James William Alexander
HANNIBAL James William Alexander, 91, of Hannibal, died at 8:05 p.m. Jan. 9, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services for Mr. Alexander will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oakwood Christian Church in Hannibal. Pastor Tom Day will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Mr. Alexander was born Oct. 22, 1908, in Ralls County near Huntington to Jacob K. and Anna Bastian Alexander.
He was married to Ethel Louise Kuhns on Feb. 14, 1931, in Oakwood. She survives.
Other survivors include four children, Betty (formerly Seley) Alexander of Monroe City, Carol Haley of rural New London, Glenn Alexander of Georgetown, Mass., and Kenneth Alexander of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren, Brian Seley of Brackney, Pa., Stuart Seley of St. Louis, Lynn Johnson of Kansas City, Mo., Sean Seley of Mountain View, Calif., Brandi Lionberger of Hannibal, Joanne Goodman of Omaha, Neb., and Damon Alexander, Michael Alexander and Darren Alexander, all of the state of Texas; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Jurgens of Hannibal and Anna Ruth Cunningham of Winchester, Ill., and one brother, Robert Alexander of New London.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred S. Alexander, Albert R. Alexander, Jacob K. Alexander Jr., and an infant brother, George Alexander.
Mr. Alexander was a railway mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years. He retired from Burlington Northern in 1966. He then worked for Western Printing in Hannibal as a proofreader for six years. He also had proofread for Hannibal historians Hurley and Roberta Hagood. He was an active member of the Oakwood Christian Church since 1926 and taught the men's class in Sunday School at the church where he was a former board chairman and had served as deacon and elder.
Mr. Alexander enjoyed playing golf at the American Legion Golf Club and was always willing to lend a hand if he learned help was needed. He was a graduate of Hannibal High School and attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home.
Memorials may be to the Oakwood Christian Church or to World Vision Mission for Hungry Children.
Pallbearers will be Sean Seley, Brian Seley, B.G. Brown, Jim Glover, David Griffith, Colin Suchland, Robert Alexander and Steven Alexander.
Ethel G. Dean
MONROE CITY Ethel Ganelle Dean, 95, of Monroe City and formerly of Mexico, died at 4:52 p.m. Dec. 9, 2000, at Monroe City Manor Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. The Rev. Steve Goughnour will officiate. Burial will be at St. Jude Cemetery in Monroe City.
Mrs. Dean was born Oct. 21, 1904, in Kansas City, Mo., to Harry and Mary Beatrice Keyes Long.
She was married to William B. (Ike) Gibbs on Nov. 29, 1942. She was later married to William Tyrell (Curly) Dean on Jan. 26, 1947, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death Oct. 26, 1982.
Survivors include four grandchildren, Terry Gibbs of Hurst, Texas, Larry Gibbs and Billy W. Gibbs, both of Moberly, and JoAnne Woodall of Monroe City; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Long of Keokuk, Iowa; and two sisters, Buelah McCreery of Eldon and Virgie Redman of Monroe City.
She was preceded in death by two sons, James Homer (Jimmie) Gibbs and William Earl (Bill) Gibbs; one sister, Hazel Avery; and one brother, Carl Long.
Mrs. Dean had been employed at Henderson Produce Co. in Monroe City.
Mrs. Dean was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mexico. She also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 4240 in Monroe City. She attended Stoutsville schools.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Monroe City Manor Care Center or the Alzheimer's Association.
Pallbearers will be Roger McCreery, Roger McCreery, David Redman, Jason Scobee, Dick Redman and Jerry Scobee.
Viola Belle Moore
BOWLING GREEN Viola Belle Moore, 94, of Bowling Green, died at 10:15 p.m. Jan. 9, 2000, at Moore Pike Nursing Home in Bowling Green.
Funeral services for Mrs. Moore will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kirks Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green. Burial will be at Ashley Fair View Cemetery in Ashley.
Mrs. Moore was born Nov. 27, 1905, to Reed and Dora Culwell Smith.
She was married to James Moore in August 1929. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Annette Moylan of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; one son, J. Gary Moore of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Janette Haley of Bowling Green; one brother, R.J. Smith of Vandalia; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Moore had been a teacher.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services at the funeral chapel.
Charles E. Akright
DAVENPORT, Iowa Charles Edward Akright, 69, of Davenport, Iowa, died Jan. 7, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services for Mr. Akright will be at 11:30 a.m. today at the Runge Mortuary & Crematory. Burial will be at the National Cemetery, Rock Island.
Mr. Akright was born Jan. 4, 1931, in Hull, Ill., to Charles L. and Alberta Menger Akright.
He married Leona Bush on July 4, 1952, in Hannibal. She survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Regina Akright; two sons, Steven Akright and James Akright; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother of Hannibal; four brothers, Richard Akright, Donald Akright and Gerald Akright, all of Hannibal, and George Akright of Hull; three sisters, Eva Lou Yates of Hannibal, Sharon Loveless of Hannibal and Mary McKay of West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by one son; two grandchildren; and his father.
Mr. Akright worked for more than 20 years at Oscar Mayer, retiring in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Ervin (Bud) Berry
MEMPHIS, Mo. Ervin W. (Bud) Berry, 84, of Memphis, Mo., and formerly of Hannibal and Shelbina, died Jan. 8, 2000, at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis. The Rev. Bob Garringer will officiate. Burial, with a military service by the Wallace W. Gillespie VFW Memorial Post No. 4958 of Memphis, will be at Brock Cemetery in Scotland County.
Mr. Berry was born May 1, 1915, to Silas Wright and Tina May Hoylman Berry.
