus until going into the Navy Seabee`s during World War II. He served on the island of Okinawa. He was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1954, ordained a deacon in 1958, an elder in 1958, a high priest in 1973, and an evangelist/patriarch in 1983. He served as pastor of the Englewood, Slover Park and Walnut Park congregations, and was on the Center Stake High Council for 10 years. He worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1980. He served 17 of those years as a group merchandise manager in the buying office. After his retirement, he was a licensed funeral director for five years at the Speaks Memorial Chapel, retiring from there in 1985.
His survivors include his wife, Beulah Polston of the home; one son, Jerry Polston, Blue Springs; two daughters, Donna Foster, Smithville, Mo., and Linda Rowland, Lee`s Summit; five sisters, Mary Heifner, Diamond, Mo., Virginia Sinnard, Eureka, Calif., Beverly Cole, Cedar Bluff, Va., and Norma Webb and Dorothy Cooper, both of Webb City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Kristin Slauter, Eric Foster, Jason Foster, Ryan Foster and Beth Polston; and one great-grandson, Jordon Slauter.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in the Nashville (Mo.) cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
RUTH E. QUILLEN
Ruth E. Quillen, 70, Woodburn, Ore., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at the Woodburn Care Center.
Mrs. Quillen was born March 9, 1927, in Independence and lived in Independence most of her life before moving to Oregon six years ago. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Her husband, Charles Quillen, died in 1984.
Her survivors include two sons, Les Quillen, Woodburn, and Steve Robins, Aurora, Ore.;three daughters, Connie Zulaski, Aurora, Lisa Garrett, Warsaw, Mo., and Vickie Brisbin, Cherokee, Kan.; four brothers, Charles Leroy Mullins, Tacoma, Wash., James Alfred Mullins, Klamath Falls, Ore., Donald Dean Mullins, Pennsylvania, and Claude E. Mullins, Georgia; four sisters, Mary Ellen Harfield, Last Lake City, Utah, Anna M. Cornett, Independence, Norma Jean Taylor, Klamath Falls, and Wilma Lou Keister, California; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
WILMA N. SIMMONS
Wilma Nell Simmons of Odessa died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Simmons was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Salina County, Ill., and had lived in Odessa since 1990. She was a homemaker and a member of the Odessa Restoration Branch.
Her survivors include her husband, Donald Simmons of the home; two sons, Mark Simmons and Ron Simmons, both of Independence; four daughters, Diane Woolery, Oak Grove, Sherry Hutchison, Grain Valley, Susan Wilson, Harrisburg, Ill., and Annette Dillon, Odessa; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Odessa Restoration Branch. Burial will be in Odessa City cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the Husman-Sparks-McDowell Chapel, Odessa. The family suggests contributions to the Hospice of St.Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
JOYCE A. DOUGAN
Joyce Ann Ahmann Dougan, 47, Independence, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Dougan was born Feb. 6, 1950, and lived in Wellington, Mo., and Odessa before moving to Independence 10 years ago. She was an insurance adjuster for GEHA for 12 years, and a member of St. Luke`s United Church of Christ in Wellington.
Her survivors include her husband, Cliff Dougan, Independence; one son, Nathan Dougan, and one daughter, Teresa Dougan, both of the home; her mother, Ann Ahmann, and one brother, Jim Ahmann, both of Odessa; and one sister, Jane Ferris, Lake Tapawingo.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Snow Funeral Home, Wellington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center Hospice.
CHARLES M. LEWIS
Charles M. Lewis, 80, Peotone, Ill., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at Riverside Hospital, Kankakee, Ill.
Mr. Lewis was born April 28, 1917, in Peotone, Ill., and lived in Independence for 40 years before returning to Peotone. He was a sales representative for IBM, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Peotone, a Presbyterian church elder and a Mission Strategy member of Presbytery.
His survivors include his wife, Pauline nee Cooper Lewis of the home; two sons, Jim Lewis, Fort Collins, Colo., and Jerry Lewis, Aurora, Colo.; three daughters, Jean Lewis, Gillette, Wyo., Joy R. Jones, New Providence, N.J., and Joanne Lewis, Colorado Springs; the children`s mother, Marian Lewis, Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren, Kim Lewis, Lori Notman, Kristi Jones, Brian Jones and Karen Jones; and two great-grandchildren, Tanner Notman and Zachery Notman.
