BERTHA B. PHELPS

Bertha B. Phelps, 88, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at The Groves.

Mrs. Phelps was born July 17, 1909, in Mayville, Mich., and had lived in Independence since 1982. She was a medical secretary for the Caro (Mich.) State Hospital before she retired. She was the council vice president of Girl Scouts of America, Mayville, and the founder of the Mayville Public Library. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Her survivors include her husband, Willard Phelps of the home; three daughters, Carol Ann Haller, New Jersey, Joanne Murphy, Kansas, and Mary Ann Evans, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Cremation. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.

IVY I. RAMBO

Ivy Isabella Rambo, 90, Liberty, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at the Ashton Care Center in Liberty.

Mrs. Rambo was born Feb. 9, 1907, in St. Joseph, Mo., and lived in Independence and Excelsior Springs, Mo., before moving to Liberty three years ago. She was a member of the Cameron (Mo.) RLDS congregation. Her husband, William Curtis Rambo, died in 1976.

Her survivors include a son, Robert Rambo, Excelsior Springs; a daughter, Donna Pederson, Lake Elmo, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were today at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

SYLVIA L. ROWLAND

Sylvia L. Rowland, 91, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at Maywood Terrace Living Center.

Mrs. Rowland was born April 27, 1906, in Lebanon, Mo., and had lived in this area for 45 years. She was a clerk at the Jones Store in downtown Kansas City for 31 years, retiring in 1978. She was member of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary June Van Horn in 1996.

Her survivors include her husband, Clarence Rowland of the home; a brother, Ellis DeGraffenreid, Calif.; a sister, Letha Coffee, Windsor, Mo.; three grandchildren, Robin Gilmore, Deborah Howard and Jackie Erickson, Kansas City; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery, Weston, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

JEANNE TREFZ

Jeanne Trefz, 73, Independence, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Trefz was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and lived in this area most of her life. She was a dental assistant for her husband, Dr. William R. Trefz, for 36 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation.

Her survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Dr. William T. Trefz, Blue Springs; a daughter, Jan Rynard, Independence; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

FLOYD J. "ACE" AZAMBER

Floyd J. "Ace" Azamber, 83, Independence, died Monday, March 30, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Azamber was born July 16, 1914, in Pittsburg, Kan., and had lived in Independence the past 15 years. He was a bus driver and retired after 35 years of service from the Kansas City ATA (Metro). He was a member of the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Azamber in 1996.

His survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Doran, Marshfield, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Stephanie House, Tennessee; three stepsons, Charles Anderson, Kansas City, Bill Anderson, Upland, Calif., and Steve Camp, Independence; a sister, Josephine Chasen, Hemet, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

BONNIE P. BROWN

Bonnie Priscilla Bean Brown, 72, died Friday, March 27, 1998, in Richland, Wash.

Mrs. Brown was born Aug. 7, 1925, in East St. Louis, Mo. She was preceded in death by two children, Kathleen Bonnie Brown and Daniel Udell Brown.

Her survivors include two sisters, Mary Jane Brown and Dawn Patricia Ware, and one brother, Justus Conrad Bean, all of Independence; and her husband, Udell Williard Brown of the home.

Cremation with burial on family grounds at a later date.

NELLIE J. HICKLE

Nellie Jeanette Simpson Hickle, 72, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at Vencor Hospital, Kansas City.

Mrs. Hickle was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was self-employed in advertizing. She was of the Catholic faith.

Her survivors include a daughter, Betty Anderson, a sister, Betty Dickhout, two granddaughters, Rachelle Smith and Stephanie Carrender, a great-grandson, Cody Bauon, and two great-granddaughters, Kayle Carrender and Kelsy Carrender, all of

Independence.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.

ESTHER ONEIDA EISFELDER HUNT

Esther Oneida Eisfelder Hunt, 78, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Hunt was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Kansas City, and had lived in the Odessa area from 1968 until returning to Independence in 1986. She graduated from the Paseo High School in 1935. She retired in 1972 from the Western Auto Warehouse after 25 years of service. She was active in the Unity Church of Independence and was president of the Kansas City Athenaeum Club. She volunteered at the Medical Center of Independence and for the Vaile Mansion. She was a member of the Wonderview Club and the ACBL Bridge Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Hunt on Sept. 21, 1939.

