MARTHA J. PENNISTON
Martha Jane Penniston, 65, Buckner, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Penniston was born Sept. 11, 1932, in Kansas City, and had lived most of her life in Buckner. She graduated from Central High School and attended the School of Journalism at University of Missouri-Columbia. She was a founding member of the Catholic Church of Santa Fe, where she served as a sacristan for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Robert Penniston in 1995.
Her survivors include three sons, Robert Penniston Jr., Kansas City, Bill Penniston, Independence, and Andrew Penniston, Lee`s Summit; five daughters, Lucinda Comer, Martha Davis and Mary Penniston, all of Kansas City, Dr. Nancy Osborn, Lexington, Mo., and Anne Penniston, Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild; a brother, Rev. Robert Hagen, S.J., Trinidad, Colo.; two sisters, Jean Scholz, Eugene, Ore., and Sister Tobias Hagan, St. Louis.
Memorial mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Santa Fe Catholic Church in Buckner. Private burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Mary`s Hospice or a favorite charity.
LEO E. TUTER
Leo Edward Tuter, 79, Raytown, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center.
Mr. Tuter was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Brownington, Mo. He worked and retired as a machinist for RMF Steel. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Raytown where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and a R.A. leader.
His survivors include his wife, Mildred Tuter of the home; a son, Danny Tuter, Blue Springs; a daughter, Debra Kilby, Fresno, Calif.; a sister, Velma Price, Clinton, Mo.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Tuter, Jeff Tuter, Rob Greene, Ryan Kilby and Sara Kilby.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Raytown, 6224 Blue Ridge Blvd. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Raytown. Arrangements are under the direction of the D.W. Newcomer`s Floral Hill Chapel.
ROSA M. BUSCHHORN
Rosa May Buschhorn, 71, Independence, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Buschhorn was born Dec. 28, 1926, in Norfolk, Va., and had lived in this area for most of her life. She served as a WAC during World War II, and she was a member of VFW Post 1000. She was employed by the City of Independence for 15 years, retiring in 1987.
Her survivors include a son, Don Buschhorn, Independence; two daughters, Vickie Cordell, Gardner, Kan., and Rosanna Casy, Grain Valley; two brothers; three sisters; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lobb cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Research Institute, 3440 Hollywood Blvd., Suite 100, Hollywood, Fla., 33021.
TIMOTHY J. ANDERSON
Timothy James Anderson, 47, Independence, died Thursday, March 26, 1998.
Mr. Anderson was born July 22, 1950, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a 1968 graduate of Truman High School.
His survivors include his mother, Bonnie Anderson, Independence; two sisters, Cindy Maley, Kansas City, and Shari White, Ponca City, Okla.; a brother, David Anderson, Climax Springs, Mo.; a nephew; and two nieces.
Memorial services will be 7 tonight at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation.
JOURDAN P. APPS
Jourdan Paige Apps, infant daughter of Shawn and Roynena Apps of Independence, died Thursday, March 26, 1998.
Jourdan Paige was born Dec. 17, 1997.
Her survivors also include her grandparents, Jim and Jenny Apps, St. Louis, and Roy Bishop, Redding, Calif.; and great-grandmothers, Gwendolyn Hewes, Redding, and Lolly Apps, Adkins, Texas.
A gathering of friends and family will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at Spreaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. The family suggests contributions to the charity of choice.
KELLY O. BROWN
Kelly O. Brown, 76, Independence, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Brown was born in Ava, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area for most of his life. He had been an electrician for Ralston Purina retiring in the 1970s. He was an Air Froce Veteran of World War II and had been a member of Waldo Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife, Helen E. Brown of the home; a son, Jim Hodkins, Sibley; a daughter, Barbara Spry, Independence; a brother, John Peterman, Independence; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.

DALLAS E. LEWIS
Dallas E. Lewis, 69, Independence, died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Lewis was born March 15, 1929, in Stella, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area most of his life. He was a warehouseman for General Motors until retiring in 1985. He was a member of VFW Post 1000 and the Eagle Lodge on the Square. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
His survivors include his daughter, Vonda Lewis-Jensen, Independence; three brothers, Joe Lewis, Webb City, Mo., Denzil Lewis, Granby, Mo., and John Lewis, Stella; seven sisters, Marlene Sanders and Darlene Laughlin, both of Stella, Maxine Richards, Stark City, Mo., Pauline McMahan and Josephine Hartley, both of Tulsa, Okla.; Marjorie Willman, Fairview, Mo., and Georgia Wiseley, Little Rock, Ark.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clark Funeral Home, Granby, Mo. Burial will be in Hazel Green cemetery, Bolder City, Mo. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Clark Funeral Home, Granby.
