HARRIET FISHER

Harriett Olds Fisher, 77, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Phoenix.

Mrs. Fisher was born in Clinton, Iowa, and lived in Kansas City and Independence from 1960 to 1996. She taught music at East High School, and played piano and organ at many Kansas City areas churches, including St. Mark`s United Methodist Church in Independence from 1978 to 1991. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Frank Fisher.

Her survivors include two daughters, Carol Ruth Earhart, Phoenix, and Susan Rebecca Clark, Scottsdale, Ariz.;one son, Paul David Fisher, Phoenix; one sister, Carol Olds Carlson, Corvallis, Ore.; one brother, Albert Olds, Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Bible Church, Phoenix. The family suggests contributions to Gideons International, Box 3471, Scottsdale, Ariz. 85271, or Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill. 60187.

ERNEST J. KOOP JR.

Retired Army Master Sgt. Ernest John Koop Jr., 55, Independence, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Sgt. Koop was born Nov. 7, 1942, in Portland, Ore., and had lived in this area the past four years. He served with the U.S. Army for 26 years, retiring in 1992, having served in the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. He had been a member of the Hill Cumorah Restoration Branch. He was preceded in death by a son, Shawn Michael Koop in 1994.

His survivors include his wife, Marilyn M. Koop of the home; four sons, John E. Koop, Kansas City, James A. Koop, Blue Springs, John B. Koop, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Robert M. Koop, Odessa; two daughters, Christine J. Friend, Stagecoach, Nev., and Heather C. Koop of the home; his mother and stepfather, Beatrice and Abe Brown, Independence; one sister, Janice Shafer, Modesto, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 9 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association of Western Missouri, 2007 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo., 64108.

JOHN W. THOMAS

John W. Thomas, 91, Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at the Arrowhead Adult Care Home in Peoria, Ariz.

Mr. Thomas was born in 1906 in Pittsburg, Kan., and spent the majority of his life in Independence. He moved to Sun City in 1984. He was a maintenance supervisor for American Aviation and General Motors. His wife, Laura Thomas, preceded him in death.

His survivors include one daughter, Betty Welch, Sun City; one son, Duane Thomas, Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services were Jan. 18 at the Thunderbird West RLDS Church, Glendale, Ariz. The family suggests contributions to the church, 5035 W. Paradise Lane, Glendale, Ariz. 85306.

FAE ALLEN

Fae Tarwater Allen, 93, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mrs. Allen was born Feb. 29, 1904, near Orrick, Mo., and lived in Enid, Okla., from 1946 until returning to Independence in 1974. She was a 1922 graduate of William Chrisman High School.

Her survivors include two daughters, Patricia Allen Dreizler, Redondo Beach, Calif., and Sarah Allen Osasa, Palm Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one niece, Lenore Brown Weeks, Independence.

Cremation. There are no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.

ROY E. FIKE

Roy E. Fike, 91, Climax Springs, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton.

Mr. Fike lived in Independence until moving to Lake of the Ozarks in Edwards, Mo., in 1970. He was circuit clerk of Jackson County of 22 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His wife, Mary Fike, died in 1995.

His survivors include one son, Albert Fike, Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Clair Eaken, Kansas City; one stepdaughter, Delores McLaughlin, Independence; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, Mo. Burial will be in Cable Ridge cemetery, near Edwards. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Warsaw Health Care Center, in care of the funeral home.

GOMER W. "WALLY" HARRINGTON

Gomer Wallace "Wally" Harrington, 75, Independence, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Harrington was born Jan. 31, 1922, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a milkman for Myer Dairy for 30 years until 1981. He then was a route driver for The Examiner from 1981 to 1995. He was a member of the Walnut Park RLDS Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Georgia "Lea" Harrington of the home; one son, Russ Harrington, Garden City, Mo.; four daughters, Linda Jane Nuckles, Patty Smith and Pam Johnson, all of Independence, and Sharon Evans, Sibley; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

NORMA J. JOHANSEN

Norma Jean Johansen, 64, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at the Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Johansen was born May 6, 1933, in Jemison, Ala., and had lived in Independence since 1959. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffery Lee Billuris. Her survivors include her husband, Gerald F. Johansen, and one son, Michael L. Johansen, both of the home; three daughters, Marsha Billuris, Debra L. Rich and Carla J. Zackula, and two brothers, Larry Glass and Darrell Glass, all of Independence; one sister, LaMerle Penniman, Bryantville, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RP Foundation.

HIRAM I. SIMMONS

Hiram Irving Simmons, 94, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at Rosewood Health Care Center.

Mr. Simmons was born June 15, 1903, in Newport, R.I., moved to Independence in 1942, then to Denver in 1957. He returned to Independence in 1971. He was a librarian for the Denver Public Library, retiring in 1971. He was an elder at the RLDS Stone Church and had been a chaplain at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital for 12 years. His wife, Florence Whipple Simmons, died in 1988.

His survivors include one daughter, Joyce Kuhn, Independence; and one granddaughter, Felicia Roth, Blue Springs.

