STEVEN A. MULLIS
Steven A. Mullis, 46, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Mullis was born in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident.He was an electrician by trade and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 124. He was a member of Six Mile Baptist Church and the Dystonia Foundation of Kansas City.
His survivors include his wife of 25 years, Cheryl Mullis, one son, Adam Mullis, and one daughter, Danielle Mullis, all of the home; two brothers, Mike Mullis, Tulsa, Okla., and Rod Mustain, Grove, Okla.; and his mother, Betty Mustain, Grove.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Six Mile cemetery, Sibley. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at New Salem Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the cemetery, 17106 E. Third St. Terrace North, Independence, Mo. 64056.
ELVA PEPPER
Elva Fisher Pepper, 87, Slater, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Cox Medical Center-South, Springfield, Mo.
Mrs. Pepper was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Saline County, Mo., and lived in Independence from 1941 until moving to Slater in 1973 She moved to Springfield three weeks ago. She was a retired seamstress with the Nellie Don Garment Co. in Kansas City, and worked for the Big Bend Retreat Nursing Home in Slater after her retirement. Her husband, Donald H. Pepper, died Jan. 7, 1988.
Her survivors include two daughters, Donna Squires, Gilliam, Mo., and Carol Lee Morris, Springfield; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Walker Funeral Home, Slater. Burial will be in Slater City cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Sullivan Hall Activity Fund.
AVERY V. SCOTT
Avery V. Scott, 85, Blue Springs, formerly of Buckner, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mr. Scott was born July 5, 1912, in Linn Creek, Mo. He was a farmer/carpenter in Buckner for several years, and managed Little Village and Buckner Manor Apartments. He was an avid hunter.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret Scott, Blue Springs; two daughters, Cathy Oliver, Blue Springs, and Betty Holt, Independence; one sister, Ethel Jones, Blue Springs; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
HIRAM I. SIMMONS
Hiram Irving Simmons, 94, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at Rosewood Health Care Center.
Mr. Simmons was born June 15, 1903, in Newport, R.I., moved to Independence in 1942, then to Denver in 1957. He returned to Independence in 1971. He was a librarian for the Denver Public Library, retiring in 1971. He was an elder at the RLDS Stone Church and had been a chaplain at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital for 12 years. His wife, Florence Whipple Simmons, died in 1988.
His survivors include one daughter, Joyce Kuhn, Independence; and one granddaughter, Felicia Roth, Blue Springs.
Cremation. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Crysler RLDS Church. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call immediately after the service at his daughter`s home, 3822 S. Trailridge Ave.
FRANCES J. SMITH
Frances J. Smith, 63, Blue Springs, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 14, 1934, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Auxiliary 30, and St. John LaLande Catholic Church, both in Blue Springs.
Her survivors include her husband, Stephen P. Smith of the home; two sons, John Fox, Edgar Springs, Mo., and Daniel Battles, Chilhowee, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Sandra Dohn, Kansas City; six brothers, Carl Rick and Phil Rick, both of Plattsburg, Mo., Edward Rick, Archie, Mo., Frank Rick, Blue Springs, Leon Rick, Kansas City, and Leo Rick, Flemington, Mo.; five sisters, Loretta Evenoff, Josephine Preston and Alberta Adams, all of Kansas City, Lena Waggner, Lyons, Kan., and Edith Johnson, Flemington; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, where prayer services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
TEMPERENCE K. GRANT
Temperence Kathryn Duckworth Grant, 84, Independence, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Grant was born on Jan. 9, 1913, in Independence and had lived in Independence for most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Fairmount Christian Church. She was a member of Koinonia club and Jolly 60s club. Her husband, Francis L. Grant, preceded her in death.
