AARON E. BAXTER
Aaron E. Baxter, 67, Oak Grove, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Baxter was born Feb. 26, 1931, in St. James, Mo. He was an over-the-road truck driver for Ben Franklin Stores until his retirement in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Oak Grove and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
His survivors include his wife of 39 years, Shirley Baxter of the home; two sons, William Baxter, Oak Grove, and David Baxter, Dallas; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Jean and Jim Thompson, Lee's Summit, and Kathleen and Luke Parker, Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Nelson Baxter, Bates City, Mo., and John Baxter, Bland, Mo.; an aunt, Edith Baxter, Oak Grove; four grandchildren, Lara and Kelsey Thompson of Lee's Summit and Zachary and Mason Parker of Springfield.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.
MICHAEL E. COSTIGAN
Michael Edward Costigan, 83, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Costigan was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Grain Valley, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a truck driver for many years, driving for Kroger Grocery Store and Dick's Transfer with A&P Foods. He was a member of Teamsters Local Union 955 and of the Methodist faith.
His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Marian Costigan of the home; three children and their spouses, Marjorie and Bob Varney, Lake Waukomis, Mo., Patrick and Anita Costigan, Kansas City, and Denise and Dwayne Cooksey, Columbia, Mo.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Costigan, Blue Springs, and Victor Costigan, Oak Grove; and two sisters, Delma Messina and Norma Swinney, both of Independence.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association or your favorite charity.
LILLIAN C. RAU
Lillian C. Rau, 81, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at St. Luke`s Northland Hospital.
Mrs. Rau was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Richmond, Mo., and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred H. Rau, in 1997.
Her survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Ernest King Sr., Vera and Randall McPike, Deborah and Richard Allen, all of Kansas City; five grandsons, Ernest King Jr., David King, Ryan McPike, Brett McPike and Tim Allen; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the chapel. LUCILLE McQUAIN
Lucille McQuain, 74, Independence, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. McQuain was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Walnut Grove, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a hairdresser.
Her survivors include her husband, Max McQuain, a daughter, Connie McQuain, a son, Marvin "Butch" McQuain, all of Independence; four sisters, Helen Weatherford, Independence, Donna Green, Kansas City, Mary Hayter, Springfield, Mo., and Sue McPhail, Walnut Grove; two brothers, Lee Alan Holman and Ralph Holman, both of Walnut Grove; two granddaughters, Amy Williams and Mandy McQuain; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, near Walnut Grove. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
MAYNARD L. HAMILTON
Retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Maynard L. Hamilton of Locust Grove, Va., 73, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.
Mr. Hamilton was born Nov. 2, 1924, in Opolis, Kan., and had lived in Kansas City. He joined the Navy on Pearl Harbor Day, and served for 30 years. He then worked for the American Red Cross, and later was a volunteer at the White House. He attended Northeast High School.
His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Patricia Hamilton; three daughters, Patti Garnett, Suzanne Dooley and Maureen Hackert; a son, Brian Hamilton; four sisters, Sharon Wentz, Kansas City, Eileen Denney, Bella Vista, Ark., and Reba Kenley and Judy Hamilton, both of Independence; a brother, Meredith Hamilton, Plano, Texas; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Full military services are pending with burial in Arlington National cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Navy Memorial Fund, Washington, D.C.
DIANNA K. DULEY
Dianna Kay Duley, 50, Kansas City, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Care Center.
Mrs. Duley was born Nov. 10, 1947, in Kansas City. She had been a lifelong area resident.
Her survivors include her two sons, Chet Duley, Independence, and John Duley, Kansas City; a daughter, Sara Duley, Independence; three sisters, Dorothy Webb, Shirley Hudson and Carolyn Sutherland; and two granddaughters, Ashley and Becca Duley.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the chapel.
KENT A. VITTENGL
Kent A. Vittengl, 74, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mr. Vittengl was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He had been an auto repair mechanic and a Navy veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Sue Vittengl of the home; one son, Shane Vittengl, Blue Springs; two daughters, Pam Vittengl, Kansas City, and Lisa Vittengl, Independence; two granddaughters, Shantelle Coe and Alexis Vittengl; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Friday at the Sugar Creek Optimists Club on U.S. 24; cremation with private inurnment. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Sugar Creek Optimists "Fishing Derby" for the School for the Blind. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cremation Society of Kansas City.
