WILLIE P. YOWELL
Willie P. Yowell, 90, Independence, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mrs. Yowell was born in Kerrs Creek, Va. She was a homemaker and a member of the Blue Ridge Boulevard Christian Church.
Her survivors include one son, Robert Yowell Jr., Richmond, Texas; two daughters, Wilma Frances "Billie" Betts, Independence, and Peggy C. Burrus, Great Falls, Mont.; eight grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association of Western Missouri, 2007 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. 64108.
JOHN T. ADLARD SR.
John T. Adlard Sr., 80, Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of Independence and Odessa, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at Valley Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.
Mr. Adlard was born in Nottinghamshire, England. He and his wife, Leah Ann, started the first "Mugs Up Drive-in" on 23rd Street in Independence, and ran the drive-in for more than 20 years. He retired from Standard Oil Co. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II and was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say Honor Camping Program with the Boy Scouts of America. He was also an accomplished ham radio operator. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In addition to serving in numerous positions in the church throughout his life, he served three full time missions for the church, one in London, England, and two in Chile. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah Ann Greenwood Adlard.
His survivors include three children, Dr. John T. Adlard III, Odessa, Nancy Hansen, Gilbert, Ariz., and Selma Smith, West Valley City, Utah; 14 grandchildren; 27 grandchildren; and three siblings, George Adlard, Dorothy Lindsey and Betty Perry.
Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the LDS Chapel, Crestview and Conner, Odessa. Burial will be in the Odessa cemetery. Friends may call from 2 until service time at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Royer Funeral Home, Odessa.
EDWARD BRAKELMAN
Edward Brakelman, 77, Independence, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Brakelman was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Wupertal, Germany, and lived in Independence for 43 years. He retired from the Vendo Corporation in 1977.
His survivors include his wife, Freda Brakelman of the home; and a son, Ray Brakelman, Independence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
AUBREY D. CRAWFORD
Aubrey D. Crawford, 74, Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Crawford was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Quinlan, Texas, and had lived in Independence since 1951. He was a supervisor for GAF Roofing for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He was a Baptist.
His survivors include his wife, Gertrude Crawford of the home; a son, David Crawford, Kansas City North; a daughter, Peggy Calderello, Kansas City; four brothers, Arvin Crawford, Greenville, Texas, Gene Crawford, Garland, Texas, Buel Crawford, Dallas, Texas, and Doyle Crawford, Caddomills, Texas; a sister, Bonnie Payne, Caddomills, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Newcomer's Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
VIOLET L. GRAY
Violet Leonore Gray, 96, Park Rapids, Minn., formerly of Independence, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at her home on Potato Lake, north of Park Rapids.
Mrs. Gray was born Jan. 8, 1902, in Momence, Ill., and lived in Kansas City and Independence before moving to Park Rapids in 1963. She attended school in Momence, graduating from high school in 1919, and attended the University of Illinois, Champaign, for one year. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for the Kansas City White Goods Manufacturing Co. from 1920 until she retired. She was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church, Itasca Chapter 70 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ingleside Study Club, St. Joseph`s Hospital Auxiliary and the NSAL all in Park Rapids. She had also been a member of the United Methodist Women and the American Legion Auxiliary in Independence, serving as president of both organizations. She sang in the church choir for many years. Her husband of 62 years, Warren Gray, died in 1994.
Her survivors include three nieces and their families, Carolyn Clark and Patricia Larabee, both of Independence, and Susanne Cardello, Blue Springs; a half sister, Betty Noonan, Valparaiso, Ind.; and her caregivers, the Lassila family.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Lake Emma cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home, Park Rapids.
OLIVE P. HESSEFORT
Olive Pauline Hessefort, 80, Warsaw, Mo., died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at her son`s home in Harrisonville, Mo.
Mrs. Hessefort was born Jan. 25, 1918, in Tuscumbia, Mo., and had lived in Tuscumbia until moving to Wisconsin when she was 17 years old. She had also lived in Cole Camp, Mo., until moving to Warsaw in 1952. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Warsaw, and the Osage Valley Chapter 502 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Warsaw. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Anthony B. "Tony" Hessefort on April 15, 1991.
Her survivors include her four sons, Arnold Hessefort, Kansas City, Milton Hessefort and Joe Hessefort, both of Blue Springs, and Dale Hessefort, Harrisonville; a daughter, Florence Dieckman, Cole Camp; two brothers, Harold Vaughan, Versailles, Mo., and Orville Vaughan, Eldon, Mo.; a sister, Dean Musick, Versailles; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Warsaw. Burial was in the Riverside cemetery, Warsaw. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
BERYL E. LEUTY
Beryl Eldon Leuty, 75, Independence, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Leuty was born Aug. 5, 1922, near Hume, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1971. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 21 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1738. He was vice president of the Lu Dall Manufacturing Co., where he worked from 1959 until his retirement in 1984. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie 47 and St. Mark`s Catholic Church.
His survivors include his wife, Anna Belle Leuty of the home; three sons, Gary Leuty, St. Louis, George Leuty, Independence, and Clayton Leuty, Blue Springs; one daughter, Cindy Leuty, Los Angeles; one brother, John Leuty, Gladstone, Mo.; five grandchildren, Lisa Vinck, Sara Leuty, Cora Leuty, Anna Leuty and Zachary Leuty; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jacob Vinck.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Entombment will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery Mausoleum, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m.
MYRTLE L. BROCK
Myrtle L. Brock, 70, Kansas City, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Park Lane Hospital.
Mrs. Brock was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Pikeville, Tenn., and lived in Georgia before moving to this area in 1951. She worked in the maintenance department of Metcalf South Shopping Center.
