MARGARET M. EHLERS
Margaret M. Gross Ehlers, 90, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Independence.
Mrs. Ehlers was born Oct. 29, 1907, in Osborn, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City for 45 years before moving to Independence. She graduated from high school in Osborn and attended the former Missouri Wesleyan College, Cameron, Mo.She earned her degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She taught high school in Gideon, Mo., and taught physics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She was a member of the Christ Methodist Church, Independence, and a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn I. Hammond.
Her survivors include her husband, Jesse Ehlers, of the home in Kansas City; a son, John F. Ehlers, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a brother, John Gross, Columbia; a sister, Elizabeth Johnson, Osborn; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron. Burial will be in Osborn Evergreen cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
CYNTHIA "TAMMY" GEORGE
Cynthia "Tammy" George, 38, Excelsior Springs, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the Excelsior Springs Medical Center.
Ms. George was born Nov. 21, 1959, in Kansas City, and lived in Independence before moving to Excelsior Springs. She was a PBX operator for Commerce Bank in Kansas City.
Her survivors include four sons, Michael, Trenton, Zephaniah, and Joseph, and two daughters, Kelly and Alisha George, all of the home; her mother and stepfather, Betty and Phillip Wilkinson, Crystal Lakes, Mo.; two stepbrothers, Eddie and Daniel Wilkinson, both of Independence; two sisters, Victoria Hobson, Independence, and Bambi Wagle, Excelsior Springs; maternal grandmother, Beyrl Hatcher, Excelsior Springs; paternal grandmother, Edith Claibourn, Laurie, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Excelsior Springs Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness; cremation. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Prichard Chapel, Excelsior Springs. The family suggests contributions to the Cynthia George Memorial Fund, in care of Melissa Ludwig at the Commerce Bank of Kansas City.
JAMES K. GIVENS
James Keith Givens, 25, Gladstone, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr.Givens was born May 31, 1972, in Ringgold, La.
His survivors include his wife, Shelley Givens of the home; one son, Christopher Aaron Givens, Pinetop, Ariz., one stepson, Jacob Matthew Fabert of the home; his mother, Julie Lisonbee-Simpson, Blue Springs; his father, Garry Givens, Uncertain, Texas; three brothers, Sean Givens and Keet Givens, both of Blue Springs, and Clark Givens, Gladstone; his paternal grandfather, Clinton Givens, Tallulah, La.; two aunts; and three uncles.
Cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.
SYLVESTER J. "SYL" HERZOG
Sylvester J. "Syl" Herzog, 86, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Independence Manor.
Mr. Herzog was born April 4, 1911, in St. Louis, and had lived in this area for 37 years. He worked for many years as a district manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. before he retired. He was a member of the Nativity Catholic Church.
His survivors include his wife, Martha Herzog of the home; one son, Donald Herzog, Independence; one daughter, Virginia Twiehaus, Maumell, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, St. Louis. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kutis Funeral Home, St. Louis, and the rosary will be said Wednesday at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the St. Vincient DePaul Society.
BOB E. SMITH
Bob E.Smith, 76, Atherton, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Smith was born in Atherton and was a lifelong Atherton resident. He was a farmer and worked for the Atherton Levy District for more than 50 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Morna L. Smith in 1980.
His survivors include three sons, Ralph W. Smith, Walter R. Smith and Christopher E. Smith, and one daughter, Barbara J. Davis, all of Sibley; two sisters, Lorraine Goodwin, Green Forest, Ark., and Lucille Journey, Kansas City; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were today at New Salem Funeral Home. Burial was in Buckner Hill cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the cemetery Stone Bench Fund, 200 Chestnut, Sibley, Mo., 64088.

LaVERN A. BEHRENDS
LaVern Arthur Behrends, 77, Lake Lafayette, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Behrends was born in Algona, Iowa, and had lived in Nevada, Mo., Kansas City, Buckner and Odessa. He was employed by the Union Wire & Rope, Kansas City, from 1953 to 1975. He also farmed in Iowa and in the Nevada, Mo., area. He was a member of United Steel Workers Local 2916, Kansas City. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Odessa. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Behrends.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret Behrends of the home; two sons, Clarence D. Behrends, Marshall, and Greg L. Behrends, Buckner; a daughter, Donna Stacy, Lake Lafayette;a daughter-in-law, Goldie, Odessa; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. Burial will be in Mount Tabor cemetery, Odessa. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the First Assembly of God Church, Odessa.
LOTTIE M. BLYTHE
Lottie May Blythe, 93, Alma, Kan., died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Blythe was born April 3, 1904, in Union town, Kan., and had lived in Dwight, Kan., before moving to the Liberal, Mo., area in 1950 and then to Alma in 1968. She attended school and graduated at Union town. She had been employed by Big Smith Overall Factory in Lamar until her retirement. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Alma. Her husband, Cephus Carey Blythe, died in 1950. She was also preceded in death by a child, Cephus Bail.
