Dorothy P. Winhold

PALMYRA - Dorothy Poland Winhold, 94, of Palmyra, died at 12:55 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at First Presbyterian Church in Palmyra. Dennis Fletcher and the Rev. David Charlick will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Winhold was born July 23, 1907, in Elvaston, Ill., to John and Arvilla Golden Poland.
She was married to Virgil G. Winhold on Sept. 25, 1932, in Alvaston, Ill. He preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1980.
Survivors include three daughters, Erna M. Winhold of Palmyra, Willa Villeme of Perry and Glenna Patton of Gresham, Ore.; one sister, Hope Siegrist of Phoenix; five grandchildren, Noelle McDonald, Lt. Erik Patton, Michelle Davis, Tony Villeme and Michael Villeme; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Winhold was a school teacher for many years, starting her career in Illinois, then teaching in the La Belle, Steffenville and Palmyra R-I schools for several years. She received a two-year teaching degree from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., and later graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville.
Mrs. Winhold was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Palmyra for more than 35 years and the Sew Study Group at the church. She also was a member of the Pierian Club, Palmyra Garden Club and Heritage Seekers.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
Pallbearers will be Tony Villeme, John Villeme, Steve Lowenberg, Chuck Hoehne, Donald Hoehne and Carl Hoehne.
Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Patton, Lt. Erik Patton, Michael Villeme, Noelle McDonald, Michelle Davis and Eric Davis.
Melvin D. Hagen
Oct. 3, 1937 - Jan. 19, 2002
LOUISIANA - Melvin Dale Hagen, 64, of Clarksville, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. The Rev. Francis Sheppard will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Hagen was born Oct. 3, 1937, in Nebo, Ill., to Normal and Alma McGathy Hagen.
He was married to Margaret May Walker in 1959 in Louisiana. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Shawn Hagen of Bowling Green and Donnie Hagen of Troy; two daughters, Debbie Winchell of Pleasant Hill, Ill., and Cindy Church of Clarksville; three sisters, Norma McKinnon of Pleasant Hill, Janice Ewen of Kampsville, Ill., and Kathy Hammond of Arizona; three brothers, Robert Hagen of Manchester, N.H., and Larry Hagen and Michael Hagen, both of Pleasant Hill; 24 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jeanette Martin; and one brother, James Hagen.
Mr. Hagen was a farm hand for C.L. Harshman for several years and later worked for Black Construction in Rockport, Ill., until his retirement.
He was a member of Calvary Gospel Church in Summer Hill, Ill.

