Elizabeth (Betsy) Swiger

BOWLING GREEN ­ Elizabeth (Betsy) Swiger, 95, of Bowling Green, died Jan. 21, 2000, at Tri-County Nursing Home in Vandalia.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Bowling Green City Cemetery. The Rev. Glenn Foreman will officiate.

Mrs. Swiger was born Sept. 20, 1904, in Curryville to Daniel Lee and Cava M. Cartmill Rose.

She was married to Aubrey Swiger. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Garrett of Vandalia; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, James Swiger; two sisters; and three brothers.

Mrs. Swiger was a homemaker.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Florence Opal Norris

HANNIBAL ­ Florence Opal Norris, 89, of Hannibal, died at 4:05 a.m. Jan. 22, 2000, at Levering Regional Health Care Center in Hannibal.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home. Pastor Richard Ingmire will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.

Mrs. Norris was born June 28, 1910, in Clarence to James H. and Lucana Ray Clark.

She was married to Melvin L. Norris on March 25, 1944, in New London. He preceded her in death in 1968.

Survivors include one daughter, Bettie Schnelle of Hannibal; one stepdaughter, Barbara Ruhl of Hannibal; five grandchildren, Wendy Hays, Missy Johns, Megan Moore, Keith Schnelle and Kenton Schnelle; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Shelby Clark and Cecil Clark; two sisters, Edna Johnson and Rosa Rouse; and one granddaughter, Shelbie Schnelle.

Mrs. Norris retired as a cook in the dietary department at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

She was a Methodist by faith.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Keith Schnelle, Kenton Schnelle, Brenton Schnelle, P.J. Johns, Scott Hays and Will Hays.

Dorothy Henderson

HANNIBAL ­ Dorothy M. Henderson, 88, of Hannibal, died at 10:10 p.m. Jan. 22, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Smith Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Walter Reed will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.

Mrs. Henderson was born Nov. 6, 1911, in Hannibal to John H. and Eunice Ann Gould Anderson.

She was married to Ted M. Henderson on April 16, 1939, in Hannibal. He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John J. Henderson of Elsberry and Charles E. Henderson of Kansas City; four grandchildren, Sherri L. Henderson of Elsberry, Lauren L. Henderson, Jason R. Henderson and Sarah P. Henderson, all of Kansas City; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nell E. Bonnell; and one brother, Harold Anderson.

Mrs. Henderson was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Hannibal for 40 years. She retired in 1976 as supervisor.

Mrs. Henderson was a member of First Christian Church, and the Christian Women's Fellowship, Adah group, at the church. She also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

She was a Hannibal High School graduate and attended Hannibal-LaGrange College.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at the funeral home.

Martha Faye Presley

MONROE CITY ­ Martha Faye Presley, 37, of Monroe City, died Jan. 23, 2000, at her home in Monroe City. The Monroe County coroner reported she died of undetermined natural causes.

Funeral services are pending at Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City.

Laverna Van Sickle

FRANKFORD ­ Laverna Van Sickle, 82, of Frankford, died Jan. 21, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Frankford Presbyterian Church. Dr. Robert Miller will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Mrs. Van Sickle was born March 12, 1917, in Pittsfield, Ill., to E.E. and Viola Knollhoff Lemery.

She was married to Archie O. Van Sickle on Dec. 1, 1934. He preceded her in death May 20, 1979.

Survivors include seven daughters, Helen Dowell of Bowling Green, Jean Clark and Joyce Armour, both of New London, Mary Steinmann of Billings, Rose Weldy of Frankford, Viola Jordan of Bridgeport, W.Va., and Virginia Strohm of Clinton, Ind.; five sons, Duane Van Sickle of Cabot, Ark., Harold Van Sickle and Archie E. Van Sickle, both of Mexico, Floyd Van Sickle of Hannibal and Edward Van Sickle of Center; one sister, Alice Olsen of Snow, Mass.; 31 grandchildren; and 62 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Van Sickle and her husband owned and operated Finn Service Station at the Oakwood junction in Hannibal from 1966 until 1972.

She was a member of Frankford Presbyterian Church and a former member of Arch United Methodist Church in Hannibal. She enjoyed reading and studying the Bible. She also enjoyed fishing, puzzles and crocheting.

Mrs. Van Sickle was an active leader of Pleasant Workers 4-H Clubs of Frankford.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Toland, Matt Clark, David Steinmann, Tony Weldy, Jeff Van Sickle, Richard Armour, Brian Strohm and Eddie Van Sickle.

Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Clark, Todd Steinmann, Ron Weldy, James Weldy, Christopher Strohm, Carl Toland, Gerald Weldy and Mark Clark.

Violet R. King

TROY ­ Violet R. King, 72, of House Springs, died at 9:30 p.m. Jan. 20, 2000, at her residence.

Funeral services will be at noon Monday, Jan. 24, at McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home in Troy. The Rev. Gerome Gennaria will officiate. Burial will be at Zion Cemetery in St. Louis.

Mrs. King was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Clay County, Ark., to Delmer and Marie Keelin Jackson.

She was married to Derrell King on July 29, 1944, in the state of Arkansas. He preceded her in death March 17, 1997.

Survivors include five sons, John King of St. Louis, Don King of O'Fallon, Ronnie King and Jimmy King, both of Troy and Larry King of Foley; four daughters, Bonnie King of House Springs, Connie King of St. Louis, and Rita Roettjer and Sharon King, both of Foley; one brother, Lewis Jackson of the state of Arkansas; and three sisters, Winfred Golliver of Troy, Lillie Snyder of Naples, Fla., and Cleta Faye Jackson of Corning, Ark.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Luther Roberts; and one granddaughter, Lisa Jones.

