MIKE T. BERISLAVICH
Mike T. Berislavich, 74, Independence, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Berislavich was born July 22, 1923, in Sugar Creek. He was a lifelong area resident and a member of the UAW Local 93. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a pipe fitter for Standard Oil Co. He retired from General Motors Leeds Assembly Plant.
His survivors include his wife, Mary E. Berislavich of the home; four sons, Tom Berislavich, Joe Berislavich, Jim Berislavich and Matt Berislavich; and four daughters, Susan Hercules, Betsy Stoll, Patty Clark and Mary Jane Rockley, all of the metro area; a brother, Barry Berislavich; 16 grandchildren, Stefani Berislavich, Stacy Berislavich, Ben Berislavich, Zak Berislavich, Jessica Berislavich, Josh Buchan, Marie Lee, Amy Hercules, Danny Armstron, Charley Stoll, Angie Stoll, Lisa Kirk, David Clark, Rachel Clark, Erica Rockley and Annelise Rockley; and two great-grandchildren, Vanessa Stoll and Cameron Lee.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church where the rosary will be said at 10:45 a.m. The family suggests contributions to the Nativity of Mary Memorial Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sheil Colonial Chapel.
CHRISTOPHER R. PENA
Christopher Robert Pena, 6, Independence, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998.
Christopher was born Feb. 4, 1992, in Kansas City. He was a kindergarten student at Ott Elementary School in Independence. He attended the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
His survivors include his parents, Richard and Valerie Pena, and a brother, David Randal Pena, all of the home; his paternal grandmother, Bernarda H. Monjaraz, Pharr, Texas; and his maternal grandmother, Esther Waller, Independence.
Graveside services were today at Mound Grove cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Speaks Midtown Chapel.
BETTY J. RACE
Betty J. Race, 72, Independence, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998.
Mrs. Race was born April 24, 1926, in Buckner. She was employed at Lake City Army Ammunitions Plant as a time keeper for 38 years. She was a successful breeder and exhibitor of show dogs, winning the top award at the Cairn Terrier Club of America Specialty Show in 1987. She was a past president of the Heart of America Cairn Terrier Club, secretary of the Heart of America Kennel Club and member of the Cairn Terrier Club of America and German shepherd Dog Club of America. She was active in the Rockwood Baptist Church, where she was acting Sunday school teacher prior to her illness. She also performed charity work through the Pilot Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, S.J. "Bud" Race.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Buckner cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Newcomer`s Noland Road Chapel.
CLARENCE J. STOCKMAN
Clarence J. Stockman, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Cox South Hospital, Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Stockman was born in Concordia, Mo. He was a purchasing agent for King Radio. He was a World War II veteran having served in occupied Japan. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church.
His survivors include his wife, Alice W. Stockman of the home; two brothers, Leonard Stockman, Sweet Springs, Mo., and Wilmer Stockman, North Kansas City; two sisters, Anna Marie Krause, Concordia, and Merilyn Stockman, Kansas City; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Floral Hills Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Wycliffe Bible Translators, Lutheran Bible Translators, City Union Mission or to the church.
DON B. WEIR
Don Barron Weir, 75, Kansas City, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at the Research Medical Center.
Mr. Weir was born Oct. 24, 1922, in Independence and had lived in this area most of his life. He had been a self-employed building contractor. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II flying more than 50 missions over Germany. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Weir in 1971.
His survivors include four daughters, Julia Tuttle, Spring, Texas, Anita Crowe, Independence, Jan Martin, Lakewood, Colo., and Donna Weir, Bemedgi, Minn.; two brothers, John Weir, Independence, and Kent Weir, Kansas City; three sisters, Betty
Nichols, Raytown, Adra Parker, Columbia, Mo., and Laura Gill, Leawood, Kan.; a half brother, Richard Weir, Independence; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Inurnment will be in Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery.
CASSANDRA S. RAYBURN
Cassandra Sue Rayburn, infant daughter of John and Sue Rayburn of St. Robert, Mo., died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Fort Leonard Wood Hospital, Rolla, Mo.
Her survivors also include her grandparents, Ken and Lynette Gaverth, Blue Springs, and Mildred Call, Raymore, Mo.; and many other relatives.
Private graveside services will be held at Blue Springs cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Waynesville Korean Baptist Church, Waynesville, Mo. 65583. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
MARGARET E. CHAMBERLAIN
Margaret E. Chamberlain, 67, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Cox Medical South, Springfield, Mo., after a short illness.
Mrs. Chamberlain moved from Independence to Kirbyville, Mo. in 1988. She was a retired environmental service worker for the Park Lane Medical Center, Independence. She was a member of the Community Church in Kirbyville, Skaggs Auxiliary and Skaggs Hospital in Branson, Mo.
Survivors include four daughters, Susan Marquez and Jane Blann, Independence; Lynda Steele, Springfield, Mo., and Sandra Piveral, Kirbyville, Mo.; one son, Alan Chamberlain, Independence; one brother, James Crull of New Braunfels, Texas, eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Ozarks Memorial Park cemetery, Branson, Mo. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Snapp`s Ozarks Memorial Park Funeral Home in Branson. Memorials maybe made to the Community Church in Kirbyville, Mo.
CLAYTON S. COOPER
Clayton Scott Cooper, 11-month-old son of Mark and Tracy (Woodruff) Cooper, Raytown, died Friday, March 13, 1998.
Clayton was born April 2, 1997, in Kansas City.
His survivors also include a brother, Cole Cooper of the home; maternal grandparents, Bill and Doris Woodruff, Mexico, Mo.; paternal grandparents, Bill and Lydia Watson, Kansas City, and Sam Cooper, Grandview, Mo.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Salem cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the cardiology unit of Chilren`s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City.
