PAULINE E. FOWLER

Pauline Elizabeth Siegfried Fowler, 86, Independence, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.

Mrs. Fowler was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Independence, and lived in California until the end of World War II, when she returned to Independence. She was a 1929 graduate of William Chrisman High School and attended Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, where she was the art editor for the 1930 and 1931 Acacia. She studied art at the old Independence Institute held in the Swope Mansion and studied and performed on the piano for some 25 years. While in high school, she won the state contest in piano. She was a charter member of the Wahdemna choral group of the RLDS Stone Church, and was an officer, director and actor with the White Masque Players.

She was a member of the South Crysler RLDS congregation. She sang in local musical and operatic products in Independence and Kansas City, was a member of the Community Art Association, and had studied art with Robert Tindall and Sidney Moore. She was a former officer and had been an active member of the Independence Young Matrons since 1946. During the 1950s, she was a member of and served one year as president of the Alton Elementary School PTA. While in California, she taught piano and drama. She took and taught several Red Cross courses in first aid and lifesaving, and served her home area in California by organizing and directing first aid block stations in preparation for possible war needs.

She joined and reorganized the Jackson County Historical Society and in 1960, she was appointed director of the archives for the society, in which capacity she served for six years. She then worked as an industrial librarian at the Vendo Co. in Kansas City for six years and after her retirement, she again served as the archivist at the Historical Society. She served nine years on the Heritage Commission of the city of Independence as a charter member and helped research, write and design the book Independence, Mo., for the commission.

She served on the mayor`s task force for the development of the National Frontier Trails Center, and assisted the National Park Service with its early planning and development of the Truman home. She was a charter member of the Oregon-California Trails and the Santa Fe Trail associations and the Friends of Missouri Town 1855; a member of the Heritage League; a former officer and member of the board of directors and the research and restoration committees of the Bingham-Waggoner Historical Society. She was a member of the Jackson County Historical Society and its archives operating committee; the Missouri River Outfitters chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association; the Trails Head chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association; National Park Service`s Santa Fe Trail Advisory Council, and the Vaile Victorian Society.

She had written for the Jackson County Historical Society Journal, Independence; Gone West!, St. Louis; Wagon Tracks; and the Santa Fe Trail Association magazine. Her national citations include the National Geographic Magazine, Time-Life Western Series, The Oregon Trail Revisited by Greg Franzwa and Along the Santa Fe Trail by Sandy Myers and Marc Simmons. She helped organize and conduct several tours of and walks through some of the many historic sites in and around Independence. She presented several talks about all aspects of local history and archival work to many interested groups and clubs.

She received many awards, including ones from the Jackson County Historical Society, city of Independence, U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service, Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of University Women and the Santa Fe Trail Council. She was presented with the Santa Fe Trail Association Rittenhouse Award in 1995. Her husband, Frank E. Fowler, died in 1987.

Her survivors include two children, Eric Fowler, Independence, and Kristin Fowler Miller, Grain Valley; a brother, Marc Siegfried, San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Lt. jg Seth Allen Miller, Virginia Beach, Va., Madge Elizabeth Miller, San Francisco, and Stephen Karl Franklin Miller and April Marie Miller, both of Grain Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the RLDS Stone Church, Lexington Avenue and River Boulevard. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Truman Heartland Community Foundation for the Independence Young Matron`s Scholarship Fund or the Friends of the National Frontier Trails Center, 318 W. Pacific Ave., Independence, Mo. 64050.

ROBERT "LEO" HOOPER

Robert "Leo" Hooper, 82, Sugar Creek, died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Hooper was born Jan. 9, 1916, in Redlands, Calif. He retired in 1968 as vice president of Fike Metal Products, and was a member of the Bear Creek Church in Osceola, Mo.

His survivors include his wife of 59 years, Viola May Hooper of the home; two nieces, Cheryl Perrin, Aiea, Hawaii, and Glenda Tilsworth, Sugar Creek; and two nephews, J.R. Hooper, Odessa, and Roger Hooper, Independence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

BETTY L. LEE

Betty Lou Lee, 66, Blue Springs, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Lee was born Jan. 24, 1932, in Metz, Mo., and lived in Butler, Mo., before moving to Blue Springs many years ago. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Adrian, Mo. She was preceded in death by a son, William Lee.

Her survivors include her husband, Robert W. Lee, and a son, Robert E. Lee, both of Blue Springs; and her mother and stepfather, Mary and Bob Carson of Long Beach, Calif.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Tri-City Ministries building fund.

VIRGINIA JOHNSON

Virginia Horton Johnson, 65, Adamsville, Tenn., formerly of Independence, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at McNairy County General Hospital, Selmer, Tenn.

Mrs. Johnson worked as a physician`s assistant in Memphis, Tenn., and Independence. She was a member of the Baptist faith.

Her survivors include two daughters, Celia Golliver, Savannah, Tenn., and Sandra Banks, Memphis; her father, Coleman Horton, and two sisters, Cornelia Haynes and Mary Melson, all of Savannah; a brother, Ancil Horton, Independence; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were today at the Shackelford Chapel, Savannah. Burial was in Memory Gardens of Hardin County.

JOSEPHINE SIMPSON

Josephine Marie "Joan" Simpson, 80, Independence, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at the Rosewood Care Center.

Mrs. Simpson was born Sept. 12, 1917, in Morgan Park, Minn., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a sales clerk for Raveill Hardware for 30 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the East Alton RLDS congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil B. Simpson in 1977, and a son, James Simpson in 1977.

