James H. Magruder
SHELBINA James H. Magruder, 82, of Shelbina, died at 7:50 p.m. Jan. 23, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the First Baptist Church in Shelbina. Kenneth Harland will officiate. Burial will be at Shelbina Cemetery, Sunset Slope Addition.
Mr. Magruder was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Monroe County to Pearl and Verdie Patterson Magruder.
He was married to Margaret Garrison on July 1, 1939. She preceded him in death Sept. 15, 1989. He was later married to Nell DeOrnellis Hunt on Jan. 1, 1990. She survives.
Other survivors include six children, Shirley Black, James Weldon Magruder, Nell Buckman and Elizabeth (Libby) Youse, all of Shelbina, Pearl Melvin Magruder of Lentner and Charlotte Nagel of Columbia; 13 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Virginia Vollmer.
Mr. Magruder was a member of Crooked Creek Baptist Church, south of Shelbina, and was a farmer. He enjoyed playing pitch.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina.
Pallbearers will be Rob Black, Mike Black, Doug Nagel, Rodney Nagel, Matt Buckman, Michael Buckman, Martin Buckman, Kevin Magruder and Clint Youse.
Memorials may be made to the Shelbina Senior Citizens Nutrition Site or Northeast Missouri Old Threshers Association.
Dorothy M. Lansdown
QUINCY, Ill. Dorothy M. Lansdown, 91, of Palmyra and formerly of Quincy, Ill., died Jan. 23, 2000, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home in Quincy. The Rev. Oscar Natwick will officiate. Burial will be at Quincy Memorial Park.
Mrs. Lansdown was born March 25, 1908, in Augusta, Ill., to Abraham and Nancy Hanks Cooper Worman.
She was married to Bernard Lansdown on Sept. 3, 1932. He preceded her in death July 29, 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Crane of Hannibal, Bonnie Blattner of Quincy; four grandchildren, Kimberly Bross of Hannibal, Kamila Cozort of San Francisco, Calif., and Lisa Howerton and Jeff Blattner, both of Quincy; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Argall of Hillcrest, Ill.
She was preceded in death by one brother, George; and seven sisters, Bernice Roberts, Carol Worman, Inez Burton, Helen Hagmeyer, Betty Riley, Alice Nichols and Grace Moore.
Mrs. Lansdown was a graduate of Augusta High School and a member of St. John's Anglican Church.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Anglican Church and/or Alzheimer's Association.
Lorraine Lambert
HANNIBAL Lorraine Lambert, 75, of Hannibal, died at 6:04 a.m. Jan. 24, 2000, at her home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home. Father Dan Lueckenotte will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.
Mrs. Lambert was born April 19, 1924, in Hannibal to Ernest J. and Vivian Pryor Lubbering.
Survivors include one son, Robert E. Lambert of Hannibal; three daughters, Linda Kay Ragland and Debra J. Lambert, both of Hannibal, and Judith A. Richardson of New London; one brother, Lynn Lubbering of Kirksville; four grandchildren, Nikki Shrum, Tara Lambert, Staci Anderson and Nya Rogers; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Theresa Marie Lambert.
Mrs. Lambert formerly was a clerk at the TG & Y store in Hannibal.
She was a member of Holy Family Church.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Hannibal Regional Hospital Home Health Care, the American Heart Association or Marion County OATS bus.
Pallbearers will be John Rogers, Bill Shrum, Mike Clark, George Ballinger, Ronnie Bird and Doug Gregonis.
James T. Ward
HANNIBAL James T. Ward, 76, of Hannibal, died at 7:55 p.m. Jan. 21, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Saturday at James O'Donnell Funeral Home. Pastor David Huck officiated. Interment will be at a later date at Fairview Cemetery in Louisiana.
Mr. Ward was born March 1, 1923, in Oakwood to Thomas and Maggie Ford Ward.
He was married to Doris O'Brien on April 12, 1942, in Hannibal. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Denice Lucas of Louisiana; one son, James R. Ward of Waseca, Minn.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Ward; and one sister, Martha Ward.
Mr. Ward was a retired agent with the Burlington-Northern Railroad.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Ward was a member of Arch United Methodist Church. He was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge in Louisiana and the Eastern Star.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Judge Daniel Brook Bartlett
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Judge Daniel Brook Bartlett of Kansas City, Mo., died Jan. 21, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
A private graveside service will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City.
Judge Bartlett was survived by his wife, Karen; one son, Linton Bartlett of Jefferson City; three daughters, Julia Bartlett of Santa Fe, N.M., Amanda Bartlett Mook of Jefferson City and Polly Bartlett of Hannibal; two granddaughters, Emily Bartlett and Kelsey Bartlett, both of Jefferson City; and one brother, Edward Bartlett of Putney, Vt.
Judge Bartlett was chief judge of the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Missouri.
He also was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Linda Hall Library in Kansas City and a member of the board of St. Luke's Hospital Foundation.
