ORPHA SIMPSON
Orpha Simpson, 82, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Simpson was born March 7, 1916, in Logap, Ark., and had lived in this area most of her life.
Her survivors include her husband, Junior R. Simpson of the home; four sons, Bill Crawford, Hermitage, Mo., Ralph Crawford, Independence, Mike Crawford, Springfield, Mo., and Jerry Simpson of the home; four daughters, Joan Wright, Marie Baughman and Brenda Powell, all of Kansas City, and Viola Middleton, Deepwater, Mo.; three brothers, Leroy Lackey, Rudolph Lackey and Delbert Lackey; two sisters, Norene Hatfield and Mabel Ridenour; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel.
ANNA S. VAJDA
Anna Smiko Vajda, 79, Sugar Creek, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Vajda was born March 15, 1919, in Ralls County, Mo., and was a lifelong resident of Sugar Creek. She was a homemaker and a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew E. Vajda in 1975.
Her survivors include two sons, Steven E. Vajda, Blue Springs, and Andrew D. Vajda, Kansas City; a sister, Mildred Allen, Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandsons, Steven S. and Andrew R. Vajda and Careen R. Read; three granddaughters, Brandi E. and Brea N. Vajda, and Trish R. Cline; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Messiah Lutheran Church.
DOROTHY D. EDGAR
Dorothy Dean Edgar, 75, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Edgar was born March 8, 1923, in Hardin, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area for most of her life. She worked for J.C. Penney for 20 years before retiring in 1988. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hardin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Johnston Edgar on Jan. 4, 1992.
Her survivors include a son, Glenn E. Edgar, Joplin, Mo.; a daughter, Sherry K. Looker, Independence; two sisters, DeAunn Dooley, Platte City, Mo., and Norma Gear, Florida; five grandchildren, Amy Joann Chapman, Jeff Ferrell, James Lee Ferrell, Kyle Andrew Konopasek and Nathan Alan Edgar; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, Mo. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens, Richmond. There will be no family visitation but friends may call from 3 to 5 today at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
RAYMOND V. FINTER
Raymond Van Buren Finter, 85, Windsor, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Truman Valley Healthcare Nursing Home.
Mr. Finter was born July 6, 1913, in Pleasant Hill, Mo. He was employed for 20 years as a security guard and truck driver for the Intercontinental Engineering and Manufacturing Co., in Pleasant Hill, before his retirement. He also worked with farm related businesses.
His survivors include his wife, Marguerite Terry Finter of the home; three daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara Ninemire, Independence, Linda Dunnam, Parkville, Mo., and Judy and Clarence Gilillespie, North Kansas City; a brother, Wesley Finter, Fredericktown, Mo.; a sister, Gladys Tatum, Rockport, Texas; an uncle, Lesle Johnson, Lowry City, Mo.; five grandchildren, J.R. Williams, Patty Morris, and Kay, Belinda and Tammy Dunnam; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor. Graveside committal services will be 3 p.m. at the Mound Grove cemetery, Sugar Creek. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
NAOMI L. GRAY
Naomi L. Gray, 84, Kansas City, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Gray had lived in Independence since 1980. She was a secretary for the US Trade School for 20 years before retiring in 1986. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Gilbert Gray in 1983.
Her survivors include a son, Gilbert Carl Gray, San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Suzanne Watters, Independence, and Patricia Sales, Liberty, Mo.; two sisters, Lolita Braun, Palm Desert, Calif., and Geraldine St. John, Lenexa, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.
ELIZABETH F. MOORE
Elizabeth F. Moore, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at Maywood Terrace Care Center.
Mrs. Moore was born April 18, 1919, in Louisiana, Mo., and had lived most of her life in Independence. She was of the Baptist Faith and had worked as a garment worker.
Her survivors include a son, Gary Lee Moore, Columbia, Mo.; four brothers, William M. Davis, Warrenton, Mo., Lawrence C. Davis, Louisiana, James S. Davis and Harry W. Davis, both of Independence; and two grandchildren.
Cremation, with burial in Louisiana. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
WILLIAM A. THOMAS
William Allen Thomas, 76, Independence, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at the Kansas University Medical Center.
Mr. Thomas was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Omaha, Neb. He worked for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4242 in Raytown.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret Thomas of the home; one son, David Thomas, St. Peters, Mo.; four daughters, Barbara Crummett, Lancaster, Calif., Pamela Sue Kuchmanich, Roseville, Mich., Debra Jeanne Crane, Ferndale, Mich., and Cynthia Murto, Berkley, Mich.; one sister, Ernestine Latimer, Calamesa, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Lee`s Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Raytown Christian Church.
ESTHER M. BATEMAN
Esther M. Bateman, 72, Buckner, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Bateman was born March 13, 1926, in Frankford, Mo., and moved to Buckner in 1982. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald L. Bateman in 1997.
Her survivors include her husband, Leon Bateman of the home; three brothers, Glen Ruby, Frankford, Lester Ruby, Holden, Mo., and Richard Ruby, Hannibal, Mo.; four sisters, Ruth Perkins, Frankford, Shirley Hamm, Louisiana, Mo., Charlotte Kerns, Curryville, Mo., and Zola Ellis, Frankford; a grandson, Bill Bateman, and a great-grandson, Dylan Bateman, both of Blue Springs.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
THELMA C. HAWKINS
Thelma Carrie Hawkins, 93, Odessa, died April 20, 1998, at the Monterey Park Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hawkins was born March 28, 1905, in Brookfield, Mo. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but recently attended the Odessa Restoration Branch Church. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and was a charter member of the Odessa Nutrition Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, George W. Hawkins on May 20, 1996.