Cremation. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Crysler RLDS Church. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at his daughter`s home, 3822 S. Trailridge Ave..

ETHEL I. SMEATON

Ethel I. Smeaton, 92, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Smeaton was born July 16, 1905, in Farnam, Neb., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a homemaker and also worked in the Laurel Club at the RLDS Auditorium. She was a member of the RLDS Second Church congregation. Her husband, James J. Smeaton Sr., died in 1977.

Her survivors include one daughter, Grace Louise Wanbaugh, Independence; one son, James J. Smeaton Jr., Nixa, Mo.; two brothers, Blaine Stoner, Independence, and Harley Stoner, Arlington, Texas; one sister, Rosie Breshears, Adrian, Mo.; five grandchildren, Charlene L. Bergman, Marla Kay Parks, Mark Smeaton, David Smeaton and John Smeaton; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.

NORMA J. THOMAS

Norma Jean Thomas, 69, Lee`s Summit, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998.

Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 14, 1928, in Atchison, Kan., and had lived in this area most of her life. She was a 1946 graduate of Central High School. She was a secretary for AT&T Technologies Inc. (formerly Western Electric) for 18 years before she retired. She was a member of Timothy Lutheran Church, Blue Springs.

Her survivors include three daughters, Katherine Ann Thomas, Lee`s Summit, Constance Susan Thomas, Ettingen, Switzerland, and Karen Diane Brown, Lee`s Summit; two brothers, Hank Geritz, Lee`s Summit, and Charles R. Geritz, Arizona; five grandchildren, Thomas Magers, Katrina Brown, Kyle Magers, Karlina Brown and Ryan Magers; oneniece; and one nephew.

Memorial services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Hill cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the church library. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel.

FRANK N. WELSH

Frank N. Welsh, 87, Stover, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Versailles, Mo.

Mr. Welsh was born July 30, 1910, in Dallas, lived in Los Angeles for 30 years, moving to Stover eight years ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Ruth Welsh of the home; four stepdaughters, Ruth Soldner and Carole Michaels, both of Independence, Shirley Young, Stover, and Phyllis Rippy, Kansas City; one stepson, John Lightfoot, Independence; a half brother, Annando Kramer, Independence; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.

JOHN W. "JACK" BUTCHER

John W. "Jack" Butcher, 83, Independence, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Butcher was born May 23, 1914, in Independence and was a lifelong Independence resident. He was a machine operator for Armco Steel for 33 years, retiring in 1973. He was a member of Northern Boulevard United Methodist Church, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of American Legion Post 21.

His survivors include his wife, Margaret G. Butcher of the home; two brothers, Earl E. Butcher, Independence, and Harold C. Butcher, El Monte, Calif.; three sisters, Maxine Struska, Missouri City, Texas, and Marjorie Ann Carlock and Shirley J. Marsh, both of Independence; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the memorial fund at the church.

LILLILAN M. KONRAD

Lillian Maurine Konrad, 88, Gladstone, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Mrs. Konrad was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Creighton, Mo. She was a graduate of Northeast High School and attended Maple Woods Community College. She was a charter member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, having served as an elder, clerk and deacon. She was also a member of the Joy Group and various women`s ministries. She was active in community affairs, was a member of the Republican Women`s Club and delivered for Meals on Wheels. She and her husband were instrumental in founding the Heart of America Dachshund Club and was the first woman to be appointed to the Clay County Election Board as a commissioner. She was employed by the election board for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Konrad.

Her survivors include three sisters, Jeannette Thompson, Independence, Willa Dee Bonville, Kansas City, and Mary Meyer, Liberty, Mo.; three nieces; three nephews; eight great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great-nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church, 1441 N.E. Englewood Road, Kansas City; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Diabetic Association, the building fund at the church or your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons White Chapel, Gladstone.

GEORGE A. SPRENGER

George A. Sprenger, 93, Liberty, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Liberty Hospital.

Mr. Sprenger was born Sept. 15, 1904, in Linn, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a retired steward for the Kansas City Terminal Railway, and a member of St. Ann`s Catholic Church, Independence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna J. Sprenger in 1994, and a daughter, Mary Ann Sprenger.

His survivors include three sons, Don Sprenger, Sunrise Beach, Mo., George Sprenger, Blue Springs, and William Sprenger, Liberty; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at St. George cemetery, Linn. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m.The family suggests contributions to the church.

ADELIA TIERNEY

Adelia Tierney, 88, Kansas City, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at The University Towers Medical Pavilion.

Mrs. Tierney was born Jan. 3, 1910, in Lone Jack. She worked for the Bernice Jackson Reporting Agency before she retired, and was a member of St. Thomas More Church, Kansas City.

Her survivors include her husband of 61 years, Thomas W. Tierney Sr. of the home; one son, Thomas W. Tierney Jr., Kansas City; three granddaughters, Tammy Tierney Allison, Kathleen Luther and Michelle Tierney; and two great-grandchildren.

Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the McGilley Midtown Chapel, Kansas City, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

George A. Sprenger, 93, Liberty, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Liberty Hospital.
