TROY A. THOMAS JR.
Troy Alexander Thomas Jr., 26, Indianapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Thomas was born March 4, 1971, in Kansas City, Mo., and lived in Independence from 1971 until moving to Indianapolis in 1993. He worked at the Palomino Bar and Restaurant and was a member of the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Independence. His survivors include a son, Christian A. Thomas, Indianapolis; mother and stepfather, Muriel and Jerry Woodburn, Independence; father and stepmother, Robert and Barbara Thomas, Indianapolis; a brother, Travis Morris, Independence; grandmothers, Dorothy Rudd, Kansas City, Kan., and Audrey Thomas, Independence; and three aunts, Diana Rudd-Shaffer, Debbie Rudd-Lynch and Barbara Pendergraff.
Services were today at the church; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Christian Thomas trust fund, in care of Murial Woodburn, 16700 Ellison Way, Independence, Mo. 64055. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
HARVEY L. "GRIGGE" WARREN JR.
Harvey Lee "Grigge" Warren Jr., 51, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Warren was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a construction inspector for George Butler and Associates for three years. He was a member of St. Cyril`s Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge No. 3717, Sugar Creek, Tribe of Mic-O-Say Eagle Scout Troop 203 and was a past member of the Three Trails Shootout Gang.
His survivors include two sons, Russ R. Warren, Sweet Springs, Mo., and Matthew R. Hess, Independence; and two grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 8:15.
ELWOOD "GENE" E. CRANDALL
Elwood "Gene" E. Crandall, 72, Independence, passed away Jan. 2, 1998, in his home.
He was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Lawton, Okla., and moved to Independence in 1927. He attended McCoy Elementary School and William Chrisman High School, graduating in 1943.
Mr. Crandall enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served in the South Pacific on the ATR 33 Seagoing Tugboat until the end of World War II.
He married
Mary Eizabeth Ray, May 9, 1947.
He worked for Standard Oil Co. of Sugar Creek, from 1948 to 1960. He worked for the Ford Motor Co. Claycomo plant from 1960 until his retirement in 1972.
Mr. Crandall was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 76 in Independence. He served as Worshipful Master of the lodge in 1989. For several years he carried all five proficiency cards for the State of Missouri. He was also a member of the Ararat Shrine York Rite and Scottish Rite organizations.
He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, and was called to the Tribe of Mic-O-Say in 1970.
Mr. Crandall was preceded in death by his mother, Emma, and stepfather, George Dillee. His brothers John and David also preceded him in death.
Mr. Crandall is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; two sons Curt Crandall, Buckner and Chris, Blue Springs;and five grandsons, Cameron, Cory, Benjamin, Eric and Kyle.
Memorial and Masonic services will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Friends may call beginning at 6:30 Sunday at the chapel.
The family recommends contributions to the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, H. Roe Bartle Swimming Pool Fund, Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America.
GIDEON J. EAGLESON
Gideon Jane Eagleson, 92, Harrisonville, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in the Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville, Mo.
She was born Nov. 19, 1905, in Golden, Mo. She married
William "Bill" Eagelson Sept. 26, 1923.
Mrs. Eagleson lived in Independence before moving to Garden City, Mo., in 1954. She moved to Harrisonville in 1976. She was a member of the East Lynne (Mo.) Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Eagleson was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, Sept. 1, 1992, and by an infant daughter, Anna Belle.
She is survived by three sons: Paul Eagleson, Harrisonvill; William Eagleson, Independence, and Herbert Eagleson, Garden City; four daughters; Naomi Ellot, Mountain View, Mo., Betty White, Harrisonville, Mary Carlyle, Warrensburg, Mo., and Martha Stone, North Port, Fla.; 28 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren and 50 great-great-grandchidren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at East Lynne Baptist Church in East Lynne, Mo. Burial will be in Clearfork cemetery, Garden City, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville.
Memorial contributions can be made to the East Lynne Baptist Church.
JERRY IRWIN
Jerry Irwin, 81, Bronaugh, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, in Research Hospital, Kansas City.
She was born June 19, 1916, in Hoisington, Kan.She married
Marion F. Irwin Dec. 30, 1937, in Paris, Mo.
Mrs. Irwin was a 1936 graduate of Emporia State Teachers College, earning a degree in music education. She taught school for three years in Gardner, Kan., and Turner, Kan., before moving to Vernon County in 1946.
After raising her family, Mrs. Irwin returned to teaching, retiring in 1973.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star; PEO Sisterhood Chapter DW, and numerous bridge clubs. She served as a church musician for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Bronaugh United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice Shuman.
Mrs. Irwin is survived by her husband Marion, of the home; four daughters; Jerry Lee Brummett, Kearney, Mo., Donna Jean Watkins, Independence, Mo., Joalyn Marie McKenney, Fredricktown, Mo., and Janet Chapman, Kearney, Mo; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Bronaugh United Methodist Church, with burial at the Worsley cemetery, Bronaugh. All arrangements under the direction of the Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, Mo..
REGINA ELAINE WATKINS
Regina Elain Watkins, 27, Blue Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center.
She was a certified nurses aid and a member of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her daughter, Brandi Shacoy Watkins, of the home; her mother, Lovella Watkins, Blue Springs; father Walter A. Watkins, Joplin, Mo.; one brother, John Edison, Salina, Kan.; three sisters Coy Watkins, of the home; Varonica Watkins, Joplin; and Jen-Ca Watkyns, Joplin; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, 205 S. 17th St., Blue Springs. Friends may call beginning at noon before the service.
Donations may be made to the Brandi Shacoy Watkins scholarship fund or to the family to defray funeral costs.
BESSIE M. BANNER
Bessie M. Banner, 71, Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City. Mrs. Banner was born March 15, 1926 in Camdenton, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church.
