WILLIAM B. FIRKINS
William B. Firkins, 102, Sugar Creek, died Thurdsday, July 17, 1997, at Independence Health Care Center.
Mr. Firkins was born June 14, 1895, in Hamilton, Iowa. He moved to the area in 1917 and was a streetcar driver in Kansas City from 1921 to 1956. He was a charter member of the Carlisle Baptist Church and a member of the Area Transit Authority Seniors Club and the Fairmount Seniors Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Rue Anna Stark, Sugar Creek, a sister, Mary Wallis, Chula Vista, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. His wife, Rue Abigail died in 1971.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carlisle Baptist Church building fund.
GEORGE H. HECK SR.
George Howard Heck Sr., 76, Independence, died Friday, July 18, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Heck was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Bethel, Kan., and had lived in the area since 1950. He was a steel puller for Armco Steel for more than 38 years before retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge #76, Member of the Ararat Shrine Temple Scottish Rite, American Legion Post #21 and provost and a member of the Eastern Star. He served aboard a submarine in the Navy during World War II.
His survivors include a wife, Mary Lee Heck, of the home; a son, George Howard Heck Jr., Blue Springs; two daughters, Cindy L. Wilson and Debra J. Peters, both of Independence; a brother, Robert L. Heck, Louisberg, Kan.; a sister Gerry Heck, Overland Park, Kan., five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. A Masonic Lodge service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics.
ROSEMARY SHAWHAN
Rosemary Shawhan, 74, Independence, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Shawhan was born Sept. 6, 1922, in Kansas City, Kan., and was a lifelong resident of the metro area. She worked for Guys Foods in Liberty before retiring in 1990. She was a member of St. Ann`s Catholic Church and Eagles #3717.
Her survivors include two sons, Jim Shawhan and Terry Shawhan, both of Independence; a daughter, Debbie Houseman, Independence; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, James W. Shawhan, died earlier.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann`s Catholic Church building fund.
HELEN SHOSTERMAN
Helen Parker Shosterman, 81, Independence, died Thurdsay, July 17, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Shosterman was born March 28, 1916, in Escataupa, Miss. She had lived in this area since 1960 and was a nurse`s aide at Resthaven before retiring in 1972. She was previously employed at the sanitarium. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the Stone Church.
Her survivors include two sons, Robert A.G. Merrill, Seattle, Wash., and Ron Merrill, Blue Springs; three daughters, Antionette Bonhotal, Tuscon, Ariz., Jean Youngbauer, St. Louis, and Rita Morgan, Independence; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One son, James Leslie William "Billy" Merrill died earlier.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Pine Crest cemetery in Mobile, Ala. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Outreach International.
HAROLD A. WALL
Harold Albert Wall, 85, Independence, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Wall was born in Pisgah, Iowa, and had lived in this area since 1980. He had been a salesman for the Sioux City Stationery Co., before retiring in 1979. He was a captain during World War II and in recent years he had been a chaplain at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Stone Church.
His survivors include his wife, Estella L. Wall, of the home;a son, Richard C. Wall, Pilot Point, Texas; a daughter, Marsha K. Brown, Independence; and four grandchildren. A son, Craig Wall, died in 1954.
Graveside services will be at a later date at the Wisner cemetery in Wisner Nebraska. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggets contributions to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund.
JAMES M. WARREN SR.
James M. Warren Sr., 73, Belton, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Warren was born Jan. 4, 1924, in Ames, Iowa, and lived in the Belton area for 29 years. He was a minister for 21 years at Ruskin Heights Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Florence G. Warren, of the home; a son, James M. Warren, Jr., Blue Springs; two daughters, Diana Dunn, Stillwater, Minn., and Pam Samuelson, Kansas City; a sister, Helen Gerboth, Minnesota, and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Ruskin Heights Presbyterian Church. The body will be cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to the church`s memorial fund.
THEODORE R. CRENSHAW
Theodore R. Crenshaw, 77, Oakland, Ark., formerly of Independence, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Crenshaw was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Hays, Kan. He moved to Eastern Jackson County in 1925 and attended schools in Independence until he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific area, including Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was a Chief Pharmacist Mate. He was also stationed in China, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Kansas City. He then joined the Submarine Service in Connecticut. After retirement he lived in Louisiana for many years before moving to northern Arkansas.
His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Melba Crenshaw of the home; two daughters, Phyllis Crenshaw, Kansas City, and Tali Groz, Pennsylvania; a son, Eric Crenshaw, Alabama; four sisters, Alice Crenshaw and Gertrude Watson, both of Kansas City, Twillamae Christian, Blue Springs, and Charlotte Powers, Florida.
Services were Wednesday at the Roller Funeral Home Chapel, Mountain Home, Ark.
MEDA E. REEDY
Meda E. Reedy, 95, Independence, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at the Independence Manor Care Center.
Mrs. Reedy was born in Avalon, Mo., and lived in Independence for 60 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Fairmount Christian Church and The Joy Bells Group.
Her survivors include a daughter, Louise Wilson, Independence; a granddaughter, Tandy Bardon, Gladstone, Mo.; a sister, Mildred Roberts, Odessa; two brothers, Raymond Phipps, Blue Springs, and Elmer Phipps, Rayville, Mo.; and a great-grandson.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
JEAN S. REIFF
Jean S. Reiff, 73, Independence, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at the Independence Health Care Center.
