VICTOR R. TALCOTT
Victor Riley Talcott, 82, Sun City, Ariz., died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Talcott was born in Dow City, Iowa. He was an electrician and mechanical supervisor for the J.C. Nichols Co. for 35 years. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He attended Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, and Iowa State University. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mildred Carlile Talcott.
His survivors include four sons, Kenneth and David, both of Olathe, Kan., Lynn of Blue Springs, and Lynden of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Harold of Sun City, and Ronald of Lee's Summit; two sisters, Doris Gabriel, Joplin, Mo., and Pauline Jennings, Independence; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Olathe RLDS Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Leukemia Society of America or Hospice Services of Olathe Medical Center.
LELA BROOKS
Lela Brooks, 87, Independence, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, Mo.
Mrs. Brooks was born Dec. 19, 1910, in Joplin, and had lived most of her life in Joplin before moving to Independence in 1971. For 30 years, until 1965, she and her husband, Arthur Brooks, owned and operated the former Eastside Ice and Fuel Co. She was also a sales clerk at several stores in Independence, including Elko Camera Store and Venture Department Store, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Joplin and the Walnut Park Congregation in Independence. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the church`s professional women`s organization. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Logan Dodge in 1934 and her second husband, Arthur Floyd Brooks in 1958.
Her survivors include a daughter, Doris Jean Heath, Independence; a son, Douglas Brooks, Joplin; two stepsons, Roy Brooks, Independence, and Jim Brooks, Joplin; a stepdaughter, Ruby Hunt, Payson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary, Joplin. Interment will be in Osborne Memorial cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. The family will be at the home of the son, Douglas Brooks at 3724 Chipmunk Dr., Joplin, Mo. A memorial service will also be in Independence at a later date.
ELMER L. KRIDER
Elmer Levi Krider, 63, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at the Regency Care Center in Independence.
Mr. Krider ws born in Ava, Mo., and had lived in the Independence area for the last 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and he was a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for many years. He was a member of the VFW Post 1000.
His survivors include two brothers, Buck Krider, Weableau, Mo., and Paul Krider, Bradyville, Iowa; five sisters, Burlene Parker, Hannibal, Mo., Donna Ward, Millington, Tenn., Frankie Brodhacker, Hannibal, Mo., Sue Greenway, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Penny Swank, Hannibal; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Heart of America Hospice Program, 9229 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Mo. 64114.
THOMAS H. "TOM" WRAY
Thomas H. "Tom" Wray, 50, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Wray was born July 27, 1948, in Tiptonville, Tenn. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, working for many years at the main branch in Independence. He was a Navy veteran, and a member of the Dudes Car Club.
His survivors include his wife, Martha Wray of the home; three daughters, Lisa Wray, Tami Hill and Kim Wray, one grandson, Jacob Hill, and one sister, Janis Goodall, all of Turner, Kan.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Swan Lake cemetery, Grain Valley. Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Tom Wray Memorial Fund, in care of Independence Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 1094, Independence.
HAROLD F. GRAY
Harold F. Gray, 78, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Gray was born Dec. 15, 1920, near Leeton, Mo. He retired from the Kansas City Gas Service Co. after 36 years of service, and for the past 20 years, was a ticket taker for the Kansas City Royals. He was an Army veteran, and a member of Eastgate Christian Church. His wife, Anna Elizabeth Hetherington Gray, died in 1994.
His survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Joan Safia Gray, Kansas City, and Betty and Steve Mohr, Wellington, Mo.; two granddaughters, Holly Mohr of the home, and Marty Mohr, Dallas; one brother, Billy Gray, Independence; one sister, Hazel Smith, Conway, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday followed by a memorial services at 7:30 p.m. at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday in Englewood cemetery, Clinton, Mo. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice, 1625 W. 92nd St., Kansas City, Mo 64114.
GEORGE W. CARPENTER
George W. Carpenter, 70, Independence, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Carpenter was born Oct. 4, 1927, in Joplin, Mo. He was a driver for Tri State Motor Transit in Joplin, retiring six years ago. After his retirement, he went to work part-time for Convoy Trucking.
His survivors include his wife, June Carpenter of the home; two sons, Cliff Carpenter and David Carpenter, and two daughters, Nancy Spencer and Melinda Lorenz, all of the Joplin area; one stepdaughter, Terri Ables, Lake Lotawana; two stepsons, Steve Cearnal and John Martin, both of Independence; one sister, Beulah Walters, and one brother, Howard Carpenter, both of Joplin; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ozark Memorial Park cemetery, Joplin. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
BETTY J. ARCHER
Betty Jean Archer, 68, Lake Lafayette (Odessa), died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Archer was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Saline City, Mo., and had lived in the Independence and Kansas City areas, Slater, Mo., and Gladstone, Mo., before moving to Lake Lafayette in 1981. She was a clerk and secretary from 1964 to 1985 for several firms, including Sinclair & Valentine Ink Co., Box Office Magazine, and King Oil Co, all of Kansas City. She also worked for the North Kansas City School District. She was the founding mayor of Lake Lafayette and served two terms from 1994-97. She also served as secretary for the Lake Lafayette Association from 1981 to 1994. She was a 1947 graduate of Slater (Mo.) High School. She was a life member of the Odessa Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary Post No. 5675, the Odessa Duplicate Bridge Club, and a past member of the DOE-SE-DOERS Square Dance Club.
