Allen O. Brown

PALMYRA - Allen O. Brown, 82, of Palmyra, died at 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Bruce Jeffries will officiate. Cremation rites were observed.
Mr. Brown was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Decatur County, Kan., to David A. and Ellen Johnson Brown.
He was married to Norma J. Reid on Aug. 10, 1941, in Topeka, Kan. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Joella Biggs of Hull, Ill., and Carol Stauth of Buckeye, Ariz.; two sons, Richard (Dick) Brown of Topeka and Roger Brown of Columbia; two brothers, Charles G. Brown of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Dwight Brown of Topeka; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bartos and Dale Brown; and one grandson, Joey Brown.
Mr. Brown was a registered architect and worked as a construction supervisor in Kansas. He was a graduate of Kansas State University and a charter member of the Highland Park Optimists Club in Topeka. He was active with the Jayhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America in Topeka, where he served as troop leader and commissioner. He was a charter member of the Mound City, Kan., Lions Club and a member of the Mound City Historical Society. He was a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to a youth group of the donor's choice.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Brown's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ernest Sinclair
June 3, 1921 - Jan. 2, 2002
HANNIBAL - Ernest E. (Gene) Sinclair, 80, of Hannibal, died at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Gerald Begley will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park with a graveside military service by Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Sinclair was born June 3, 1921, in Hannibal to Ernest E. and Etta McNeal Sinclair.
He was married to Myrtle Nelson on Oct. 10, 1942. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Dale Sinclair and Floyd Sinclair, both of New London, and Kenny Sinclair of Hannibal; one daughter, Rita Hays of Hardin; three brothers, Russell Sinclair of Tygh Valley, Ore., Robert Sinclair of Vicksburg, Mich., and James Sinclair of Cadillac, Mich.; two sisters, Rosetta (Rosie) Sokol of Nevada, Mo., and Kathryn (Katy) Jennings of Centralia; nine grandchildren, Christina Mefford, Michael Sinclair, Brian Sinclair, Lora Darrah, Dirk Sinclair, Ryan Sinclair, Jared Sinclair, Brennan Hays and Sarah Pennington; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Floyd Wesley Sinclair.
Mr. Sinclair was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Hannibal. For 25 years he worked at the Hannibal Rubber Plant. During that time he also was a route driver for the Hannibal Courier-Post for 19 years. He also worked for Watlow Electric for 10 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a parachute rigger First Class. He was a member of Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55 for more than 30 years.
Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Hannibal.
Pallbearers will be Christina Mefford, Michael Sinclair, Brian Sinclair, Lora Darrah, Brennan Hays and Dean Hays.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dirk Sinclair, Ryan Sinclair, Jared Sinclair and Sarah Pennington.
Richard Corcoran

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Richard T. Corcoran, 82, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Rev. Kenneth Kuntz will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Iowa City, followed by a luncheon served at the church.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Mr. Corcoran was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Dr. Louis Leonard and Myrtle Early Corcoran.
He was married to Margaret J. O'Connor on Aug. 16, 1944, in Iowa City. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Jayne Thomas of Hannibal and Kate Corcoran of Iowa City; one son, Tom Corcoran of Iowa City; and five grandchildren, Trisha Thomas of Omaha, Neb., Anne Peterson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Megan Corcoran of Taegu, South Korea, Elizabeth Hill of Olympia, Wash., and Alexander Hill of Iowa City.
The family wishes to include as survivors two sons-in-law, Dr. Blaine Thomas of Hannibal and Lars Hill of Iowa City; one daughter-in-law, Joanna Corcoran of Iowa City; one grandson-in-law, Dr. Donald Peterson of Brooklyn; three great-grandchildren, Thomas Vivero and Nicolas Vivero, both of Omaha, and Zachary Peterson of Brooklyn; nine nieces; and six nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Katherine Flynn; two brothers, Dr. Thomas Corcoran and Louis Corcoran.
Mr. Corcoran owned and operated a business in Iowa City until his 1983 retirement. He was a 1937 graduate of Central Lyon High School and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. He attended Creighton University and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1943.
He was a 58-year member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a 4th Degree past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 842.
Mr. Corcoran was active in civic affairs in Iowa City and had received numerous awards for his civic service. He was affiliated with Iowa City Hospice from 1989 until his death, serving as a board member and president for six years. In 1997 he founded the Friends of Hospice.
He had served on the board of the Johnson County American Cancer Society, was a past president of Kiwanis Club, past president of the Regina High Booster Club and had served as chairman of Johnson County Democrats. He was a lifelong member of University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Iowa City I Club, and a member of the Elks Lodge. He served as president of the Johnson County Compensation Commission from 1982 until his death.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Hospice.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Richard Hertig, Dr. O.C. Beasley, Bob Sierk, Jim Pratt, Frank Nash and Gary Fitzpatrick.
Faye C. Crook

