David L. Birt
David L. Birt, 63, Independence, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at the Medical Center of Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Kathleen Birt of the home; five sons, David Birt, Austin, Texas, Steven and Kathleen Birt, Santa Anna, Calif., Curtis Birt and Paul Birt, both of Independence, and Larry and Laurie Birt, Overland Park, Kan.; three brothers, William Burgett, Goodyear, Ariz., Michael Burgett, Maryland, and Jimmie Burgett, Independence.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at Sheil Colonial Funeral Chapel.
Juanita Collins
Juanita Collins, 78, Independence, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Collins was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Saline County, Mo. Before her retirement, she was a cosmetologist. She was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry C. Collins in 1998.
Her survivors include her daughter, Teresa Coffer; three sons, Joe Collins, Ronnie Collins and Robert Collins, all of Independence; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
Helen L. Feeney
Helen Louise Feeney, 74, Independence, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Feeney was born Aug. 10, 1925, in DeWitt, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area since 1952. She had been a social services secretary for the State of Missouri until retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Retired State Employees Association and the First United Methodist Church of Independence.
Her survivors include a son, John r. Troutman, Peoria, Ill.; a daughter, Mary T. Call, Lee's Summit; two brothers, Frank Gross, Independence, and Henry Gross, Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Laura Sullivan, Moberly, Mo., and Margaret Thomas, Independence; and two grandchildren, Christopher J. Troutman and Joanna Troutman.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Evergreen cemetery, DeWitt. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or to the First United Methodist Church of Independence, Memorial Fund.
Donald Harbaugh
Donald Harbaugh, 50, Independence, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Harbaugh was born Dec. 19, 1949, in Kansas City, where he graduated from grade school before moving to Omaha, Neb., in 1959. He then moved to Glen Ellyn, Ill., in 1964, where he attended junior college. He later resided in Philadelphia, Pa., and Lander, Wyo., before returning to Kansas City in 1983. For the past 17 years, he had been employed by Little Blue Valley Sewer District as an engineer technician.
His survivors include his parents, Del and Verlee Harbaugh of Independence; an uncle, Lee Roy Anderson, Kansas City; and many cousins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the chapel.
Norma J. Hightower
Norma Jean Hightower, 71, Independence, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Hightower was born Nov. 12, 1928, in Independence and lived all of her life in this area.
Her survivors include her husband, Lawrence D. Hightower of the home; three sons, Robert Craig Hightower and Jeffrey Duane Hightower, Blue Springs, and Stuart Lindsay Hightower, Lee's Summit; a brother, Kinzy Grayer Jr., Niceville, Fla.; five sisters, Darcy 'Mickey' Temple and Mary Huffman, both of Independence, Betty Rice, Oklahoma City, Okla., Martha Parker, Clinton, Mo., and Virginia Pate, Oak Grove; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Brian A. Moore
Brian A. Moore, 36, Odessa, died Thursday, March 2, 2000.
Mr. Moore was born Oct. 19, 1963, in Jonesboro, Ark., and had lived in Independence before moving to Odessa in 1975. He married
Lisa Jilyn Willard on June 29, 1985, in Odessa. He had owned and managed Moore Construction Co., Odessa, since 1985. He built houses and developed tracts of land for future housing in Odessa and western Lafayette County. He was a 1982 graduate of Odessa High School and the Lex-La-Ray Vo-Tech School in Lexington, Mo., where he studied under the building trades program. He was a member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and a past member of the Odessa Puddle Jumper's Committee.
His survivors include his wife, Lisa Moore, three sons, Aaron Clayton, Addison Cole and Landon Ash Moore, all of the home; his father and mother, Olen D. and Lavonne Moore, Odessa; his brother, Randy Moore, Odessa; his sister, Cara Dahlor, Trimble, Mo.; maternal grandmother, Maggie Grimes, Jonesboro, Ark.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Odessa High School Gym. Burial will be in the Odessa cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brian A. Moore Scholarship Fund, Lex-La-Ray Vo-Tech Building Trades Program.