Services were today at the church. Burial was in Peotone cemetery.
SAL W. PORTO
Sal William Porto, 79, Independence, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Porto was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Harrison, N.Y., before moving to this area in 1981. He worked for Armco Inc. for 40years, retiring as a superintendent in 1981. He was a graduate of Missouri Valley College, took advanced courses in metallurgy from the University of Kansas and management courses from the University of Iowa. He was active in Rotary International and various civic organizations. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence.
His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ella May Vance Porto of the home; three sons, Richard V. Porto, Leawood, Kan., David M. Porto, Alton, Ill., and Robert M. Porto, Oakview, Mo.; two brothers, Alfred G. Porto, Rye Brook, N.Y., and Lawrence Porto, Harrison; one sister, Angelina Pezzella, Harrison; and four grandchildren, Stacie P. Doyle, Laura Porto, Christopher Porto and Elizabeth Porto.
Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or to your favorite charity.
IRENE SHEARER
Irene Engstom, 89, Independence, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Shearer was born April 1, 1908, in Salina, Kan. She graduated from the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing in 1928, and wasa member of the RLDS Professional Nurses Association and the ISH Alumni Association. In her later years, she was a volunteer for the Truman Medical Center-East Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Fellowship chapter of the American Business Women`s Association and sponsored 80 members into the association during her tenure.
Her survivors include four daughters, Beverly Belcher, El Dorado Springs, Mo., Betty Kaplan, Owatonna, Minn., Paula Cokington, Independence, and Pamela Ashley, Raytown; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Memorial services were today at the Ridgewood-Pleasant Heights RLDS Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bob Allison Ataxia Research Center, Minnesota Medical Foundation, P.O. Box 64001, St. Paul, MN 55164-9793. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.
THOMAS A. SLAPE
Thomas Anthony Slape, infant son of Tommy Slape and Rachelle Weeks of Independence, died Thursday, May 8, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
His survivors also include his grandparents, Retha and Frank Stillwell of the home, Thomas Slape, Independence, and Becky and Phil Branch, Kansas City; his great-grandparents, Robert and Katherine Love, Drumwright, Okla., Mary Stillwell, Independence, and Dorothea Terranova, Greersferry, Ark.; his great-great-grandmother, Retha Bittle, Greersferry; and many aunts and uncles.

CARL L. SPECKER
Carl Lee Specker, 58, Odessa, died Friday, May 9, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Speckerwas born Oct. 17, 1938, in Odessa, and was a lifelong Odessa resident. He was a farmer, specializing in row crops, dairy and livestock. He was a member of the Youth for Christ in Kansas City, and a counselor from 1973 to 1981 for the Kansas City Chapter and at camp. He was also a member of the Blue Vue Chapel in Independence and the Odessa Senior Citizens Center.
His survivors include four brothers, W.A. Specker and Everett Specker, both of Odessa, Ora A. Specker, St. Joseph, Mo., and Archie Specker, Ingleside, Texas; and one sister, Helen Adamson, Odessa

CAROL A. DOOLEY
Carol Ann Dooley, 44, Richmond, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at her parents home in Independence.
Mrs. Dooley was born July 26, 1952, in Kansas City, grew up in Independence and lived in Belton, Grandview and Warrensburg in Missouri before moving to Richmond in 1993. She was a substitute teacher for the Richmond R-XVI School District. She previously was Mother`s Day Out teacher at St. Paul`s United Methodist Church in Raymore, Mo., for 14 years. She had been a special education teacher at Raymore/Peculiar High School for two years, Knob Noster, Mo., for two years and at Tipton High School.
She was a graduate of Truman High School, graduated magna cum laude from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Fraternity. She was a delegate for Raymore St. Paul`s United Methodist Church to the annual conference. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Richmond, and was active in the United Methodist Women.