MONROE CITY Faye Catherine Crook, 92, of Monroe City, died at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan, 2, 2002, at the Monroe City Manor Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Monroe City. Father Bill Flanagan will officiate. Burial will be at the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Garner Funeral Chapel, Monroe City. A Parish scripture service will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Crook was born Sept. 14, 1909, in Marion County, to Samuel and Pauline Gander Sandifer. She was married to Everett Owren Crook on Sept. 15, 1927. He preceded her in death Feb. 10, 1992.
Survivors include one son, Charles Marion Crook, Paris, Mo.; six grandchildren, Christine Shimp, Shelly Greeves, Curt Fahy, Jeff Crook, Jennifer Karr and Jared Crook; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. The family wishes to include as survivors one daughter-in-law, Wilma Crook, Paris; and two sisters-in-law, Ethel Sandifer and Lucille Sandifer, both of Monroe City; her 15 great-grandchildren, Brian Shimp, Melissa Shimp, Derek Shimp, Sarah Greeves Birdno, Kyla Greeves, Kalon Greeves, Blake Greeves, Brittany Greeves, Ashley Fahy, Brock Fahy, Kaitlyn Karr, Kolton Karr, Emily Crook, Collin Crook and Joshua Crook; and her two great-great grandchildren, Teagan Birdno and Orin Reece Birdno; and one brother, Charles Sandifer, Monroe City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; by one daughter, Katherine Paulina (Pam) Fahy, three brothers, Elbert, Russell and Ervin Sandifer; and one sister, Addine Adam.
She attended Holy Rosary schools and was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In Mrs. Crook's earlier years, she was employed by the Henderson Produce Co., Carps Department Store and Robey Appliance Store of Monroe City.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Crook, Jared Crook, Brian Shimp, Derek Shimp, Kalon Greeves and Curt Fahy.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harlan Greeves, Jamie Karr, Blake Greeves and Jason Birdno.
Memorials are suggested to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Elizabeth Scott

LOUISIANA - Elizabeth Scott, 94, of Bentonville, Ark., and formerly of Louisiana, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Bentonville.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. The Rev. Earl Wood will officiate. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Scott was born May 6, 1907, in Pike County, Ill., to John and Katherine Conley Williams.
She was married to Roy Scott. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Survivors include one son, Charley Scott of Bentonville; and one grandson, Jack Bohannan of Port Barre, La.
She was preceded in death by five brothers; two sisters; and one grandson, Roy M. Scott.
The family wishes to include as survivors two nieces, Betty Kroll of Belvidere, Ill., and Marie Moore of Louisiana; and one nephew, Wayne Williams of Monroe City; and that she was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Wanetta Scott.
Mrs. Scott worked for Stark Brothers Nursery and Western Auto Store in Louisiana for many years. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Bentonville, where she had taught Sunday school and was a member of the Dorcas Group and XYZ. Mrs. Scott and her husband moved to Bentonville in 1988.
Memorials may be made to the church.
Carolyn Hack
MONROE CITY - Carolyn Hack, 72, of Monroe City and formerly of Mexico, died at her home Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City.
Joseph M. Briscoe
Feb. 22, 1927 - Dec. 30, 2001
ELSBERRY - Joseph Marlowe Briscoe, 74, of Elsberry, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home.
Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Elsberry City Cemetery. No visitation is planned. Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Briscoe was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Elsberry to Wallace Ephraim and Hazel Nichols Briscoe.
He was married to Shirley May Ray on Oct. 11, 1947, in Elsberry. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Joe Briscoe, Wally Briscoe and Steve Briscoe, all of Elsberry; two daughters, Shelley Carr of Jefferson City and Maureen Witherspoon of Conroe, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanora Davis of Elsberry.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James Taylor Briscoe; two sisters, Juanita Fries and O'thella Robinson; and one son, Michael Briscoe.
Mr. Briscoe served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He owned and operated Ray & Briscoe (R & B) Quarry near Foley for many years. With his father-in-law, Guy Ray, and his sons, Joe and Mike, he built many roads and watersheds. He was on the county school board for 18 years, was a founding member of the Khoury League and helped build local baseball fields. He was a member of Elsberry First Christian Church, the NRA, American Legion, VFW and New Hope Lodge.
Carolyn Hake

