Arthur Merz

BOWLING GREEN Arthur Merz, 64, of Bowling Green, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at St. Clement Catholic Church. Father Richard Frank and Father Daniel Merz will officiate. Burial will be at St. Clement Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green, with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m.
Mr. Merz was born Nov. 25, 1936, in Dardenne to William A. and Alvina Hemmer Merz.
He was married to Madonna Marie Klaas on May 2, 1959, in Wentzville. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Jane Schaffer of Clarksville; one son, Paul Merz of Bowling Green; one brother, Gerald Merz of Bowling Green; one sister, Barbara King of Perryville; and four grandchildren, Eric Schaffer and Ryan Schaffer, both of Clarksville, and Lauren Merz and Stephen Merz, both of Bowling Green.
The family wishes survivors listed include his son-in-law, Dale Schaffer; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Merz; sister-in-law, Sandy Merz; brother-in-law, Joe King; 21 nieces and nephews; and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Merz was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Rose Glueck Merz; and one infant sister.
Mr. Merz was a dairy farmer in Dardenne before moving to the Bowling Green area in 1963, where he continued grain and livestock farming.
He was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Dardenne Knights of Columbus and a member of the St. Clement Knights of Columbus Council No. 1928.
He was a member of the Missouri National Guard. He enjoyed farming, hunting, Cardinal baseball and his grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Clement Cemetery, St. Clement Charities or the Dialysis Clinic in Louisiana.
Pallbearers will be his nephews and friends.
Dr. Ruth Rice

TROY Dr. Ruth A. Rice, Ph.D., 93, of Winfield, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. today at McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home in Troy. The Rev. David Arndt will officiate.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Park Cemetery in Carthage, where the Rev. Joe Lee Tompkins will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until time of services today at the funeral home in Troy.
Dr. Rice was born Nov. 15, 1907, in Carthage to William and Missouri Belle Rice.
Survivors include one niece, Maxine Moreau of Modesto, Calif.; and one nephew, Roy Storm of Atlanta, Ga.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Mansfield Rice; and one sister, Willine Rice.
Dr. Rice was an elementary school teacher in the Clayton School District for more than 30 years.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Old Monroe.
Dr. Rice was a graduate of Washington University. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Troy Garden Club.
She was a founding member of the Troy Area Council on Aging and the Winfield Council on Aging. She was an accomplished china painter and instructor.

Anna Helen Sims

PERRY Anna Helen Sims, 81, of Des Peres and formerly of the Perry area, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Des Peres Hospital in Des Peres.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Bienhoff Funeral Home in Perry. The Rev. Dale Jorgenson will officiate. Burial will be at Lick Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sims was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Perry to William Wallace and Lula Goodwin Costigan.
She was married to Reginald C. Sims on March 5, 1938, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death Aug. 17, 1997.
Survivors include one son, Wallace Sims of High Ridge; one daughter, Carolyn Jo Tharp of Hazelwood; one sister, Marie Day of Perry; four grandchildren, Joni Duncan of Philadelphia, Miss., Roy Sims of Cedar Hill, Tricia Tharp of St. Louis and Camille Miller of House Springs; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Sims and her husband owned and operated Sims Funeral Home in Frankford for 20 years.
Mrs. Sims was a lifelong area resident before moving to St. Louis in 1998 to be near her children.
She was a member of Muldrow Baptist Church near Perry. She was a former member of the Perry Study Club. She enjoyed reading.
Memorials may be made to Lick Creek Cemetery or the American Heart Association.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Day, Roy Sims, Mark Duncan, Aaron Miller, Brian Eickelschulte and Ray Eickelschulte.
Russell W. Flowers
June 30, 1937 - Jan. 26, 2001
VANDALIA Russell W. Flowers, 63, of Vandalia, died at 11:50 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia. The Rev. Bob Hoehn will officiate. Burial will be at the Vandalia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at the funeral home.
Mr. Flowers was born June 30, 1937, in Frankford to Hermie and Edith Runyon Flowers.
He was married to Judith Masters on Aug. 26, 1960, in Bowling Green. She survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Krista Kay Luebrecht of Bowling Green; two brothers, Leroy and Donald Flowers, both of Curryville; and two sisters, Velma Laughlin of Marietta, Ga., and Lucille Felton of Montgomery, Ill.
Mr. Flowers had worked as a machinist at Harbison/Walker Refractories in Vandalia for the past 35 years. He had been a lifelong Vandalia area resident and attended area schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962.

