BETTY J. SMALL
Betty J. Small, 67, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Small was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She retired as a clerk for Boatmen's Bank in 1992, after working in the banking business in Independence for 22 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Ladies Oriental Shrine, Tarara Court of Kansas City, Order of Eastern Star of Independence, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000 Auxiliary and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 10.
Her survivors include her husband of 51 years, Gerald Small of the home; two daughters, Patricia A. Wells and Karen L. Walker, both of Independence; a sister, Jo Ann Daniel, Kansas City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where Ladies Oriental Shrine services will be held at 7 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Children's Shrine Hospital.
HAROLD E. DEXTER
Harold Edwin Dexter, 90, Independence, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at the Rosewood Health Center.
Mr. Dexter was born Aug. 31, 1908, in Lansing, Mich. He was an auto worker for General Motors in Lansing before his retirement, and was a member of the United Auto Workers. He was also a member of the Walnut Park and The Groves RLDS congregations.
His survivors include three daughters, Jean A. Dexter, Independence, Ethel M. Barton, Lansing, and Esther M. Volz, Minden City, Mich.; a brother, Clarence Dexter, Lansing; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in East Lawn Memory Gardens, Okemos, Mich.
Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Church; Music Arts Institute in Independene or the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
BRANDON E. TATOM
Brandon Eric Tatom, 18, Independence, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Tatom was born July 18, 1980, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1998 graduate of Raytown High School, where he excelled in track and was All-State in Cross Country. He was of the Methodist faith.
His survivors include his parents, Jack and Kathy Tatom, and a sister, Melissa Tatom, all of the home; his grandmothers, Rose Mary Lewis and Donna Durham, both of Independence, and Dee Crawford, Oak Grove; seven aunts, Sheree West, Independence, Stacy Jordon, Marshall, Mo., Sheila Osborn, Oak Grove, Cheryl Gibbs, Los Angeles, Rachelle Khan and Jackie Groves, both of Independence, and Shawn Durham, Gladstone, Mo.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the ATT Special Olympics.
IRENE M. TUCK
Irene M. Tuck, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Tuck was born Feb. 13, 1914, in Fairland, Okla., and had lived in this area for 58 years. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the Ridgewood congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Tuck.
Her survivors include three daughters, Sharon Brackenbury, Oklahoma City, Kathy Hensley, Morrison, Colo., and Beverely Fizer, Blue Springs; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
LOLA L. BLACK
Lola L. Black, 74, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at the home of her son, Danny L. Black of Independence.
Mrs. Black was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Elmira, Mo., and had lived in Independence for 46 years. She had worked in food service for the Independence School District, and in house cleaning for the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. She was a member of Birchwood Baptist Church. Her husband, Howard P. Black, died in 1988.
Her survivors include her companion, Paul Hessenflow, and two sons, James W. Black and Danny L. Black, all of Independence; two sisters, Juanita Kirby, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Betty Straub, Colorado Springs; three grandchildren, Erica, Ryan and Angela Black, all of Independence; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were today at Country Meadows Baptist Church; cremation. The family suggests contributions to an area hospice.
MARJORIE L. GARRETT
Marjorie L. Enlow Garrett, 68, Independence, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Garrett was born Dec. 22, 1929, in Dewitt, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was a member of the Tarrara Court of the Ladies Oriental Shrine Society of Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Martin Enlow in 1961, and Walter Garrett, and her sons, Steve Enlow in 1994 and Jerry Enlow in 1996.
Her survivors include three brothers, William Lentz and Wayne Lentz, both of Kansas City, and Omie Lentz, Blue Springs; three sisters, Martha Caldwell, Gainesville, Ga., and Evelyn McIntyre and Lula Jones, both of Independence; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens, Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
EMIL A. SAMBORSKI
Emil A. Samborski, 74, Oak Grove, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Samborski was born Aug. 20, 1923, in Kansas City. He was a machine operator for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 15 years, retiring in 1990. He was a Catholic, a member of the American Legion, and was instrumental in starting Little League Baseball in Oak Grove. His wife, Alice Samborski, died in 1977.
