MARY E. ENGLER
Mary Elizabeth Engler, 90, Blue Springs, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Monterey Park Nursing Home.
Mrs. Engler was born Aug. 5, 1908, in Fayette, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1920. Before her retirement, she was the co-owner and bookkeeper of Engler's Expert Grinding, a barber and beauty supply business. She was a member of Fairmount Christian Church and a former member of its choir and the Joy Bells (bell ringers). She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred G. Engler in 1967.
Her survivors include a son, Robert Engler, Kansas City; two daughters, Alpha Schockley, Independence, and Marlene Covey, Prairie Village, Kan.; a brother, Alfred Askins, Kansas City; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Newcomer Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Heart of America Hospice.
WALTER R. BROWN
Walter R. Brown, 81, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998.
Mr. Brown was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Shannon County, Mo. He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service which included serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His last assignment was chief instructor of the band training unit at Fort Chaffee, Ark. He was also a member of the German American Citizens.
His survivors include his wife of 45 years, Gertrude "Trudy" Brown; three daughters, Anita Valderrama, Patty Brown and Heidi Brown, and a grandson, Michael, all of the Kansas City area.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, 11924 East 47th, Kansas City. Burial will be in Leavenworth (Kan.) National cemetery at a later date. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
VICTOR J. BOGACZ
Victor J. Bogacz, 77, Lake Tapawingo, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mr. Bogacz was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Kansas City. He owned and operated the Empire Iron and Metal Company, Kansas City, for more than 40 years. He attended St. Stanislaus School and DeLaSalle Academy. He served as corporal in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the St. John LaLande Catholic Church.
His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lila Marie Bogacz of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roger and Beth Bogacz, Blue Springs, and Alexander Bogacz; a brother, Ted Bogacz, Kansas City; and five granddaughters, Nancy, Amy, Shyenne, Gabriella and Oksana Bogacz.
Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. John LaLande Catholic Church, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.
BARBARA E. WEBB
Barbara Eileen Webb, 65, Independence, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Webb was born Jan. 27, 1933, in Independence and was a lifelong resident of Independence. She was a secretary for the Missouri Department of Corrections for five years. She was a member of the Fairmount Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by Paul Webb on Feb. 12, 1983.
Her survivors include a son, Danny Webb, Independence; three daughters, Kathryn Sims, Mary Branscum and Debbie Wilson, all of Independence; a brother, Gene Richardson, Riverside, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. JACOB R. HATFIELD
Jacob Robert Hatfield, infant son of Shane and Rebecca Hatfield of Kansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at his home.
Jacob was born Jan. 26, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
His survivors also include maternal grandparents, Patrick and Terry Stodden, Kidder, Mo.; paternal grandparents, Sam Hatfield, Marshfield, Mo., and Paul and Shawn Kirkman, Independence; maternal great-grandparents, Robert Berger, Polo, Mo., Thelma Berger, Liberty, Mo., and Rita Stodden, Claycomo, Mo.; paternal great-grandparents, A.E. "Gene" and Rosemary Hatfield, and B.W. and Maurine McCormick, all of Independence; two uncles; and five aunts.
Graveside services were today at Buckner Hill cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Carousel Hospice. Arrangements were under the direction of the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
KEITH W. LESTER
Keith W. Lester, 56, Lenexa, Kan., died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999.
Mr. Lester was born on June 29, 1942, in Trenton, Mo. He had been in welding industry sales for the past 20 years. He served in the Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He attended the Central Church of the Nazarene.
His survivors include his wife, Wanda Lester; his mother, Dorothy Lester, Independence; one brother, Dan Lester, Oakland, Fla.; one sister, Linda Loring, Leawood, Kan.; and a stepdaughter, Tracy Roudebush, Olathe, Kan., and her husband, Tim, Olathe, Kan.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, 12600 W. 87th, Lenexa. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the McGilley and Hoge Chapel; cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Salvation Army or the City Union Mission.
SUZANNE F. McGRATH
Suzanne Frances McGrath, R.N., 52, Independence, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999.
Mrs.McGrath was born Oct. 7, 1946, in Phila-
delphia, and had lived in the Independence area since 1970. She had been a recovery nurse at Independence Regional Health Center for 22 years, and a member of the National Recovery Room Nurses Association. She was a member of the KC Express Running Club, and enjoyed participating in road-running and triathlons. She was the head of the Mothers Club in Boy Scout Troop 282, and was active in various PTA's. She had been the founder and director of the Truman Health Run Walk, which was started in 1994, and goes to support the Sunshine Center.
Her survivors include one son, Charles Edward McGrath IV, Independence; one daughter and son-in-law, Megan Suzanne and Adam Zucco, Crystal Lake, Ill.; her parents, Joseph and Helen Neidinger, West Atlantic City, N.J.; one brother, Joseph George Neidinger III, Linwood, N.J.; one sister, Nancy L. Seymour, Moorestown, N.J.; her first husband, Charles McGrath III, Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. MILDRED V. NELSON
Mildred V. Nelson, 80, Independence, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mrs. Nelson was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Laurel Club and the Spring Branch RLDS congregation. Her husband, Bernard Nelson, died in 1981.