Her survivors include her husband, James E. Brock of the home; a son, LeRoy Brock, Kansas City; four daughters, Patricia Farmer, Brenda Russell and Betty Brock all of Kansas City; and Kathy Wiggins, Blue Springs; her mother, Louvene Moore, Kansas City, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandhcildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
E. "CLAYTON" CALLEN
E. "Clayton" Callen, 79, Independence, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at St. Luke`s Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Callen was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Pocatello, Idaho. He was a carpenter and member of the carpenter`s union local No. 1329, the First Baptist Church of Independence, and the American Legion Post No. 21. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He received the Bronze Star.
His survivors include his wife, Glee Callen, of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, R. Kent Bailey, Independence, the Rev. Rodney Callen and Glenna, Drexel, Mo., and Phillip Callen and Kerry, Independence; seven grandchildren, Shanna Mundell, Michael Bailey, Staci Adams, Matthew Callen, Clayton ``C.J.`` Callen, Michael Garner and Jeff Callen; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the First Baptist Church of Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, at the First Baptist Church. The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church of Independence.
BEATRICE R. COLOVIN
Beatrice R. Colovin, 81, Zephyr Hills, Fla., died Dec. 20, 1997.
Mrs. Colovin was born July 15, 1916, in Mackinaw City, Mich. She lived in Independence from 1932 to 1975, when she retired and moved to Florida. She also lived in Laurie, Mo., near Lake of the
Ozarks. She owned the Plaza Restaurant in Englewood for five years, Sport Mart for two years, and Knoepker`s for 11 years. She was president of the Englewood Business Association for three years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in in Laurie, Mo., and in Zephyr Hills. She was a member of the Independence chapter of Sweet Adelines. She formed the Country Aire (Kittens band) in Zephyr Hills.
Her survivors include her husband, Charles V. Colovin, Zephyr Hills; two sons, Charles S. Colovin, Zephyr Hills, and James T. Colovin, Lancaster, Calif.; one daughter, Carolyn K. Roedel, Independence; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, at Mount Washington cemetery. She was cremated. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer`s Association.
THOMAS L. DUNNAM
Thomas Lee Dunnam, 59, Parkville, Mo., died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Mr. Dunnam was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Independence. He was a member of the Baptist Church and and U.S. Army veteran. He was self-employed with a security company.
His survivors include his wife, Linda, of the home; three sons, Thomas J. Dunnam and Brandon R. Cunningham, both of the home, and Ivan L. Dunnam, Japan; three daughters, Melodee K. Kelsey, Arizona; Belinda L. Robbins, Richmond, Mo., and Tammy R. Vaughn, Kingsman, Ariz.; his mother, Manda Dunnam, Sugar Creek; five brothers, William E. Dunnam, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Robert Dunnam, Independence, Russell E. Dunnam, Sugar Creek, Wesley Dunnam, Independence, and Earl O. Dunnam, Liberty, Mo.; five sisters, Norma L. Woods, Arcadia, Kan., Nina Allen, Independence, Beatrice Polet, Fort Scott, Kan., Margaret Williams, Holt, Mo., and Betty R. Finkle, Independence, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at noon, Monday, at St. Luke`s United Church of Christ, 727 N. Main St., in Independence. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday, at the George C. Carson and Sons Independence Chapel.
JESS A. ROWLAND
Jess A. Rowland, 81, Belton, Mo., died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Beautiful Savior Nursing Home.
Mr. Rowland was born Oct. 16, 1916, in Jasper, Ark., and had lived in the Kansas City area since 1952. He had been a truckdriver for ABF Truck Lines.
His survivors include three daughters, Sharon White, Buford, Ga., Jessie Louise Cochran, Independence, and Mary Pierce, Raymore, Mo.; three sons, L.C. Rowland, Columbus, Kan., Ronnie Rowland, Berryville, Ark., and James Rowland, Kansas City; a sister,
Dorothy Bell Smith, Tulare, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Green Lawn cemetery, Knasas City. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Park Lawn Funeral Home.
ROBERT M. STEWART
Robert M. Stewart, 73, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Stewart was born April 20, 1925, in Independence. He was a 1943 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He was the owner and operator of Stewart Electric Co. for more than 25 years, and the company later merged with Builders Hardware. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 21. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dana.
His survivors include his son, Richard Stewart, Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Ann Umphenour, Bridgewater, N.J.; one brother, William Stewart, McLean, Va.; and five grandchildren, Erica, Erin, Ron, Jason and Jared.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel.
VIRGINIA R. MARTIN
Virginia Rea Martin, 79, Independence, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at St. Mary`s Manor in Blue Springs.
Mrs. Martin was born July 27, 1918, in Perrin, Mo. She owned and operated a real estate agency for many years, and was a self-employed accountant. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Independence. Her husband, Marseilles Martin, died in 1994.
Her survivors include two daughters, Billie Rea Foster, Independence, and Helen Carole Martin Waugamen, Enid, Okla.; one brother, Bill Sims, Kansas City; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Christ United Methodist Church Family Life Center or to the American Lung Association.
CLARENCE E. CHALMERS
Clarence Edwin Chalmers, 77, Independence, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Chalmers was born July 19, 1921, in Henry County, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Co. and Ford Motor Co. in Claycomo before he retired.
His survivors include his wife, Marietta Chalmers of the home; two sons, Edwin L. "Buddy" Chalmers, Independence, and Gary Chalmers, Olathe, Kan.; three daughters, Judy Kay Cook, Independence, Beverly Ann Chabot, Keystone Heights, Fla., and Terry Jean Exley, Dallas; his stepmother, Clara Thomas, Nashville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call until service time at the chapel.