His survivors include two sons, Emil Samborski, Oak Grove, and Joe Samborski, Bates City; three daughters, Emily Jones, Bates City, and Rita Dyke and Eva Dickey, both of Lone Jack; two brothers, John Samborski, Kearney, Mo., and Henry Samborski, Lawson, Mo.; four sisters, Marie Kosorog, Muncie, Kan., Martha Burton and Johanna Kern, both of Kearney, and Anna L. Jones, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Sni Mills cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
RALPH E. WILLIAMS
Ralph Edward Williams, 67, Raytown, died Monday, April 13, 1998,
at the Edgewood Manor Care Center.
Mr. Williams was born Dec. 31, 1930, in East Lynn, Mo. He worked for the General Motors Corp. and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a deacon, chairman of the trustees, and assistant leader of the Awana Club at Southview Baptist Church, Raytown, where he was a member.
His survivors include his wife, Jacqueline M. Williams of the home; two sons, David J. Williams, Blue Springs, and Ralph Edward Williams Jr., Grandview; a daughter, Cheri L. Ring, Edwards, Mo.; a brother, Eugene Williams, Independence; and eight grandchildren, Valerie and Aaron Goodman, Rachel Kristopher and Ralph E. Williams III, and Allison, Susan and David J. Williams Jr.
Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Awana Club at the church.
MICHAEL L. COEN
Michael Lee Coen, 39, Blue Springs, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Coen was born May 30, 1958, in Lexington, Mo. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. He worked 17 years at Lake City, where he was an operations technician.
His survivors include his wife, Mia Coen; a stepdaughter, Randilyn Coen; and twin sons, Robert and Adam, all of the home; his mother, Millie, and his brother, John Stephen, both of Lexington.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church with a visitation following at the church. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Hospice, 201 R.D. Mize Road, Blue Springs, Mo. 64014. The body was donated to the University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City.
GARY L. COMSTOCK
Gary L. Comstock, 59, Independence, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Park Lane Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Comstock was born Jan. 8, 1939, in Versailles, Mo. He retired from General Motors and was a member of the UAW Local 93. He later worked at Builders Square in Kansas City. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Ella Mae Comstock of the home; two sons, Earnest Hibdon, Oak Grove, and Gary Comstock, Gladstone, Mo.; two daughters, Teenia Small, Independence, and Paula Gregston, Blue Springs; two brothers, Charley Comstock, Versailles, and Johnny Comstock, Benton, Tenn.; three sisters, Sue Riley, Mayfield, Ky., Kathy Johnson, Gower, Mo., and Denise Bowers, Versailles; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles. Burial will be in the Versailles cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home.
MICHAEL A. PISTILLO
Michael A. Pistillo, 81, Blue Springs, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Pistillo was born July 7, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a production inspector with Fairbanks Morse for 29 years, retiring in 1981. He served for 25 years as president of United Steel Workers of America, Union Local 4991. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Kathryn P. Pistillo of the home; two stepdaughters, Barbara Schneider, Blue Springs, and Judy Barr, Casper, Wyo.; two granddaughters, Chris Van Camp, Lee`s Summit, and Pam Marquez, Blue Springs; a grandson, Greg Barr, Casper; three great-grandsons, Taylor Schneider, and Joshua and Justin Van Camp; two sisters, Mary Gaskill, Cleveland, Ohio, and Sue Licursi, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Frank Pistillo, New York, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Entombment was in Tower of Faith Mausoleum at Floral Hills cemetery.
ROBERT D. WREN
Robert D. Wren, 70, Independence, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Wren was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a plumber and a member of the Plumbers Union Local 8. He was ordained a deacon on Oct. 14, 1984, for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Barbara A. Wren of the home; two daughters, Gaye Garcia and Joi Tittle, both of Independence; a son, Brett Wren, Grain Valley; a brother, Thomas Wren, Wichita, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
Cremation. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. May 3 at the Grain Valley RLDS Church, corner of Buckner-Tarsney and Pink Hill roads. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs Hospice or to the church.