Her survivors include her husband, Gerald R.Banner, of the home; two sons, Jerry W. Banner, Winter Park, Fla., and Guy Banner, Osage Beach, Mo.; two daughters, Beverly Houx, Blue Springs, and Linda Sturges, Independence; two brothers, Lewis Capps and Marvin Capps, both of Camdenton, Mo.; three sisters, Alveritta Leap, Camdenton, Mo., Martha Watkins, Canton, Ill., and Betty Bradshaw, Mankato, Kan.; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were today at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home in Blue Springs. Burial was in Blue Springs cemetery.
SISTER MARY DOMINICA GANTNER
Sister Mary Dominica Gantner, 79, Independence, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Independence.
Sister Gantner was born Sept. 25, 1908, in Ottmanshofen, Germany. She came to the United States in 1925 and professed Aug. 12, 1927, in Nevada, Mo. She served for 18 years at St. John`s Seminary.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Nevada, Mo. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., tonight, at Sisters of St. Francis Convent, 2100 Noland Road. Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the convent. Arrangements by George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.
EDGAR F. JAYNES
Edgar F. Jaynes, 72, Lancaster, Ohio, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Fairfield Medical Center.
Mr. Jaynes was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 11. He was a member and High Priest of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a former pastor of East Alton RLDS Church and the Ava (Mo.) RLDS Church. While in Independence he was active in the Red Cross, United Way, School Board and Civil Disaster Committee. He was retired after 30 years as a supervisor of Community & Employee Affairs for Remington Arms.
His survivors include his wife, Geri Abram Jaynes, Lancaster; two daughters, Frances Hammond, Orange, Texas, and Lois Jaynes, Houston, Texas; four sons, Scott Jaynes, Kansas City, Jared Jaynes, Aaron Jaynes and Peter Jaynes, all of Independence; grandchildren, Ethan Jaynes and Graham Jaynes; stepchildren, Ed Abram, Pickerington, Ohio, Bill Abram, Lancaster, Cindy Mowery, Canal Winchester, and David Abram, Denver; stepgrandchildren, Mike, Kara and Scott, Jonathan Abram, and Lisa and Emily Mowery; one sister, Pat Peyton; and one brother, Birge Jaynes; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held tonight at the Haltemann-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home in Lancaster, Ohio. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3376 Wheeling Road NE, Lancaster, Ohio, 43130.
BERTHA C. MILLER
Bertha C. Miller, 55, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at Vencor Hospital
Mrs. Millerwas born April 17, 1942, in Lead Hill, Ark. She worked as a nurse at Trinity Lutheran Hospital for more than 25 years. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. 385 in Independence.
Her survivors include her husband, Loyd Miller, of the home; two daughters, Robin Jenks, Independence, and Paula Hamilton, Buckner; her parents, Roy and Jessie Warner, Independence; six grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, at George C. Carson and Sons Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight, at the chapel.
DOROTHY L. MONTY
Dorothy L. Monty, 83, Salina, Kan., died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kan.
Mrs. Monty was born June 13, 1914, in Abilene, Kan. She worked as staff dietitian at St. Mary`s Hospital and the Kohler Diet Kitchen in Rochester, Minn, chief dietitian at St. Catherine`s Hospital in Omaha, Neb., and was a dietitian instructor at Creighton University. She also taught home economics at North Junior High School and Salina Central High School. She was a school counselor for Central High School in Salina for several years. She received the Nazareth-Marymount College Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the National Education Association Distinguished Service Award. She retired from teaching and counseling in 1979. She was a member of St. Mary`s Catholic Church, St. Mary`s Church Circle, the Salina Regional Health Center Auxiliary, and the Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon L. Monty, on Aug. 5, 1995.
Her survivors include one son, John Monty, Independence; five daughters, Kathlenn Hlavacek, Overland Park, Kan., Patricia Butler, West Linn, Ore., Carol Nowak, St. Peters, Mo., Jane Wise, Tucker, Ga., and Rosemary Kauffman, Newton, Kan.; three brothers, Raymond Whitehair and William Whitehair, both of Abilene, Kan., and Dr. Leo Whitehair, Rockville, Md.; three sisters, Sister Mary Mark, Margaret Kelley, and Rosemary Crawford, all of Salina; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, at St. Mary`s Catholic Church in Salina. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 tonight. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary`s Catholic Church, Salina Hospice or Salina Birthright.
KHIN HNIN MYA
Khin Hnin Mya, 37, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Mrs. Mya is survived by her husband, Nay Win and two sons, Wanna Nay Win and Wai Yan Nay Win, all of the home; her father, U Khin Maung Yee, her mother, Daw Yin Yin Kyi, and her brother, Mg Sett Aung, all of Burma.
Mrs. Mya donated her body to science.
FRANK DELBERT WHITE SR.
Frank Delbert White Sr., 90, of Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at the Rosewood Health Care Center.
Mr. White was born Oct. 21, 1907 in Independence, where he lived most of his life. He was an accomplished violinist and a concert master of the Kansas City Symphony, and for many years played in the Independence Symphony. He was a member of the Wahdemna Choral. He managed the organ department for the Baldwin Piano and Organ Company in Kansas City for 18 years. He was also a hearing aid technician, and owned and operated Hearing Aid Centers in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, and in Independence, where in 1969 he established the White Hearing Aid Center until his retirement in 1976. He was an ordained minister and Evangelist Patriarch in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille May White, in 1976; and a daughter, Ruth Ann Darling, in 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Winnogene White, of the home; two sons, Frank D. White Jr., and James E. White, both of Blue Springs;a daughter, S. Maxine Gouldsmith, of Buckner; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
