MARIE NEILL
Marie Neill, 64, Strasburg, Mo., died Thursday, April 9, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Neill was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Appleton City, Mo., and had lived in Rich Hill, Mo., Butler, Mo., Pittsburg, Kan., Independence, Kan., Girard, Kan., and Pleasant HIll, Mo., before moving to Strasburg in 1972. While living in Pittsburg, she was employed by the First State Bank of Pittsburg for about 10 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Blue Springs Restoration Branch of Blue Springs.
Her survivors include her husband, Jim Neill of the home; two daughters, Janet Neill, Blue Springs, and Susan Mansfield, Lee`s Summit; a sister; and two grandchildren, Austin Mansfield and Krista Mansfield.
Services were April 13 at the Church of Jesus Christ Blue Springs Restoration Branch of Blue Springs. Burial was in Strasburg cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wallace Funeral home, Pleasant Hill, Mo.
CHAD L. SCHLAG
Chad Lee Schlag, 30, Independence, died Thursday, April 16, 1998.
Mr. Schlag was born May 27, 1967, in Kansas City. He worked as a pourer for Aristocrat Marble Company. He was a Baptist.
His survivors include one sister, Anita Hernandez, Independence, and his grandmother, Alberta Phillips, Osceola, Mo., and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at Brown Funeral Home in Buckner. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery in Buckner. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
DAVID J. SCHORNHORST
David J. Schornhorst, 59, Independence, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Maywood Terrace Living Center in Independence.
Mr. Schornhorst was born May 29, 1938, in Kansas City. He was retired from Jerry Bailey`s Moving and Storage. He also worked for the Salvation Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Schornhorst.
His survivors include one son, Albert Schornhorst Lee, Cameron, Mo.; three daughters, Stephanie Friend, Kansas City; Lorrie Kay Allen, Warsaw, and Hazel Schornhorts, Independence; eight brothers, Richard Schornhorst, George Schornhorst, Jessie Schornhorst, Mike Schornhorst, and Wesley Schornhorst, all of Independence; Jimmy Schornhorst, Florida, Ronald Schornhorst, Kansas City, Kan., and Frank Schornhorst, Corder, Mo.; three sisters, Betty Marshall, Stoutland, Mo., and Shirley Rogers and Christine Ward, both of Independence; and 14 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Floral Hills cemetery in Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.
DOROTHY H. SMITH
Dorothy Hoynak Smith, 87, Independence, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Smith was born March 8, 1911, in Punxsutawney, Pa., and lived in the Independence area for the past 18 years. She was a secretary for the Comptroller of the Currency for the United States Government in Washington, D.C., before retiring in the mid-1970s. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Her survivors include her husband, Roy Smith, of the home.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. She will be cremated. The family suggests contributions be made to the RLDS Stone Church in Independence.
DONALD A. SULLIVAN
Donald A. Sullivan, 83, former postmaster of Corso, Mo., and a farmer, died April 17 at his Troy, Mo., home.
Mr. Sullivan was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, a former member of the Silex School Board and a founder of the Silex Khoury League. He managed Khoury League teams for many years.
He is survivied by his wife, Cora, of the home; three daughters, Toni Thornton, Independence, Elsie Cronen, Bellflower, Mo., and Susan Schopp, St. Charles, Mo.; three sons, Jerry Sullivan, Farmington, Mo., Pat Sullivan, St. Charles, Mo., and Ron Teare, St. Peters, Mo.; two brothers, John L. Sullivan and Tim Sullivan, Silex, Mo.; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be said Saturday, April 25, at 10 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Millwood, Mo., followed by a reception. KENNETH D. TOMPKINS
Kenneth D. Tompkins, 71, Raytown, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Mr. Tompkins was born Dec. 28, 1926, in Toronto, Kan. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked for Rival Manufacturing for 39 years and at Bendix-Allied Signal for 16 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Salvation Army, Blue Valley Corps, the Raytown Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Ararat Temple. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie P. Tompkins, in 1992.
His survivors include two sons, Kenneth D. Tompkins, II, Independence, and Keith D. Tompkins, Blue Springs; two daughters, Janet J. Harrod, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Rhonda K. Wessley, Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Roy Tompkins, Protem, Mo., and Ronald D. Tompkins, Ft. Smith, Ark.; one sister, Marjorie J. Cox, Rosehill, Kan., his mother, Marjorie F. Tompkins, Rosehill, Kan.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Blue Valley Corps of the Salvation Army, 6618 Truman Road, Kansas City. Burial will follow in Green Lawn cemetery. MAMIE A. UNDERWOOD-ROACH
Mamie A. Underwood-Roach, 91, Blue Springs, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at her home
Mrs. Underwood-Roach was born June 18, 1906, in Oak Grove. She worked for the housekeeping department for Truman Medical Center-East. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Blue Springs, and the First Christian Church of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jesse P. Underwood, and her second husband, Vernon Roach.
Her survivors include one son, Leo Fred Underwood, Belton, Mo.; one daughter, Jesse Jean Weddle, Lexington, Mo.; one sister, Gladys Dunn, Independence; six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Rebekah Lodge or to the church.