MONROE CITY - Mary Carolyn Hake, 72, of Monroe City and formerly of Mexico, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at her home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Monroe City. Father Bill Flanagan will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Shelbina.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City. There will be a D of I Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a parish Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hake was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Monroe County to Joseph Tiberious and Mary Leola Hagan Montgomery.
She was married to Floyd Russell Hack on Sept. 22, 1948, in Indian Creek. He preceded her in death Oct. 3, 1955. She then married Eugene Leon Castanier on Feb. 7, 1964, in Macon. He preceded her in death Sept. 18, 1974. She was later married to Raymond Theodore Hake on May 6, 1978, in Mexico. He preceded her in death in February 1981.
Survivors include three sons, Gary Thomas Hack of Boonville, David Joseph Hack of Columbia and James Richard Hack of Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Beverly Ann Brownlee of Cameron, Marcia Carole Devine of Adrian and Laurie Jeanne White of St. Louis; 25 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rita Kendrick of Monroe City and Dorothy Leola Dierker of Quincy, Ill.; and two brothers, Melvin F. Montgomery of Lexington and John R. Montgomery of Blue Springs.
The family wishes to include that she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Barbara Deanne Hack; and one grandson, Jason Wann.
Mrs. Hake graduated from St. Stephens High School in Indian Creek. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella and helped deliver Meals on Wheels. She had lived in Shelbina, Lakenan, Pattonsburg, Wellsville, Mexico and then returned to Monroe City to retire. She had worked for Wal-Mart and had sold Avon.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Monroe City Nutrition Center.
Pallbearers will be Bob, Ed, Tim, Joe, Jeff and Glen Kendrick, Paul Montgomery and Keith Dierker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brian, Scott and David Montgomery.
Jackie K. Powers

HANNIBAL - Jackie Kay Powers, 44, of New London, died at 12:55 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Ralls County.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. The Rev. Tim Goodman will officiate.
Visitation will be from noon until time of services Tuesday at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.
Mrs. Powers was born April 21, 1957, to Jerry D. and Shirley Gould Lee.
She was married to Harold (Nick) Powers Jr. on Oct. 8, 1994. He survives.
Also surviving are her father, Jerry D. Lee of Hannibal; her mother and stepfather, Shirley and Butch Fisher of Hannibal; one daughter, Angie Mack of Center; her grandmother, Jessie Gould of New London; four brothers, Jerry (Chip) Lee and Ed (Toot) Nuckols, both of Hannibal, Ronnie Lee of Ennis, Texas, and Bill Lee of Chicago; two sisters, Karen McClain of New London and Brenda Lee of Frankford; and three grandchildren, Destinee Mack, Summer Mack and Maddie Mack, all of Center.
The family wishes to include as survivors her son-in-law, John Mack; her mother-in-law, Joan Powers of Hannibal; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terry and Becky Stolte of Hannibal; her sisters-in-law, Dawn Lee, Denise Lee and Dana Nuckols; her brother-in-law, Donald McClain; eight nephews; and nine nieces.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Ed Nuckols.
The family wishes to include that she was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Harold Powers.
Mrs. Powers was a member of the U.S. Air Force for five years. She attended 'South Side Christian Church.
