Brooke Elaine Emerson

QUINCY, Ill. - Brooke Elaine Emerson, 25, of Naperville, Ill., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Naperville.
A requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fourth and Bird St., Hannibal. The Right Rev. Keith L. Ackerman, bishop of the diocese, of Quincy, Ill., will officiate and preach, assisted by Father Michael Kyle, Trinity Church, and Canon H.W. Herrmann, SSC. Burial will be at Brown Cemetery, New Canton, Ill.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Friday at the church.
Hansen-Spear Funeral Home in Quincy is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Emerson was born April 30, 1977, in Marshall to the Rev. James C. and Beth A. Emerson.
She was engaged to marry Jeffrey S. Mazza of St. Charles, Ill., on Sept. 12 of this year.
Survivors include her parents of Hannibal, two sisters, Meredith Marie Emerson of Kansas City, Mo., and Courtney Jeannine Emerson, Esq., of Naperville; grandparents, Lorenzo and Dorothy Gnuse of Quincy, and Dorothy Hass of Newfane, N.Y.; her fiance; four aunts; four uncles; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers; and great-grandparents.
Ms. Emerson was a 1995 graduate of Canton Illinois High School. She earned a degree in social work from Western Illinois University in 1999. She had worked as a counselor at Chaddock School in Quincy and the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center, St. Charles, Ill. At the time of her death she was serving as a Kane County probation officer in Aurora, Ill.
Additionally, she was a communicant of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Geneva, Ill., and a member of Sigma Kappa Social Sorority and Order of Omega. She served on the Kane County Gang Task Force and worked with the county's Girls' Program.

Donald Menees
Nov. 21, 1921-Jan. 10, 2003
HANNIBAL - Glenn Donald Baker Menees, 81, of Fayette and formerly of Hannibal, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Hannibal. The Rev. David Huck will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Menees was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Hannibal to Evert G. and Mary Ruth Tankard Menees.
He was married to Jeanne Johnston in April 1947 in Hannibal. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Fred Donald Menees and wife, Julie, of Fayette; and two grandchildren, Allison Brown and Garth Donald Menees, both of Fayette.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kendall Menees and Malcolm Menees.
Mr. Menees was employed for 36 years with Southwestern Bell Telephone before his 1983 retirement. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, who served for 39 months in the South Pacific. He was a member of Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55 and VFW Post No. 2446.

Angela Montague

PERRY - Angela Rae (Angie) Montague, 24, of Perry, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, from injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry. The Rev. Dale Jorgenson will officiate. Burial will be at Laddonia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Miss Montague was born Jan. 26, 1978, in Mexico to Dennis Lee and Janie Lynn Meckley Montague.
Survivors include her parents; her maternal grandparents, Wayne and Violet Meckley of Mesa, Ariz.; and three brothers, Marcus Montague and Richard Montague, both of Mesa, and Larry Montague of Cerro Gordo, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William G. and Lorene Monague.
Miss Montague was a member of Centennial Baptist Church in Mexico. She received a degree in hotel and restaurant management from the University of Missouri in 2002. She owned and operated Montague Furniture Store in Mexico. She worked part-time at the Junction Restaurant and Lounge for several years.
Juanita M. Vance

PALMYRA - Juanita M. Vance, 69, of Palmyra, died at 1:17 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Steve Barker will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Vance was born June 22, 1933, in Hull, Ill., to Archie H. and Odocia E. Morris Smith.
She was married to William J. (Bill) Vance on Dec. 31, 1981, in Palmyra. He survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Wayne Howe and wife, Susan, of Quincy, Ill., David Howe of Quincy, Steve Howe of Moberly and Darron Howe and wife, Angie, of DeKalb, Ill.; two stepchildren, Donald W. Vance and wife, Cathy, of Palmyra, and Suzanne Mitchell and husband, Brad, of Hannibal; two brothers, Hershell Smith and wife, Mary Lou, of Payson, Ill., and Virgil Smith and wife, Hazel, of Davenport, Iowa; five sisters, Freda Ward of Payson, Martha Foltz and husband, Albert, of Fowler, Ill., Bettie Walker and husband, Keith, of Kinderhook, Ill., Mamie Meyers and husband, Glen, of Palmyra, and Norma Meranda and husband, Joe, of Perry; 12 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph Smith; one sister, Rose Mary Dicken; and two stepgranddaughters, Dawn Renee Vance and Candace Marie Vance.
Mrs. Vance was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarence.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Six, Bud Bremmer, Carroll Ragar, Larry Phelps, Brock Decker and Dick Yager.
Glen F. Smelser