Joe G. Murphy
Joe Gwin Murphy, 82, Ava, Mo., died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center, Ava.
Mr. Murphy was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Almartha, Mo. He was a retired school teacher and farmer. He was a lifelong resident of the Almartha and Ava areas. He was a member of the Souder Church of Christ and the Masonic Lodge Rockbridge Lodge 435 and Eastern Star. His wife, Anna Mae Blair Murphy, preceded him in death in 1975.
His survivors include his wife, Juanita Gardner Murphy of the home; four sons, Joe Gwin and Vida Walker, Topeka, Kan., Arthur Ray and Sharon Murphy and John Wayne and Jewell Murphy, Independence, Ora Dwain and Sue Murphy, Mountain Grove, Mo.; eight grandsons; a granddaughter; five great-granddaughters; and eight great-grandsons.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava. Burial will be in Souder cemetery, south of Ava. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
ROY A. SOWERS
Roy Allen Sowers, 80, Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Independence Health Care Center.
Mr. Sowers was born June 9, 1918, near Mayview, Mo., and had lived in Odessa before moving to Independence 33 years ago. He owned Sowers Construction Co. of Independence until his retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Bonnie Sowers of the home; a daughter, Rosemary Rose, Blue Springs; a brother, James Kelly Sowers, Independence; a sister, Frances Beryl Meyer, McCloud, Okla.; five grandchildren, Tamara Oldham, Steven Bowlin, Michael Fisher, Bryan Rose, Cheryl Thrasher; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Thursday at the Odessa cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Kansas City. Arrangements are under the direction of the Husman-Sparks-McDowell Fuenral Home, Odessa.
CHRISTOPHER D. SHAW
Christopher Dale Shaw, 48, Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at Truman Medical Center.
Mr. Shaw was born Aug. 7, 1950, in Independence and lived in this area, Tucson, Ariz., and El Cajon, Calif., before returning to Independence in 1971. He was a jeweler and antique dealer, and operated an antique and collectibles shop in Fairmount. He was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation.
His survivors include a brother, Bill C. Shaw, Independence; a sister, Genelee Searle, Hickory Hills, Ill.; and two nephews, Doug and Ralph Shaw.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ridgewood RLDS Church, 4341 Blue Rdige Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the RLDS Temple Endowment Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
MELCENA MILLER SCHEIDHAUER
Melcena Miller Scheidhauer, 79, Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Scheidhauer was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Mercer County, Pa. She worked in the shipping department at Herald House and at Resthaven. She was a convert to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had later been associated with the Center Branch in Independence.
Her survivors include her mother, Bessie Miller, Greenville, Pa.; a daughter, Faye Shaw, Lamoni, Iowa.; a son, Ronald Ruhlman, Transfer, Pa.; two grandsons, David Shaw, Shawnee, Kan., and Steve Ruhlman, Blue Springs; a granddaughter, Chrystal Frank, Grant, Iowa.; four sisters, Oleta Higbee, Lake Mary, Fla., Dottie LaSalle, Lake Mary, Fla., Twila Jean McDowell, Greenville, Pa., and Alice Reichard, Transfer, Pa.; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Center Branch on Maple Street. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home in Blue Springs.
RONNIE J. CRAVENS
Ronnie J. Cravens, 24, Independence, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
His survivors include his parents, James H. and Cynthia Marie Cravens, Kansas City; two brothers, Ricky and Zephaniah; five sisters, Nicole, Rickisha, Cynthia, Danielle and Crystal; and his paternal grandmother, Barbara Matthews, and maternal grandmother, Marie Brown, both of Kansas City.
Services were Tuesday at the Grandview Assembly of God Church. Burial was in Mount Moriah cemetery, Kansas City. Arrangements were under the direction of the E.K. George & Sons Grandview Chapel.
