ANTON 'TONY' J. ENGELMAN
Anton 'Tony' J. Engelman, 85, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Friday, April 16, 1999, at St. Mary's Manor, Blue Springs.
Mr. Engelman was born May 22, 1913, in St. Louis, Mo., and had lived most of his life in Independence. He was an inspector for Ford Motor Co., and retired in 1978 with more than 33 years of service. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union and Bethel Southern Baptist Church of Pittsburg, Mo.
His survivors include two daughters, Judy Daniels, Independence, and Janet Hall, Bellevue, Neb.; three stepdaughters, Delores Haden, Independence, Shirley Hinkle, Blue Springs, and Janice Scruggs, Raytown; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were today at Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the Bethel Southern Baptist Church, P.O. Box 52, Pittsburg, Mo. 65724. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
NOEL H. HILL
Noel H. Hill, 84, Independence, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Independence Manor Care Center.
Mr. Hill was born Nov. 7, 1914, in Lebanon, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City area all of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked for the Railroad Express Agency before retiring and was a member of its retiree club. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Raytown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Enolia V. Hill in 1991.
His survivors include four brothers, Clayton Hill and Wallace Hill, both of Lebanon, Emil Hill and Marvin Hill, both of Centralia, Ill.; a great-niece, Tammy Clark, Independence; and two great-greatnieces, Kendra and Kasey and several other nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Park Lawn Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
GRACE L. MAINARD
Grace Lee Mainard, 88, Oak Grove, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Crescent Health Care of Oak Grove.
Mrs. Mainard was born Feb. 12, 1911, in Urich, Mo., and had been a long-time resident of Oak Grove. She had served as the City Collector in the 1960s and 1970s. She was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church. She had always been involved in school, civic and church activities. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Chester A. Mainard on April 10, 1980.
Her survivors include a daughter, Joan Williams, Oak Grove; four sons, Chester L. Mainard, Lampe, Mo., Gary Mainard, Blue Springs, Kenneth Mainard, Oak Grove, and Douglas Mainard, Marshfield, Mo.; four sisters, Hoda Graig, Littleton, Colo., Dorothy Johnson, Springfield, Mo., Mabel Cummins, Oak Grove, and Faye Snow, Richland, Texas; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove, where the funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Oak Grove cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Oak Grove Christian Church.
JASON R. CLINE
Jason Ray Cline, 42, Wellington, Mo., died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at the Four Seasons Living Center in Sedalia, Mo.
Mr. Cline was born Oct. 13, 1955, in Kansas City. He was a self-employed auto body and frame repairman. He was a 1974 graduate of Oak Grove High School and attended Linn Technical College for two years.
His survivors include his wife, Janene Cline, two daughters, Jessica Cline and Jaclyn Cline, and one son, Jason M. Cline II, all of the home; and three sisters, Dixie Lombardo, Phoenix, Ariz., Mary Ann Westcott, Lee`s Summit, and Cathy Frieze, Oak Grove.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Sni Mills cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions are suggested to the Jason Cline family, in care of Lafayette County Bank, Wellington, Mo. 64097.
WAUNETTA P. WALTERS
Waunetta P. Walters of Independence, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at Kansas University Medical Center.
Mrs. Walters was born in Butler, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1946. She was a member of the Independence First Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Nikki Garrett.
Her survivors include her husband, Ronald Walters of the home; a son, Arthur Garrett, and three daughters, Edith King, Delma "DeeDee" Pritchett and Verna Usery, all of Independence; a sister, Helen Walker, Colorado Springs, Col.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.
CARRELL V. AREY
Carrell Viola Arey, 90, Blue Springs, formerly of Bates City, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Arey was born March 22, 1908. She was a graduate of the Oak Grove High School and had earned a bachelor`s degree in education from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. She taught school in Sulfur Springs, Mo., for two years; Hillsboro, Mo., for two years; Oak Grove for 16 years; Bates City School for one year; Doty School in rural Bates City for two years and one year in Latour, Mo. She lived on a farm in Bates City for 42 years before moving to Oak Grove in November 1983. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bates City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Royce Arey Sr., on March 6, 1984, and a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann in 1959.
Her survivors include a son, Royce Arey, and a daughter, Nina Burnup, both of Independence; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Husman-Sparks-McDowell Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Concord cemetery, southeast of Bates City. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church of Bates City.
GARNETT C. BAILEY
Garnett Colleen Mestdagh Bailey, 85, Raytown, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Bailey was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Bethany, Mo. She was a seamstress and supervisor for 17 years for the Gay Gibson Garment Factory, retiring in 1975. She was a member of the Southview Baptist Church and the XYZ Sewing Circle. She volunteered her time and talent to the church, the VA Hospital and to many others. She was a member of the Garden Club in Nevada, Mo. She was preceded in death by her first husband, August Mestdaugh, her second husband, Elmer Bailey, and a son, Russell Mestdagh.
Her survivors include a sister, Jewell McClain, San Antonio, Texas; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Kenneth Rogers, Raytown, Martha and Jim Gaulden, Independence, and Myrna Fraise, Kansas City; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.
IRENE E. HOLT
Irene E. Holt, 66, Pleasant Hill, Mo., died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Lee`s Summit Hospital.
Mrs. Holt was born May 19, 1932, in Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Henry Holt.
