LOUISE A. LEACH
Louise A. Leach, 83, Independence, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Leach was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. She was a co-owner and operator of Marcell Leach Fairmount Cleaners for 43 years, retiring in 1973. She was an active member of Mount Washington United Methodist Church, a member of the Inter-City Kiwanis Auxiliary, and had been a volunteer at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. Her husband, Marcell Leach, died in 1986.
Her survivors include one son, Bill Leach, Independence; one daughter, Luann McDowell, Leawood, Kan.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Inurnment will be in Mount Washington cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Salvation Army, 532 S. Main St., Independence, Mo. 64050 or Mount Washington United Methodist Church, 584 S. Arlington Ave., Independence, Mo. 64053.
WM. HOWARD "CAPPY" HUFFMAN
William Howard "Cappy" Huffman, 94, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at the Regency Care Center.
Mr. Huffman was born in Hickory County, Mo., and moved to Sugar Creek in 1912. He graduated from Northeast High School, where he excelled in many sports. He worked for the Standard Oil Refinery from 1925 until 1963. He was an avid gardner and won several awards for his flowers and his knowledge of the Missouri Dogwood. He participated in the sports of golf, fishing, hunting and bowling, and was a bowling coach for several years in youth leagues, donating many hours of his retirmement time to help young people. He coached his own grandchildren in various sporting events, and followed Jerry's American Legion Baseball all over the country. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and worked on the church grounds and rectory, as well as assisting the various priests in preserving the history of the church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Harriet "Hettie" Reeder Huffman in 1993, and a great-grandson, Sean Riley.
His survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Millicent "Millie" and Don Riley, Independence; three grandchildren, Liz Pierce, and Roger and Stan Riley; two great-granddaughters, Shannon Marie and Taylor Elise Riley; two sisters, Grace Callahan, Independence, and Gladys Powell, Liberty, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions in his memory to the church or Childrens Mercy Hospital.
LECIE A. HALL
Lecie Anna Hall, 90, Blue Springs, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at St. Mary's Manor.
Mrs. Hall was born Oct. 16, 1908, in Brushy Knob, Mo. She was a teacher for the Blue Springs School District from 1954 until her retirement, and Hall-McCarter Middle School in Blue Springs was named after her. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs, United Methodist Women's Club, the Administrative Board and Sarah Circle.
Her survivors include three daughters, Macy Ann Bridgewater, Blairstown, Iowa, Carol Miller, Blue Springs, and Ellen Mothershead, Maryville, Mo.; one brother, Mearl Heard, St. Joseph, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to the Lecie A. Hall Scholarship Fund.
LOU W. "WANNIE" CARDER
Lou Wanda "Wannie" Carder, 68, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Carder was born Dec. 27, 1930, in Gilliam, Mo. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service from 1964 until retiring as a supervisor of the Congressional Relations Group in 1991. Her husband, Maj. Donald Carder, died in 1962.
Her survivors include two daughters, Cheryl DelViscio, Springfield, Mass., and Debbie Pettitt, Blue Springs; one son, Gary Carder, Lenexa, Kan.; four brothers, Jack Harrison, Wellington, Mo., Lloyd Harrison, Kansas City, Ralph Harrison, Kinston, N.C., and Joe Harrison, Woodland, Calif.; two sisters, Marcelle Oser, Warrensburg, Mo., and Gayle Marlowe, South Greenfield, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Leavenworth cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Lung Association.
AMELIA A. CAIN
Amelia A. Cain, 97, Independence, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Cain was born Jan. 18, 1902, in Augusta, Mo., and moved to Independence after she was married
. She was a homemaker and a member of the East Alton RLDS congregation. Her husband, Jesse Lee Cain, died in 1973.
Her survivors include one sister, Mable Carl, Boonville, Mo.; two daughters, Frances Parker and Lou Fitzgerel, and her husband, Richard; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
ETHEL G. BEEDLE
Ethel G. Beedle, 86, Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Beedle was born in Reading, Kan. She had been a supervisor for the Kansas City Association for the Blind and state president of the National Federation of the Blind. She had owned a concession stand in the U.S. Government Agriculture building on Ward Parkway, and was of the Catholic faith. Her husband, Wilbur Beedle, died in 1993.
Her survivors include one son, William J. Beedle of the home; two daughters, Virginia Geier, Independence, and Willa Frazier, Lake Lotawana; three sisters, Virginia O'Donnell, Anchorage, Alaska, June Sells, Gardner, Kan., and Henrietta Goll, Emporia, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Muehlebach Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the St. Aloysius Church building fund or the Kansas City Association for the Blind.
ELSIE PEARL THOMPSON
Elsie Pearl Thompson, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Branson, Mo.
She is the mother of Fredrick Thompson, Grain Valley.
