HOLLIS J. VERMILLION
Hollis Jean Vermillion, 45, Belton, Mo., died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at the Grandview Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Vermillion was born Dec. 13, 1952, in Adrian, Mo., and was a lifelong area resident.
Her survivors include her parents, George and Winifred Burton, Independence; four brothers, David Burton and Paul Burton, both of Kansas City, Stephen Burton, Mountain View, Calif., and Gary Burton, Independence; and a sister, Melissa Fink, Kansas City.
Burial will be at 2 today at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
Dr. Elizabeth K. "Liz" or "Lizzie Kate" Baranowski
Dr. Elizabeth K. "Liz" or "Lizzie Kate" Baranowski, Woodland, Calif., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at her home.
Dr. Baranowski was born in Milan, Mo., and had attended the Blue Springs schools and graduated from Barstow Girl's School. She graduated from the University of Health Sciences, Kansas City, and established her medical practice in Woodland. She belonged to many professional and civic organizations including the George Edward Pickett Chapter 1316, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Kansas City, and a former member of the Blue Springs Chapter of the DAR. She was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society.
Her survivors include her mother, Francis Eloise Vaughn, Lake Tapawingo; two sisters, Margaret Francis Pointelin, St. Joseph, Mo., and Candy Connealy, Leawood, Kan.; two brothers, Dr. Joe B. Vaughn, Warrensburg, and James P.R. Baranowski, Kansas City; five nieces and nephews and her grandfather, B. Hudgins, Stuart, Fla.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Nativity Catholic Church, 119th and Mission, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a UDC Scholarship Fund, American Cancer Society, in care of Ken Stewart, Memorial Chairman, 2134 S.W. Park Ave., Blue Springs, Mo. 64015, or to Hospice.
WALTER J. CONWAY
Walter Joseph Conway, 73, Independence, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Conway was born Sept. 22, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn. He re-tired as assistant director at Psychiatric Services for the state of Missouri in 1987 after 23 years of service. He was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Julia Ann Conway of the home; four sons, Stephen Joseph Conway, Chicago, Charles Mark Conway, San Diego, Calif., Jonathan Paul Conway, Waldorf, Md., and Timothy Wayne Conway, Gainesville, Fla.; one daughter, ChrisAnn Conway, Linn, Mo.; one brother, Kyle Conway, Independence; two sisters, Patricia Lindamood, San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Phyllis Christenson, Blue Springs; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the RLDS Temple, 201 S. River Blvd. at Lexington Avenue. Use the Lexington entrance. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice, 3100 N.E. 83rd St., Suite 2300, Kansas City, Mo. 64119. Arrangements are under the direction of the Speaks Midtown Chapel.
LIBBIE M. FAIRFIELD
Libbie Marie Fairfield, 99, Independence, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Fairfield was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Linwood, Neb. She was a homemaker, and a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, .
Her survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Sam; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Carol and Terry and Pam; two sisters, Rose Swope and Norma Knowlton; one brother, Ernie Barcel; six grandchildren, Anthony, Michelle, Lisa, Steven, Joey, Jonathan and Jordan; and great-grandchildren, Michael David, Sydney, Logan and Devan.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
LORRAINE L. KINSEY
Lorraine Lydia Kinsey, 83, Independence, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Kinsey was born April 6, 1915, in St. Louis. She retired from Armco Steel after 20 years of service. She had been a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church since 1974 and was active in many senior activities and organizations. Her husband, Ralph W. Kinsey, died in Feb-ruary 1999.
Her survivors include one son, John Scott Kinsey, Mebane, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Lynette Kinsey and John Kinsey II.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church, 17200 E. 39th St. Burial will be in Concordia cemetery, St. Louis. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church.
DR. JIM V. RICHERSON
Dr. Jim Vernon Richerson, 55, Alpine, Texas, formerly of Independence, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Big Bend Memorial Center in Alpine.