Her survivors include two sons, James "Hank" Holt, Independence, and Christopher Poe, Tennessee; two daughters, Mary Kagarice, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Georgia Durgan, Pleasant Valley, Mo.; three brothers, William Frey, Kansas City, Carl Frey, Alabama, and Jerry Frey, Kansas City; a sister, Mamie Jean Asby, North Kansas City; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Charter Funerals/Blue Ridge Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 tonight at the chapel.
DOROTHY O. LIVINGSTON
Dorothy O. Livingston, 77, Independence, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998.
Mrs. Livingston was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Atlanta, and lived in Atlanta before moving to Independence three years ago.
Her survivors include a daughter, Faye Reid, and a son, L.P. Massey, both of Independence; a sister, Violet Crowder, Smyrna, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Howard Reid and Rhonda Massey, both of Independence.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation.
JUNE TURNER
June Anderson Turner, 70, Independence, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.
Mrs. Turner was born in Melbourne, Australia, came to the United States in her early 20s, and became a citizen in 1959. She was employed by Nations Bank of Kansas City. She formerly worked in the bakery business in Kansas City for more than 25 years. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Gail Anderson in 1965.
Her survivors include her husband, Alvin Turner, Independence; a son, Gregory Anderson, Liberty, Mo.; a daughter, Brenda Anderson Marks, Parkville, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Dusty Clemons, Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Dorothy Rehel, Queensland, Australia, and Brenda La Praik, New South Wales, Australia; and three grandchildren, Benjamin, Stephanie and Jennifer Marks.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Terrace Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Children`s Mercy Hospital Burn Unit or the KU Medical Center Burn Unit.
CARL A. WORTHAM
Carl Allen Wortham, 84, Kansas City, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Wortham was born in Zion, Ill., and had lived in Eden, N.C., before moving to the Independence area in 1989. He had been a mechanical engineer with Fieldcrest Cannon Mills retiring in 1978. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, where he had been a choir director, church school director and church school teacher. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl Wortham in 1989.
His survivors include his wife, Marjorie Wortham of the home; a son, Brad Wortham, Gladstone, Mo.; two daughters, Marilyn "Lynne" Trivett, Stoneville, N.C., and Karen Coleman, Independence; two sisters, Alma Kolbrick, Waukegan, Ill., and Fern Baker, Zion, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Ridgeview cemetery, Eden, N.C. Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs.
LESTER J. JOHNSON
Lester J. Johnson, 88, Independence, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at Liberty (Mo.) Hospital.
Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 7, 1910, in Oak Grove, and had lived most of his life in Independence. He had been a machinist for Puritan Bennett for 20 years, retiring in 1979. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Teamsters Local 541. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Johnson, in 1999.
His survivors include two sisters, Evelyn Shelby, Seattle, Wash., and Dorothy Work, Payallup, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were today at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the First Presbyterian Church.
CHARLES E. CLINE JR.
Charles E. "Chuck" Cline Jr., 39, Lee`s Summit, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Cline was born Dec. 10, 1958, in Harrisonville, Mo. He was employed at J.D. Reece Realtors. He was active in the Lee`s Summit Community Christian Church and Oakwood Baptist Church. He was a member of the Promise Keepers.
His survivors include his wife, Cindy, and children, Charles, Teri and Keely, all of the home; his parents, Leo and Dee Cline-Stimpert, Lone Jack, Mo., and Chuck and Rose Cline, Sunrise Beach, Mo.; four sisters, Jessica Payne, Tanya Watkins, Renee Roberts and Jana Cooper; and a brother, Gregg Carter.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Plaza Heights Baptist Church in Blue Springs. Burial will be in Lee`s Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the Langsford Funeral Home in Lee`s Summit. CLARENCE ELLIS
Clarence Ellis, 73, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Ellis was born March 24, 1925. He was a retired restaurant owner. He was a World War II Army veteran and a Baptist by faith. He was also a certified tool and dye technician.
His survivors include two sons, Clarence Ellis Jr., Polk City, Iowa, and Oran Ellis, DesMoines, Iowa; a daughter, Judy Perry, Odessa; two brothers, Lawrence and Lee Ellis; four sisters, Bernice Brand, Millie Chavez, Letha Cobb and Martha Sartain; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in the Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
HADLEY A. GROENEMAN
Hadley August Groeneman, 89, Independence, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Groeneman was born Feb. 25, 1909, in Augusta, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1941. He was retired from the Gas Service Co., and was a member of the Walnut Park RLDS congregation. His wife, Alice Groeneman, died in 1982.
His survivors include one daughter, Annette Groeneman, Independence; and one sister, Grace Marie Kelley, Malden, Mo.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, Holden, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
TWYLA L. INGRAM
Twyla L. Roney Ingram, 86, Raytown, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at the Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown.
Mrs. Ingram had lived in the Raytown, Independence and Kansas City areas most of her life. She and her husband, Edwin B. Ingram, owned and operated a drug store at 12th and Prospect for 26 years. They were also partners in the Lewil Pharmacy in Raytown. Her father and grandfather were the founders of Standard State Bank. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the P.O.A., and a member of the Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church. Her husband, died in 1983.
Her survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin B. Ingram Jr. and Sally Ingram, Raytown, and Kevin R. and Cheri Ingram, Lee`s Summit; and three grandsons, Gregory, Timothy and Jason Ingram.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church or the Parkinson`s Foundation.
