MARGARET S. WILLIAMS
Margaret S. Williams, 95, Gladstone, Mo., died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Williams was born Feb. 2, 1902, in Warrensburg, Mo. She graduated from high school and received a teachers certificate from Central State Teachers College. She taught school for one year in Maryville, Mo. At the beginning of World War II, she was a group leader in Building No. 35 at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. After the war, she enrolled in the Kansas City College of Commerce and majored in accounting, and stayed as an office manager until 1952. In 1952, she became a comptroller for The Associates in Kansas City, and later became a licensed real estate broker in Missouri and Kansas. She was a member of the Kansas City Real Estate Board of Realtors, secretary and treasurer of Sales Associates Inc. and was director of economic research for Appraisal Associates Inc. She was a past member of the Kansas City Women`s Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Down Towners and a 50-year member of the Women`s Altrusa Club. She played softball and basketball in high school and college and was an avid golfer. She played at the Woman`s National Senior Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Callaway Gardens in Pine Tree, Ga., and in Little Rock, Ark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Williams in 1956.
Her survivors include one son, Arthur L. Williams II of the home; one daughter, Lucile Smith, Kansas City; one sister, Ferdie Akins, Independence; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Son White Chapel in Gladstone.
ANNA B. BAILEY
Anna B. Bailey, 66, Windsor, Mo., died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Bailey was born Oct. 28, 1930, in Decatur, Ill. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church of Leeton, Mo., and the Assembly of God, Warrensburg, Mo. She was also a member of the Eastern Star in Buckner, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Allen Bailey, on Aug. 25, 1996.
Her survivors include two daughters, Mariannena Smith and Karla Merrill, both of Windsor; three brothers, David Beneze, Colorado Springs, Colo., John A. Beneze, Piper City, Ill., and Phillip Beneze, Firestone, Colo.; three sisters, Mary McCain and Ester McCloy, both of Decatur, and Jane E. Taylor, Lexington, Ky.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services and burial were today at Mineral Creek cemetery, Leeton. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Warrensburg.
DONALD R. COX Donald R. Cox, 54, Independence, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Cox was born Oct. 13, 1942, in St. Louis and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a pressman at Burd and Fletcher for 14 years.
His survivors include three sons, Dusty Cox, Charlie Cox and Donald Cox Jr., one daughter, Shanna Drake, and his mother and stepfather, Viola and Jack Knight, all of Independence; two sisters, Olive Keith, Overland Park, Kan., and Helen Quijas, Kansas City, Kan.; two brothers, Jack Knight, Raymore, Mo., and Frank Cox, Kansas City; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel.
VIRGINIA F. FREE
Virginia F. Free, 71, Independence, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Free was born May 29, 1925, in Kansas City and was a lifelong resident of the Independence area. She was a foreman for the National Screen Service, a member of the W.O.M.P.I.`s and a junior steward for the I.A.T.S.E. She was a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Free in February 1997.
Her survivors include one son, Edward Shelley, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two daughters, Cathleen Sanders, Independence, and Julia Thornton, Blue Springs; a granddaughter, Ginger Pixley, Independence; five other grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were today at the church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Kansas City. Arrangements were under the direction of Sheil Colonial Chapel, Kansas City.
ALVERNA I. JACKSON
Alverna I. Jackson, 72, Independence, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Jackson was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Winnabago, Neb., and had lived in the Independence area for 40 years. She was office manager for Dr. Ben Abella, her son-in-law. She was a member of the Nu Voice Club, Raytown Historical Society and the St. Joseph Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Jackson, in 1981.
Her survivors include one daughter, Terry Abella, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Elmer Moore, Winnabago; two sisters, Dorothy Smith, Santa Fe, N.M., and Hazel Lucart, Port Angeles, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Gregory Abella, Kent Abella and Analeta Olden.
Graveside services were today at Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Jean Jugan Center of the Little Sisters of the Poor or the University of Kansas Cancer Center. Arrangements were under the direction of Sheil Colonial Chapel, Kansas City.
WILLIAM KENNEDY
William Kennedy, 84, Marshall, Mo., died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at Mar-Saline Manor in Marshall.