Dr. Richerson was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Bosier City, La. He was a 1961 graduate of William Chrisman High School, earned his bachelor and master of Science degrees from the University of Missouri, and his doctorate from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a research scientist and has been a professor of biology at Sul Ross State University in Alpine since September 1979, and was currently serving as the Biology Department chairman.
His survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Brewen Richerson of the home; one daughter, Tara Richerson Platten, Bremerton, Wash.; and his mother, Mayre Richerson, Independence.
A memorial reception will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to either the Biology Endowment or Arts and Sciences Endowment, Sul Ross State University, President's Office, Alpine, Texas 79830.
MARY G. SANDRIDGE
Mary Geneva Sandridge, 100, Raytown, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the Cedar Valley Care Center.
Ms. Sandridge was born Sept. 12, 1898, in Calhoun, Mo., and moved to this area in 1917. She worked in the accounting field with Armour and Co. for 19 years, Harris-Uphand Bookkeepers for 12 years, Paramount Pictures for 10 years, and after her retirement, for Independence Judge Brady for 10 years. She was a member of the Raytown Christian Church and the National Society of Magna Charta Dames, a charter member of the Kansas City Business Women's Association and Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, a national member of the Jamestown Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and an honorary member of the National Genealogical Society.
Her survivors include two nephews, James Hall and A.T. Hall; one niece, Betty Hall, Hermann, Mo.; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; four great-great-nieces; and three great-great-nephews.
Graveside services were today at Mount Washington cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Raytown Christian Church, 6108 Blue Ridge Blvd. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sheil Colonial Funeral Home, Raytown.
OLA SUTTON
Ola Hickcox Sutton, 88, Kansas City, North, formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Menorah Medical Center.
Mrs. Sutton was born July 25, 1910, in California, Mo. She was a graduate of Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, and received her master's degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She taught school for 47 years, many of those at Mount Washington School, retiring from the Kansas City School District in 1975. She was a member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Kansas City, North, and was a life-member of the Missouri State Teacher's Association, University Women, and the Harry S. Truman Library Institute. Her husband, Andrew J. Sutton, died in1964.
Her survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Gail Scott, Jefferson City, and Mary Louis F. Drackert, Kansas City; a brother-in-law, Joseph Stokes, Jefferson City; three nephews, Brent Scott, Thomas Stokes and Louis J. Drackert; and five nieces, Gaylen Hoover, Rita LeVota, Margaret Ann MacLeod, Deborah J. Lightner and Dolores Laubach.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
WAYNE E. WILLIAMS
Wayne Ellsworth Williams, 75, Blue Springs, died Saturday Feb. 27, 1923, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Williams was born Dec. 28, 1923, in Albia, Iowa. He worked for Social Security at the downtown office an an administrator. He was a member of the Oak Grove Assembly of God. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, LaVonna Williams, Blue Springs; his daughter, Barbara A. Giertz, Blue Springs; two sons, David Williams, Olathe, Kan., and Michael Williams, Overland Park, Kan.; three sisters, Priscilla gray, Corning, Iowa, Evie Haworth, Renton, Wash., and Mary Kendall, San Andres, Calif.; three brothers, Jack Williams, Kansas City, Kan., Paul Williams, Seattle, Wash., and Richard Williams, Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, David Williams Jr., James Giertz, Kelly and Lindsay Williams; and two great-grandchildren, Kassidy and Kailyn Giertz.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in the Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Grove Assembly of God.
RUTH K. ALLEE
Ruth Katherine Allee, 89, Blue Springs, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at St. Mary`s Manor in Blue Springs.
Mrs. Allee was born Nov. 25, 1908, in Kansas City, and had lived in this area most of her life. She moved to St. Mary`s Manor two years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Raytown. Her husband, Ernest E. Allee, died in 1996.
Her survivors include two sons, George Ham, Independence, and Richard Ham, Lee`s Summit; a sister-in-law, Mary Belle Merker, and a niece, Helen Gray, both of Overland Park, Kan.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
SANDY S. SHIGEMURA
Sandy S. Shigemura, 86, Independence, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Shigemura was born May 2, 1912, in Waipahu, Hawaii, lived in California, and was interred at a relocation center in Colorado during World War II, before moving to Kansas City. He worked for Corn Products International for 30 years, retiring as a plant operator in 1975. He was an avid golfer.