Clarence H. Miller

LOUISIANA - Clarence Henry Miller, 87, of Jerseyville, Ill., and formerly of Louisiana, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at his son's home in Louisiana.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the funeral home.
Mr. Miller was born April 9, 1914, in Waynesville to Walter and Olive VanBuskirk Miller.
He was married to Edna Mae Hill on April 14, 1934, in Waynesville. He was married to Sylvia Louise Morris on June 7, 1975. She preceded him in death July 2, 1989. He was married to Thelma Lorene Hall on Nov. 24, 1991, in Jerseyville. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Clarence Miller Jr. of Louisiana and Walter Gene Miller of Hannibal; two daughters, Genevieve Grover of Nashville, Tenn., and Shirley E. Dunn of Vancouver, Wash.; three stepsons, Jerry Hall of Jerseyville and Bill Rousan and Paul Rousan, both of Louisiana; three stepdaughters, Debbie Lopez, Janet McCormick and Cathy Vajeho, all of Louisiana; two brothers, Paul Miller of Pittsfield, Ill., and Delmar Miller of Jerseyville; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John B. Miller and Gene Scott Miller; and one granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Miller.
Albert L. Shoemyer
June 30, 1900 - Jan. 24, 2002
MONROE CITY - Albert Lee Shoemyer, 101, of Monroe City, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Monroe City Manor Care Center, Monroe City.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Big Creek Presbyterian Church in Rensselaer. The Rev. Steve Goughnour will officiate. Burial will be at the Grandview Burial Park in Hannibal.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City and from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church.
Mr. Shoemyer was born June 30, 1900, in Ralls County to William Savator and Ella Ann Cartnal Shoemyer.
He was married to Bethel E. Willis on June 16, 1926, in Quincy, Ill. She preceded him in death July 16, 1995.
Survivors include one son, Julian C. Shoemyer of Monroe City; one daughter, Joyce Hartgrove of Clarence; three grandchildren, Chris Shoemyer of Monroe City, Randy Hartgrove of Jacksonville and Teresa Keller of Burkbumett, Texas; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to include as survivors, one daughter-in-law, Hazel Shoemyer; and one son-in-law, Larry Hartgrove.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jake, John, Robert and Ernest Shoemyer; and one sister, Betty Cooper.
Mr. Shoemeyer attended the Rock Lick School in Ralls County. He worked for 15 years for the International Shoe Co. in Hannibal. He and his wife owned and operated the A & B General Store of Rensselaer for 45 years before their retirement and moving to Monroe City. He was a member of the Big Creek Presbyterian Church for 55 years.
Memorials may be made to the Little Red School House, in care of Big Creek Presbyterian Church, Rensselaer.
Ivy L. Schutte
Oct. 14, 1904 - Jan. 24, 2002
PERRY - Ivy Lorene Schutte, 97, of Perry, died at 4:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Audrain Medical Center in Mexico. The Revs. Donald Schutte and Dale Jorgenson will officiate. Burial will be at Lick Creek Cemetery in Perry.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry
Mrs. Schutte was born Oct. 14, 1904, in Ralls County to Elmer Grant and Nancy Emmaline Huff Akridge.
She was married to Walter William Schutte on Sept. 20, 1923, in Mexico. He preceded her in death Nov. 28, 1980.
Survivors include one son, Neal Schutte of Perry; four daughters, Patsy Swon of Mexico, Elaine Keith of Moline, Ill., Barbara Campbell of Perry and Bonita Fisher of Paris; one sister, Mildred Moomaw of Center; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Brown, Virden Syler and Zora Dee Akridge.
Mrs. Schutte was a lifetime area resident and homemaker. She was a member of the Perry Christian Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Paris Eastern Star, the Perry Entre Nous Club and the Wednesday Cheer Up Club. She enjoyed traveling and needlework.
Memorials may be made to the Perry Christian Church or Twain Haven Nursing Home.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Jerry Bradshaw
June 2, 1927 - Jan. 25, 2002
HANNIBAL - Jerry Lyn Bradshaw, 74, of Hull, Ill., died at 7:28 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at his home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Hannibal. Pastor Mark Burkey will officiate.
There will be no visitation. The James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bradshaw was born June 2, 1927, in Hull to Laraine and Leona Chandler Bradshaw.
He was married to Naomi Ruth Epley on May 3, 1948, in Quincy, Ill. She survives.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Ruth Cowden of New London; three sons, Michael David Bradshaw of Kinderhook, Ill., Jerry Russell Bradshaw of Hannibal and Timothy Allyn Bradshaw of Kinderhook; two sisters, Gilda A. Erke of Barry, Ill., and Karen E. Hendren of Wichita, Kan.; two stepbrothers, Ron Harms and Duane Harms; one stepsister, Joan Hochgraber; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to include as survivors one son-in-law, Jack Cowden; two daughters-in-law, Sarah Russell and Donna Bradshaw; two brothers-in-law, Bernard Erke and George Hendren; and a special friend of the family, Rebecca Miller of Marblehead, Ill.
Mr. Bradshaw was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. He was retired superintendent of the water department for the village of Hull. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Hannibal.
Memorials may be made to the Blessing Hospice Program or the First Church of the Nazarene.
Frank E. Thompson