Mr.Kennedy was born Nov. 15, 1912, in Shackelford, Mo., and lived in Malta Bend, Mo., before moving to Marshall eight years ago. He owned and operated Kennedy Locker Service in Malta Bend for three years and retired from M.F.A. Elevator after 10 years. He had also been a farmer. He was preceded in death by a son, William Albert Kennedy.
His survivors include his wife, Alberta Mitchell of the home; three sons, John Kennedy, Blackburn, Mo., and Mark Kennedy and Pat Kennedy, both of Marshall; two daughters, Aileene "Kathy" Green and Margaret "Maggie" Harris, both of Marshall; two brothers, Francis Kennedy, Marshall, and Donald L. Kennedy, Vienna, Va.; three sisters, Ruth Addington and Betty Lenihan, both of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Sister Mary Jo Kennedy, Independence; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter`s Catholic Church, Marshall. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary`s cemetery, Shackelford. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home, Marshall, where prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the organ fund or the bell tower fund at the church.
EDMUND A. MEHNER
Edmund A. Mehner, 89, Independence, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at Parklane Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Mehner was born in Longtown, Mo. He was a machinist for Ford Motor Co.for 40 years. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.
His survivors include his wife, Esther Mehner of Independence; two daughters, Doris Gramlich, Kansas City, and Hallie Reynolds, Santa Barbara, Calif.; one sister, Lydia Voltz, Kansas City; one brother, Velmer Mehner, Perryville, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the church.
JAMES H. RENICK James Hunter Renick, 82, Odessa, formerly of Independence, died Monday, May 26, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Renick was born Oct. 8, 1914, in Odessa, and lived in Odessa, Fairbanks, Alaska, Independence, and Bates City before returning to Odessa in 1987. He was a sheet metal installerfor the Union Local 2 Sheet Metal Workers International Association. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 5675 and the First Christian Church, both in Odessa. His wife, Myrabelle Baker Schmidt Renick, died April 17, 1994.
His survivors include two stepsons, Fred Schmidt, Rochester, Minn., and Leon Schmidt, Minneapolis, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Marilyn Aldrich, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; one brother, Lloyd Allen Renick, and one sister, Mary Louise Sanders, both of Odessa; eight step grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Odessa cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa. The family suggests contribution to the church of the American Heart Association.
JAMES D. ROARK
James D. Roark, 86, Independence, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Roark was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Clinton County, Mo., and had lived in Independence for the past 45 years. He was an operating engineer for Unity School of Christianity for 21 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Antioch Community Church of Kansas City, Unity School of Christianity, McDonald Masonic Lodge 324 and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite.
His survivors include his wife, Marjorie Roark of the home; one stepdaughter, Brenda C. Blank, Burk, Va.; one sister, Doris McVey, St. Joseph, Mo.; and one step granddaughter.
Services were today at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
LUTHER E. SARTIN
Luther Ellsworth Sartin, 89, Warrensburg, Mo., died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia, Mo.
Mr. Sartin was born March 8, 1908, in Warsaw, Mo., and had lived in the Warrensburg area since 1930. He was a graduate of Warsaw High School and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Warrensburg Restoration Branch. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel L. Curtis Sartin in 1963, and married
Merle M. Richardson in 1968.
His survivors include his wife, Margene Guest of the home; two daughters, Mary Jo Sartin, Sedalia, and Susan A. Talcott, Independence; four step-daughters, Maureen Peterson, Corpus Christi, Texas, Connie Owings, Columbia, Mo., Kristeen Cox, Sedalia, and Kathe DeShon, St. Joseph, Mo.; one son, John C. Sartin, Warrensburg; one stepson, Wayne Richardson, High Ridge, Mo.; one sister, Lucille Baldwin and one brother, Robert Sartin, both of Warrensburg; six grandchildren, Curt Talcott, Jeff Talcott, Mark Talcott, Jill Sartin, Bryan Sartin and Kevin Sartin, grandchildren, 19 step grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Williams Funeral Chapel, Warrensburg. Burial will be in Sunset Hill cemetery, Warrensburg. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the building fund at the church.
DONNA M. SAVAGE
Donna Mae Savage, 58, Independence, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Savage was born April 25, 1939, in Watertown, S.D., and had lived in Independence most of her life.