HANNIBAL - Glen F. Smelser, 72, of Hannibal, died at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Beth-Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Tim Goodman will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Smelser was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Hannibal to Elliot and Nellie Fielder Smelser.
Survivors include one son, Todd Smelser of Hannibal; one daughter-in-law, Ellen McCormick of Hannibal; one sister, Betty Hill and husband, Vencil, of Hannibal; two grandchildren, Ann Marie Smelser and Steven Smelser; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Elliott Smelser Jr.
Mr. Smelser was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired construction worker and a member of Laborers Local Union No. 424 and Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55. He was a Methodist by faith.
Pallbearers will be Jerry O'Brien, Roger Motley, Jerry Cawthon, Vencil Hill, Donnie McClary and Danny Roche.
Jackie Daugherty

SHELBINA - Jackie Daugherty, 51, of Bethel, died at 10:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel in Shelbina. Father Bill Peckman will officiate. Burial will be at Concord Cemetery in Sigsbee.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Daugherty was born May 3, 1951, in Hannibal to Earl Edward and Myda Margaret Noble Christine.
She was married to Mike Daugherty on May 7, 1971, in Shelbyville. He survives.
Other survivors include four children, Christie Rhodes of Atlanta, John Paul (JP) Daugherty and Zack Daugherty, both of Columbia, and Carli Hemming of La Grange; four grandchildren; five brothers, John Christine of Wright, Wyo., Tom and Ted Christine of Shelbyville, Rob Christine of Bethel and Bill Christine of Liberty; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Johnny and Louise Daugherty.

Douglas F. Spencer

LOUISIANA - Douglas Francis Spencer, 70, of Independence and formerly of Louisiana and Clarksville, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. Vernon Burger will officiate. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at the funeral home.
Mr. Spencer was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, to Clarence and Vivian Pernia Spencer.
He was married to Eleanor M. Jones on March 20, 1956, in Erie, Mich. She preceded him in death Aug. 22, 1977.
Survivors include one son, Marty Spencer of Independence; three daughters, Karen Spencer-Watt of St. Louis, Ann Lamme of St. Charles and Robyne Burger of Florissant; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Barb LaPointe.
Mr. Spencer had moved from Temperance, Mich., to Louisiana in 1966. He had been employed as a supervisor at the Dundee Cement Co. in Clarksville and retired in 1992. After retirement he owned and operated The Doug-Out in Clarksville for about seven years. He has been living in Independence with his son, Marty, for the last three years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 791 in Louisiana and the Clarksville Boat Club.

Geneva Christine Bowman

LA GRANGE - Geneva Christine Bowman, 82, of La Grange, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at Davis Funeral Home in La Grange. The Rev. Michael Mann will officiate. Burial will be at Ewing Memorial Cemetery in Ewing.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bowman was born March 5, 1920, in Quincy, Ill., to John and Mildred Eberhardt Sparrow.
She was married to Ray Lester Bowman on March 14, 1938, in Monticello. He preceded her in death June 30, 1982.
Survivors include two sons, Leon Bowman of Quincy, and Perl Bowman of La Grange; two sisters, Fern Manlove and Bette Brinkman, both of Quincy; two granddaughters, Marla Gilliland of Quincy and Denise Bowman of La Grange; three grandsons, Daryn Bowman of La Grange, Jason Bowman of Seattle, Wash., and Justin Bowman of Denver, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Jared and Jordan Gilliland, both of Quincy.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
Carolyn Luetta Johnson
May 14, 1941 - Dec. 27, 2002
CARROLLTON - Carolyn Luetta Johnson, 61, of Carrollton and formerly of Hannibal, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at her home after an illness.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m.Thursday, Jan. 2, at St. Stephens Cemetery in Indian Creek.
Ms. Johnson was born May 14, 1941.
Survivors include one daughter Sonya Siler of the state of Tennessee; one son, Chuck Mueniebach of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Clifford V. Davis
July 21, 1930-Jan. 11, 2003
ELSBERRY - Clifford Vaughn Davis, 72, of Elsberry, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery near Elsberry.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the funeral home.
Mr. Davis was born July 21, 1930, in New Hope to Graydon O. and Hazel A. Skinner Davis.
He was married to Pauline I. Travis on July 30, 1950, in Osceola, Ark. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, William E. Davis of Elsberry; two daughters, Brenda K. Powelson and Vickie Pickard, both of Elsberry; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Curtis L. Davis and DeeMorry G. Davis, both of Elsberry.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thomas E. Davis.
Mr. Davis was a carpenter for many years. He operated Riffle's Service Station in Elsberry from 1993 to 1998 and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church near Elsberry.