Mrs. King had been a homemaker.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, and from 9 a.m. until time of services Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice, in care of McCoy & Blossom Funeral Home in Troy.

Pallbearers will be Wade King, Joey Thomas, Ronnie King Jr., Timmy King, David Prinster and Don Harris.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Bartley and Steve Hall.

Robert E. Miller

CANTON ­ Robert E. Miller, 70, of Canton, died at 8:55 a.m. Jan. 21, 2000, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Funeral services for Mr. Miller will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davis Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. L.D. Grant will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton.

Mr. Miller was born April 11, 1929, in Quincy, Ill., to E.O. and Iva Woods Miller.

He was married to Sophia Riney. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sons, Mark D. Miller of Quincy, Ill., Jeffrey Robert Miller of Webster, Ill. and Timothy Edward Miller of Barrington, Ill.; two daughters, Bobbette J. Miller and Rebecca A. Kelsall of Quincy, Ill.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Pauline Smith of Danville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

Mr. Miller was a truck driver for Thompson Truck Line in Quincy, Ill., for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army from April 20, 1948 to April 2, 1952. He was a member of the Otto Bruner American Legion Post 170 in Canton. He was of the Protestant faith.

Visitation for Mr. Miller will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family meeting friends after 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doris C. Reading

VANDALIA ­ Doris C. Reading, 80, of rural Middletown, died at 6 a.m. Jan. 21, 2000, at her home in rural Middletown.

Funeral services for Mrs. Reading will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at Waters Funeral Chapel in Vandalia. Ralph Swarthout will officiate. Burial will be at Vandalia Cemetery.

Mrs. Reading was born Oct. 1, 1919, in rural Vandalia to William Carl and Edna Alice Smith.

She was married to Paul O. Reading on May 14, 1938, in Bowling Green. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include six sons, Eldon Reading and Don Reading of Middletown, James P. Reading and Howard Reading of Vandalia, George Edward Reading of Curryville and Dwayne Reading of Bowling Green; one daughter, Evelyn Reid of Bowling Green; three brothers, Roy Keller of Madras, Ore., Dale Keller of Farber and Melvin Epperson of Vandalia; one sister, Helen Pease of Vandalia; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Martha Doris Reading; one granddaughter, Tanya Reading; and two brothers, Leo Keller and Mayo Keller.

Mrs. Reading was a lifelong Pike County resident, and was a homemaker on the family farm in Vandalia.

Visitation for Mrs. Reading will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Waters Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Vandalia Cemetery Association.

Pallbearers will be Derrick Reading, Brady Reading, Harold Schmidt, Bryan Collins and Shawn Reading.

John H. (Jack) Foley Jr.

HANNIBAL ­ John H. (Jack) Foley Jr., 82, of Hannibal, died at 7:13 p.m. Jan. 20, 2000, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. Father Dan Lueckenotte will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post 55 will be at Holy Family Cemetery in Hannibal.

Mr. Foley was born March 27, 1917, in Hannibal to John H. Sr. and Blanche E. Hoagland Foley.

He was married to Evelyn A. Gallant on June 21, 1941, in Lynn, Mass. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, John H. Foley III of Springfield, Mo.; one daughter, Lisa Jones of Palmyra; three grandchildren, Michael Patrick Foley, John Joseph Foley and Tyler Ray Jones; and one stepgrandchild, Bridgette Jones.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Francis E. Foley, and by two sisters, Loretta Wingfield and Juanita Paddock.

Mr. Foley was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a retired police captain having worked for the Hannibal Police Department for 27 years. He also served as Marion County Sheriff for eight years and as a criminal investigator for the public defender's office for five years. He was a member of Holy Family Church and the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post 55.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Church.

Pallbearers will be Paul Dabney, Paul Schultze Kenny Glascock, Kenny Caldwell, Pete Galluzzio and Harold White Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harold White Sr. and Daljet Singh.

Faye Presley

MONROE CITY ­ Martha Fayetta (Faye) Presley, 37, of Monroe City and formerly of the Philadelphia community, died Jan. 23, 2000, in Monroe City of undetermined natural causes.

Funeral services for Mrs. Presley will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. The Rev. Charles Grubb will officiate. Burial will be at the Bethany Cemetery, northwest of Philadelphia.

Mrs. Presley was born Dec. 29, 1962, in Hannibal to Leslie W. and Martha M. Tallent Farris.

She was married to John Samuel Presley III on Oct. 31, 1992, in Alton, Ill. He survives.

Other survivors include her mother, Martha M. Hoody of Philadelphia; her father, of Godfrey, Ill.; two daughters, Paula Jameson of the home and Carolyn Drulard of Jerseyville, Ill.; two stepsons, Nathaniel Presley and Joseph Presley, both of the home; two brothers, Leslie Farris of Tyner, Idaho, and Sean Farris of Alton; and one sister, June Hoody of Philadelphia.

Mrs. Presley attended Marion County Elementary School in Philadelphia and was a graduate of Jerseyville High School. She was employed as a clerk for the Ice House in Monroe City. She was a Baptist by faith.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Blackford, Russell Rosser, Tony Howard, Linda Key, Randy Rader and Davey Rader.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Benge and Linda Howard.
