Oscar Ferguson
TROY Oscar Lee Ferguson, 78, of Troy, died Jan. 29, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield.
Funeral services for Mr. Ferguson will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home in Troy. Burial will be at Zion Cemetery, Truxton.
Mr. Ferguson was born March 2, 1921, in Harvey, Iowa.
He was married to Elsie Frances (Sis) Kinion on June 15, 1940, at St. Charles. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Sandra Kay Gibson of Troy and Brenda Sue Klein of Silex; seven grandchildren, Randy Murphy, Dawn O'Mara, Beth O'Mara, Trever Quigley, Patrick Gibson, Tonya Klein and Trent Klein; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bob Ferguson of Springfield, Ore.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patsy Lee Murphy; and two grandchildren, Shawn O'Mara and Michelle Murphy.
Mr. Ferguson grew up in Jonesburg. He moved to Troy following his military service and was the owner and operator of Ferguson Construction until his retirement in 1984. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Local 1875 Carpenter's Union and the First Baptist Church of Jonesburg.
Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Evelyn Gessman
BOWLING GREEN Evelyn Eileen Gessman, 79, of Bowling Green, died at 4:45 p.m. Jan. 28, 2000, at Moore-Pike Nursing Home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gessman will be at 1 p.m. today at the Kirks Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green. Burial will be at Bowling Green Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Mrs. Gessman was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Silex, to Ernest and Nora Walker Harris.
She was married to Theodore (Ted) Gessman. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Dean of Bowling Green; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Teddy Wayne Gessman; one brother, Wilmer Colbert; and one sister, Hazel Meuth.
Mrs. Gessman worked as a seamstress for the Bobby Brooks Garment Factory.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Kirks Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Pike County Home Health and Hospice, or the Moore-Pike Activity Fund.
Darlene L. Appelhans
TOPEKA, Kan. Ð Darlene Lillian Appelhans, 79, of Topeka, Kan., died Jan. 26, 2000, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Topeka. Private burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Scranton, Kan.
Mrs. Appelhans was born July 4, 1920, in Carthage to John and Mary Elizabeth Markley Linder.
Survivors include four sons, Jim Mobley of Carthage, Ronald Mobley of Aiea, Hawaii, Richard Appelhans of Kansas City and Gerald Appelhans of Topeka; four sisters, Pat Walker and Beulah Rutherford, both of Joplin, Louise Pendergraft of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ruby Parker of Hannibal; one brother, Arnold Hurst of Tulsa, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her twins, David and Diane Appelhans; one sister, Wilma Warrington; and one brother, Gene Hurst.
Mrs. Appelhans was in the first graduating class at St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in Joplin. She was a nurse for 32 years, beginning at Jane Chinn Hospital in Webb City, and retiring from Stormont-Vail Hospital in 1975. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and AARP.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the church.

Howard Armbruster
ELSBERRY Ð Howare Clyde Armbruster, 86, of Elsberry, died Jan. 27, 2000, at the Smith Barr Manor in Louisiana.
Funeral services for Mr. Armbruster will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsberry. Father James Grady will officiate. Burial will be at Elsberry City Cemetery.
Mr. Armbruster was born July 5, 1913, in De Soto, to Jacob and Mary Ann Vahey Armbruster.
He was married to Marjorie (Peg) Bowton on Dec. 28, 1939, in Louisiana. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Michael Armbruster of Longmont, Colo., and Tim Armbruster of Elsberry; one daughter, Maria Laird of Elsberry; four grandchildren, Stephanie Ellis of Elsberry, Marcie Laird of O'Fallon, Oandon Armbruster of Chicago and Adam Armbruster of Fort Collins, Colo; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Gladys Suddarth of Clarksville, Erma Ruhmann of St. Charles, Opal Armbruster of St. Louis and Dorothy Penrod of Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Armbruster; and two sisters, Thelma Crenshaw and Vivian Magee.
The Armbrusters are long-time members of the Elsberry area. Mr. Armbruster was a retired farmer and concrete finisher. He enjoyed visiting his farm and reading. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
Anna Mae Erb
VANDALIA Ð Anna Mae Erb, 83, of Farber, died at 9:55 p.m. Jan. 27, 2000, at Audrain Medical Center, Mexico.
Funeral services for Mrs. Erb will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia. The Rev. Ron Franklin and the Rev. Jim Williams will officiate. Interment will be at Farmer Cemetery.
Mrs. Erb was born Aug. 27, 1916, in rural Vandalia to Cecil D. and Pearle D. White Pease. She was married to Jacob Randall Erb on April 16, 1955, in Vandalia. He preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1989.
Survivors include one brother, George M. Pease of Vandalia; and one sister, Bettye J. Scherder of Denver.
She was a lifelong resident of the Farber area, attended area schools and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vandalia. She was a homemaker, and worked for Ely Walker Garment factory for several years.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Waters Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Paul Scherder, George Clossin, Jimmy Pease and Kenny Pease.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Vandalia.
Anna Margaret Carter