ALBERT ESPOSITO
Albert "Mickey" Esposito, 52, Westwood, Kan., died Thursday, March 12, 1988, at his home.
He was born March 25, 1945, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a member of the RLDS Church.Survivors include his wife, Donalin, of the home; four sons, Matthew D. Esposito, Des Moines, Iowa, Mark A.T. Esposito, Charleston, W.V., Mikilin M. Greenwood, Sedalia, Mo. and Daniel M.J. Esposito, Pittsburg, Kan.; and two sisters, Margene Oliviera, Henderson, Nev., and Linda McClenathan, Phoenix, Ariz.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Midtown Chapel in Independence.
STEVEN J. HOOPER
Steven Joseph Hooper, 38, Lake Lotawana, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Hooper was born Oct. 17, 1959, in Kansas City. He attended Hickman High School in Kansas City and Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Jo Hooper, Lake Latawana; his father, Richard C. Hooper, Grandview; one sister, Melissa A. Beaty, Cripple Creek, Colo.; one brother, Michael W. Hooper, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; his maternal grandmother, Shirley M. Dostal, Ozark, Mo.; two nices and two nephews; two step sisters Debbie Slattery, Kansas City, and Donna Jo Mansfield, Kansas City, Kan.; and one step brother, Richard Jarrett, Wichita, Kan.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Langsford Funeral Home in Lee`s Summit. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. MALINDA R. ORR
ERNEST ORR
Malinda Ruth Orr, 77, Independence, died Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center. Ernest Orr, 85, Independence, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Orr was born March 25, 1920, in Morrilton, Ark., and had lived in Independence since 1952. She retired in 1986 as a clerical worker for the Kansas City Public Schools. She was a member of the Budd Park Christian Church, Kansas City.
Mr. Orr was born Nov. 3, 1912, in Center Ridge, Ark., and had lived in Independence since 1952. He had worked in the maintenance department of the Kansas City School District until retiring in 1978.
Their survivors include one son, James E. "Jim" Orr, Independence; a daughter, Tina Elms, Carpentersville, Ill.; and four granddaughters, Lori Orr, Angie Orr, Tina Potter and Debbie Goettel, a grandson, Chuckie Elms; and four great-grandchildren.Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Chapel.
HAZEL L. PATTERSON
Hazel L. Patterson, 85, Independence, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at the Woodbine Health Care, Gladstone, Mo.
Mrs. Patterson was born July 21, 1912, in Glenwood, Mo., and had lived in Washington D.C., from 1931 to 1957 before moving to Independence. She was a legal secretary for the FDIC. She was a member of St. Mark`s United Methodist Church.
Her survivors include a son, Mike Patterson, Remond, Wash.; a brother, John Lile, Kirksville, Mo.; four sisters, Freda Early and Grace Porter, both of Kansas City, Mary Copeland, Bowie, Texas, and Lillian Emmert, LaCrosse, Wis.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel; cremation. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
JAMES H. HOWE
James H. Howe, 78, Independence, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Howe was born March 8, 1921, in Kearney, Neb., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a maintenance worker for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years, retiring in 1985, and a member of the Federal Employee's Club. He was also a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Howe.
His survivors include two sons, James Kevin Howe and Dean E. Howe, both of Independence; two brothers, Andy Howe and Russell Howe, both of Kearney; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the New Walnut Park RLDS Church; cremation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
JOSEPH M. PALERMO
Joseph Michael Palermo, 77, Independence, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999.
Mr. Palermo was born Feb. 15, 1922, in St. Louis. He served in the Air Force during World War II and flew 34 missions over Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and three Oak Leaf Clusters. He founded the Independence Chapter of the Missouri Right to Life organization, and was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus and American Legion 405.
His survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret Palermo; five children and their spouses, Mark and Mary Palermo, St. Louis, Mary and Tim Kruse, John and Kathy Palermo, Dave and Karen Palermo, and Jane and Bruce Ford, all of the Kansas City area; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters; and three brothers.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 3736 Lee's Summit Road. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Catholic cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus service. KATHLEEN M. PUHR
Kathleen M. Puhr, 72, Kansas City, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Puhr was born Feb. 9, 1927, in Kansas City. She was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church. She taught dance, tap, ballet and belly dancing for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Puhr Sr., in February 1999, and a son, Richard Puhr in 1994.
Her survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Walter L. Puhr Jr., and Kathryn Puhr; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and David Stewart, Kansas City; a daughter-in-law, Alicia Puhr, Olathe, Kan.; an uncle, Joseph Leahy; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 3736 Lee's Summit Road, Independence. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where the prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of America Hospice.
PAUL J. QUICK
Paul J. Quick, 71, Gravois Mills, formerly of Independence, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Health Center, Jefferson City.
Mr. Quick was born Aug. 28, 1927, in Warsaw, Mo. He was a truck driver for Time D.C. Freightline in Kansas City, and was a member of the Teamsters Local 41, Kansas City. He was a U.S. veteran of the Army and Navy and was a member of the Zack Wheat American Legion Post 624, Sunrise Beach. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Windsor, Mo. He was a member of the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife, Wilma J. Quick of the home; a son, Eddie Quick, Windsor; a daughter, Pam Bartlett, Leesville; three stepdaughters, Barbara Gatewood, Sunrise Beach, Glenda Brown, Independence, and Lorna Bybee, Jefferson City; a brother, Chester Elwood Quick, California; two sisters, Alice Dalton, Tonganoxie, Kan., and Mable Jane Fairchild, Oklahoma City, Okla.; six grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Kidwell-Garber Laurie-Sunrise Beach Chapel, Laurie, Mo. Military honors and interment will be in the Garber Memorial Estates cemetery, Laurie. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Sunrise Beach.
