THOMAS C. ABNEY SR.
Thomas Cleophas Abney Sr., 89, Ozark, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Abney was born Aug. 15, 1909, in a log cabin near Hattie Post Office in Texas County, Mo., and lived in Independence before moving to Ozark in 1991. He retired from General Motors after 23 1/2 years of service. He was a believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Mabel L. Abney, and a daughter, Lynda Sue Rae.
His survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas C. and Vergie Abney, Ozark; three grandchildren, Debra Secrest, Joe Jr. and Laura Marie Rodriquez; three great-grandchildren, Kristin Secrest, Tanner Chrisman and Kayla Rodriquez; one brother, Bill Abney, Willow Springs; two sisters, Dollie Murdy, Houston, and Louise Murdy, Pensacola, Fla.; and his first wife, Laura A. Abney, Ozark.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, under the direction of D.W. NewcomerÕs Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Adams Funeral Home, Ozark.
FLOYD R. BROWN JR.
Floyd R. Brown Jr., 82, Boulder, Colo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, May 31, 1999, in Boulder.
M r. Brown was born May 27, 1917, in Colorado Springs, Colo., and lived in Independence from 1947 until moving to Boulder in 1994. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, served as a major in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was stationed in Hawaii. He was a certified public accountant and established the Floyd R. Brown Jr. and Co. accounting firm and practiced accountancy until retiring in 1993. In 1954, he received a law degree from the University of Missouri. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the American and Missouri Bar associations.
His survivors include his wife, Margo Pine Brown, Boulder; two sons, Robert Brown, Belton, Mo., and William Brown, Blue Springs; a stepdaughter, Julian Pine, Boulder; and five grandchildren, Cindy Morley, and Aaron, Wendy, Mandy and Shannon Brown, all of Missouri.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. July 9 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Private services were held in Boulder. The family suggests contributions to the Hospice of Boulder County, 2825 Marine St., Boulder, Colo. 80303.
SHIELA A. FARRIS
Shiela Ann Farris, 44, Kansas City, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Farris was born Sept. 18, 1954, in St. Louis.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and cemetery, Grain Valley, with burial to follow in the Jackson County Veterans Field of Honor in Swan Lake. The family suggests contributions in Mrs. FarrisÕ name to the American Cancer Society.
VERA JOHNSTON
Vera Garland Johnston, 95, Texas City, Texas, formerly of Independence, died Monday, June 21, 1999, in Texas City.
Mrs. Johnston was born Nov. 11, 1903, in Murray, Ky., and moved to Independence in 1920 where she lived until moving to Texas City in 1989. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Garland in 1943, her second husband, Edward Johnston in 1986, and a grandson, Bobby Garland in 1973.
Her survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Walter C. and Wanda Garland, Texas City; two stepsons, Bobby Johnston, Port Orange, Fla., and Kenneth Johnston, Clinton, Mo.; one sister, Frances Beshoner; one brother, Warner Stephens; two granddaughters, Cheryl Richardson, Texas City, and Rita Sue Whiteman, Blue Springs; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the chapel.
KATHRYN L. "KATE" SAEGER
Kathryn Louise "Kate" Kent Saeger, 81, Independence, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Saeger was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Glasgow, Mo. She attended St. James Elementary School, and was a graduate of St. TeresaÕs Academy and Avila College. She was a lifelong devoted Catholic. Her husband, Lawrence W. Saeger, died in October 1982.
Her survivors include a cousin, Bonnie George; and many friends.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday at St. MaryÕs Catholic Church. Entombment was in the Mount Olivet cemetery Mausoleum, Raytown. Arrangements were under the direction of the McGilley Midtown Chapel.
VELMA O. SCHOLES
Velma O. Scholes, 84, Independence, died Friday, June 18, 1999, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mrs. Scholes was born in Foster, Mo. She had been a receptionist.
Her survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Byron Macklin, Independence; three grandchildren, Bret Macklin, Independence, Daren Macklin, LeeÕs Summit, and Kelly Miller, Woodstock, Ga.; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at D.W. NewcomerÕs Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to Beverly Hills Baptist Church, Independence.
LINDA J. TURNER
Linda Joyce Turner, 48, Commerce City, Colo., formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999.
Mrs. Turner was born Dec. 30, 1950, in Kansas City, and lived in Independence until moving to Colorado 14 years ago. She was a nurse.
Her survivors include her husband, Ralph Turner of the home; three sons, Steven Silvus, Nebraska, Shawn Turner, California, and Shannon Turner, Denver; one sister, Sharon Smith, Houston; one brother, Don Anderson, Nevada, Mo.; a grandson, Zackery Silvus; and her father, Edgar Anderson, Creighton, Mo.
Services were today at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial was in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.
JAMES H. BAER
James H. Baer, 69, Independence, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Baer was born May 30, 1929, in Chicago, Ill. He had been an engineer for the Illinois Highway Department, and was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church.
