JIMMY D. COLLIER
Jimmy "J.C." D. Collier, 58, Independence, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at his home.
Mr.Collier was born Nov. 5, 1939. He was a business owner in Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Patricia Collier, Brookfield, Mo.; two sons, Jimmy Collier Jr., and Samuel Collier Jr.; two daughters, Michelle Spencer and Angela Collier; and two grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
FLOYD HASKELL JR.
Floyd Haskell Jr., 65, Drexel, Mo., died Friday, April 11, 1998, at the Veteran`s Adminsitration Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. Floyd was born in Clinton, Mo, and lived in the Kansas City area most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He followed the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Haskell, White House, Tenn.; three sons Greg Haskell, Independence, Jeffery W. Haskell, Drexel, and Steven K. Haskell, North Kansas City; a daughter, Kela S. McLaughlin, Blue Springs; mother Mamie R. Haskell, Independence; brother Dan Haskell, Blue Springs; sister Doris J. Spainhower, Bolivar, Mo.; two stepchildren, Chris Tuthill and Samantha Tuthill; seven grandsons and two step-grandsons.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m Tuesday at Shawnee Mound Cumberland presbyterian Church, Shawnee Mound, Mo. Interment will be in the Shawnee Mound cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at D. W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel.
GLADYS LYNCH KELLY
Gladys Lynch Kelly, 100, Kansas City, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in the Kingswood Health Center, Kansas City.
She was born January 7, 1898, in Independence, and was a life-long resident of the area.
Mrs. Kelly was a homemaker and a past president of the Sugar Creek PTA. She served as a house mother for Scholarship Women at the University of Kansas, and worked in Dr. Edward Holton`s Indepedence office for 15 years. She was a member of the St. Ann
Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, longtime Standard Oil refinery employee and former Sugar Creek Mayor John W. Kelly Jr., in 1950, and by two grandsons, Michael Kelly Morgan and Malachy Eric Morgan.
She is survived by her daughters, Glad Kaletta, Blythville, Ark., and Fran Nast, Kansas City; several grandchildren, Terry Morgan, Kim Morgan, John Morgan, Peter Morgan, Mimi Pettegrew, Toni Nast, Ronay Nast, Jan Nast, Barb Hickey, Angela Merrifield; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the St. Ann Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. A rosary service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
JEWELL LAFFOON
Jewell Poole England Laffoon, 75, Independence, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Laffoon was born in Windyville, Mo., and lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was co-owner of Tri-Star Reality, Springfield, Mo., for many years. She was also a real estate agent for several firms in the Independence area. She retired in 1984.
A Baptist, Mrs. Laffoon was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray England, in 1976, and by her second husband Vernon Laffoon, in 1994.
She is survived by two sons, John England, Blue Springs, and Jerry England, Parkville, Mo.; a stepson Marvin Laffoon, Salzburg, Austria; step daughters Linda Jones and Nancy Lamanno, both of Lee`s Summit; a sister Margaret Sturdevant, Fremon, Calif.; a foster brother Harley Thompson, Lebanon, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Monday in the Greenlawn cemetery, Springfield, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family recommends memorial contributions to the donor`s charity of choice.
MILDRED "MICKY" PORTER
Mildred "Micky" Porter, 77, Independence, died Friday, April 10, 1998, in the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Porter was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Wannamingo, Minn. She attended Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School, graduating in 1939. She had lived in the Independence area for eight years.
Mrs. Porter was executive secretary at EmKay Development Co., Newport Beach, Calif., from which she retired in 1988. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.
Her survivors include her daughter, Edie Moore, Blue Springs; a sister Caroline Williams, East Lansing, Mich; several grandchildren, Robert Moore of Independence, Kathrine McKinsey of Blue Springs, Megan and Kayla Reardon and Cole Moore.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the Christ United Methodist Church, Independence. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Forrest Lawn cemetery, Cypress, Calif.
The family suggests contributions to the University of Southern California Norris Cancer Institute.
All arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
DONNA M. HANEY
Donna M. Haney, 62, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at Kansas University Medical Center.
Mrs. Haney was born May 19, 1938, in Independence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Good Shepherd Christian Church.
Her survivors include her husband, Joe Haney, and a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jody Haney, all of Blue Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jeff Owens, Liberty, Mo.; her mother, Tressie Branham, Blue Springs; and five grandchildren, Bradley and Tyler Owens, Liberty, and Robby, Caitlin and MacKenna Haney, Blue Springs.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the church.
RUBY D. PHILLIPS
Ruby D. Phillips, 96, Creighton, Mo., died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at the Cass County Medical Center, Harrisonville, Mo.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Grain Valley. She was a sales clerk in a women`s clothing store before she retired. She was a member of Unity Village, Order of the Eastern Star and the Garden Club of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Leroy Phillips in 1967, and two grandchildren.
Her survivors include three daughters, Evalyn D. Johnston, Independence, Mary Eleanor Briggs, Blue Springs, and Velma June McMillen of the home; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
DORIS H. SHORE
Doris H. Shore, 79, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at Research Belton Hospital.