Her survivors include her husband, William J. Dooley, and three daughters, Leah Kathryn Dooley, Elizabeth Anne Dooley and Erin Kristine Dooley, all of the home; her parents, Billy W. and Joyce (McNulty) Nicodemus, Independence; and two brothers, James Nicodemus, Sugar Creek, and David Nicodemus, Independence.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Richmond United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. MILDRED C. KIDWELL
Mildred C. Kidwell, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Kidwell was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Tyndall, S.D., and had lived in Independence since 1956. She was registered nurse for the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital for 20 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Her husband, Ralph L. Kidwell, died Feb. 26, 1966.
Her survivors include four sons, Jim Kidwell, Greenwood, Mo., Dennis Kidwell, Kingsville, Mo., Kevin Kidwell, Lee`s Summit, and Russell Kidwell, Blue Springs; two daughters, Norma Bourne, Platte City, Mo., and Linda Kidwell, Independence; one brother, Norman Schuett, Sun City, Ariz.; one sister, Eileen Boismer, Blue Eye, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Independence Regional Hospice.
LAWRENCE L. MALAM
Lawrence L. "Bud" Malam, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Malam was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Maryville, Mo., and lived in California for 17 years before moving to Independence in 1957. He was a carpenter by trade. He was a World War II veteran in the ETO, serving from 1940 to 1945. He was a life member of the 6th Armored Divison Association and American Legion Post 21, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000. He was a charter member of the El Segundo Optimist Club.
His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ellie Malam; one daughter, Sherry Nielson, Barnard, Mo.; one son, David Malam, Independence; five grandchildren, Amber Hyde, Lindsay Nielson, Emily Nielson, Tracy Nielson and Alexander Malam; and one great-grandson, Colton Hyde.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville, Mo. Burial will be in Miriam cemetery, Maryville. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Sheil Colonial Funeral Home, Kansas City, where prayer services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
JEANETTE McGAW
Jeanette Shrout McGaw, 80, Blue Springs, died Sunday, May 4, 1997, atSt. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. McGaw was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Henry County, Mo. She was a homemaker. She worked for AT&T before she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs. She was a member of the 4-H and PTA, was a Sunday school teacher, was active in the Boy Scouts and helped with the fund-raising efforts for the first band uniforms for Blue Springs High School. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lawrence Shrout in 1967 and Roy McGaw in 1987.
Her survivors include two sons, Lawrence L. Shrout, Roeland Park, Kan., Marion "Marty" D. Shrout, Raymore, Mo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial was in Blue Springs cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
ANTHONY MIHELIC
Anthony Mihelic, 82, Harrisonville, Mo., died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Camden Health Center.
Mr. Mihelic was born May 24, 1914, in Kansas City, Kan. He was a steelworker for Armco Steel for 25 years, retiring in 1977, and was a member of the United Steel Workers Union. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3976. He was a member of the Catholic faith.
His survivors include his wife, Marie Mihelic, Independence; one stepson, Robert J. Palmer, Grandview; one brother, Pat Mihelic, Elrod, Ala.; two sisters, Rose Kremsreiter, Kansas City, and Katy Radowicz, Burbank, Ill.; four stepgrandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

WILLIAM D. PALMER
William Duemler Palmer, 77, Independence, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at Vencor Hospital.
Mr. Palmer was born March 6, 1920, in Springfield, Mo., and spent his early years in Springfield where he attended school. He worked for General Motors in St. Louis before moving to Independence. He worked for the Standard Oil Co. in Sugar Creek from 1947 until 1966 when he went into the insurance business, owning his own company, the William D. Palmer Agency. He was in land development, construction and farming. He was a member of the Independence Rotary Club, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
His survivors include two sisters, Grace L. Green and Lella E. Scott, both of Independence; one niece, Glenda Smith Mulberry, Westchester, Ohio; and a nephews, Jack C. Smith, Tampa, Fla. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. NEVA B. SMITH
Neva Bell Smith, 76, Sugar Creek, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital.
Mrs. Smith was born July 12, 1920, in Atherton and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker, painted china and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Her survivors include her husband, Wilbur R. Smith of the home; one daughter, Glenda Tilsworth, Independence; one sister, Viola May Hooper, Sugar Creek; one granddaughter, Lori Swanson; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Swanson, Erica Swanson and Alexander Swanson; and many nieces and nephews.
