EDITH C. FERRELL
Edith Charlene Ferrell, 58, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Truman Medical Center East, Kansas City.
Mrs. Ferrell was born Sept. 20, 1939, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. Her husband, Willard Ferrell, also died Jan.3, 1998.
Her survivors include three sons, Ernest Hamilton Jr., Matthew Hamilton and Thomas Hamilton, all of Independence; five daughters, Cecelia Hamilton, Ella Burgess, Melissa Cary and Ethel Hamilton, all of Independence, and Eva Hamilton, Gladstone, Mo.; three brothers, Jerry Nichelson, Dallas, Dwight Nichelson, Independence, and Ted Nichelson, Buckner; and 23 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center Chapel, 1509 W. Truman Road; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mortician`s Service, Kansas City.
WILLARD C. FERRELL
Willard Clyde Ferrell, 78, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Truman Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Ferrell was born June 16, 1919, in Appalachia, Va., and had lived in this area most of his life. He retired in 1984 from Hanna Rubber Co., Kansas City, with 12 years of service. He was a member of the Star Twirlers Square Dancers. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Ferrell, who also died on Jan. 3, 1998. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Redina Martin on Nov. 19, 1997.
His survivors include four sons, Ron Ferrell, Grandview, Mo., Bill Ferrell, Creighton, Mo., Larry Ferrell, Columbia, Kan., and Frankie Ferrell, Claremore, Okla.; a daughter, Crystal Morris, Ironton, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private services; cremation. Entombment will be in Lawrence, Kan. Arrangements are under the direction of Mortician`s Services, Kansas City.
EDNA E. BUFORD
Edna E. Buford, 93, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the Independence Health Care Center.
Mrs. Buford was born June 10, 1904, in Graham, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1926. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence and the Women`s Bowling Association for 40 years. Her husband, David A. Buford, died in 1968.
Her survivors include a sister, Lula Mae Martin, Independence, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
LUCY M. DURNIL
Lucy M. Shireman Durnil, 93, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the Independence Manor Care Center.
Mrs. Durnil was born Oct. 22, 1904, in Springfield, Ohio, and had lived in Independence most of her life. She worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant during World War II and owned a cake decorating service for more than 40 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Samuel E. Durnil.
Her survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the church.
FRANCES M. DYER
Frances Marie Tillie Dyer, 84, Springfield, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Dyer was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 65 years and the Campbell United Methodist Church in Springfield.
Her survivors include her husband of 68 years, W. Todd Dyer; a brother, Dale Carmical, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Edna Glazier, Independence; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Ernie and Helen Tucker, Springfield.
Cremation. Memorial services were held Dec. 30 in Springfield.
MADAE H. FOLLETT
Madae H. Follett, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Follett was born Sept. 22, 1922, and had lived in this area most of her life. She was an elementary school teacher in the Kansas City School District for 20 years, teaching at the Carlisle, Sugar Creek and Meserve schools, retiring in 1987.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Cradles and Crayons, 1711 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. 64108.
ANNA M. GAGLIARDI
Anna Mary Hodges Gagliardi, 81, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Gagliardi was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Kansas City and had lived in Independence for 48 years. Anna Mary, "Speedy Hodges, " was one of the original roller derby skaters and in the mid-1930s, skated around the United States in a touring roller derby known as the Transcontinental Roller Derby. She was an accomplished artist.
Her survivors include her husband of 60 years, Hug Gagliardi of the home; three sons, Jack Gagliardi, Monte Gagliardi and Jamie Gagliardi; a sister, Winifred Walters; two brothers, Armand Hodges and Curtis Hodges; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, Raytown; cremation. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association of Western Missouri, 2007 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. 64108.
EDGAR F. JAYNES
Edgar F. Jaynes, 72, Lancaster, Ohio, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Fairfield Medical Center.
Mr. Jaynes was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post11. He was a member and high priest of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a former pastor of East Alton RLDS Church and the Ava (Mo.) RLDS Church. While in Independence he was active in the Red Cross, United Way, School Board and Civil Disaster Committee. He was retired after 30 years as a supervisor of Community & Employee Affairs for Remington Arms. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude EnOi Foo Jaynes.