Her survivors include her husband, Forrest Savage of the home; one daughter, Charlotte Raines, Weston, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Patricia Savage, Independence; six sisters, Joyce Lockhart, Pauline Wilson and Betty Lou Lockhart, all of Independence, Juanita Petree, Sedalia, Mo., Mary Henley, Florida, and Sandra Thurman, Arkansas;one brother, John Lockhart, Arkansas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
ELSIE M. SINGLETON
Elsie Mae (Starks) Singleton, 89, Warsaw, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the Warsaw Health Care Center.
Mrs. Singleton was born Oct. 14, 1907, in Independence, and lived in Independence until 1970, and in Cross Timbers, Mo., before moving to Warsaw. She attended Fairmount Grade School and graduated from Northeast High School. She was a homemaker, enjoyed league bowling and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Independence. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by one son, Harold M. Singleton Jr. Her survivors include her husband of 71 years, Harold Singleton of the home;one son, Elmer Singleton, Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were today in Fairview cemetery, Cross Timbers. Arrangements were under the direction of Cantlon Funeral Home, Urbana, Mo.
ROY L. TINOCO
Roy L. Tinoco, 57, Independence, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr.Tinoco was born June 21, 1939, in Topeka and had lived in Independence for 34 years. He was a printer specialist operator for the Reynolds Metals Can Plant. He was a member of St. Mark`s Catholic Church, American G.E. Forum, Knights of Columbus and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
His survivors include his wife, Mary Polina Tinoco of the home; one daughter, Olivia Tinoco Easton, Sugar Creek; and one brother, Robert Tinoco, Topeka.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Mary`s section of Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.Wednesday at the chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
SARAH L. WEST
Sarah Louise West, 81, Kansas City, died Friday, May 23, 1997.
Mrs. West was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Billingsley, Ala., and moved to Kansas City in 1923. She was a 1933 graduate of Central High School, a member of the original Linwood Baptist Church and was a long term supporter of community Christian activities including, KCCV, Youth for Christ and Calvary Bible College. She and her parents, Jeffie and Alfred N. "Pat" Hall, built Pat`s Pig in 1932, located at 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard in Kansas City. Pat`s Pig, from the 1930s to 1950s, was a well known barbecue restaurant. She was a long term employee andretired from Katz Drug Store.
Her survivors include a son, David R. Workman, Littleton, Colo.; two daughters, Marilyn Margrave, Kansas City, and Linda Netterville, Lee`s Summit; six grandchildren, David J. Workman, Dan Workman, Diane Workman, Patty Corkran, Tom Margrave and Andrew Netterville; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were today at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mid-America NutritionMeals on Wheeles, 120 W. Second, Ottawa, Kan. 66067.
ALTA M. ZUMWALT
Alta May Zumwalt, 97, Independence, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at Rosewood Health Center.
Mrs. Zumwalt was born May 4, 1900, in Lake City, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a sales clerk for the Jones Store Co. for 13 years, retiring in 1962. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Zumwalt in 1950, and a granddaughter in February 1997.
Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Elic Green, Longmont, Colo.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.
ROSAMOND E. CLEAVER
Rosamond Evelyn Cleaver, 88, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Cleaver was born March 11, 1909, in Cleburn, Kan., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a member of St. Mark`s United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Rowan Francis Cleaver in 1975.
Her survivors include one son, William L. Jones, and one daughter, Rowena R. Goodwin, both of Independence; a foster son, David H. Jones, Williamsburg, Va.; one brother, Wynn D.Jones, and one sister, Cherry C. Jones, both of Independence; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Charter Funerals/Blue Ridge Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
NORMAS. HAMILTON
Norma Sue Hamilton, 56, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998.
Her survivors include two sons, Jeff Hamilton, Blue Springs, and Larry Hamilton, Lawrence, Kan.; two sisters, Rosalee Houston, Buckner, and Barbara Ricker, Warrensburg, Mo.; three brothers, William C. Milligan, Cole Camp, Mo., Elwood Milligan, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Glen Milligan, Warrensburg; and one granddaughter, Kristian W. Hamilton.
Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Free Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