JAMES H. ROBBINS JR.
James H. Robbins Jr., D.P.M., 55, Independence, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998.
Dr. Robbins was born April 8, 1943, in Alton, Ill., and moved to Independence in 1967. He graduated from the Illinois College of Podiatry in Chicago in 1967, and practiced podiatry after moving to Independence. He became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1965, and had served as an elder since 1975. He had attended the Parkview RLDS congregation in Blue Springs since 1984.
His survivors include his wife, Lora Robbins, and one son, Matthew D. Robbins, both of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law, Tamela J. Smith, Independence, and Atalie M. and Daniel G. Brown, Blue Springs; two brothers, Jay L. Robbins, Roxana, Ill., and Robert C. Wohlert, Kansas City; four sisters, Mary Ruyle, Alton, V. Sue Farache and Jami E. Headrick, both of St. Louis, and Mary Kay Dunham, Godfrey, Ill.; and two granddaughters, Ashley Marie and Sydney Christine Brown of Blue Springs.
Cremation. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, 801 S. 19th St., Blue Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Truman Heartland Community Foundation (Hospice Fund), 300 N. Osage, Independence, Mo. 64050, or to the assistance fund at the church.
WILLIAM F. SMITH
William F. Smith, 60, Kansas City, died Wednesday, May 21, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 14, 1937, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a pipefitter for General Motors. He had been a member of the Calvary Sounds Church since 1974, where he served as elder.
His survivors include his wife, Millie N. Smith of the home; two sons, Terry Michael Smith, Independence, and Shane Lee Maxwell, DeSoto, Kan.; a sister, Pearl Ann Pyclor, Lee`s Summit; two brothers, LeRoy Smith, Lee`s Summit, and Paul Smith, Smithville, Mo.; and four granddaughters, Jessica Smith, Kayla Smith, Shania Smith and Angel Smith.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
JAMES M. WATKINS
James Monroe Watkins, 83, Odessa, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Watkins was born June 8, 1914, in Decatur, Ala., and lived in Osceola, Ark., from 1917 until moving to Odessa in 1956. He was a custodian for the Higginsville State Rehabilitation Center in Higginsville, Mo., from 1975 until his retirement in 1983. Earlier he was a custodian for the Odessa Junior and Senior high schools, worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, was a construction laborer for Local 664 in Kansas City, and worked for Jungerman Farms in Mayview, Mo. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church, and had been a deacon since 1957. His wife, Ella Gertrude Mosley Watkins, died Aug. 6, 1996.
His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Frances Watkins, Odessa; one sister, Lucille Richmond, Harvey, Ill.; two granddaughters, Shea Watkins Williams and Salora Watkins of Odessa; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Odessa cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa.
SSGT. WILLIAM P. MANNERING, RETIRED
SSgt. William Paul Mannering, retired, 65, Independence, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Research Hospital, Kansas City.
He was born June 22, 1932, in St. Clair County, Mo., and had lived in Independence before and after serving in the military. He attended elementary and high school in Independence. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, during the Vietnam and Korean era. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for 13 years in the transportation department of the Post Office in Kansas City, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21. He was a member of the Gudgell Park RLDS church.
His survivors include his wife, Ferris Mannering of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Cindy and Jeff Woods, and Brenda Mannering, all of Independence; two stepdaughters and son-in-law, Melaney and Roger Smith, and Heather Lewis, all of Minneapolis, Minn.; five brothers, Donald Mannering, Rolla, Mo., Wayne Mannering, Centerview, Mo., Ray Mannering and Guy Mannering, both of Independence, and Bob Mannering, Warrensburg, Mo.; a sister, Ruth Hanson, Marietta, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Sherry and Jeff Woods, Michael Mannering and Joey Andreas.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