Her survivors include a son, George Hawkins, Independence; a daughter, Norma Jean Kelly, Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Dorothy Trent, Tulsa, Okla.; grandchildren, Tom and Michael Hawkins, Beth Hankins, Jennifer Warnock, and Scott Kelly; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hawkins, John Roach, Tyler and Sara Hankins, Joel and Erin Hawkins, Colin, Katie and Michael Warnock, Sonny and Adam Kelly; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Husman-Sparks-McDowell Funeral Chapel, Odessa. Graveside services and burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel.
DOROTHY A. CAUFIELD
Dorothy Alberta Caufield, 68, Bolivar, Mo., died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Cox Hospital in Springfield, Mo.
Mrs. Caufield was born March 1, 1930, in Greensburg, Ind. She was an officer and president of the local American Legion Auxiliary and was active in the American Veterans.
Her survivors include three daughters, Margaret Ann Pernice, Independence, and Jeri Lynn Roser and Jackie Marie, both of Humansville, Mo.; one son, John Earl Caufield, Bolivar; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were May 30 at the Pitt`s Chapel in Bolivar. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery, Bolivar.
LOY W. GOSVENER
Loy Willard Gosvener, 74, Independence, died Monday, June 1, 1998.
Mr. Gosvener was born July 25, 1923, in Hindsville, Ark., and had lived in Independence for many years. He retired from Missouri Pacific Railroad after 43 years. He was a member of Glenview Baptist Church, Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Madge Gosvener of the home; a brother, Clyde Gosvener, Springdale, Ark.; a sister, Delores Oxford, Farmington, Ark.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Habberton cemetery, Habberton, Ark. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
IMOGENE SHARP
Imogene Sharp, 72, Independence, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Sharp was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Mountain Grove, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1956. She was a technician for several optical companies for many years. She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Sharp Jr. in 1988.
Her survivors include her husband, Edward Sharp of the home; one son, Keith Sharp, Independence; two daughters, Gloria Walk, Lee`s Summit, and Virginia Etzenhouser, Independence; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Federation of the Blind or the American Cancer Society.
MANDI M. ANDERSON
Mandi Michelle Anderson, 19, Lee`s Summit, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center.
Ms. Anderson was born in Kansas City. She attended Lee`s Summit North High School. She was a member of the VFW 1829 Auxiliary Junior Girls and was a member of the cancer suport group at The Richard Bloch Cancer Center.
Her survivors include her mother, Evelyn E. Anderson of the home; her father, Tom E. Anderson, Kansas City; and three braothers, James J. Anderson, Kansas City, Michael H. Anderson, Gladstone, Mo., and Jason T. Anderson of the home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Nativity of Mary Church. Burial will be in D.W. Newcomer`s Crematory, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the VFW Auxiliary Junior Girls. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
DAVID F. PITTMAN
David Frank Pittman, 64, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Pittman was born April 29, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio. He retired as the former owner of Dave`s Locksmith. He was a member of the Silver Shoe Square Dance Club. He had been involved in the Boy Scouts of American for more than 20 years.
His survivors include his wife, Marilyn Pittman of the home; four sons, Andrew J. Pittman, Kingsville, Mo., Kevin J. Pittman and fiance, Cyndie Kent, Blue Springs, David Pittman Jr., and wife, Glenda, Lee`s Summit, and Kenneth J. Pittman and wife, Jami, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Rick Ruehle, Denison, Iowa, and Marilyn and Jim Stocker, Warrensburg, Mo.; four sisters, Rowena Cox, Grandview, Parker Marquerite, Batesville, Ark., Barbara Overholts, Jacksonville, Fla., and Shirley Yockey, Orlando, Fla.; and two brothers, Malcolm Pittman, Riverdale, Ga., and Robert Pittman, Georgia.

LAUREL N. SMITH
Laurel Naomi Smith, 82, Independence, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 28, 1915, in Max, N.D., and moved to the Independence area more than 30 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Hill Cumorah Restoration Church of Jesus Christ.
Her survivors include three sons, John D. Kent, Warrensburg, Mo., Michael Kent, Silverton, Oregon, and Miles D. Clark, Independence; two daughters, Patricia Kent-Baehr, Palmer, Alaska, and Jill Hempeck, Hendrum, Minn.; three brothers, Buck Whiting, Longview, Wash., Neil Whiting, Independence, and Ralph Whiting, Cabool, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hill Cumorah Restoration Church of Jesus Christ, 4516 S. Phelps Road, Independence.
GERALDINE WYATT
Geraldine Wyatt, 91, Independence, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Care Center.
Mrs. Wyatt was born April 4, 1907, in Hope, Kan., and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was a writer and was the author of four published books. One book, "Dawn of Peace, " was about the Pre-Columbian America. The other three
books dealt with teenage youth in Native America. She had won several writers awards, one of which was from the University of Missouri Journalism Department. She was a lifelong member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had previously attended the Sterling Avenue congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy A. Wyatt in 1990.
She is survived by a daughter, Alberta Musselman, Warren, Mich.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to The Groves, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence, Mo. 64050.