Mrs. Reiff was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Manulus, Ill., and had lived in this area since 1946. She had been a secretary in the office of the Presiding Patriarch of the RLDS Church for 27 years, retiring in 1987. She was awarded the Employee of the Year in 1986. She had been a member of the Walnut Park RLDS Church since 1954 and was the first woman to be ordained Elder in their congregation.
Her survivors include her husband, Arvin E. Reiff of the home; two sons, Stephen D. Reiff, Waterford, Conn., and Thomas E. Reiff, Independence; a daughter, Barbara R. Thornton, Independence; a sister, Kathryn Stinson, Rock Falls, Ill.; and four grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund.
FLOYD G. SARTAIN
Floyd Gary Sartain, 58, Independence, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Sartain was born April 1, 1939, in Springield, Mo., where he lived before moving to Independence 30 years ago. He was an artist for Hallmark Cards for 20 years before his retirement in 1987. He was an Air Force veteran.
His survivors include his children, Chris Sartain, Lee`s Summit, Sheila Snyder, Sheryl Teller and Greg Sartain, all of Independence; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Leavenworth National cemetery.
BEULAH A. SCHANNUTH
Beulah A. Schannuth, 78, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Schannuth was born March 23, 1919, in Lee`s Summit, and had lived for 42 years in Independence before moving to Lee`s Summit 1 1/2 years ago. She was a beautician for 14 years on the Independence Square during World War II and after the war ended she was a school bus driver for the Pace School Bus Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1982. She was one of the last two charter members of the Church of Christ, Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Armin J. Schannuth in 1987 and a son, Robert A. "Bob" Schannuth in 1996.
Her survivors include a daughter, Bonnie K. Schannuth of the home; a stepson, Armin William Schannuth, Independence; a brother, Franklin Kreeger, DeBary, Fla.; a stepbrother, Almer Anderson, Raytown; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the Heart of America Hospice.
HARVEY R. COLSTON
Harvey Richard Colston, 70, Independence, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Colston was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Independence. He was a 1945 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He was employed for 13 years at the Standard Oil Refinery before working 26 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1986. He served in the Navy See Bees in World War II and during the Korean War. He was a member of the Susquehanna Assembly of God Church. During his lifetime he donated 64 gallons of blood in the Kansas City Blood Bank.
His survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Colston of the home; a son, Harvey Richard Colston Jr., Independence; two daughters, Jamie Lou Pemberton, Independence, and Mary Ann Colston, Blue Springs; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Carson & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Buckner Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the City Union Mission in Kansas City, Mo.
FLOYD HENSLEY
Floyd Hensley, 91, Odessa, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at St. Mary`s Blue Springs Hospital.
Mr. Hensley was born Aug. 22, 1905, in Hancock, Mo. He was a farmer and worked at the Lake City Ammunition Plant from 1958 to 1970. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Odessa for 55 years. He had lived in Odessa since 1941. A daughter, Reba Mae Schlickelman proceeded him in death in 1975.
His survivors include his wife of 73 years, Maggie Caroline Hensley of the home; two sons, Ralph Q. Hensley and David F. Hensley, both of Odessa; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ralph O. Jones Chapel in Odessa. Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery in Independence. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. Memorials may be sent to the Church of Christ or Odessa Senior Citizens Center.
DUSTIN J. McCOLLOM
Dustin Jewell McCollom, 23, Kansas City, died Friday, June 6, 1997, at his home.
He was born in Columbia on Oct. 2, 1973.He was a graduate of Lincoln Prep High School in Kansas City and attended Northwest Missouri State University, where he was a member of the Kappa Sig Fraternity. He worked for Hy Vee in Kansas City.
His survivors include his parents, Leroy and Sue McCollom of the home; a brother, Shawn McCollom, Blue Springs; and a grandmother, Joyce Ninemire, El Dorado Springs, Mo.
Services were Monday morning. Contributions can be made to Hospice of Greater Kansas City.
DAVID A. OWNBEY
David Arthur "Butch" Ownbey, 46, Odessa, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Ownbey was born Sept. 10, 1950, in Kansas City and had lived in Independence before moving to Odessa in 1984. He was employed by Darrell Schloman Masonry Co., Odessa. He was a graduate of Raytown High School.
His survivors include a daughter, Cristy Lynn Armstrong, Independence; a son, David Arthur Ownbey Jr., Carrollton, Mo.; his mother, Margaret Vardy of the home; and four sisters, Denis Vanlanker, Odessa, Barbara Huggins, Belton, Donna Vanlanker, Blue Springs, and Darlene Huggins, Independence.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.
ALICE E. ROWLAND
Alice E. Rowland, 74, Olathe, Kan., died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at the Johnson County Nursing Center in Olathe.
Ms. Rowland was born Oct. 25, 1922, in Lone Jack and had lived in the Kansas City area all her life. She worked at Lake City Munitions Plant, Kroger food stores, and as a postal clerk at the General Post office in Kansas City. She was also the first female cab driver for the Independence Cab Co.
Her survivors include her son, Mike Rowland, Olathe; a brother, Richard Atwell, Independence; a sister, Shirley Southerland, Wister, Okla.; a cousin, Nioma Watson, Kansas City; and four grandchildren, Mari Smyth, and Alicia, Nick and John Rowland.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Olathe. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Muehlebach Funeral Home, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer`s Association.