Her survivors include a son, Thomas C. Grant, Independence; and a brother, James G. Duckworth, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
EDWARD J. LARSEN
Edward J. Larsen, 93, Independence, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Larsen was born April 22, 1904, in Fredricksberg, Denmark. He later became a United States citizen and lived most of his life in the Independence area. He was an insurance agent with Prudential Life Insurance Co., retiring in 1964. He was an active elder in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 70 years, attending the Stone Church for 50 years. In recent years he attended the Blue Springs Restoration Branch. He was a charter member of the Independence Lion`s Club. He was active in the People-to-People program and later conducted tours on his own. He was a member of the VASA Order of American Swedish of the American Lodge and a member of Denmark Lodge 56. He was a member of the board of Hope Day School and the board of Rainbow Development Corp. He was a member of the board of directors of the development of Harvest Hills Homeowners Association. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Smith Larsen, in 1992.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret V. Larsen, of the home; five sons, Frederick N. Larsen, Stephen P. Larsen, E. H. "Zeke" Larsen, and L. Peter Larsen, all of Independence, and Daniel M. Larsen, Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, Anina Mackay, Independence; one sister, Ellen Tinning, Denmark; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Stone Church. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. AURELIA M. LOVERIDGE
Aurelia Marie Loveridge, 61, Independence, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Loveridge was born Sept. 13, 1935, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. She was a retired collector for General Electric Co.
Her survivors include two sons, Michael and James Loveridge; one daughter, Victoria Elson; four brothers, Orran William, Noel Fortin, Edmond Joseph and Steven Fortin;five sisters, Laurelie Bolin, Eileen Seabolt, Vivion Shelton, Sandra Ann Botsford and Denise Lawrence; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Charter Funerals Blue Ridge Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Blue Ridge chapel.
MILDRED V. LENTELL
Mildred V.(Chenoweth) Lentell, 72, Sandusky, Ohio, and formerly of the Kansas City area, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at Firelands Community Hospital in Sandusky.
Mrs. Lentell was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Admire, Kan. She was a graduate of Northeast High School in Kansas City. She was the owner and operator of Art by IMEL Inc., where she was a wood carver, painter and artist. She was a member of the Unity Village Church of Kansas City, the National Wood Carver Association and the I.A.B. Club of Sandusky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C.Lentell, in 1989, and one sister, Carol George.
Her survivors include one daughter, Barbara Bergquist, Sandusky; two sons, Thomas Lentell, Wichita, Kan., and Steven Lentell, Milton, Fla.; four sisters, Donna Unangst, Belvidere, N.J., Florence Arnold, Owego, N.Y., Betty Sperry, Boise, Idaho, and Patty Grover, Cherokee Village, Ark.; four brothers, Loren Chenoweth, Topeka, Kan., Bill Chenoweth, Phoenix, Ariz., Mike Chenoweth, Derby, Kan., and Lawrence Chenoweth, Maple Hills, Kan.; five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements conducted by Groff Funeral Home in Sandusky. A Unity Village Church memorial service will be announced later. Burial will be in the Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Cancer Hotline in Kansas City or the American Cancer Society.
G. MAXINE RECORD G. Maxine Record, 79, Independence, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Record was born March 8, 1918, in Nevada, Mo., and was a lifelong resident of the Independence area. She owned Record Appliance, Truman Record Realty and Century 21-Grafton Realtors. She was a member of the Independence Young Matrons, the Eastern Jackson County Board of Realtors, the Women`s Council of Realtors, the Independence Lion`s Club Auxiliary, S.A.F., the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Golden Acres Women`s Club, Golden Acres Bridge Club, and the Young Matrons Bridge Club. She was an election judge and a senior volunteer at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center. She helped organize the Women`s Council of Realtors in Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Truman Record, on June 12, 1986.
Her survivors include two sons, David Record, Independence, and Gerald Record, Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Glenna Lunceford, Independence, and Jacqueline Fairbanks, Blue Springs; two sisters, Meta Geer and Vida Rogers, both of Independence; one brother, Elmer Butler, Sequim, Wash.; her companion, Hal Burdick; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Internment will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.
WILLIAM M. SHELLEY
William Mulkey Shelley, 73, Blue Springs, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Shelley was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Ash Flat, Ark. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a past master of Saxton Masonic Lodge No. 508 in St. Joseph, Mo. He was general manager of operations of the Hastings Hide Co., a division of A.J. Hollander, in Hastins, Neb., until his retirement in 1987. He was preceded in death by one son, Stephen LeRoy Shelley, in October 1986, and one brother, Orphis Shelley, in 1990.
