CHARLES U. AHRENS
Charles Ulysess Ahrens, 89, Decatur, Ill., died Tuesday, July 7, 1998.
Mr. Ahrens was born Dec. 15, 1908, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He had worked as a farmhand, cowboy, lumberjack and factory worker at Lockheed Aircraft in California. He retired in 1974 from Bendix in Kansas City. He was a charter member of Independence First Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Lucinda Ahrens on April 23, 1996.
His survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and Don Heath, Decatur, Ill., Alice and Jerry Barnett, Kansas City, Mary and Gary Brashear, Independence, and Linda Blankenship, Independence; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Independence First Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Muehlebach Funeral Home.
MYRTLE L. BROCK
Myrtle L. Brock, 70, Kansas City, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Park Lane Hospital.
Mrs. Brock was born Nov. 2, 1927, in Pikeville, Tenn., and lived in Georgia before moving to this area in 1951. She worked in the maintenance department of Metcalf South Shopping Center.
Her survivors include her husband, James E. Brock of the home; a son, LeRoy Brock, Kansas City; four daughters, Patricia Farmer, Brenda Russell and Betty Brock all of Kansas City, and Kathy Wiggins, Blue Springs; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandhcildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
HERBERT HALE
Herbert L. Hale, 78, Independence, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Hale was born June 7, 1920, in Boonville, Mo. He was a truck driver for the Kansas City Public Library, retiring in 1985. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Eastgate Christian Church.
His survivors include his wife, Clara R. Hale of the home; two brothers, Kenneth O. Hale, Independence, and Courtney O. Hale, New Braunfels, Texas; a niece, Barbara Jo Koirtyohann, Lee`s Summit; two nephews, Kenneth O. Hale Jr., Pittsburgh, and William C. Hale, San Antonio; and three grandnieces.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. MINNIE LOCKWOOD
Minnie Lockwood, 89, Kansas City, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Truman Medical Center-East.
Mrs. Lockwood was born Nov. 20, 1908, in Whiting, Kan., and had lived in Horton, Kan., for 26 years; she had lived most of her life in Jackson County, Mo. She had been an assembler at Lake City Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the Methodist church in Horton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Brown in 1983, and two sons, Gerald C. Brown and Bobby Gene Brown.
She is survived by a son, Jack L. Brown, Lee`s Summit.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodlawn cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
RAE D. McVEY
Rae Donna McVey, 59, Independence, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998.
Mrs. McVey was born Sept. 12, 1938, in Coal, Mo.
Her survivors include her husband, Charles Wilford McVey of the home; a daughter, Rhonda McVey, Columbia, Mo.; one brother, Charles Siercks, Raytown; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Brownington (Mo.) cemetery.
RICHARD "R.J." RICE
Richard "R.J." Rice, 69, Blue Springs, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mr. Rice was born May 10, 1929, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He owned and operated his own housing construction company in this area. He was in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
His survivors include a son, Randall R. Rice, Blue Springs; four daughters, Rhonda A. Sloan, Rachelle R. Bartlett and Renee S. Schroeder, all of Blue Springs, and Rebecca S. Kaczynski, Austin, Texas; and the children`s mother, Anne; 13 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Salem cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.
NAOMA L. VOLLENWEIDER
Naoma L. Vollenweider, 80, Kansas City, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Her survivors include her husband of more than 60 years, Henry P. Vollenweider of the home; eight daughters and six sons-in-law, Lucy Weaver, Tempe, Ariz., Teresa Vollenweider of the home, Becky and Ron Eiman, Independence, Susie and David Ryan, Trenton, Mo., Sarah and Gordon Apperson, Kansas City, Ike and Tom Day, Illinois, Mitzi and Ken Hund, Shawnee, Kan., and Louise and Dan Pieper, Overland Park, Kan.; one son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Kathy Vollenweider, Shawnee; eight grandchildren, Sarah Hill, Becky and John Apperson, Andy Day, Sam and Joe Hund, and Hank and Annie Pieper; and one great-granddaughter, Tricia Hill.
A private family memorial services is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Road, Grandview, Mo. 64137.
EVERETT GORDON
Everett Gordon, 87, Raytown, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center.
Mr. Gordon was born May 7, 1911, in Rockville, Mo. He retired from Morgan Foundry after 41 years of service, and was a past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
His survivors include his wife, Icel Gordon of the home; three sons, Everett E. Gordon and David Paul Gordon, both of Raytown, and Melvin L. Gordon, Houston; a daughter, Sandra K. Moore, Raytown; a stepbrother, Richard Herndon, Oklahoma City; 10 grandchldren, Kevin, Paul, Gregg, Sean, Todd, Troy, Michael and Chad Gordon, and Scott and Todd Schram; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel.
