BESSIE SMITH
Bessie Smith, 85, Independence, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 26, 1913, in Maryville, Tenn. She was a member of the Enoch Hill RLDS congregation, was active in the Women`s Department, and spent her summers at Lake Doniphan helping in the kitchen as a cook. She was preceded in death by one daughter.
Her survivors include her husband of 60 years, Gordon Smith of the home; three sons, James Gordon Smith, Frankfort, Ind., Darrel Keith Smith, Odessa, and Wesley Gordon Smith, Independence; one daughter, Denise Ellen Smith, Madison, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bonnie Sharp, Maryville, Tenn.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Private burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
LORENA C. BADDER
Lorena Catherine Badder, 99, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.
Mrs. Badder was born Sept. 26, 1898, in Tell City, Ind., and had lived in Independence for more than 70 years. She was a member of the Eden Heights RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ammon Badder in 1991, a son, Ward Badder in 1996, and two granddaughters.
Her survivors include two sons, Robert G. Badder, Independence, and Charles E. Badder, Holden, Mo.; two daughters, Maxine Hattey, Bates City, and Edith Keehler, Independence; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
JULIE K. DOUGLAS
Julie K. Douglas, 38, Lee`s Summit, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Douglas was born May 27, 1959, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. She was an administrative secretary at Independence Regional Health Center for 12 years and was a member of the Celebration Community Church in Lee`s Summit.
Her survivors include her husband, Curt Douglas of the home; her mother, Joyce Driskell, and her maternal great-grandmother, Julia Carter, both of Independence; three brothers, Doug Driskell, Lee`s Summit, Darrell Driskell, Sugar Creek, and Kevin Driskell, Independence; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Truman Heartland Foundation Hospice Fund or the American Cancer Society.
WILMA F. MARSHALL
Wilma F. Marshall, 85, El Dorado Springs, Mo., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Marshall had lived for many years in the Taberville, Mo., and El Dorado Springs areas.
Her survivors include three daughters, Lela Thomas and Doris McCormick, both of El Dorado Springs, and Patty Sammon, Independence; three stepdaughters, Cecil Perry, Lowry City, Mo., Alice Larson, Osceola, Mo., and Mildred Allen, Lamar, Mo.; one stepson, Elvin Marshall, Osceola; five brothers, Donald Bouse, Clinton, Mo., Eugene Bouse and Clarence Bouse Jr., both of Tuscon, Ariz., Harold Bouse, Independence, and Cecil Bouse, Alamosa, Colo.; one sister, LaVonne Pruitt, El Dorado Springs; seven grandchildren; 19 step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Sheldon Chapel, El Dorado Springs. Burial will be in Taberville cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
RAYMOND ORTEZ
Raymond (Ortiz) Ortez, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998.
Mr. Ortez was born March 27, 1922, in LaBarca, Jalisco, Mexico, and was a longtime Independence resident. He retired from Armco Steel after 35 years of service. He was a 1941 graduate of William Chrisman High School and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Mary Ortez; a son, Ray Anthony Ortez; a daughter, Helen Ortiz; two brothers, Manuel Ortiz and Emmett "Toto" Roca; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Charter Funerals/Blue Ridge Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
ZOE PETERSON
Zoe Peterson, 89, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the Monterey Park Care Center.
Mrs. Peterson was born April 8, 1908, in St. Marys, Kan. She was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple and a former member of Mount Washington Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Peterson, and a son, Clayton Peterson.
Her survivors include two sons, Gilbert Peterson, Lee`s Summit, and Cletus Peterson, Independence; a daughter, Beverly Ammon, Waukee, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Kansas City Baptist Temple, 5460 Blue Ridge Cut-off. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.
NORMA H. SCHRAGE
Norma H. Warner Schrage, 90, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Schrage was born Oct. 19, 1907, and lived in Saginaw, Mich., before moving to Independence. She was a member of the Saginaw RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Schrage; a son, James Schrage; and two brothers, Lloyd Warner and George Warner.
Her survivors include a brother, Ervine F. Warner, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were today at the church. Burial was in Birch Run cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the church.
SYLVIA M. SUITOR
Sylvia M. Suitor, 55, Medford, Ore., formerly of this area, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Providence Medford Medical Center.
Mrs. Suitor was born July 21, 1942, in Kansas City, and lived in Glendale, Calif., before moving to Rouge Valley 26 years ago. She was a licensed practical nurse in several nursing homes and a member of CERVS and the Northwest Seasonal Workers Association. Her husband, Jerry L. Suitor, died in 1962.
Her survivors include a son, David Suitor, Jal, N.M.; a daughter, Debra Blanco, Medford; a brother, James R. McCandless, and two sisters, Sandra Baldous and Kathy Owens, all of Buckner; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services were today at the Central Valley Chapel, Central Point, Ore. Burial was in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
WILLIAM E. TONNAR
William E. Tonnar, 82, Carroll-ton, Mo., died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Mr. Tonnar was born Oct. 13, 1916, in Carrollton and was a lifelong Carrollton resident. He was the owner/operator of Tonnar Auto Salvage for more than 60 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Carrollton and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia "Betty" Dunn Tonnar on Aug. 8, 1997, and two daughters, Barbara Ann Tonnar and Rosie Murphy. His survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Pat and Elizabeth Tonnar, Carrollton, and Mike and Dorotha Tonnar, Union, Mo.; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Jo Ellen Evans, Judy and Charles Harper, Carol and Roger Stark, and Debbie and Doug Casner, all of Carrollton, Diana and Anthony Pennington, Independence, and Teresa and Ronald Casner, Norborne, Mo.; three sisters, Anna Tonnar and Dolly Lock, both of Carrollton, and Wilhemina Macalouso, New Orleans; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the church, with a prayer service at 7:15 p.m. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carrollton or the Carroll County Memorial Hospital. ADA A. SIMPSON
Ada A. Simpson, 85, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at the Blue Springs Care Center. Mrs. Simpson was born Oct. 16, 1913, in Benton County, Mo. She was an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service before retiring in 1972. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, and a past member of the Rebekah Lodge in Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Simpson on June 24, 1992, and one son, Milton Simpson on Dec. 5, 1967. Her survivors inlude two sons, Robert Simpson, Columbia, Mo., and Wayne Simpson, Lake Lotawana; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. VIRGINIA BEAL
Virginia Beal, 83, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at her home. Mrs. Beal co-owned and operated Beal's Bus Services in Blue Springs for many years. She was a member of the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. Graveside services were today at Blue Springs cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Webb-Freer Funeral Home.