Mrs. Shore was born May 29, 1918, in Kansas City, and lived in Oak Grove for the past 30 years before moving to Beautiful Savior Nursing Home in Belton one month ago. She was a clerk and cashier for the Milgram food stores for 29 years, retiring in the mid-1960s. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, Christian Clowns and American Legion Post 379 Ladies Auxiliary.
Her survivors include a daughter, Loueta H. Cummins, Lee`s Summit; a sister, Jean Miller, Grain Valley; and one granddaughter, Janna Denning, Shelton, Wash.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery, north of Grain Valley. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel, where the Ladies Auxiliary will present their ceremony at 1:30 p.m.
MICHAEL L. BATTLES
Michael Lewis Battles, 66, Independence, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Battles was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Sedalia, Mo. He retired from the Department of Labor (OSHA) in 1994. He was an Air Force veteran, and a 1957 graduate of Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg.
His survivors include his wife of 39 years, Elizabeth A. Opel-Battles of the home; three sons, Kurt Battles and Jon Battles, both of Independence, and Scott Battles, Liberty, Mo.; two daughters, Pam Bouallegue and Jennifer Whitworth, both of Independence; two sisters, Kathy Assouad, Fenton, Mo., and Beth Povenmire, Independence; and 11 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the New Salem Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the Trinity Presbyterian Church of Independence or the Independence Hospice.
LENORA E. BEEBE
Lenora E. Moore Beebe, 87, Independence, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Beebe was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Independence, and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a beautician at Sudora`s Salon in Independence. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and attended the Atherton Missionary Branch. She taught the Book of Mormon to children at the Atherton RLDS Church, and grew and provided floral arrangements for the church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Beebe.
Her survivors include a sister, Mary Moore of the home; two brothers, Frederick J. Moore Sr., Buckner, and Charles B. Moore, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
VIRGIL C. MILLER
Virgil C. Miller, 80, Marshall, Mo., died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at The Living Center in Marshall.
Mr. Miller was born Feb. 25, 1918, in Hickory County, Mo., and was a lifelong Saline County, Mo., resident. He was a retired farmer and dog breeder. He was a 4-H leader for 30 years and a member of the Saline County Fair Association. He was a member of the Smith Chapel Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees and was Sunday school superintendent.
His survivors include his wife, Vernona Aulgur Miller of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Bob Doty, Nelson, Mo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Brenda Miller, Marshall; two sisters, Thelma Cochran and Mary Margaret Odom, both of Kansas City; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, Marshall. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery. Friends may call tonight at the Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home, Marshall, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church or the American Diabetes Association.
PATRICIA PARHAM
Patricia Harcourt Parham, 67, Greenville, S.C., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, June 6, 1998.
Mrs. Parham grew up in Independence and was a 1948 graduate of William Chrisman High School. Her husband, Jim Parham, died in 1991. She was a member of the Aldersgate Methodist Church.
Her survivors include three sons, James E. Parham and Terry H. Parham, both of Columbia, S.C., and Michael Parham, Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Margaret Harcourt Dethlefsen, Alameda, Calif., and Kathleen Harcourt Hulett, Independence; and six grandchildren.
Services and burial were in Greenville.
FRANCIS V. PRESLER II
Francis V. Presler II, 68, Independence, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Presler was born July 28, 1929, in Washington City, Colo. He was a chemical engineer for Burns & McDonnell, and an Army veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Viola A. Velt Presler of the home; four sons, Francis V. Presler III and Rexford L. Presler, both of Independence, Aaron L. Presler, Lake Lotawana, and Marcus L. Presler, Mission, Kan.; three daughters, Rebekah C. Troyer, Fort Collins, Colo., Wendy C. Presler, North Augusta, S.C., and Jennifer A. Mino, Overland Park, Kan.; three sisters, Shirley Wykoff, Phoenix, Ariz., and Ruth Mehring of Ft. Morgan, Colo. and Margery Boyer of Fort Collins; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ _ Restoration Branch, 16101 Salisbury Road; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the African Restoration Ministries (ARM), 15407 E. 54th St., Kansas City, Mo. 64136.
CATHARINE WOODWARD
Catharine Wirt Woodward, 97, Holiday Island, Ark., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at a nursing home in Eureka Springs, Ark.
Mrs. Woodward was born Aug. 22, 1900, in Parsons, Kan., and had lived in Parsons, Pensacola, Fla., and Independence before moving to Holiday Island nine years ago. She was a retired florist. She was a graduate of Baker University and the University of Kansas. She was a member of the PEO, Eastern Star, Holiday Island Association of the Arts and the Eureka Springs Garden Club, among others. Her husband, F.S. Woodward, died in 1977.
Her survivors include a son, W.W. Woodward, Holiday Island; a daughter, Mary Catharine Woodward, Madison, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. June 20 at the Holiday Island Clubhouse. Burial will be 1 p.m. June 21 at Memorial Lawn cemetery, Parsons. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her name to the building fund of the Community Church of Holiday Island or the Wesley Methodist Church of Parsons.