Her survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Nelson, Blue Springs; one brother, Dick Smith, Independence; two grandchildren, Tracy and Troy; one great-granddaughter, Rachel; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Austi and Timothy.
Services were today at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial was in Mound Grove cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the National Federation of the Blind, Kansas City Chapter, 403 W. 62nd St. Terrace, Kansas City, Mo. 64113.
JOHN K. ROSE
John K. Rose of Independence, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Rose was born in Shelby County, Mo., and moved to this area at an early age. He was retired from the inspection department of the Armco Steel Corp. He was a graduate of Cardinal Glennon High School, a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and the Big Brothers organization, a Boy Scout leader for Troop 178, and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.
His survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John David and Lida Rose; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Rose and Mark Benton; four grandchildren, Caleb, Shawn, Silas and Laura; three sisters, Delores McNellis and Lola Parks, both of Independence, and Dorothy Klote; a brother, Steve Rose, Raytown; and nieces, nephews, great-nephews and a great-niece.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sheil Colonial Chapel, Raytown. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel. By his kindness in death, John made a contributions to the Midwest Organ Bank.
DIXIE M. SHIELDS
Dixie Marie Osborn Shields, 70, Oak Grove, formerly of Sugar Creek, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Shields was born May 25, 1928, in Weatherby, Mo. She had been a nurse for the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. She was a member of Mount Washington Baptist Church.
Her survivors include three daughters, Donna Hessenfort, Lone Jack, Patricia Cooper, Overland Park, Kan., and Audrey Adams, St. Joseph, Mo.; two sons, Jim Shields, Independence, and Robert Shields, Sugar Creek; two sisters, Patricia Rittle, Sugar Creek, and Peggy Jane Butcher, Manhattan, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial visitation was held Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association. Arrangements were under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
DALE V. BOURN
Dale Vinton Bourn, 77, Bates City, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at the New Haven Nursing Home, Odessa.
Mr. Bourn was born Aug. 21, 1921, and lived in Jacksonville and Plainfield in Illinois before moving to Bates City in 1985. He was a farmer in Jacksonville from 1944 to 1956, and worked for CECO Steel in Lemont, Ill., from 1956 to 1985. He graduated from high school in Jacksonville in 1940, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Blue Springs.
His survivors include his wife, Frances Lucille Nall Bourn of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Deb Bourn, Blue Springs; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Fred Kinnary, Plainfield, and Phyllis and Al Moos, Chippewa Falls, Ill.; one sister, Lucille Brockhouse, Jacksonville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ralph O. Jones Chapel, Odessa. Burial will be in Greenton cemetery, Odessa. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Greenton cemetery Association.
THOMAS L. CRANDALL
Thomas Lee Crandall, 74, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Baptist Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Crandall was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Orange County, Calif., and moved to this area in 1965. Following high school, he attended junior college at Compton, Calif. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on several ships in the Pacific area, and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He was a carpenter, of the Protestant faith, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
His survivors include his wife, Betty Crandall of the home; two children, Donald Crandall and Diana Roberts, both of Independence; a brother, Harold Crandall, Lawndale, Calif.; a sister, Nina Johnson, Whittier, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Shane Crandall, Justin Barker, Valerie and Rosemary Roberts, and Steven and Margaret Adkins.
Services were Jan. 23 in Providence. Burial was in the Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.
LEONARD B. STAVER
Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Leonard B. Staver, 86, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Kansas City.
Sgt. Staver was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Adrian, Minn., and had lived in Independence since 1965. He retired in 1965 as sergeant first class after serving 21 years in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000, and Nativity of Mary Catholic Church.
His survivors include his wife, Ellie Staver of the home; one son, Andy Staver, Lee's Summit; and one grandson, Brian B. Salgado.
Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Leavenworth National cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 13, in care of Bob Wright, 1002 East U.S. 24, Independence, Mo. 64050.
MICHAEL W. TIFFANY
Michael W. Tiffany, 34, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Kansas City.
Mr. Tiffany was born Dec. 14, 1964, in St. Louis, and had lived in Independence since 1997. He was a graduate of Wright City (Mo.) High School, entered the Navy in 1987, and served until he was honorably discharged in 1993. He worked for Zio's Italian Kitchens.
His survivors include his parents, Robert L. Tiffany, Ridgecrest, Calif., and E. Jean Harrington Tiffany, Independence; two sons, Thomas Tiffany and Bradley Tiffany, Ridgecrest; a brother, Robert L. Tiffany II, Petaluma, Calif.; a sister, Vera E. Kelley, Independence; two nieces; and two nephews.
