BURTON S. GAHM
Burton S. Gahm, 87, Lee's Summit, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the John Knox Village Care Center, Lee's Summit.
Mr. Gahm was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Valley Falls, Kan., and had lived in Lee's Summit for more than 20 years. He was an auditor for the U.S. government and owned and operated the Brookside Toy and Party Shop in Kansas City for many years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lee's Summit. His first wife, Louise Gahm, died in 1985.
His survivors include his wife, Mildred Gahm of John Knox Village.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. The family suggests contributions, in his memory, to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
ARIE M. GRAVENDIJK
Arie Michiel Gravendijk, 92, Oak Grove, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at St. Mary's Manor in Blue Springs.
Mr. Gravendijk was born Sept. 20, 1906, in Amsterdam, Holland, and lived in Holland for 24 years, and Aruba, Netherlands, for 32 years, moving to Oak Grove in 1963. He was an accountant for the Standard Oil Co. in Aruba for 32 years, retiring in 1963.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Alice Gravendijk of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Susanne and Steve Wirth, Kankakee, Ill.; a sister, Willie Behrens, Gouda, Holland; and two granddaughters, Amy and Julie Wirth.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Mecklin cemetery, north of Oak Grove. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Church of Jesus Christ, Oak Grove Restoration Branch.
MARJORIE PECK
Marjorie Peck, 82, Camdenton, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.
Mrs. Peck was born March 10, 1916, in Centerville, Iowa, and lived in Independence before moving to Camdenton 10 years ago. She retired from the Department of Revenue in 1973, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and was a Presbyterian by faith. Her husband, Lynne E. Peck, died in 1988.
Her survivors include a son, Bob L. Peck, Roach Mo.; a daughter, Lynnette Kirkham, Kansas City; three grandchildren, William Peck, Michael Kirkham and Kali Boatright; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
PEARL L. BEAL
Pearl L. Beal, 64, Kansas City, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Beal was born Aug. 18, 1934, in Stover, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City since 1958. She was self-employed and was the owner/operator of Pearl's Cleaning Service. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Branstetter in 1992.
Her survivors include her husband, Sanford Beal Jr., Kansas City; three sons, Clyde Branstetter, Humansville, Mo., Eugene Branstetter, Stockton, Mo., and Michael Beal, Lexington, Mo.; two daughters, Fern Ricketts, Oak Grove, and Tammy Hartman, Kansas City; a brother, Calvin Branch, Stover; a sister, Nellie Roberts, Independence; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
MILDRED R. BINDER
Mildred R. Binder, 88, Santa Maria, Calif., formerly of Independence, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998.
Mrs. Binder was born June 27, 1910, in Independence. She had worked for Montgomery Ward for more than 30 years. She was a member of Orient Chapter 491 of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Social Order of Beauceant, and a past Queen of Paran Temple of the Daughters of the Nile. Her husband, David T. Binder, died in 1991.
Her survivors include two daughters, Nancy Ruth Converse, Santa Maria, Calif., and Rosslyn Ann Lewis, Vicksburg, Miss.; four grandchildren, David Binder Lewis, Jay Earl Lewis, Paul Andrew Lewis and Marianne Shade; six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Mount Moriah & Freeman Chapel, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the Shrine Hospital.
LOLA D. CARBAUGH
Lola Dixie Carbaugh, 85, Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at Alpine North.
Mrs. Carbaugh was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Carroll County, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Medical Corps. She was a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Forrest Carbaugh, died in 1995.
Her survivors include a sister, Edith Leibold, Independence; two brothers, Roy Atkinson, Bakersfield, Calif., and Marshall Atkinson, Kansas City; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
SCOTT W. CLARKE
Scott William Clarke, 39, Independence, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Clarke was born Dec. 12, 1958, in Terre Haute, Ind. He worked for both O'Dell Tractors of Independence, and as a newspaper carrier for the Kansas City Star for the past five years. He was a 1978 graduate of Blue Springs High School, and a member of the Praise Tabernacle Church of God, Independence.
His survivors include his wife, Gay Clarke, a son, Daniel Scott Clarke, and three daughters, Amber Clarke, Brooke Clarke and Catrina Clarke, all of the home; his parents, Donald and Janice Clarke, Punta Gorda, Fla.; two brothers, Ron Clarke, El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Brad Clarke, Lee's Summit; and a sister, Dona Boley, Blue Springs.
Services were today at the church. Burial was in Hopewell cemetery, Montrose, Mo. FLORENCE M. GRABSKE
Florence M. Grabske, 92, Independence, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Grabske was born May 14, 1906, in Nodaway County, Mo., and had lived in Independence since 1917. She had been a registered nurse for more than 40 years, and had worked at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. She was a graduate of William Chrisman High School, a member of The Groves RLDS congregation, and a former member of the RLDS Second Church congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul Grabske.