Her survivors include three daughters, Elaine Blanton, Alma, Sara Kerstetter, Leon, Kan., and Audra Wehling, Longmont, Colo.; five sons, Andrew Blythe, Council Grove, Kan., Bill Blythe, Chanute, Kan., Robert Blythe, Grove, Okla., Donald Blythe, Independence, and Cecil Blythe, Thornton, Colo.; a sister, Martha Swink, Albuquerque, N.M.; 28 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Jan. 13 at the Peace United Church of Christ, Alma. Interment was in the Liberal City cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Blythe to the Wabaunsee County Museum, to the American Heart Association or to the Alma Library in care of the Gentry Funeral Home, Alma, Kan. 66401.
KAREN J. BURCHAM
Karen Jeanne (McKenzie) Burcham, 53, Independence, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Burcham was born Oct. 24, 1944, in Independence. She worked at the Wal-Mart in Independence for nine years as cash office manager. She was an accredited records technician. She was active in the PTA and was a Skylark leader and a member of the National Honor Society. She was a member of the RLDS Church.
Her survivors include her husband, Charles Burcham, of the home; two sons, Scott and Tom, both of Independence; one daughter, Laura, Olathe, Kan.; her mother, Jeannette McKenzie, Independence, her brother, David McKenzie, Independence; her sister, Kathy Stites, Leawood;and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, at the chapel.
DAMON L. FAIR, JR.
Damon Lee Fair, Jr., infant son of Damon Lee and Anita Jo Fair, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital.
His survivors include his parents; his maternal grandmother, Vickie Beemer, Independence; and several uncles and aunts.
Graveside services will be at noon, Monday, at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon, Monday, at Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
VELMA E. FRANCKA
Velma Ellen Francka, 81, Blue Springs, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Francka was born Jan. 31, 1898, in Pleasant Hope, Mo. She was a licensed practical nurse for Cox Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. She was a Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Francka, and a son, Kenneth Francka.
Her survivors include two sons, Carl L. Francka and Donald R. Francka, both of Blue Springs; a brother, Virgil Thompson, Bolivar, Mo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenlawn cemetery, Springfield, Mo. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.
IRENE S. GOODEN
Irene S. Gooden, 74, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Gooden was born Oct. 24, 1923, in Independence and was a life-long area resident. She was a member of the East Alton RLDS congregation, where she sang in the choir.
Her survivors include her husband, Lawrence "Larry" Gooden of the home; three sons, Dean Gooden, Sibley, Warren Gooden, Warrensburg, Mo., and John Gooden, Oak Grove; two brothers, Ray McCarty, Independence, and Bill McCarty, Cross Timbers, Mo.; a sister, Dorothy Love, Independence; and nine grandchildren, Daniel, John, Holly, Emily, Jessica, Nina, Amy, Kirsten and Alexander.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
ZONA E. NICKELL
Zona Elzada Nickell, 88, Lee`s Summit, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center.
Mrs. Nickell was born May 10, 1909, in Douglas County and lived more than 50 years in this area before moving to Lee`s Summit in 1996. She had worked for a land title company for many years. She was a member of the Susquehanna Baptist Church. Her husband, Robert Nickell, died in 1994.
Her survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in New Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Susquehanna Baptist Church.
FORREST B. WARREN
Forrest B. Warren, 73, Lee`s Summit, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Warren was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Howard County, Mo. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge 263 in Lee`s Summit. He was a Marine Corps paratrooper in the South Pacific during World War II. He earned a bachelor`s degree from the Finley Engineering College in 1949. He retired in 1986 from TRW after 35 years of service.
His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Nina Warren of the home; a son, Cuba Warren, Blue Springs; two daughters, Diana Slee, Independence, and Jacque Weeda, Lee`s Summit; a brother, Granville Warren, Ozark, Mo.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in the Lee`s Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where Masonic rites will be held. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.
ERIC E. SIDNEY
Eric Earl Sidney, 24, Bloomington, Ind., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, in Bloomington.
Mr. Sidney was born July 2, 1973, in Kansas City. He was a 1991 graduate of Blue Springs High School and a 1997 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University and was a student at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Raytown.
His survivors include his mother, Shirlie Sidney, Blue Springs; father and stepmother, John W. and Dollie Sidney, Lee`s Summit; a brother, John W. Sidney, IV, Lee`s Summit; a stepbrother, W. Scott Swain, Washington, D.C.; a sister, Leah M. Sidney, Lenexa, Kan.; a stepsister, StaceyL. Swain, Lee`s Summit; and maternal grandfather, Earl Sturgeon, Parsons, Kan.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in the Lee`s Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, at the chapel.