His survivors include one son, Michael J. Baer, Blue Springs; and a stepson, Gary L. Stickney, Independence.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Blue Springs cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs.
HOWARD I. CRENSHAW
Howard Iver Crenshaw, 73, Grain Valley, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Crenshaw was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Stover, Mo. He worked for the American Oil Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1970. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and had been a member of the American Legion in Blue Springs for 38 years. He was also a member of Christian Masonic 392, Oak Grove (past worshipful master); Oak Grove Chapter 407 of the Order of Eastern Star (past worshipful master); York Rites, Independence, Scottish Rites, Kansas City, Shriner Kansas City Temple, and was past president of the Heart of America Miniature Schnauzer Club. He was a member of the Historical Society, Planning and Zoning Commission and the Methodist Church, all in Grain Valley. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the old University of Kansas City. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Refa Crenshaw.
His survivors include his wife, E. Olline Young Crenshaw of the home; four nieces, Linda Colberd, Clinton, Mo., Tracy Duncan, St. Louis, Kathy Hunter, Tonganoxie, Kan., and Brenda Dollison, Kansas City, Kan.; three nephews, Jim Crenshaw, Mark Brungus and Ronald Brungus, and a brother-in-law, Reno Brungus, all of Stover, Mo.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Carondelet Hospice.
PETER J. FRUEAN
Peter J. Fruean, 72, Kansas City, formerly of Blue Springs, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at the Park Lane Medical Center.
Mr. Fruean was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Savalalo, Apia, Western Samoa, and lived in Hawaii before moving to the United States. He had lived in Blue Springs and Independence before moving to Kansas City. He was an auto mechanic for the government of Samoa, and also in Hawaii. He was a branch president and a bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Malie, Western Samoa. He was preceded in death by three children, Johnny, Franke and Corina Fruean.
His survivors include his wife, Totoa Fruean of the home; his children, Ruth Peola, Florrie Fuimaono, Rosemarie Schunk and Jack Fruean, all of Kansas City, Rita Aiono, St. George, Utah, Leah Bruce, Auckland, New Zealand, Deborah Phipps, Pomona, Calif., Jerry J. Fruean, Faleule, Western Samoa, and Karen Coffin, Independence, a sister, Ruby Fruean Pulu, American Samoa; 31
grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the LDS Center Stake. Burial will be in Brooking cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Speak Suburban Chapel.
ANNA M. NADER
Anna Mary Nader, 83, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Nader was born June 28, 1915, in Rochester, N.Y. She was a homemaker.
Her survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Luini, Elmira, N.Y., Patricia Ann Nader, Michigan Center, Mich., and Nancy Riley, Independence; a sister, Evelyn Rowady.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Springs cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Webb-Freer Funeral Home.
DR. SAMEUL A. IYEWARUN
Dr. Samuel A. Iyewarun, 65, Raytown, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at Bethany Medical Center.
Dr. Iyewarun was born March 20, 1933, in Odo-Ere, Nigeria. He was a published author and a writer. He was a history professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a teacher at Southeast High School. He was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple, and an active member of the Nigerian community.
His survivors include his wife, Dr. Rose A. Iyewarun of the home; a son, Abayomi Iyewarun, Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Iyabo Dedmon and Bosede Smith, both of Raytown, and Aderemi Miller, Honolulu; five grandchildren; a brother; and two sisters.
Services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the Kansas City Baptist Temple, 5460 Blue Ridge Cut-off. Burial will be in Oja-Oba Compound, Odo-Ere. Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Hunger Project. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City.
JOYCE I. RHOADS
Joyce Inez Rhoads, 86, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at St. Mary's Manor of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Rhoads was born April 8, 1912, in Newton, Kan., and had lived in Branson, Mo., for more than 50 years, where she was the office manager for Continental Telephone Co. She attended the American Business College in Wichita, Kan., and was a member of
the Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church in Branson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram R. Rhoads in 1966, and a son, Douglas Edgar Rhoads in 1933.
Her survivors include a son, Hiram Mikel Rhoads, Buffalo, N.Y.; two daughters, Carrol Rhoads Lauer, St. Louis, and Ann Rhoads Stock, Blue Springs; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Following cremation, memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow in Ozark Memorial Park cemetery, Branson. The family suggests contributions to the church.
MRS. G. LORENE ROMDALL
MRS. G. Lorene Romdall, 77, Independence, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Romdall was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Greenfield, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was a payroll clerk for the Marine Corps Finance Division, and formerly with GSA for many years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, played the organ and piano at several area churches, and had taught private music lessons in the Independence area for many years. She was preceded in death by her first hsuband, Fred D. Warren in 1958, and her second husband, Joe L. Romdall in 1992.
Her survivors include two sons, Fred D. Warren Jr., Pascagoula, Miss., and Barry Romdall, Independence; two daughters, Jeanne Kuhnert, Independence, and Joy Hobick, Kansas City; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesdsay at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 603 N. Jennings Road. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