Memorials may be made to the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City or the Blood and Morrow Transplant Unit at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
Weldon Thrasher
SHELBINA Weldon E. Thrasher, 77, of Bethel, died at approximately 6:55 p.m. Jan. 22, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina. Marty Lowe will officiate. Burial will be at Bethel Zion Cemetery southwest of Bethel.
Mr. Thrasher was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Bethel to W.E. and Lena June Vanskike Thrasher.
He was married to Leah Phillips on May 7, 1944. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jerry Thrasher of Springfield, Mo., and Larry Thrasher of Shelbyville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers; and two sisters.
Mr. Thrasher was a retired farmer and cattle dealer.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Thrasher was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Shelbyville. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was an avid baseball fan.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the North Shelby Summer League Baseball Association.
Lillian C. Strusz
AURORA, Ill. Lillian C. Strusz, 78, of Monroe City and formerly of Aurora, Ill., died at 8:53 a.m. Jan. 25, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Aurora, Ill. Burial will be at River Heights Cemetery in Batavia, Ill.
Mrs. Strusz was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Aurora, Ill., to Fred and Mary Fichtel.
She was married to Carlyle Strusz on Feb. 3, 1951, in Aurora, Ill. He preceded her in death April 10, 1971.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Strusz of Monroe City, and Robert Strusz of North Aurora, Ill.; one brother, Lee Fichtel of North Aurora; two sisters, Shirley A. Nilges of Plainfield, Ill., and Betty Little of Michigan; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Strusz attended the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Aurora.
She was a member of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Aurora and later attended the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Monroe City.
She was a retired employee of the Rochester Germacide Plant of Aurora.
Since living in Monroe City she was a resident of the Bristol Manor Care Center.
There will be no visitation in Monroe City.
The Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City is in charge of arrangements.
Bertha M. Clay
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. Bertha M. Clay, 72, of Rock Island, Ill., died Jan. 23, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center in West Rock Island.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Olivet Baptist Church in Rock Island. The Rev. Duane M. Sleet Sr. will officiate. Burial will be at Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.
Mrs. Clay was born March 9, 1927, in Monticello to William and Fannie B. Tate Baker.
She was married to Ralph B. Clay on Jan. 15, 1955, in Quincy, Ill. He survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Michelle McElroy and Sherry L. Strait, both of Rock Island; one son, Henry C. McElroy III of Joliet, Ill.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters; and two brothers.
Mrs. Clay was a member of Olivet Baptist Church of Rock Island, where she served on the Mother Board. She was a faithful Pilgrim Traveler until her health problems hindered her efforts physically. She was employed in the housewares department at the former McCabe's Department Store in Rock Island.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Hodgson Funeral Home in Rock Island.
Herchel W. Maiden
VANDALIA Herchel W. Maiden, 78, of Farber, died at 10:35 a.m. Jan. 25, 2000, at Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia. The Rev. Bob Balwanz will officiate. Burial will be at Laddonia Cemetery.
Mr. Maiden was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Pike County to Olin and Nora Pitzer Maiden.
He was married to Frances Jackson on June 20, 1942, in Mexico. She survives at Tri-County Care Center.
Other survivors include three daughters, Connie Cox of Farber, Cathy A. Hannaford of Vandalia and Cindy Mehler of Silex; two sisters, Margie Maiden of Ashley and Carolyn Bailey of Vandalia; and two grandchildren, April Cox and Michael Mehler.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon Maiden; and one sister, Olene Hendrix.
Mr. Maiden had worked at Harbison-Walker Refractories for 35 years prior to his retirement. At the plant, he worked in the press room and tow motors. He also farmed east of Vandalia from the early 50's until 1989 when the farm was sold and he and his wife moved to Farber.
Mr. Maiden was a lifelong Vandalia/Farber area resident. He was a member of the Farber Presbyterian Church. He and his wife traveled extensively, having traveled to every state except Alaska. He enjoyed collecting and raising different livestock. He attended Prairie View schools.
Visitation will be from noon until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or to the Farber Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers will be Lonnie Bailey, Randy Bland, Lindell Hopke, Paul R. Evans, David Whiteaker and Melvin Perkins.
Nancy J. Thomason
PALMYRA Nancy J. Thomason, 80, of El Cajon, Calif., died Jan. 23, 2000, in El Cajon.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra. Father Dan Lueckenotte will officiate.
Mrs. Thomason was born March 17, 1919, in Palmyra to Gentry and Adine Buell Cummings.
Survivors include two sons, Gentry D. Thomason of Long Beach, Calif., and Allen A. Thomason; two daughters, Karen J. Hopwood of the state of California and Sharon Partney of St. Louis; one sister, Gentria C. McCrea of La Mesa, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Thomason was a homemaker and a member of St. John The Cross Catholic Church in El Cajon.
The Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra is in charge of arrangements.