HANNIBAL - Frank E. Thompson, 78, of Hannibal, died at 6:09 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Arch United Methodist Church in Hannibal. The Rev. David Huck will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Grand View Funeral Home.
Mr. Thompson was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Hannibal to James E. and Helen Davidson Thompson.
He was married to Betty L. O'Keefe on Feb. 8, 1946, in Hannibal. She preceded him in death Nov. 22, 2001.
Survivors include one son, James D. Thompson of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, DeAnna Jeans of Jackson and Jill Crawford of Hannibal; one brother, James Thompson of Hannibal; two sisters, Mary Etta Kramer and Marjorie Shelley, both of Hannibal; and three grandchildren, Tammi Stollard, Michelle Thompson and Erica Job.
He was preceded in death by one brother, David Thompson; and one sister, Edith Jessup.
Mr. Thompson operated Thompson Auto Parts Co. for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Arch United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Arch United Methodist Church piano fund or building fund.
Pallbearers will be Bob Wilson, Earl Wilson, Virgil Young, Dean Akerson, Herman Hirner and Larry Mack.
Rev. Kenneth E. Brockel

JEFFERSON CITY - The Rev. Kenneth Eugene Brockel, 65, of Perry, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Jeanne Jugan Center, Little Sisters of the Poor in Kansas City, Mo.
A Mass of Christian burial was at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City. The Most Rev. John R. Gaydos presided, with the Most Rev. Michael F. McAuliffe and other attending priests concelebrating.
An additional Mass of Christian burial will be at noon today at St. William Catholic Church in Perry. The Most Rev. Michael F. McAuliffe will preside. The Mass in Perry will be followed by burial at St. Paul Historical Shrine in rural Center.
Visitation was from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Jefferson City. Additional visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Friday at St. William Catholic Church in Perry.
The Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home in Jefferson City is in charge of arrangements.
Father Brockel was born Oct. 10, 1936, in St. Louis to Frank and Lillian Damen Brockel.
Survivors include two sisters, Blanch Wyne and Rose Mary Davidson, both of St. Louis; and one brother, Frank Brockel of Swansea, Ill.
Father Brockel attended St. Joseph Home for Boys and graduated from McBride High School in St. Louis. In 1961, he entered Conception Seminary in Conception to prepare for service in the Diocese of Jefferson City. He was the first priest ordained at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City on May 24, 1969, by Bishop Joseph M. Marling, C.PP.S.
He was a U.S. Army veteran during the 1950s, serving in Wurtsburg, Germany.
Father Brockel served from 1969-1970 as associate pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Columbia, and at Blessed Sacrament (now Holy Family) Catholic Church in Hannibal; 1970-1971 as Newman chaplain at Lincoln University, Jefferson City; 1970-1972 as religion instructor at Helias High School in Jefferson City; 1970-1972 as associate pastor at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville and St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church in Osage Bend; 1972-1973 as associate pastor at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Boonville; 1973 serving on temporary assignment with St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City; 1973-1977 as pastor of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Chamois and Assumption Catholic Church in Morrison; 1977-1985 as pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pilot Grove; 1985-1988 as pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rich Fountain; and 1988-2002 as pastor of St. William Catholic Church in Perry, and St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Paris.
The family wishes to include that he was known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.
From 1977 to the present, Father Brockel served as a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He served as the spiritual moderator of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in 1981 and as dean of the Hannibal Deanery from 1996-1998.

Alice Mae Norfolk

HANNIBAL - Alice Mae Norfolk, 72, of Payson, Ill., died at 2:47 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Brother Kenneth Worcester will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Norfolk was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Louisiana to Guy D. and Jessie B. Mobley Martin.
She was married to John Earl Norfolk on April 11, 1946, in Hannibal. He survives.
Also surviving are one son, Donald Earl Norfolk of Quincy, Ill.; five daughters, Connie J. Bernard of Golden, Ill., Patricia Ann Thomas and Alice Louise Niles, both of Cooperas Cove, Texas, Kay Kendrick of Camp Point, Ill., and Tammy Dandridge of Frankford; 16 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Norfolk was the former owner and operator of Alice's Flowers in Payson. She attended Payson Christian Church.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
