ELIZABETH "BETTY" HERMAN
Elizabeth "Betty" Herman, 89, Independence, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Herman was born June 2, 1908, in east Kansas City. She attended Chapel School, Central High School and the Kansas City College of Commerce. She was a stenographer and bookkeeper, one of many talents she used in the successful operation of the U-Smile Court, and later at the Stadium Inn. She was a writer of stories and poems, and enjoyed playing her organ and piano. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Karl M. Herman, Oct. 18, 1997.
Her survivors include one son, Gene Herman, Lee`s Summit; one daughter, Joan Brettell, Tyler, Texas; five grandchildren, Rod Fensom, Janet Herman Franklin, Theresa Kreuzkamp, Mary Edwards and Ann Meara; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
VIVIAN G. PALMER
Vivian G. Palmer, 85, Blue Springs, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center. Mrs. Palmer was born June 26, 1912, in Bolivar, Mo., and had lived in the Independence and Blue Springs areas for the past 55 years. She worked for Osco Drug for several years. She went to work in the mid-1950s for Western Auto and was a bookkeeper there for 10 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Palmer in 1982, and a son, Kirk Alan Palmer in 1962.
Her survivors include one nephew, Jerry Jones, Kansas City; and one niece, Sue Knapp, Blue Springs.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Independence Community Foundation, Gift of Hope Hospice Fund, 300 N. Osage, Independence, Mo. 64050. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
TERRY A. THOMPSON
Terry A. Thompson, 43, Blue Springs, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Blue Springs.
Mr. Thompson was born Nov. 11, 1954, and had lived in the Kansas City area before moving to Blue Springs 10 years ago. He was a member of Roofers Local 20 and had worked out of the Union Hall. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Andree Marie Thompson in May 1997.
His survivors include his parents, JohnI. Thompson Sr. and Shirley A. Thompson, one sister, Anita Davis, and his maternal grandmother, Stella Hewitt, all of Blue Springs; one brother, John I. Thompson Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.; two nephews; and niece.

CATHERINE FRIEDRICH
Catherine Friedrich, 95, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Friedrich was born June 16, 1902, in Arrow Rock, Mo., and had lived in Levasy, Mo., before moving to Independence in 1969. She was a member of the DAR and the Buckner Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Friedrich, and a son, Richard Friedrich.
Her survivors include her grandchildren, Dennis Friedrich, Lee`s Summit, and Patricia Copple, Grain Valley; a brother, Frank Eastham, Phoenix; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel.
LILLIAN M. HENDERSON
Lillian May Henderson, 89, Independence, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Henderson was born April 4, 1908, in Fall River, Mass., and spent her childhood in Washington, D.C. She was valedictorian of Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving as an organist, pianist, choir member, church school teacher and Herald House book steward. She and her husband accepted missionary assignments for 25 years. They ministered throughout the continental United States and Hawaii. She shared her talents of painting, handcraft and crocheting with the women`s department and served on the staff of numerous youth camps and reunions. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Henderson.
Her survivors include four daughters, Lillian Bayless, Blue Springs, Dorothy Gundling, Bluffton, S.C., Faith Beers, Hinsdale, Ill., and Janet Irby, Tiberon, Calif.; two sisters, Beatrice Purcell and Bertha Young;one brother, Thomas Wilkinson; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She donated her body to the Kansas University Medical Center for medical research. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 in the Chapel at the Groves in Independence.

Vivian G. Palmer, 85, Blue Springs, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.

Terry Allen Thompson, 43, Blue Springs, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at his home.