He was married to Susie Pauline Dean on Oct. 10, 1940.
Survivors include two sons, Gene Berry of Gorin and Ernie Berry of Palmyra; one sister, Lillian Bowen of Hannibal; six grandchildren; and numerous foster children.
He was preceded in death by two sisters; and two brothers.
Mr. Berry was employed at the International Shoe Co. in Hannibal before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, where he served for three years.
After his discharge from the Army he and his wife moved to the Shelbina area, where they farmed. Later they returned to the Hannibal area and became involved in the foster care program, caring for many foster children. The family moved to Memphis in 1976.
He was a graduate of Tilden High School in the Oakwood section of Hannibal.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until time of services today at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established and memorials may be made to Gerth Funeral Service in Memphis.
Pallbearers will be Boot Bass, Bill Bass, Tracey Ross, Vernon Howard, Melissa Jordan and Pat Hudson Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Beer, William Bass, Mert McCarty, Hughie Cline and Bill Harrelson.
Elizabeth L. Bailey
HANNIBAL Elizabeth L. Bailey, 95, of Hannibal, died at 4:35 p.m., Jan. 10, 2000, at Beth-Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal.
Services for Mrs. Bailey are pending at the Smith Funeral Home.
Dorothy Harris
VANDALIA Dorothy Harris, 78, of Vandalia, died Jan. 9, 2000, at Columbia Regional Hospital in Columbia.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Holt Funeral Home in Vandalia. The Rev. Ron Franklin will officiate. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Vandalia.
Mrs. Harris was born April 21, 1921, in Montgomery County to Bill and Lizzie Romans.
She was married to Mack Harris in January 1942. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1995.
Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Shaw of St. Louis.
She was preceded in death by 10 brothers; and one sister.
Mrs. Harris was a seamstress at Bobbie Brooks before her retirement.
Mrs. Harris was a member of First Baptist Church in Vandalia.
She lived in the Vandalia-Middletown area most of her life.
Visitation will be from noon until time of services today at the funeral home.
Oral A. Cole
HANNIBAL Oral A. Cole, 85, of Barry, Ill., died at 6:37 a.m. Jan. 12, 2000, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, Ill.
Funeral services for Mr. Cole are pending at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.
Pearl Stewart
PALMYRA Pearl Stewart, 84, of Palmyra, died at 11:23 a.m. Jan. 12, 2000, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Allen Clark will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Stewart was born July 1, 1915, in Hannibal to Edward and Myrtle Scott Campfield.
She had been married to Gene Stewart.
Survivors include five daughters, Arlene Nokes, Dorothy O'Brien, Loleta Gard and Pam Stewart, all of Palmyra, and Celia Brown of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, Rudy Campfield of Palmyra; one sister, Dolly Smith of Ocean Springs, Miss.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Eugene (Bud) Stewart; five brothers; and two sisters.
Mrs. Stewart had lived in Palmyra most of her life. She was a homemaker.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Palmyra Nutrition Center or Blessing Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Michael Stewart, David O'Brien, Bill O'Brien, Brian Gard, Troy Gard and Jamie Ellis.
Gertrude E. Hagan
HANNIBAL Gertrude E. Hagan, 86, of Hannibal, died at 6 p.m. Jan. 10, 2000, at her home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic church. Father Mike Quinn will officiate. Burial will be at St. Stephens Cemetery in Indian Creek.
Mrs. Hagan was born March 8, 1913, in Stoutsville to Lambert and Lottie Elizabeth (Lida) Allgair Buckman.
She was married to Alvin E. Hagan on May 17, 1932, in Indian Creek. He preceded her in death Nov. 20, 1983.
Survivors include two daughters, Sister Alvin Marie Hagan, S.S.N.D. of Chatawa, Miss., and Sister Gertrude Marie Hagan, S.S.N.D., of Hannibal; two sons, James Matthew Hagan of Hannibal and Larry Wayne Hagan of Independence; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Lela Pat Williams of Monroe City; and one brother, Gregory Buckman of Stoutsville.
She was preceded in death by one son, Albert H. Hagan; one daughter, Teresa Gail Hagan; one grandson, Thomas R. Hagan; and three brothers, Albert Buckman in infancy, Ralph Buckman and Lon Buckman.
Mrs. Hagan was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a graduate of St. Stephens School in Indian Creek. She taught at Tewell School in Monroe County from 1930 to 1931. She was a Stanley Home Products representative for 40 years, winning many honors. She was a member of Holy Family Quilting Group; 55 Plus Club, Holy Family; Hannibal Hospice Task Group volunteers; St. Elizabeth's Auxiliary; and Blessed Sacrament Women's Club. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, sewing and other needlework and handicrafts.
Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or American Parkinson Disease Association.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Scripture Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home.
Goldie M. Mattingly
PARIS Goldie M. Mattingly, 87, of Paris, died Jan. 11, 2000, at Moberly Regional Hospital in Moberly.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mattingly will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Agnew Funeral Home in Paris. Burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Mattingly was born June 1, 1912, in Woodlawn to Victor and Ruby Parrish Legrand.
She was married to Bill Mattingly in Paris on Nov. 14, 1931. He survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Ronnie Mattingly of Columbia, Gale Mattingly of Paris and Robert Mattingly of Macon; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Gale Legrand of Peoria, Ill.; and one sister, Hazel French of Florida.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Ray Legrand; and one sister, Helen Bailey.
Mrs. Mattingly and her husband farmed until moving to Paris in 1974. She was a sales clerk at Delaney Variety Store in Paris for many years. She was a member of the Smizer Extension Club, the Salem Baptist Church and the Church WMU.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