E. IONA SAPP
E. Iona Sapp, 86, Buckner, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Sapp was born March 5, 1912, in Englewood, Kan. She arrived in Polk County, Mo., in 1923 in a covered wagon, and had lived in Buckner since 1953. She was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, and was active in the Oakland Ladies Aid Society, making quilts and raising money for church projects. Her husband, Tracy D. Sapp, died in 1985.
Her survivors include her children, Charles Sapp, Kay Rowley and Glenda Oliver, all of Independence, Bobbie Sapp, Warsaw, Mo., and Donald Sapp, Blue Springs; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
FRED N. COLE
Fred N. Cole, 74, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Cole was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Birmingham, Ala., and moved to Kansas City as a small child. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, stationed in Greenland and Iceland as a communications specialist.
He married
Dorothy M. Cross in 1947. Mr. Cole attended Central Radio School and was a broadcast engineer with KMBC-TV, Channel 9. He was an honorary warrior in the Tribe of Mic-o-say, Boy Scouts of America, Troop 285, and a member of Raytown Christian Church.
Mr. Cole was preceeded in death by his sister, Betty and brother, Dorsey.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Cole, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Derek Wood, Independence; son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Joann Cole of Lee's Summit; granddaughter Jennifer Wood; step-grandchildren, Stephen and David West; and a sister, Ida Hodgins, of Laurie, Mo.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, with burial at Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
IRENE E. FORTINO
Irene E. Fortino, 89, Lee's Summit, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at John Knox Care Center.
Mrs. Fortino was born Oct. 10, 1909, in Bessemen, Ala. She was of the Methodist faith, she worked for Benson Manufacturing Company as a payroll supervisor for many years.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, Tony "Toats" Fortino, in 1978, and two brothers, Roy and James Rust.
Mrs. Fortino is survived by two nieces, Patricia "Tricia" Allen, Kansas City, and Barbara Maslen, Blue Springs; a dear friend, Mary Lamanno, of Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carson Funeral Home Blue Ridge Chapel, with burial at Greenlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the chapel.
DOROTHY HERIFORD
Dorothy Heriford, 84, Raytown, Mo., died Feb. 19, 1999.
Fondly remembered as "Aunt Dodo, " she is survived by two brothers, George and Milton Graham, both of the Kansas City area; nieces Carolyn Graham of Raytown, with whom she made her home, and Marilyn Muller of Shreveport, La.; nephews Hampton (Dave) Graham Jr. of Darien, Conn. and James W. Graham of Lee's Summit; seven great-nieces and nephews; and nine great-great nieces.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, with burial at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
JOYCE HELEN HUTCHINSON
Joyce Helen Hutchinson, 69, Kansas City, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel; burial at Brooking cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
ELLA M. NEWLAND
Ella M. Newland, 80, Independence, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Barry Health Care Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Mrs. Newland was born March 31, 1918, in Brainard, Minn. She had lived in Independence since 1958. She was a nurse assistant at Resthaven for 12 years until she retired in 1980, and was a member of the RLDS Stone Church.
Mrs. Newland was preceeded in death by her husband, Roderick Newland, in 1982.
Survivors include three sons, William Newland of Odessa, Mo., James Newland of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert Newland of Kansas City; step-son Emeory Newland of Independence; and sister, Sally Updike of Liberty, Mo.; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Speaks Midtown Chapel, with burial at Mound Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the Temple Endowment Fund.
HERBERT CHESTER WILLIAMS
Herbert Chester Williams, 51, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Williams was born June 29, 1947, in Beaumont, Texas. He was a veteran, and communications supervisor for the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Princella Williams, of Blue Springs; his father and mother, Willie and Revordia Williams, of Beaumont, Texas; a son, Derrick Bell, of Memphis Tenn.; three daughters, Kimberly Nicole Williams of Blue Springs, Regina Williams of Beaumont, and Tawanna Williams of Beaumont; two sisters, Loretta Lewis and Revordia Williams, both of Texas; and three brothers, Erewin Williams, Freddie Williams and Willie Williams Jr., all of Texas.
Funeral services and burial will be at Houston National cemetery Monday.