VIRGINIA L. MAHR
Virginia L. Mahr, 74, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Mahr was born July 18, 1923, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She loved big band music and ballroom dancing, and had taught at the Pla-Mor in the early 1940s. She was a member of the Unity Village church. Her husband, Richard Eugene Mahr, died in 1972.
Her survivors include a daughter, Debra Pratt, Blue Springs; a son, Ronald Mahr, Kansas City, Kan.; three nieces, Sandra Childers, Shirley Morgan and Carol Sue Burtwell; two nephews, Dean McMillian and Dennis McMillian; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.
DORIS R. MARTIN
Doris Rosemary Martin, 65, Chillicothe, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe.
Mrs. Martin was born March 8, 1932, in Union City, Tenn., and lived in Warrensburg, Mo., before moving to Chillicothe in 1995. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of the Nazarene in Chillicothe. Her husband, Daniel Austin Martin, died April 5, 1997.
Her survivors include four sons, James Stanfield, Texas, Harold Martin, Independence, Roy Martin, Fulton, Mo., and Danny Martin, Blue Springs; two daughters, Judy Greer, Chillicothe, and Kathy Abbott, Mountain View, Mo.; two sisters, Virginia James, Nebraska, and Shirley Thome, St. Louis; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Burial will be in Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery. There is no scheduled family visitation. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
EMMA L. JOHNSON
Emma L. Johnson, 86, Glasgow, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 2, 1911, in Harmony, Mo. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Francis Johnson, died July 29, 1995.
Her survivors include four sons, James L. Johnson and Dale Johnson, both of Glasgow, Kenneth Johnson, Independence, and Larry Johnson, St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Judy Morris, Muskogee, Okla.; and 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary`s Catholic Church. Interment will be in Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 5 and 7 to 9 tonight at the Friemonth Funeral Service Inc., Glasgow, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to St. Mary`s School or to the church.
JOY A. KEADLE
Joy Ann Keadle, 54, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Keadle was born Oct. 5, 1943, in Tyler, Texas, and had lived in Independence for 10 years.
Her survivors include two children, Jack Keadle and Laura Worley; her parents, William and Betty Allen; two sisters, Jeannette Parker and Betty Allen; two brothers, William J. Allen Jr., and Bob Allen; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
JAMES M. "JIM" PARDEE
James M. "Jim" Pardee, 70, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998.
Mr. Pardee was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Kansas City and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a security guard. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Herbert William Pardee in 1983.
His survivors include his wife, Ann Pardee of the home; a son, Jim Pardee, three daughters, Gail Holland, Melanie House and Sherry Hoskins, all of Independence; a brother, Herbert Pardee, Oak Grove; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
LOUIS N. "DEAN" WHITEHEAD
Louis N. "Dean" Whitehead, 76, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Whitehead was born in Logan, Iowa, and lived in Warrensburg, Mo., before moving to Independence. He was a school counselor for the Kansas City School District, retiring in 1983. He attended Graceland College, University of Iowa, University of Wyoming, Central Missouri State University, University of Colorado, University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he had been on the Standing High Council for 19 years. He had also been a pastor at the Eden Heights, Englewood and Enoch Hills congregations.He was presently an evangelist patriarch and attended the Cornerstone congregation. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Elma "Deanie" Whitehead of the home; one daughter, Vicky Cain, Kansas City; one brother, Harold Eldon Whitehead, Independence; and four grandchildren, Sara Cain, Emily Cain, Bradley Cain and Bethany Cain, all of Kansas City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Cornerstone Church building fund.
ALICE N. BANDY
Alice N. Barker Bandy, 77, Odessa, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Bandy was born Nov. 27, 1920, in Odessa, and had lived in Los Angeles before moving back to Odessa in 1996. She had been a business machine operator for Royal McBee Business Machines in Los Angeles. She was a life member of the Odessa VFW Auxiliary Post 5675 and a member of the American Legion in both Odessa and Los Angeles, a member of the Martha Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, Walnut Row Extension Club and American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil L. Bandy of the home; a stepson, Don Raebel, Festus, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Joanie Stokes, Festus, and Susan Raebel, California; a brother, Orville Barker, Odessa; and a sister, Verna Parman Rayhill, Odessa.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Barker cemetery, north of Odessa. The family suggests contributions to the Barker cemetery Association or American Heart Association.
MARY L. BRONSON
Mary Lou Bronson, 85, Kansas City, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Care Center.
Mrs. Bronson was born Jan. 5, 1913, in Mooresville, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of the North Independence congregation of Jehovah`s Witness. Her survivors include one son, Larry Bronson, and one daughter, Nancy Lee Macomber, both of Independence; one brother, Jay H. Berkshire, Eldon, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be noon Friday at the Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
ROBERTA M. DYSON
Roberta Mae Dyson, 85, Odessa, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at the Odessa New Haven Nursing Home.
Mrs. Dyson was born Aug. 16, 1912, in Beverly, Kan., and had lived in this area most of her life.
Her survivors include three sons, Robert Dyson, Independence, Terry Dyson, Higginsville, , Mo., and Gary Dyson, Kansas City, North; one brother, Edward Jilka, Salina, Kan.; one sister, Maxine Tourville, International Heights, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