His survivors include his wife, Geri Abram Jaynes, Lancaster; two daughters, Frances Jaynes Hammond, Orange, Texas, and Lois Jaynes, Houston; four sons, Scott Jaynes, Kansas City, and Jared Jaynes, Aaron Jaynes and Peter Jaynes, all of Independence; stepchildren, Ed Abram, Pickerington, Ohio, Bill Abram, Lancaster, Cindy Mowery, Canal Winchester, and David Abram, Denver; a sister, Pat Peyton, Shawnee, Ohio; a brother, Birge Jaynes, Heath, Ohio; grandchildren, Ethan Jaynes and Graham Jaynes; stepgrandchildren, Mike, Kara and Scott Pickerington, Jonathan Abram, and Lisa and Emily Mowery; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Jan. 2 in Lancaster. The family suggests contributions in his memory to your favorite charity or church.
OTTO M. SMOLNY
Otto M. Smolny, 86, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Smolny was born Feb. 25, 1911, in Klein Raschen, Germany, and came to Independence from Germany in 1953. He was a maintenance worker for Independence Regional Health Center for 20 years, retiring in 1974. He was an elder in the Walnut Gardens RLDS congregation.
He is survived by his wife, Frieda K. Smolny of the home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
LUCY M. DURNIL

MARY E. GREEN
Mary E. Green, 77, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Truman Medical Center East.
Mrs. Green was born May 11, 1920, in Rholf, Iowa, and had lived in Independence most of her life. She wrote poetry and short stories. She had been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 27 years, where during that time she had been a visiting teacher, and had taught Sunday school classes and at the Relief Society. She was also a member of the Young Womens Association.
Her survivors include her husband of 55 years, William "Bill" Green, Independence; three sons, Gregory William Green, Kansas City, Geoffrey Joseph Green, Atlanta, and Ronald Andrew Green, Independence; two daughters, Jennifer Brehe, Kansas City, and Judy Epperson, Harrisonville, Mo.; two sisters, Edith Vincent, Lee`s Summit, and Esther Squire, LeClaire, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
FRANCES M. JOHNSON
Frances M. Johnson, 90, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the Independence Manor Care Center.
Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 16, 1907, in Carrollton, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a member of the Mount Washington RLDS congregation. Her husband of 60 years, Calvin Johnson, died in 1987.
Her survivors include two sons, Bill Johnson, Shelton, Wash., and Clyde Johnson, Independence; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
ALBERTA MOORE
Alberta Swain Moore, 93, Lee`s Summit, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center in Lee`s Summit.
Mrs. Moore was born Aug. 29, 1904, in Galveston, Texas, and had lived in the Independence area most of her life. She was a nurse in the Independence area for several years until the late 1930s. She was a member of the East 39th Street RLDS congregation.
Her survivors include her husband, Ross E. Moore of the home; a son, Gene Arnold Moore, Layton, Utah; a daughter, Ardis Carol Moore, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a sister, Edith Brockway, San Jose, Calif.; one grandson; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
MARGARET J. RICHARDSON
Margaret J. Richardson, 92, Allentown, Pa., formerly of this area, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown.
Mrs. Richardson was born in Anamoose, N.D. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, teaching in North Dakota, St. Francis Xavier and St. Bernadette Catholic grade school in Kansas City, and Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic grade school in Independence. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Allentown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Richardson.
Her survivors include two sons, Robert J. Richardson, Los Gatos, Calif., and Dr. Ralph J. Richardson, Macungie, Pa.; two daughters, Mary Pat Berkin, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Judith Ann Bunney, Potomac, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Weber Funeral Home Inc., Allentown. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery, LosAltos, Calif. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
WOODROW L. THOMAS
Woodrow L. Thomas, 81, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Thomas was born April 13, 1916, in Blue Springs, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a parking attendant at Crown Center before his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Thomas of the home.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Blue Springs cemetery.