Abraham (Abe) Detweiler

HANNIBAL Abraham L. (Abe) Detweiler, 96, of rural Hannibal, died at 12:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Willow Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. Dr. John Hayes will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Detweiler was born Oct. 24, 1904, on the farm in Callaway County to Abraham A. and Emma Juergens Detweiler.
He was married to Kathryn (Kay) Loetterle on Sept. 30, 1944, at her Ralls County home. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Charles A. Detweiler, Durand, Mich., and John C. Detweiler, Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren, Lindsey Detweiler and Sanya Detweiler, both of Eugene; and one brother, Earl Renner, Fulton.
The family wishes to include as survivors, two daughters-in-law, Tracy McBride Detweiler, Durand, Elizabeth Kealy, Eugene; and a sister-in-law, Edith Brooks, Hannibal.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Selby, Carl and Otto Detweiler; and one sister, Golda Brigleb.
Mr. Detweiler was a retired mechanical engineer, retiring from Borg Warner in 1969. He held emeritus standing in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with membership of over 50 years. He was a 1924 graduate of Fulton High School and a 1929 graduate of Westminster College in Fulton.
In 1931, he graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with a degree in mechanical engineering. During the Depression, mechanical engineering positions were scarce so he worked highway construction and also in soil conservation in Iowa and Missouri. In 1940, he earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. During World War II he worked in the ammunition production office in Wilmington, Del., designing smokeless power plants.
After marriage the Detweilers made their home in Oak Park, Ill., and Mr. Detweiler did research on fuel injection for automobiles. In 1958 he went to the Borg Warner Research Center in Des Plaines, Ill., where he did research on many projects. One of those projects was the development of the front wheel drive for automobiles, specifically the Oldsmobile Toronado.
The Detweilers moved from the Chicago area to the Ralls County farm on Trabue Lane between Hannibal New London in 1971. Following the construction of their new home, which Mr. Detweiler did the planning and much of the work himself, he volunteered for local projects. He designed the steeple for The Hydesburg United Methodist Church when the new church was built following the fire that destroyed the former church building.
He was a volunteer liaison between the architect in St. Louis and the contractor during the remodeling of the First Presbyterian Church in Hannibal. He served as chairman of the Ralls County Republican Committee during the 1980s. He had a lifelong fondness for gardening, wildlife, the farm and lakes.

BOWLING GREEN Bob Fry, 64, of Bowling Green, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Christian Northeast Hospital in St. Louis.

Richard Amling
HANNIBAL Richard H. Amling, 66, of Hannibal, died at 3:27 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Louvenia (Lula) G. Thornhill

TROY Louvenia (Lula) G. Thornhill, 78, of Troy, died at 4:22 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home in Troy. The Rev. Allen Savage will officiate. Burial will be at Troy City Cemetery in Troy.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, and from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Thornhill was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Troy to Joseph M. and Bena Hammond Sydnor.
She was married to Samuel E. (Gene) Thornhill. He preceded her in death March 14, 1969.
Survivors include two stepsons; and two brothers, Julius Sydnor of St. Louis and Norman Sydnor of Toledo, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Joseph Francis Sydnor, Robert Sydnor, Alfred Sydnor, Thomas Sydnor, Sylvester Sydnor and Toujey Sydnor; and one sister, Mildred Cockrell.
Mrs. Thornhill was employed in the billing department for many years at Troy Water District No. 2.
She had been a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Troy.

Dr. Julius W. (Bill) Well

LAWRENCE, Kan. Dr. Julius W. (Bill) Well, 89, of Lawrence, Kan., and formerly of Palmyra, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.
Memorial services will be at a later date in Palmyra. The Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Well was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Herman to Henry A. and Wilhelmina Clarenbach Well.
He was married to Geraldine Vance on Oct. 18, 1936, in St. Louis. She preceded him in death in 1988.
Survivors include one son, Dr. Michael Well of Lawrence; two grandsons; and a stepgranddaughter.
Dr. Well was a retired physician and surgeon. He practiced medicine for 46 years in Palmyra and at St. Elizabeth's Hospital and Levering Hospital in Hannibal. He retired in 1982. He had served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II in the South Pacific.
He was a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. and received his medical degree from Northwestern University of Chicago, Ill. He did his internship in medicine at the City Hospital in St. Louis. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Missouri Medical Society. He was a charter member of the Palmyra Kiwanis Club, a city council member, school board member, a member of the American Legion and the Palmyra United Methodist Church. He had lived in Lawrence for the past four years.

Roy E. Robbins

HANNIBAL Roy E. Robbins, 91, of Barry, Ill., and formerly of Hull, Ill., died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Barry Community Care Center in Barry.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Pastor Jack Schultz will officiate. Burial will be at Kinderhook Cemetery in Kinderhook, Ill.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the funeral home.
Mr. Robbins was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Gladstone, Ill., to Willis R. and Mary E. Rennard Robbins.
He was married to Viola Hastings on Sept. 13, 1938. She survives.
Other survivors include four daughters, Mildred Cox of Palmyra, Lynda White of Quincy, Ill., Cherryl Robbins of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Bonnie Spann of Hull; three sons, Willis Robbins of Bay Minette, Ala., Rodney Robbins Sr. of Hull and Jerald (Jerry) Robbins of Summer Hill, Ill.; one brother, Leo Robbins of Baylis, Ill.; three sisters, Alice Bastian of Monroe City; Edith Kroencke of Liberty, Ill., and Mary Easley of Canton; 24 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lincoln Robbins; and one sister, Gladys Ewing.
Mr. Robbins was a retired farmer and carpenter.