PAUL RUSSELL STAFFELD
Paul Russell Staffeld, 90, Independence, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Rosewood Health Center.
He was born July 1, 1908, in Patucket, R.I. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1931. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He worked as an engineer for the Minnesota Highway Department for many years and became Deputy Commissioner of Highways. He belonged to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Association of State Highway Officials, and Phi Sigma Kappa. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served as Pastor of the Minnesota District. Survivors include his wife, Bea Staffeld, of the home; one sister, Betty Paskauskas, Stuart, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial services will held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel at the Groves.
HOYT H. BRISON
Hoyt H. Brison, 73, Independence, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Brison was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Fallsville, Ark., and had lived in Independence since 1955. He worked for the Vendo Co. for more than 22 years, and was an auto serviceman for the city of Independence until retiring in 1987. He was also the owner/operator of B&B Lawn Service. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Assembly of God Church, and was a sergeant in World War II, serving as a combat engineer in Greenland. He was a recipient of several community service awards.
His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jeanette Brison; five sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Brison, Donald and Delta Brison, David and Sherry Brison, and Denver and Addie Brison, all of Independence, and James and Janice Brison, Springfield, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Tom Girdner, Mercer, Mo.; one sister, Dorothy Atkisson, Jasper, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.
CALVIN L. COPENHAVER
Calvin Lee Copenhaver, 62, Odessa, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Copenhaver was born Feb. 26, 1936, in Odessa and was a lifelong Odessa resident. He was the owner/manager of Budget Motors in Blue Springs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Odessa, a 1954 graduate of Odessa High School, a Navy veteran, and was co-owner of the Belly-Up Racing Team, Ford Modified Stock Car.
His survivors include one daughter, Ronda Flinn, Dallas; his mother, Edith Lucille Neece Copenhaver of the home; a sister, Bettie Hiestand, Independence; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa; inurnment. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
JOHN F. BAILEY
John F. Bailey, 56, Blue Springs, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. Bailey was born July 29, 1941, in St. Louis, and lived in Festus and Crystal City in Missouri most of his life, moving to Blue Springs 17 years ago. He worked for AT&T for 27 years, retiring in 1988, and was currently employed with Sprint. He was a Navy veteran, and a member of the U.S.S. Topeka Reunion Group. He was born again as a Christian on Feb. 14, 1994, and was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir of the Plaza Heights Baptist Church, Blue Springs.
His survivors include his wife, Patricia "Pat" Bailey of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Rachel Bailey, Grain Valley; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Steven Gann, Blue Springs; five grandchildren, Ralph and Holly Gann, and Mychael, Madyson and Maryssa Bailey; a brother, Mark Bailey, Farmington, Mo.; and two sisters, Nancy Goodwin, Pevely, Mo., and Virginia "Ginny" Yates, Pacific, Mo.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Rachel House, formerly the L.I.G.H.T. House of Blue Springs.
LETA M. FIELDS
Leta Mae Fields, 84, Richmond, Mo., died Friday, July 10, 1998, at the Ray County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Fields was born July 3, 1914, in Polo, Mo., and had lived in Ray County most of her life. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Dockery Baptist Church.
Her survivors include her husband, Monroe R. Fields of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, John H. and Dovie Fields, Independence; one daughter, Donna Ann Sickle, Richmond; one brother, Donald Hyder, Farmington, N.M.; four grandchildren, Brian Sickle and Mary Ann Sickle, both of Richmond, Michael Sickle, Grain Valley, and Jonathan Fields, Independence; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. MAXINE A. HAMM
Maxine A. Hamm, 82, Independence, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Hamm was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Kansas City, Kan., and was a lifelong area resident. She was a seamstress for Williams Mill
Supply for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodruff Hamm in 1961, and a daughter, Carol M. Andrews in 1981.
Her survivors include four sons, Robert L. Hamm, Wilsall, Mont., Richard W. Hamm and Ray A. Hamm, both of Independence, and Paul W. Hamm, Kansas City; 10 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
Services were today at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial was in Highland Park cemetery.
LAVETTA M. HARRISON
Lavetta M. Harrison, 62, Lee`s Summit, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Harrison was born July 11, 1936, in Iantha, Mo., and lived in Sedalia, Mo., before moving to this area. She taught for the Sedalia School System for 25 years, and the Marlborough Magnet (elementary) School in Kansas City for 11 years. She also taught part time at Longview Community College in the evening Math Department for about eight years. She was a member of the Lee`s Summit Christian Church.
Her survivors include her husband of 30 years, James "Jim" Harrison of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Marcia Hurt, Blue Springs; two brothers, Earl White, Topeka, and Melvin White, Florida; and two grandsons, Bryan and Michael Hurt of Blue Springs.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Lee`s Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