His survivors include his wife of 63 years, Doris Shigemura of the home; his children and their spouses, Kay and Ed Crabtree, Lebanon, Mo., Dennis and Janet Shigemura, Buckner, Carol and Jan Underwood, Bridgeville, Pa., and Susan and Alan Moss, Raytown; four sisters, Mikiko Hirohata, Jane Ayako Todo, Grace Kyoko Shigemura and Sumiko Kubota, all of Hawaii; grandchildren, Rob, Dennis and Richard Crabtree, Robin and Rachel Shigemura, Jay and Julian Underwood, and Jason and Sara Moss; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Cremation. Visitation will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, followed by a memorial services at 5 p.m. at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Fairmount Lions Club, 10505 E. Eighth St., Independence, Mo. 64053.
JOHN W. "J.W." ARMSTRONG
John William "J.W." Armstrong, 85, Salisbury, Mo., died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Chariton Park Care Center.
Mr. Armstrong was born April 30, 1912, in Salisbury, and was a lifelong Salisburyresident. He was an electrician for the city of Salisbury for many years, and was also a farmer. He was a member of the Salisbury United Methodist Church, Huntsville 30 A.M.&.A.F. Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite in Columbia and the AraratShrine Temple in Kansas City. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a 50-year member of the Modern Woodmen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aletha Bayne Armstrong.
His survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Watts, Independence; one granddaughter, Terri Rae Yost; and two great-grandchildren, Michael Allen Yost and Rachael Aletha Yost.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Berry Funeral Home, Salisbury. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Moberly, Mo. Friendsmay call from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 7:30. JAMES T. FRISBIE
James Theodore Frisbie, 95, Harrisonville, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Friday, Feb.20, 1998, at Camden Health Center, Harrisonville.
Mr. Frisbie was born Sept. 10, 1902, in Cherokee County, Kan., and lived in Independence before moving to Harrisonville. He was retired from Sheffield Steel, and had worked in the Maintenance Department of the Independence Post Office.
He is survived by a son, Darrell Frisbie of Florida.
Services were today at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel; cremation.
LOTTIE M. GIBLER
Lottie Mae Gibler, 93, Grain Valley, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at the Jefferson Health Care Center, Lee`s Summit.
Mrs. Gibler was born March 4, 1904, in Sturgeon, Mo., and had lived in Grain Valley for 60 years. She was an orchard boss for Storms Orchard, cooked at various restaurants in Eastern Jackson County and for the Grain Valley School District. She also had been a nanny for 10 years. She was a member of the Grain Valley Christian Church and the Ladies Aid at the church, and had participated in many senior citizens groups. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Brooks Gibler Sr. in 1960, two sons, Clinton B. Gibler Jr. in 1983 and Kenneth Gibler in 1990, and a great-grandson, John Taylor Leavell in 1991.
Her survivors include three sons, Malcolm Gibler, Independence, MauriceGibler, Bates City, and Denny Gibler, Lee`s Summit; two daughters, Kay Leavell, Tarsney Lakes, Mo., and Louise Huggins, Belton, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
VIOLET F. "VI" HARGIS
Violet F. "Vi" Hargis, 81, Carthage, Mo., died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at a Carthage nursing home.
Mrs. Hargis was born July 29, 1916, in Arkansas, and lived in Carthage before moving to Whittier, Calif. She returned to Carthage in 1972. She was a realtor for several years and was the owner and broker of Quaker Realty in Whittier. She attended the First United Methodist Church, Carthage, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Abe Hargis in 1986 and two sons.
Her survivors include a son, Daniel Wade, Independence; a daughter, Jodie Iams, Oak Grove; two sisters, Marjorie Reed, Carthage, and Mary Comer, Joplin, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services were today at the Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Burial was in Park cemetery, Carthage. The family suggests contributions to the Kidney Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