GLADYS HARRIS
Gladys Harakas Harris, 78, Independence, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Harris was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Springfield, Mo. She was the manager of Turner Music Store in Independence for many years. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Independence, where she was active in the church choir. She was also a member of the Independence Young Matrons, and past president of the PTA in Independence. She was a 1936 graduate of Central High School.
Her survivors include her husband of 58 years, Paul E. Harris of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Tom Jennings, Lawrence, Kan.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Paul M. "Mitch" and Gloria Harris, and Mark J. Harris, all of Independence; three sisters, Sophia Makris, Houston, and Elena Lascuola and Kay Harakas, both of Kansas City; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where Trisarion services will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Parkinson`s Support Center, 7808 Foster, Overland Park, Kan. 66204.
HAZEL McKINNEY
Hazel McKinney, 71, Lee`s Summit, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at the Lee`s Summit Hospital.
Mrs. McKinney was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Koshkonong, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles McKinney in 1983.
Her survivors include two sons, Chuck McKinney, Tucson, Ariz., and Mark McKinney, Lakeside, Ore.; a daughter, Jenny Weiss, Lee`s Summit; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

MARY M. HELM
Mary Maria Helm, 90, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Helm was born May 24, 1908, in Bevier, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman M. Helm, and three children, John W. Helm, Leroy E. Helm and Vera D. Grider.
Her survivors include three sons, John L. Helm, Kansas City, Thomas A. Helm, Smithville, Mo., and Don L. Helm, Independence; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Wright, Chula Vista, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
HERBERT W. McRAE
Herbert Wendell McRae, 70, Blue Springs, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. McRae was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Amorita, Okla. He was a veteran. He was a founding cub master of Cub Scout Pack 455 Kellogg School in Wichita, Kan. He was a member of the Blue Springs Christian Church.
His survivors include his wife, Jacqueline McRae of the home; two daughters, Treva Gilley, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Terrill Nichols, Wichita; two sons, Tony L. McRae, Plano, Texas, and Trenton A. McRae, Blue Springs; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Blue Springs Christian Church. Burial will be in the Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to the Make a Wish Foundation.
NADINE B. SHARPE
Nadine Broaddus Sharpe, 97, Reston, Va., formerly of Blue Springs, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, in Reston, Va.
Mrs. Sharpe was born Sept. 14, 1901, in Kansas City, and she had lived in Sharon Springs, Kan., and Ridgewood, N.J., before moving to Blue Springs in 1969. She then moved to Reston in 1992. She was a graduate of the Sharon Springs High School. She attended Huffs Business School in Kansas City and the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Her family history includes some of the earliest settlers in the Blue Springs area. She ws a member of the Blue Springs Historical Society, PEO Sisterhood, Eastern Star and the Sunny Side Urbannette Extension Club. She was a member of the Independence Pioneer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Q. Sharpe in 1982.
Her survivors include her children, Suzanne S. Lawson and R. Quentin Sharpe; four grandchildren, Lisa Thrasher, Christopher Thrasher, Jacqueline Gwilt and Carol Sharpe; and a great-grandson, Dylan Gwilt.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs, 2801 W. Walnut. Interment will be in the Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, 205 South 17th Street, Blue Springs. The family suggests memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs or to the Blue Springs Historical Society.
JAMES L. BARTON
James Leonard Barton, 49, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Carondelet Manor Care Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Barton was born Nov. 23, 1948, in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1962. He was an electrical worker and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker`s Union Local 53. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, an Eagle Scout, a 1967 graduate of William Chrisman High School, and a 1991 graduate of Penn Valley Community College.
His survivors include his parents, Francis and Joyce Barton of the home; a brother, Stan Barton, Oklahoma City; a niece, Anne Nicholson, Dallas; and a nephew, David Baron, Oklahoma City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Blue Springs Hospice.
JAY E. BRANDT
Jay Elson Brandt, 78, Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Westchester Garden`s Nursing Center, Clearwater.
Mr. Brandt was born in Ralston, Iowa, and had lived in Independence before moving to Clearwater in 1982. He was a pilot for TWA for 30 years. He was a member of the Clearcreek RLDS congregation.
His survivors include his wife, Sarah Virginia Brandt; three sons, David Craig Brandt, Sonora, Ky., Jeffrey Daniel Brandt, Blue Springs, and Stephen Wesley Brandt, Temple Terrace, Fla.; a brother, James Brandt, Dunedin, Fla.; two sisters, Martha Dearborn, Little Rock, Ark., and Margaret Grosh, Brandon, Fla.; four grandsons, Judson, Christopher Daniel, Michael Laird and Paul Wesley Brandt; and three great-grandsons, Colin, Corey and Trevor Michael Brandt.
No services at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sylvan Abbey Funeral home, Clearwater, Fla.
JOY "JENNY" IRWIN
Joy "Jenny" Irwin, 69, Independence, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Irwin was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Kansas City. She was a tool setter for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, retiring in 1985. Her husband, Leonard Earl Irwin, died in 1965.
Her survivors include three daughters, Colet Jarred, Adrian, Mo., and Candy Carey and Kathy Brixey, both of Independence; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be noon Thursday at Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