Her survivors include a daughter, Susan Feitz, Lee`s Summit; two brothers, Donald J. Stark, Minnesota, and Lane V. Stark, Independence; three sisters, Helene P. Goodin, Independence, Blanche F. Farmer, Stockton, Mo., and Marian R. Ensign, Salt Lake City; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s Hospice of Blue Springs.

GEORGE F. ANDERSON

George Floyd Anderson of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Anderson was born April 11, 1910, in Hays Center, Neb., and lived in Nebraska, Colorado, California and in Marshall, Mo., before moving to the Resthaven Retirement Home in 1986. As a young man, he was a drag-line operator and did a lot of road construction work, and was a member of the Operating Engineers union. He co-owned a construction company in Colorado, was a welder in the shipyards in California, and was a mechanic and co-owned and operated a garage. He worked in the Leslie Salt plant in Newark, Calif., and Bell Sand and Gravel in Irvington, Calif. He then started his own business again, this time digging swimming pools until he retired.

He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a member of the priesthood, and was ordained to the office of deacon, priest and elder all at the San Leandro Branch. He had also taught the adult class, was active in youth work and also served as pastor. He was preceded in death by three wives, Rose Marie Yeager Anderson in 1948, Florence Elizabeth Lubeck Anderson in 1982, and Agnes Tooker Anderson in 1990.

His survivors include four children, Bonnie Fox, East Jordan, Mich., Georgia Campbell, Santa Maria, Calif., Roger Anderson, Wilmington, N.C., and John Anderson, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; two sisters, Hazel Driefhold, Ogallala, Neb., and Gladys Kirkpatrick, Roswell, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel.

MARGARET A. BRAWNER

Margaret Ann Brawner, 51, Independence, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Brawner was born Aug. 27, 1946, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident.

Her survivors include a son, Steven Randall Brawner, Independence; two daughters, Sheila Brawner, Independence, and Shanna Liberto, Kansas City; a brother, Mike A. Benkovich Jr., Kansas City; and two granddaughters, Amanda Nicole Dempsey and Ashley Marie Brawner.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington

cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

HELEN M. GORHAM

Helen Marie Gorham, 75, Independence, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Gorham was born April 30, 1922, in Fleming, Mo., and lived there before moving to Independence. She was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bincen P. Gorham, and a daughter, Sherri Marie.

Her survivors include a daughter, Karen Glenn, Independence; a sister, Frances Richardson, Liberty, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Tracy R. Glenn and Dana N. Glenn, both of Independence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Prichard Chapel, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Burial will be in Thomson cemetery, near Lawson, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

ALTIN E. SMITH

Altin Eugene Smith, 72, Independence, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born March 28, 1926, in Kansas City, and had lived in Independence most of his life. He worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 26 years, retiring in 1984. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Smith in 1997, and a son, Gary Dean Wilson in 1961.

His survivors include two daughters, Debra Smith, Independence, and Judy Marshall, Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Coline Smead, Independence; six grandchildren, Angela Bayless Melissa Marshall, Stephanie Smith, Eric Marshall, Matthew Smith and Jean Smith; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.

TYLER C. JONES

Tyler Cobb Jones, 23, Lee's Summit, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at Childrens' Mercy Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born Sept. 3, 1975, in Kansas City. He was a member of St. John LaLande Catholic Church. He graduated from O'Hara High School in 1994. He participated in four years of soccer and served as a basketball manager four years. He also attended two years at Longview Community College and served as a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Josephine Barnett and Paternal great-grandfather, Lawrence Gibbons.

His survivors include his father and mother, Lawrence R. and Teresa J. Jones, a sister, Tessa Jones, and a brother, Trenton Jones, all of the home; grandparents, Elmer and Ruth Barnett, Oak Grove, Raymond and Barbra Jones, Kerrville, Texas, and Lester and Connie Todt, Blue Springs; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John LaLande Catholic Church, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Tyler Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund at O'Hara High School, in care of the Bank of Jacomo, South Missouri 7, Blue Springs, Mo.; or to the PICU unit of Childrens' Mercy Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.

EDGAR L. COX

Edgar Lee Cox, 84, Independence, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Cox was born June 5, 1914, in Centerview, Mo., and had lived in Independence for the past 42 years. He retired from the Navy after more than 21 years, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a carpenter for Andes and Roberts from 1956 to 1976, and for the past 20 years was a farmer. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Blue Lodge.

His survivors include his wife, Katherine Cox of the home; a son, William Henry Cox, Independence; three daughters, Carol Ann Cox, Holden, Mo., and Linda Shadden and Cindy Motley, both of Independence; a brother, Billy S. Cox, West Covina, Calif.; a sister, Bertha Boosinger, Holden; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mound Grove cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel, Independence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hope House or the American Cancer Society.

STEVEN M. IVY

Steven M. Ivy, 44, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Blue Springs, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, in Arizona.

Mr. Ivy was born Nov. 5, 1953, in Evanston, Ill., and lived in Independence and Blue Springs before moving to Phoenix in 1993. He attended William Chrisman High School and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy. He was a pharmacist for Ivy Drug in Independence and Lowe Drug in Blue Springs.

His survivors include his wife, Gail, a son, Brandon, and a daughter, Jennifer, all of Phoenix; his parents, Gene and Lois Ivy, Lee`s Summit; a brother, Robert Ivy, Blue Springs; and a sister, Carol Kirkendall, Independence.

Memorial services were June 13 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Inurnment was in the Love Mausoleum in Green Acres cemetery, Scottsdale.

GRANT LAW JR.

Grant Law Jr., 78, Lake Tapawingo, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mr. Law was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Kansas City. He was a steel laborer. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of American Legion Post 499 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1000. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Zumalt.

His survivors include his wife, Pearl Law of the home; and a stepson, George Zumalt, Olympia, Wash.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