Mrs. Thompson was born Oct. 12, 1909. She was a nurse`s aide in Higginsville State School before retiring in 1974. She was a member of the Skyline Baptist Church in Branson.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Jo Ann Durham, Branson; and one sister, Frances Rice, Hays, Kan.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Snow Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo. Burial is in Richmond Memory Gardens, Richmond, Mo. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Snow Funeral Home in Richmond, Mo.
MICHAEL E. ROSE
Michael E. Rose, 48, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at University Hospital in Tuscson.
Mr. Rose was born June 30, 1950, in Kansas City. While living in Arizona, he came to Independence frequently to assist in the Rose Piano business.
Survivors include his wife, Shelly, his parents, Gene and June Rose, all of Independence; one sister, Patricia Hill, Fort Worth, Texas; two nephews and one niece.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2400 W. Drexel St., Tucson, Ariz. and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 13305 Kemper Road, Independence.
EDGAR W. WALTON JR.
Edgar William Walton Jr., 66, Kansas City, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at Research Medical Center.
Mr. Walton was born March 25, 1932, in Chicago, Ill. He was a member of Carpenter's Union Local 61 and the Red Bridge Baptist Church.
His survivors include his wife, Thelma Walton of the home; one son, Edgar William Walton III, and one daughter, Penny Kret, both of California; two stepdaughters, Patricia Guyer, Oregon, Mo., and Jeannie Phillips, Lee's Summit; one sister, Patricia Dickey, Independence; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
MICHAEL K. ROGERS
Michael Keith Rogers, 10, Raytown, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at Children's Mercy Hospital.
Michael was born April 19, 1988, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a fourth grade student at Spring Valley Elementary School in Raytown.
His survivors include his parents, Michael and Linda Rogers, and one brother, Jaime Rogers, all of the home; two sisters, Linda Michelle Pritchett, Raytown, and Christina Ford, Kansas City; paternal grandparents, Larry and Joann Shideler, Clifton, Colo., and George and Rita Rogers, Fristoe, Mo.; maternal grandparents, LaVerne Hicks and Leslie Lewis, both of St. Louis; paternal grandparents, Helen Shideler, Drexel, Mo., and J.W. Freeman, Hardin, Mo.; maternal great-grandmother, Lula Helming, St. Louis; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Raytown. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Raytown. Friends are invited to share their written thoughts of Michael by bringing them to the visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Michael Rogers Memorial Fund, in care of Blue Ridge Bank & Trust, 6202 Raytown Trafficway, Raytown, Mo. 64133. DANIEL REED
Daniel Reed, 78, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Reed was born Nov. 15, 1920, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He worked for the Gas Service Co. of Independence for 31 years, retiring in 1985. He was a paratrooper during World War II, and had served as a Cub Scout leader.
His survivors include his wife, Mary E. Reed of the home; one son, Danny Reed, Troy, Mo.; three daughters, Dennice Lovercamp, Doraee Reed and Darla Cardenas, all of Independence; one sister, Lucille Smith, Blue Springs; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
HAZEL M. DODGEN
Hazel Maxine Dodgen, 78, Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 28,
1998, at the Regency Care Center.
Ms. Dodgen was born in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City area most of her life. She lived in Las Vegas, Nev., from 1980 until moving to Independence in June 1998. She was the candy department manager for Montgomery Ward for 25 years, retiring in 1979.
Her survivors include one sister, Bernice Ingram, Las Vegas; and several nieces and nephews, including Betty L. Bryant of Independence.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Blackman Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call at service time at the chapel.
GERALDINE P. BLAKEMORE
Geraldine P. Blakemore, 88, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Blakemore was born March 22, 1910, in Atlanta, Kan., and moved to this area in 1931. She had lived in Blue Springs since 1980. She graduated from the Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing in 1931 and became a registered nurse. She worked for the Visiting Nurses Association in Kansas City during the early 1930s, and spent most of her career as a private duty nurse for the Professional Nurses Registry of Kansas City, working at hospitals in Missouri and Kansas. She retired as a nursing supervisor in 1974.
Her survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia L. and Samuel G. Williams, Blue Springs; three grandsons, Michael S. Bradley, Jeffery A. Williams and Robert D. Williams; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Andrew and Deanna Bradley, and Austin and Alexis Williams.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Blue Springs Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice.
HILDA M. AHRING
Hilda M. Ahring, 88, Independence, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Miss Ahring was born Aug. 22, 1909, in Buckner, and was a lifelong area resident. She was an inspector at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for 23 years. She spent many years with Dr. and Mrs. Ravenscraft until the time of their deaths, and was a member of the Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Levasy.
Her survivors include a companion/cousin, Carolyn Dieckman, Independence; a companion, JoSue Horner, Sibley; a cousin, Alberta J. Dieckman, Independence; and many other cousins and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Buckner Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8 tonight at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. The family suggests contributions to the Buckner Hill cemetery Beautification Fund, in care of Brown Funeral Home, attention Twila Jackson.
