JOHN A. BERSUCH JR.
John A. Bersuch Jr., 70, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Bersuch was a Navy veteran of World War II.
His survivors include two sons, Harold E. Bersuch, Kansas City, and John R. Bersuch; a daughter, Donna J. Sellers, Lawson, Mo.; a brother, Don Bersuch, Grandview; a sister, Vivian Beatty, Fresno, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. There will be no memorial services. Cremation with inurement at Longview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to American Legion Post 779, 11600 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. 64134.
ERNESTE. CASE
Ernest E. Case, 92, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Case had lived in the Independence area for 58 years. He retired from the General Motors Leeds Assembly Plant in 1965. His wife, Minnie Helen Case, died in 1989.
His survivors include two sons, Ernest D. Case, Independence, and Ralph W. Case, Belton, Mo.; two brothers, Virgil Case, Nebraska, and Harold Case, Cole Camp, Mo.; a sister, Edna Bullard, Lee`s Summit; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
CHARLIE S. CERVANTES
Charlie Sue Cervantes, 75, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Cervantes was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Whitewright, Texas. She had worked in the restaurant business for 62 years throughout the Midwest, including Texas, Oklahoma and on the West Coast. She was currently the senior server at the Colony Steak House and the Lobster Pot. She was involved in ownership and management at La Louisiane Restaurant, The Kontiki Room, and Jimmy and Mary`s Steak House.
Her survivors include a son, Billy Miller, Oak Grove; two grandchildren, Terrie Sue Miller of the home, and Richard William Miller, Independence; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Miller.
Private services will be Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Longview Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Longview Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to Children`s Mercy Hospital.
EDNA N. COMER
Edna N. Comer, 87, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Comer was born Aug. 17, 1910, in Oklahoma and had lived in this area most of her life. She was an executive housekeeper of several Kansas City hotels for 30 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence.
Her survivors include a daughter, Norma J. Smith, Independence; two sisters, Elsie Shaffer, Marshall, Okla., and Juanita Holsinger, Perkins, Okla.; a granddaughter, Kathleen Pence, Blue Springs; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
WILMA J. GREEN
Wilma Jean Green, 68, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Green was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Braymer, Mo. She was a sales clerk for J.C. Penney for 15 years before she retired. She was past matron of Raytown Chapter 97 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine, Order of Beauceant, Daughters of the Nile and the Ararat Needle Guild.
Her survivors include her husband of 50 years, Chriss L. Green Jr. of the home; two sons, Michael E. Green, Richmond, Mo., and Gerald Green, Independence; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.
FLORA E. MOON Flora Evelyn Moon, 91, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Moon was born May 5, 1906, in Oakville, Iowa. She retired in 1972 as owner/operator of Missouri Embroidery Works in Kansas City, and was a member of the Assembly of God Church at the Lake of the Ozarks. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Bressman and Wilbur Moon, ason, Carl Bressman, and two grandsons.
Her survivors include three sons, Floyd Bressman, Independence, Henry Bressman, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and John Bressman, Belton, Mo.; four daughters, Janie Salisbury, Wanda Rice and Valveria Hathaway, all of Independence, and Cynthia Carson, Kansas City; a brother, Orland Stodgell, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a sister, Valveria Morris, Independence; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Serviceswill be 1 p.m. Thursday at the D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
O. FAYE THOMAS
O. Faye Thomas, 88, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Thomas was born in Formoso, Kan., and had lived in Independence for the last 50 years. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Medical Center of Independence from 1970 to 1971 and from 1983 to 1994. She had been very active in the MCI auxiliary, and was an ombudsman for nursing homes in the state of Missouri. She was a past member of the Independence PTA, and had been involved in numerous state and local civic organizations for many years. She was a charter member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Her husband, Robert M. Thomas, died in 1980.
Her survivors include two daughters, Sharon Reynolds, Kansas City, and Pam Fulmer, Independence; four grandchildren, Greg Reynolds, Chris Reynolds, Stacy Fulmer and Amy Miller; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial willbe in Burr Oak (Kan.) cemetery, Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Medical Center of Independence Scholarship Fund.
CHRISTINE M. WALLACE
Christine Marion Wallace, 89, Denver, formerly of Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Briarwood Nursing Home in Denver.
Mrs. Wallace was the sister-in-law of Harry S. Truman and the last surviving immediate family member of the former president`s generation. She was born May 18, 1908, in Springfield, Ill., and lived in Kansas City and Independence before moving to Denver. She also lived in Albuquerque, N.M., from 1950 to 1955. On July 27, 1933, she married
David Frederick "Fred"Wallace, the youngest brother of Bess Wallace Truman. After moving to Denver, she and her husband were first associated with the FHA and, later, an officer of Temple Buell`s architecture firm. She worked for the Colorado Highway Department until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1957, and a daughter, Marian Wallace Brasher in 1984.
Her survivors include her children, Maryland "Margo" and David of Los Angeles; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services followed by internment will be held March 7 at St. Matthew`s Episcopal Church, Pacific Palisades, Calif.