Her survivors include a son, James C. Hunt II, Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Janet Jones, Stewartsville, Mo.; a brother, William Callahan, Long Lane, Mo.; two sisters, Maybell Malone, Independence, Jean Hughes, Tamarac, Fla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Kansas City Athenaeum Club, 900 East Linwood Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 64109.

LUCILLE PICKARD HUNT

Lucille Pickard Hunt, 91, Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at Collierville Health and Rehabilitation, Memphis.

Mrs. Hunt was born May 14, 1906, in Whitlock, Tenn., and had lived in Independence before moving to Memphis. She had been employed by Harzfeld Department Store in Kansas City for many yars. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy V. Hunt.

Her survivors include three sons, Robert Pickard, Casey, Miss., Max Pickard, Bartlett, Tenn., and Jack Pickard, Camden, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.

CATHERINE IGOU

Catherine Igou, 59, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at Vencor Hospital.

Mrs. Igou was born March 5, 1939, in Kansas City.

Her survivors include her husband, Harland E. Igou Sr. of the home; two stepsons, Harland E. Igou Jr., Independence, and David E. Igou, Kansas City; four stepdaughters, Barbara J. Bush, Sugar Creek, Sandra Godfrey, Independence, Diana Igou, Kansas City, and Nova Sue Burgess, Moore, Okla.; a sister, Mary Frances Christafano, Independence; a brother, Salvador Fachi, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Park Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

VERNON D. KOLB

Vernon D. Kolb, 68, Ottawa, Kan., died Friday, March 27, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Kolb was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Independence, and had lived in Kansas City before moving to Ottawa in 1983. He was a 1947 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He had been building manager of the Ottawa Library since September 1991. He had previously been employed at Ottawa Municipal Auditorium as a custodian. He spent most of his life as a produce manager at A&P Grocery in Independence and Kansas City. He had also worked at Ray`s IGA in Ottawa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Carpenter Kolb.

Survivors include two sons, David Kolb, Ottawa, and Josh Kolb, Branson, Mo; a daughter, Tracy Kolb, Independence; a sister, Melba Carithers, Independence; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Services will be followed by family visitation. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Friends of the Library, in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kan. 66067.

WILLIAM D. MCPHERSON

William D. McPherson, 77, Independence, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at his home.

Mr. McPherson was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Warrensburg, Mo., and had lived most of his life in Independence. He was a 1937 graduate of the William Chrisman High School and an Army veteran of World War II. He played the organ in the Don Roth Trio for 17 years and at the U-Smile Stadium Inn for seven years. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians and the Englewood RLDS Church.

His survivors include his wife, Jeri McPherson of the home; two sons, Jamie Beryl McPherson, Lexington, Mo., and William Dean McPherson, Sugar Creek; a brother, Harry Dayton McPherson, and a sister, Roberta Palace McPherson, both of Independence; and two grandchildren, Christopher Patrick and Jennifer Michelle McPherson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be to the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association.

MARY A. PEACOCK

Mary Alice Peacock, 65, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Peacock was born March 4, 1933, in Hartford, Tenn., and had lived in North Carolina before moving to Independence 18 years ago. She had worked for 10 years at Alphapointe Association for the Blind, retiring in 1997. She was a member of the Susquehanna Assembly of God.

Her survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Marshall, Asheboro, N.C., and Cathy Williams, Greensboro, N.C.; a son, Calvin Peacock, Salisburg, N.C.; a brother, Kenny McGana, Oak Grove; and two grandsons, Charles Smith and William Estes.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

MARY PETERMAN

Mary Peterman, 92, Butler, Mo., died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler.

Mrs. Peterman was born Aug. 23, 1905, in Severance, Kan.

Her survivors include her sons, John Whitehill, Independence, and Bob Henry, Southhaven, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were Thursday at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Independence. The family suggests contributions to the church in her memory. Arrangements were under the direction of the Underwood-Steinbeck Funeral Home, Butler.

MARTHA L. RAYNES

Martha Lee Raynes, 68, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Raynes was born Feb. 7, 1930, in Oak Grove, and had lived in Independence for most of her life. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Her survivors include her husband of 47 years, Clarence L. Raynes of the home; a daughter, Nancy McBrayer, Independence; three sisters, Loetta Donnice, Kansas City, and Ethel Raynes and Charlene Hamilton, both of Independence; a brother, Robert E. Grarrett, Kansas City; and a grandson, Harvey McBrayer, Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Independence Regional Hospice.