APRIL L. ATKINSON
April L. Atkinson, 48, Grain Valley, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Lee's Summit Hospital.
Mrs. Atkinson was born April 25, 1950, in Kansas City. She was a homemaker.
Her survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jerime and Tina Atkinson, Springfield, Ohio, and Ryan Atkinson of the home; her parents, Kenneth and Nadine Ketchum, Lawson, Mo.; two brothers, James Ketchum, Lawson, and John Ketchum, Independence; two sisters, Cynthia Glenn, Sedalia, Mo., and Jodene Swait, Nevada, Mo.; and one grandchild.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Terrace Park cemetery, Kansas City. The family suggests contributions to the Arthritis Foundation.
DOROTHY J. DIXON
Dorothy J. Dixon, 80, Independence, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Dixon was born March 23, 1918, in Ford County, Kan., and had lived in this area for 43 years. She was a member of the Independence Boulevard Christian Church, Kansas City.
She is survived by her husband, H. Melvin Dixon of the home.
Cremation. She asked for her ashes to be scattered at a favorite place in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
LEXI C. HURT
Lexi Cierrah Hurt, infant daughter of Tim Hurt and Denise McClellan of Lee's Summit, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Research Medical Center.
Her survivors include her parents, a brother, Joshua McClellen, and a sister, Kacie McClellan, all of the home; her grandparents, Jerry and Linda Hurt, Plattsburg, Mo., and Gary and Mary Mathis, Cibolo, Texas; and many other relatives.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
Burial will be in Floral Hills cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the at the chapel.
KEVIN R. KIDWELL
Kevin R. Kidwell, 42, Lee's Summit, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, in Kansas City.
Mr. Kidwell was born Sept. 19, 1956, in Independence, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a machine operator for the Jim Kidwell Construction Co., and a member of Local 101 of the Organized Labor/Operating Engineers. He was an Army veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Debra Kidwell of the home; a son, James Robert Kidwell, Independence; a daughter, Tia Nicole Kidwell, Lee's Summit; three brothers, Jim Kidwell, Greenwood, Dennis Kidwell, Kingsville, and Russel Kidwell, Blue Springs; two sisters, Norma Bourne, Blue Springs, and Linda Kidwell, Lee's Summit.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
WARD F. SAYERS
Ward F. Sayers, 83, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998.
Mr. Sayers was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000; Albert Pike Masonic Lodge Sheffield (50 year member); American Legion Post 340, Sugar Creek; Fraternal Order of Eagles 3717; and Kansas City Moose Lodge 10 (fellowship and Legionnaire member). He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 348, Orange, Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Summers.
His survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy A. and Dan
Bean, Groves, Texas; five grandchildren, Bryan and Stephen Hockett, Deanna Abate, Sonya Gravis and Candace Bean; and two great-grandchildren, Meagan and Mitch Hockett.
Services were today at Charter Funerals/Truman Road Chapel, Kansas City. Burial was in Mount Washington cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Moose Heart and Moose Haven, in care of Kansas City Moose Lodge 10, 5104 N. Sterling Ave., Sugar Creek, Mo. 64054.
STELLA L. ANDERSON
Stella Lorene Anderson, 84, Blue Springs, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at the Blue Springs Care Center.
Mrs. Anderson was born Jan. 27, 1914, in Goodman, Mo. She was a homemaker, a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, and a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star.
Her survivors include her husband of 64 years, Alvin W. Anderson, Blue Springs; one son, Alvin M. "Pat" Anderson, Independence; one daughter and son-in-law, Deanna and Donald Kutz, Mansfield, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Shriner's Childrens Hospitals.
BERTHA A. "BEA" DUNN
Bertha A. "Bea" Dunn, 62, Oak Grove, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs.
Mrs. Dunn was born Jan. 29, 1936, in Napoleon, Mo. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove and the Lord's Clowns. She was an attendee of the Senior Group at Vesper Hall in Blue Springs, where she participated in frequent skits and activities. She was preceded in death by her father and one daughter, Vanessa G. Dunn in 1970.
Her survivors include her husband, Sherman Dunn of the home; two sons, Aaron Dunn, Napoleon, Mo., and Elliott Dunn of the home; a daughter, Deborah Jones, Holden, Mo.; her mother, Georgia Pizzuti, Molalla, Ore.; a half sister, Linda Barton, Molalla, Ore.; a half brother, Tommy Pizzuti, Molalla, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from noon until service time at the funeral home.