Her survivors include a sister, Mary A. Barnhard, Independence; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at The Groves Chapel. Private graveside burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. VICTOR L. KESSLER
Victor L. Kessler, 85, Independence, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at the Independence Regional Extended Care Center.
Mr. Kessler was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Canton, Ohio, and lived in Canton until moving to Independence in 1989. He was a machinist and retired from Central Allied Enterprises in 1980. He was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School, where he played football from 1930 to 1932. He was an avid hunter and marksman, and a lifetime member of the Canton McKinley Rifle and Pistol Club. He was a member of St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church.
His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Maxine Long Kessler of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Karen Kessler, Salt Lake City, and Richard and Carolyn Kessler, Independence; a brother, Leland J. Kessler, Canton; two grandchildren, Christy and Patrick Kessler of Independence; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 8 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.
FRANCES J. TAYLOR
Frances J. Taylor, 78, Temple Terrace, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.
Mrs. Taylor was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. She just recently moved to Florida. She worked for the Vendo Co. for many years, then joined her daughter's family owned business. She was a 38-year member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and currently belonged to the Gamma Masters Chapter. She was a former city council president and chapter president with the sorority. She attended the First Baptist Church of Independence. Her husband, Marvin W. Taylor, died in 1982.
Her survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Robert Bailey, Sun City, Calif., and Sharon and Peter Kuehnlein, Temple Terrace; a sister, Bettie Sincox, Independence; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Children's Mercy Hospital.
RUTH A. DENNIS-STEINER
Ruth A. Dennis-Steiner, 62, East Moline, Ill., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Dennis-Steiner was born May 9, 1936, in East Moline, and lived in Independence approximately 20 years, before returning to East Moline. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Alexandria Williams.
Her survivors include her husband, Clifford Steiner of the home; five children and their spouses, Denise and Jay Williams, Oak Grove, April Dennis, and Mary Ann and Andre Smith of East Moline, William Berthoud Jr. and Pam Berthoud, Silvis, Ill., and Richard and Bertha Berthoud, Cordova, Ill.; five stepchildren and their spouses, Steve and Teresa Dennis, Oak Grove, Terri and Mark Schimmer, Blue Springs, Tammy Dennis and Scott Dennis of Virginia Beach, Va., and Bill Dennis, Grandview; two sisters, Collette Schnoor, Orion, Ill., and Helen Zeroth, Rock Island, Ill.; and 21 grandchildren.
Services were today at the Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, Ill.
HERBERT J. MURRAY SR.
Herbert J. Murray Sr., 97, Independence, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Murray was born Aug. 22, 1900, in Henrietta, Mo. He was a carpet layer, and past president of the Kansas City Carpet Layers Union. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence, and was a Mason and Shriner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Avnes A. Duncan Murray in 1985, and his daughter, Helen Shult.
His survivors include one son, the Rev. Herbert J. Murray Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.; one brother, Clifford Murray, Searcy, Ark.; one sister, Blanche Litchfield, Tucson, Ariz.; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Grandview cemetery, Albany, Mo. Friends may call after noon Friday at the Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany, Mo., where the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m.
SHERMAN L. STANLEY
Sherman L. Stanley, 74, Independence, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Stanley was born May 26, 1924, in Horton, Kan. He was an Army veteran, serving in Germany during World War II, and was a member of the 537th Engineer Light Pontoon Company.
His survivors include one sister, Lousie Gilliland, Federal Way, Wash.; and three brothers, Lawrence Stanley, St. Joseph, Mo., Daniel Stanley, Kansas City, and Jack Stanley, Omack, Wash.
Graveside services were Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Arrangements were under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.
FERN WINEGAR AND JACK D. WINEGAR
Fern Darnell Winegar of Independence died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, and Jack D. Winegar of Independence died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998.
Mrs. Winegar was born Feb. 3, 1915, in Ordway, Colo., and she and her husband lived in Washington, Oregon and California before returning to Independence in 1974. She worked outside the home for awhile and was a homemaker.
She is survived by one sister, Martha Darnell of Kansas City.
Mr. Winegar was born Oct. 5, 1915, in Caldwell, Idaho. He worked for many years as a route man (milk, bread, etc.). He also worked for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for a time, and later was a window washer, retiring in 1994. He served in the Navy during World War II.
His survivors include one brother, William Winegar, and two sisters, Marjorie Farquhar and Robert Grunke, all of Albuquerque.
They are survived by two sons, Donald Jack Winegar, Saugus, Calif., and David William Winegar, Independence; one daughter, Sharon Kay Bird, Saugus; 19 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Washington cemetery.