EWING Anna Margaret Carter, 79, of Maywood, died at 7:08 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing. The Rev. David Stephenson will officiate. Burial will be at the Durham Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family meeting friends after 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Durham to Thomas Earl and Zeta Fay Morey Nelson.
She was married to Clyde O'Neal Carter on Sept. 16, 1939, in Durham. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Carter, Maywood; one granddaughter, Jana Carter; and one sister, Opal Carter, Maywood.
Mrs. Carter was a devout Christian and served as a Sunday and Bible school teacher at Durham Baptist Church for a number of years. She was Sunday school teacher of the adult ladies class at South Union Baptist Church where she was a member.
She had been an agent for the Lewis County Mutual Insurance Company for 22 years. She loved music, cooking, the farm, and spending time with and doing things for her family.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Durham Cemetery Association.
Pallbearers will be Nelson Carter, Dennis Carter, Randy Carter, Mike Carter, John Shumate and Mike Lowe. Honorary pallbearers will be Otis Crook, Virden Winship, David St. Clair and Randall Sharpe.
John Allen Magruder

SHELBINA John Allen Magruder, 86, of Shelbina, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Chapel. Frieda Bettes will officiate. Burial will be at Shelbina Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Magruder was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Monroe County to John Elige and Mary Alice Lewis Magruder.
He was married to Ruth Snyder on Oct. 24, 1949, in Shelbina. She preceded him in death on Sept. 13, 1994.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond Magruder, St. Charles, and Mike Magruder, Shelbina; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Magruder was a member of United Methodist Church in Shelbina. He auctioneered and farmed for 60 years in Shelby County and graduated from Shelbina High School.

Ruth M. Keller

PALMYRA Ruth M. Keller, 90, of Palmyra and formerly of Emerson, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Bruce Jeffries will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.
Mrs. Keller was born Nov. 16, 1910, in Emerson to William B. and Margaret Bowles Jarman.
She was married to Charles W. (Bill) Keller on Aug. 3, 1933, in New London. He preceded her in death May 26, 1986.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister; and two brothers.
Mrs. Keller taught school in the Philadelphia-Emerson area for 41 years. She retired in 1971.
Mrs. Keller was a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church and a former member of Emerson Christian Church.
She also was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Missouri, National Retired Teachers, Marion-Ralls Retired Teachers and Emerson Friendly Neighbors Club.
She had served on the Democratic Central Committee in Marion County for many years. She was a graduate of Emerson schools and Culver-Stockton College in Canton.
Memorials may be made to Palmyra United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be C.B. Keller, George Keller, Donald Keller, Howard Keller, Jim Keller, Chuck Keller and George Alan Keller.
Honorary pallbearers will be her former students.
Bessie L. Gottman

PALMYRA Bessie L. Gottman, 85, of Palmyra, died at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Bruce Jeffries will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Gottman was born June 6, 1915, in West Ely to Fallie A. and Louise C. Swigert Masterson.
She was married to Herbert H. Gottman on April 14, 1935, in Palmyra. He preceded her in death Dec. 8, 1974.
Survivors include one son, Dennis L. Gottman of Palmyra.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, whom she raised; and one sister.
Mrs. Gottman was a homemaker who was known for making quilts. She was the great-great-granddaughter of the first settlers of Hannibal.
She was a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church. She had worked as an election judge in Palmyra for many years.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