MARIE R. WATSON
Marie Ruth Watson, 96, Independence, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998. Mrs. Watson was born Jan. 4, 1902, and had lived in Independence most of her life. She co-owned and operated Cedar Crest Farms for many years with her late husband, Edward T. Watson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Watson.
Her survivors include three daughters, Rita Lamb and Patricia Schwietz, both of Independence, and Virginia Brady, Kansas City; a son, Ed Watson, San Diego, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary`s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel, where the rosary will be said. The family suggests contributions to the church.
MICHAEL L. KARNER
Michael Louis Karner, 87, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mr. Karner was born May 27, 1910, in Kansas City. He was a salesman. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had also served in the National Guard for six years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 499, Blue Springs and the ROTC. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Theresa Karner on June 19, 1997.
His survivors include three daughters, Theresa Liles, Odessa, Margaret Shaw, Blue Springs, and Geraldine Smith, Pleasant Hill; a sister, Ann Freeman, Kansas City; and two brothers, Frank Karner, Blue Springs, and Joe Karner, Kansas City.
There are no services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.
WENDY G. CARTER WATKINS
Wendy G. Carter Watkins, 34, Wintergarden, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at a hospital in Wintergarden.
Mrs. Watkins was born Dec. 12, 1963, in Independence, and had lived in Independence until moving to Florida in 1997.
She was a homemaker.
Her survivors include her husband, Kenny Watkins, two sons, Jeffrey Carter and Alex Carter, all of Wintergarden; her mother and stepfather, Pauline Schaller and Richard Schaller, both of Belton; four sisters, Tonnie Moore, Orlando, Fla., Diane Voyles, Fort Myers, Fla., Debbie Kolberg, Wright City, Mo., and Tammy Smith, Independence; and a brother, Farron Jones, Wright City, Mo.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Charity Missionary Baptist Church, 9300 Independence Ave., Independence. Cremation, with burial in Belton at a later date. Flowers will be accepted at the church Saturday morning. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
HARRY L. BOWLING
Harry L. Bowling, 69, Independence, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at the VA Medical Center.
Mr. Bowling was born May 31, 1928, in Kansas City. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Sheffield Masonic Lodge 625 AF & AM. He was a supervisor for Hudson Oil Co. for 16 years and a supervisor at Koch Marketing for 20 years.
His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mabel Bowling; a daughter, Linda Wilson; a son, Tim Bowling; two sisters, Bessie Oziah and Artie Lambrecht; and a granddaughter, Lisa Kincaid.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Charter Funerals/Earp & Sons Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at the chapel, where Masonic services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.
CATHERINE L. BRIDGES
Catherine L. Bridges, 72, Sugar Creek, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Bridges was born June 28, 1925, in Kansas City. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Eagle Lodge 385 and Al-Non of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Lee Bridges, a son, Floyd Bridges, and a grandson, Timothy W. Hightower.
Her survivors include a son, Clarence D. Bridges, Stockton, Mo.; two daughters, Jo Ann Blankenship and Maxine Hightower, both of Sugar Creek; a sister, Margarette Wolf, Independence; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hinton-Gibler Funeral Home, Raytown. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
ESTHER A. FRANCISKATO
Esther Adele Franciskato, 82, Independence, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Franciskato was born Nov. 29, 1915, in Chamois, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area for most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Luke`s United Church of Christ, Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Franciskato in 1994.
Her survivors include a daughter, Alberta Franciskato, two sons, Larry Franciskato and David Franciskato, all of Independence; three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the St. Luke`s United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.
BLANCHE E. FREY
Blanche E. Frey, 92, Independence, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Frey was born Nov. 1, 1905, in Independence, and was a lifelong Independence resident. She was a school teacher and later worked as a receptionist for Dr. Marlo Morgan. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonya Myers is 1994, and a son, Clayton Jenkins in 1951.
Her survivors include a daughter, Wanda E. Smith, Independence; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Salem cemetery.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
ROBERT M. LINDSAY
Robert M. "Bob" Lindsay, 73, Branson, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson.
Mr. Lindsay was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Jamesport, Mo., and had lived in Independence during his school years. He played baseball for the Ben Johnson League. He earned a bachelor`s degree in business administration from Parkville College. He worked for the Civil Service for 15 years, serving as a commissary officer. He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years. He was the youngest officer to command in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II and he served in the Chosin Resevoir Battle in the Korean War. He was awarded two silver stars and a bronze star for his service. He was a member of the Branson United Methodist Church and president of the Waymakers Sunday school class.
He was past president of TROA, a retired officers organization and member of "Chosin Few." He was also a member of the Branson Masonic Lodge No. 587 AF & AM.
His survivors include his wife, Margaret "Peg" Lindsay of the home; a daughter, Desra Anne Balock, Leavenworth, Kan.; a son, Mark Joseph Lindsay, Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren, Rob and Chris, Ryan, Matthew and Stephanie.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Branson United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Whelchel Funeral Chapel in Branson. Burial with full military honors will be at a later date in the Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Family Life Center of the church or to the American Cancer Society.