Her survivors include her husband, Robert "Bob" Archer of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. "Bob" and Barbara Archer, Parkville, Mo.; two daughters, Carol Archer, Kansas City, and Leah Bridger, Kansas City; her mother, Thelma Stechmann of the home; one brother, William Stechmann, Kansas City; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel in Odessa, Mo. Inurnment will be private. Friends may call after the service at 11 a.m. at the Odessa VFW Post.
ELMER L. DADY
Elmer L. Dady, 80, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at the Independence Manor Care Center.
Mr. Dady was born Oct. 21, 1917, in Kellerton, Iowa, and had lived in this area most of his life. He retired as a crane operator for the Sheffield Steel Corp., and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Wilma D. Dady, died in July 1998.
His survivors include one son, Larry Lynn Dady, Oak Grove; two daughters, Sharon Kay Miller, Independence, and Kathleen J. Motley, Appleton City, Mo.; four brothers; 11 sisters; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
R. EARL QUICK JR.
R. Earl Quick Jr., 79, Lake Lotawana, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Quick was born July 2, 1919, in Keytesville, Mo. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served with the First Signal Troop of the First Calvary Division. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a member of the special second amendment task force, founding member of Missouri Sports Shooters Association. He was the former owner of Quick Electric in Brunswick, Mo. He was a safety instructior for the NRH and was the original hominy maker for Heritage Days in Warsaw, Mo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Merceda Quick in 1992.
His survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, R.E. and Jo Quick, Lee's Summit; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Ahern and Eric Godt, Lake Lotawana; and grandchildren, Sean and Michelle Ahern, Brian Ahern, Doug Helm, Steven Helm, Greg Helm, Daniel Godt and Jennifer Wilson; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lee's Summit cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the NRA, Prairie Township Rescue Unit or Heritage Days Hominy Maker.
EUGENIA "JEAN" L. STEWART
Eugenia "Jean" Lee Stewart, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998.
Mrs. Stewart was born June 22, 1925, in Bates City, and she had lived most of her life in the Kansas City area. She was the owner of Grossman's Supply Co., which she closed when she retired.
Her survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Pete Mistretta, Raytown; two brothers, Robert E. Williams Jr., Burlington, Kan., and Lowell I. Williamson, Princeton, Mo., a sister, Patsy R. Bliss, Blue Springs; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Sam and Rosemary.
Services will be at 2 today at the Carson Funeral Home, 9100 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Kansas City. Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Home cemetery, Warsaw, Mo.
DOROTHY M. TRYON
Dorothy M. Tryon, 76, Kansas City, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Tryon was born July 15, 1922, in Kansas City. She was a member of Sterling Acres Baptist Church. She worked for Western Electric for 21 years.
Her survivors include her husband of 56 years, George S. Tryon of the home; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Tom and Diane Tryon, Blue Springs, Gene and Katey Tryon, Kansas City, Pat Tryon and Steve Tryon, both of Kansas City; four grandsons, one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Kansas City Hospice.
CLEVELAND H. BELLAMY
Cleveland Howard Bellamy, 51, Sibley, Mo., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Mr. Bellamy was born Oct. 3, 1947, in Warrensburg, Mo.
His survivors include his mother, Goldie Elsie Bellamy; two sons, Cleveland Howard Bellamy and Timothy L. Bellamy; five brother, Ernie, Randal, Fred, Leroy and Neal; and three grandchildren, Ashlyn, Austin and Dominic.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
ROBERT R. CRICK
Robert R. Crick, 61, Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City.
Mr. Crick was born April 18, 1937, in Independence. He was a 1955 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. He had worked as a fireman in Montgomery, Ala., before he returned to Independence and worked as a member of the Independence Fire Department for 35 years. He retired with the rank of captain. He was past presidenbt and past secretary of the Woodmoor Homes Association. He was a Freemnason and a member and a past master of Independence Lodge 76. He served as secretary of that Masonic Lodge from 1979 until his death. He had been a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and was a member of Independence Chapter 12, Council 49 and Palestine Commander 17 of the York Rite of Freemasonry. He was secreatary of the Independence Masonic Temple Association from 1979 until his death. He served the Grand Lodge AF & AM of Missouri as district deputy grand master of the 59th district, as a member of the Long Range Planning and Building Supervisory Board Committees, and as the Grand Sword Bearer in 1996 and 1997. He organized and participated in fund-raising activities for the Masonic Home for 18 years.
His survivors include his wife, Sandra Crick; two daughters and a son-in-law, Pamela Rohrbach, Independence, and Cassandra and Dennis Willett, Blue Springs; a son, Robert R. Crick Jr., Independence; three sisters, Margaret Allen and Lillian Alumbaugh, both of Independence, and Nancy Wood, Chandler, Ariz.; a brother, John E. Crick, Independence; grandchildren, Joshua and Heather Rohrback and Dennis and Shelby Willett; and 18 nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. DAVID B. SHERPY
David B. Sherpy, 74, Oak Grove, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Sherpy was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Nevada, Mo., and had lived most of his life in Independence before moving to Oak Grove nine years ago. He was a route supervisor for Bitterman and Son for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the national secretary of SeBright Poultry Club of America.
His survivors include his wife, Rosalie Sherpy of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roy B. Sherpy and David Christian and Karen, Oak Grove; a brother, Henry H. Sherpy, Wichita, Kan.; and three sisters, Mary Belle Little, Overland Park, Kan., Della Park, Westminster, Colo., and Margaret Sealy, Moberly, Mo.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel; cremation.