His survivors include his wife, June Shelley, of the home; three sons, Dr. Clyde Shelley, Blue Springs, Jeff Shelley, Garden City, Kan., and Dale Shelley, Newtown, Pa.; two sisters, Arline Taylor, Sikeston, Mo., and Clevil Shelley, Blue Springs; one brother, Bryan Kent, Topeka, Kan.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Fleming Park Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Blue Springs. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ashland cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may call from noon until service time at the church on Monday. The family suggests contributions to the American Kidney Foundation.
KATHLEEN A. WHITWORTH
Kathleen Ann Whitworth, 52, Independence, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Whitworth was born Sept. 30, 1944, in Arkansas City, Kan. She lived in the Independence area for more than 30 years. She worked as a reimbursement analyst for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas City for 26 years, retiring in 1996. She was a former member of the King of Glory Lutheran Church of Independence.
Her survivors include two sons, Bret W. Whitworth, Kansas City, and Brian J. Whitworth, Independence; one brother, Donald Rippe, Manhattan, Kan.; and two grandchildren, Dalton and Jordin.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Lawn cemetery in Arkansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Kathleen Whitworth Grandchildren Fund.
PEARL E.A. COX
Pearl Evelyn Agnes Mix Cox, 89, Warrensburg, Mo., died Monday, May 19, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mrs. Cox was born Oct. 7, 1907, near Osborn, Mo., and lived in Hubbard and Cleveland Heights in Ohio, before returning to Osborn. She moved to Warrensburg in 1977. She graduated in 1926 from Osborn Public High School. With a county teacher`s certificate, she began teaching at the Highland country school for two years, at the same time attending the teacher`s college at Maryville. She received a Sixty Life Certificate, then taught one year at the Eudora country school near Burlington Junction, Mo. She received a bachelor`s degree from Central Missouri College in Warrensburg in 1958 and a master`s degree in 1962. She taught the Hamilton, Mo., fourth grade for one year and the fourth grade at Robinson Elementary in Raytown from 1959 until she retired in 1973.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution Major Molly Chapter in Hamilton, several genealogy societies, ABC Club in Warrensburg and several other organizations. She wrote and published the histories of her parents, "The Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Lyon Mix" in 1979, and the "Durbin-Witt-Wagers-Richardson-Stephens and Related Families via Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri" in 1987.
Her survivors include two daughters, Carol Lynn Brown, Independence, and Emily E. Bell, Warrensburg; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Osborn. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Osborn. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
MARK D. DAVIS
Mark D. Davis, 36, Oak Grove, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Davis was born Oct. 26, 1960, in Kansas City, Kan., and had lived in Oak Grove for seven years. He was self-employed and a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.
His survivors include his parents, Virgil "Skip" and Gloria Davis of the home.
Memorial services will be at 7 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 6 to 7 tonight at the chapel. THELMA V. MICHAEL
Thelma V. Michael, 84, Independence, died Monday, May 19, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Michael was born April 19, 1913, in Kansas City. Her husband, Edward A. Michael Sr., died in 1990.
Her survivors include two sons, Edward A. Michael Jr., Independence, and Donald C. Michael, Kansas City; three daughters, Mary E. Dalton, Lenexa, Kan., Judy L. Stewart, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Sandra S. Fultz, Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, Donald E. Hutchison, Nowaa, Okla.; three sisters, Dorothy Wood, Kansas City, Ada Wood, Springfield, Mo., and Ruth Taylor, Buckner; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
DOROTHY E. PARKER
Dorothy E. Parker, 77, Independence, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Parker was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Savannah, Ga., and had lived in Independence since 1952. She was a secretary in the Safety Department at Armco Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1983.
Her survivors include her husband, Harold A. Parker of the home; one son, Robert L. Milliren, Orlando, Fla.; one brother, John Weihman, St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister, Margaret Brooks, Gulf Port, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.