VIVIAN H. MYERS
Vivian H. Myers, 94, Independence, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Myers was born Feb. 20, 1904, in Shreveport, La., and had lived in the Independence area since 1920. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Washington United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Society of Christian Service, Women`s Pioneer Democratic Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Myers in 1989.
Her survivors include a daughter, Sandra Rarden, and a brother, James Thomas Otts Sr., both of Independence.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from noon until service time at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.
ROGER T. SERMON
Roger T. Sermon, 79, Independence, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Rosewood Health Care.
Mr. Sermon was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He attended local schools and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1940. He completed his law degree at the University of Kansas City in 1942. While attending the MU, he was twice president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was an Army veteran and attended Officers Training School. In 1949 he established an interior design business with Mitchell Anderson, called Sermon-Anderson in the Englewood business area of Independence. He served as chairman of the 1859 Jail committee and was the first president of the Vaile Victorian Society, a member of the Independence Civic Cultural Committee, Quality of Life Commission, Friends of Art and was treasurer of the Independence Cultural Arts Coalition.
His survivors include many cousins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
LINDA PETERS WATERS
Linda Peters Waters, 43, Independence, died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Waters was born in Kansas City. She was a homemaker.
Her survivors include her mother, Ruth Simpson, Lenexa, Kan.; her father, George Peters, Kansas City; two sons, Noah Waters and Nathan Waters, both of Independence; a daughter, Kaysi Waters, Independence; and a sister, Jill Peters, Lenexa.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
KATHY "KATE" WILLIAMS
Kathy "Kate" Williams, 53, Thompson, Mo., died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Audrain Medical Center, Mexico, Mo.
Miss Williams was born July 3, 1944, in Elwood, Kan. She was a self-employed contractor, painter and paper hanger. She was a member of the Baptist Church, Elwood.
Her survivors include her mother, Frances VanBibber Williams, Independence; and two brothers, Terry L. Williams, Columbia, Mo., and Jerry A. Williams, Independence.
Cremation. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were under the direction of the Pickering Funeral Home, Mexico, Mo.
MILDRED M. CHARLTON
Mildred Maxine Charlton, 83, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Charlton was born March 31, 1915, in Kansas City, and had been a lifelong area resident. She had been a clerk with Montgomery Wards for 20 years until retiring. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Everett Cousins in 1960, and then by her second husband, Edward Christian Charlton in 1982, and a grandson, John Edward Hake in 1987.
Her survivors include a son, Ray Cousins, Washington, Mo.; a daughter, Gwen Hake, Independence; two sisters, "Buddy" Rollag, Albuquerque, N.M., and Virginia Shacklett, Englewood, Colo.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to a Memorial Fund at the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 14500 East 39th Street, Independence, Mo. 64055, or to Memorial Bibles by Gideon International.
LILLIAN E. GRUBB
Lillian E. Grubb, 74, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at the Monterey Park Nursing Center.
Mrs. Grubb was born Dec. 13, 1923, in New Franklin, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Grubb in 1975.
Her survivors include a daughter, Peggy Keithly, Independence; a son, William Grubb, Oak Grove; two brothers, Earl Beard, Raytown, and Robert Beard, Lee's Summit; a sister, Margaret Simons, Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren, Terri Stark, Jeffrey Grubb, Jodie Ritchel and Wendy Rice; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 until 8:30 tonight at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Heart of America Hospice.
RUBY N. HELLBERG
Ruby N. Hellberg, 91, Oak Grove, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Oak Grove.
Mrs. Hellberg was born Dec. 30, 1906, in Ray County, Mo., and had lived in Oak Grove for 71 years. She has been a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church for the past 51 years. She was honored as the First Lady of Oak Grove in 1990. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Lyndell J. Hellberg in 1973.
Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lana K. and David Clark, Oak Grove; a grandson, David Lyndell Clark of the home; two sisters, Pearl E. Owings, Denver, and Dorothy Craig, Windsor, Mo.; and a brother, William E. Grote Jr., Oak Grove.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Oak Grove cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.
MARY E. ROBINSON
Mary E. Robinson, 87, Blue Springs, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at her home.
She was born in Kansas City. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin H. Robinson in 1960.
Her survivors include a daughter, Cora M. Craig, Blue Springs; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be at 2 today at Mount Moriah cemetery under the direction of Muehlebach Funeral Home.