DONALD E. KENNEY
Donald Eugene Kenney, 73, Enid, Okla., died Monday, July 28, 1997, at the Enid St. Mary`s Mercy Hospital.
Mr. Kenney was born Nov. 8, 1923, in Joplin, Mo. He graduated in 1942 from the Alva (Okla.) High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He graduated in 1949 with a bachelor`s degree in biology and chemistry from Northwestern State College. He earned his master`s degree in 1961 in school administration from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. He taught school in Hooker, Okla.; Amarillo, Texas; Chinle, Ariz.; and Fort Defiance, Ariz. He was the high school principal for 12 years in Gila Bend, Ariz. He was employed in the quality control lab of the Arizona Department of Transportation before moving to Yuma, Ariz., where he worked for the highway department, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
His survivors include his wife, Velma Kenney of the home; a daughter, Janet Bollow, Batavia, Ill.; twin sons, John Kenney, Mountain Green, Utah, and Gene Kenney, Blue Springs; two brothers, Arthur Franklin Kenney Jr., Jacksonville, Texas, and Douglas Kenney, Mason City, Iowa; and seven grandchildren, Karyn Burrows, Shannon Kenney, Travis, Todd and Tyler Kenney, Aaron and Brian Bollow; and a great-granddaughter, Savannah Skye Kenney.
Services were today at the Wharton (Okla.) Funeral Chapel. Interment was in Alva Municipal cemetery, Alva, Okla. The family suggests contributions in his memory to the Alva Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or NWOSU foundation.
JUANITA F. SQUIRE
Juanita F. Squire, 83, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at St. Mary`s Manor of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Squire was born July 26, 1914, in Osborn, Mo., and had lived most of her life in the Kansas City area. She was a member of the Osborn United Methodist Church and a member of the Keystone Climbers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Squire, in 1981.
Her survivors include three sons, Herbert T. Squire, Richmond, Va., David L. Squire, Olathe, Kan., and Martin L. Squire, Blue Springs; two daughters, Juanita J. Harris, Lowell, Ark., and Pamela R. Squire, Blue Springs; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the ParkLawn Chapel. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Hospice of St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
THEODORE R. CRENSHAW
Theodore R. Crenshaw, 77, Oakland, Ark., died Monday, July 14, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Crenshaw was a retired medical corpsman serving in the U.S. Navy. During World War II he was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the bombing of Dec. 7, 1941. He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service and worked for a pharmaceutical supply company for 17 years.
Mr. Crenshaw was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Hays, Kan. He was a member of the Naval Reserve and St. Peter The Fisherman Catholic Church.
His survivors include his wife, Melba Crenshaw; one son, Eric Crenshaw, Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Phyllis M. Crenshaw, Kansas City, and Tali A. Grosz, Bethlehem, Pa..; four sisters, Alice Crenshaw, Gertrude Watson and Twilla Mae Christian, all of Kansas City and Charlotte Powers, Venice, Fla., and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Services were Wednesday at Roller Funeral Home Chapel.
MARY L. DOCTOR
Mary Leake Doctor, 73, Franklin, Tenn., died Tuesday, July 15, 1997.
Her survivors include a sister, Frances L. York, Nashville, Tenn.; a stepson, Lynn Doctor, Independence; and two stepgrandsons.
Services were Friday at the Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home, Nashville.
JANET D. FARQUHAR
Janet D. "Jenny" Farquhar, 76, Independence, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Farquhar was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and had lived in this area since 1956. She was a member of the Commonwealth Club and The Brides Club. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.
Her survivors include her husband, John Faquhar, of the home; two sons, George Farquhar, Portland, Ore., and Neil L. Farquhar, Lake Lotawanna; one daughter, Donna E. Crowder, Independence; one brother, Neil Littleson, Scotland; two sisters, Mary Munro, Fulwel, England, and Elizabeth Buchanan, Glasgow, Scotland; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
