Arthur L. Garrison
Arthur L (Art) Garrison, Sr., age 71, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 17, 1999, at his home in Little Falls after a long illness.
Funeral services were held March 22 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. Loren Olson officiating. Burial was in the Cushing Union Cemetery in Cushing, MN.
Arthur was born March 5, 1928, in Cushing, to the late Henry and Mary (Sharon) Garrison. He grew up and attended country school in the Cushing area. After completing his schooling, Arthur enlisted in the United States Army in 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1952. Among his many commendations, he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Korean War. He served on the Little Falls Fire Department of 25 years, with one term as chief, and one as President of the Firemen’s Association. Arthur was a member of the Army National Guard, American Legion Post 346, V.F.W. Post #1112. He most recently retired from Hennepin Paper Mill in Little Falls. Arthur enjoyed deer hunting on the family land near Big Fork, MN, fishing, picking agates, riding his Honda Goldwing motorcycle, and spending time this family watching ball games.
Survivors include his sons, Art Jr. Garrison and wife Denise of Deer Lodge, MT, Wes Garrison and wife Corrine of Little Falls, Mark Garrison and wife Vicky of Kasson, MN, Ken of Little Falls; sisters, Mayme Manlick of Little Falls, Kate Dudley of Sturgis, SD, and Grace Maas of Sturgis, SD; brothers, Carl Garrison and Lloyd Garrison of Little Falls; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; many nieces and nephews and a special friend, Beverly Kastreba, of Little Falls.
Jon A. Determan
Jon A. Determan, age 40, a resident of rural Swanville, MN, died March 30, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
A memorial service was held April 3 at the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville.
Jon A. Determan was born on December 13, 1958 in Stillwater, MN to the late Robert and Shirley (Garner) Determan. He grew up on a farm near Swanville and graduated from Swanville High School in 1977. He was united in marriage to Penny Canfield on October 11, 1980, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. The couple made their home on a farm near Swanville. Jon worked at Prairie Packing in Long Prairie, MN, Jennie-O-Foods in Melrose, MN, as a supervisor for 13 years, and for the past five years, at Polar Tank Trailer in Opole. Jon enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and art - especially drawing and painting. He dearly loved his family and his children.
Survivors include his wife Penny Determan of Swanville; son, Jerimiah Determan at home; daughters, Virginia Determan at home and Jillian Determan at home; brothers, Mike Determan and wife Deb of Little Falls and Scott Determan and wife Roxanne of Browerville, MN; sister, Denise Mezera and husband John of Buffalo, MN; uncle, Donald Determan of Long Prairie, Mn; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Harold J. Carlson
Harold J. Carlson, age 70, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 30, 1999, at his home.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church in Little Falls with Rev. Steven Priola and Rev. Wayne Burggraff officiating. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.
Harold J. Carlson was born August 3, 1928, in Brainerd, MN, to the late John and Jessie (Bergner) Carlson. He grew up in Brainerd and graduated from the Brainerd High School. He attended Brainerd Community College for two years. He was united in marriage to Catherine A. Norton on June 28, 1952, in the First Baptist Church in Little Falls. He worked at Brainerd Heating for two years. In 1960, the couple came to reside in Little Falls and Harold worked at Metalcraft Roofing and Heating as the office manager for 36 years, until retiring in 1990. He also worked as a security guard at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls from 1981 to 1990. He was one of the original Police Reserve Officers and served as the chief of the Reserves. He also worked as a Special Police Officer for the Little Falls Police Department and a Special Deputy for the Morrison County Sheriff’s office. Harold was elected to the Little Falls City Council and served as Council President. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Little Falls, and served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school treasurer, church treasurer, church clerk, deacon and usher. He was on the church board in 1974 that decided to begin a Christian school in the First Baptist Church, and then served on the North Star Christian Academy School Board. Harold enjoyed camping and hiking.
Survivors include his wife Catherine (Katie) Carlson of Little Falls; son, David W. Carlson of Waynesville, MO; daughters, Diana K. Hammerbeck and husband George of Little Falls and Debra J. Burggraff and husband Rev. Wayne of Lebanon, PA; brothers, twin - Herbert J. Carlson and wife, Laurel of Cushing, MN, Frank Carlson and wife Shuizko of Vasallia, CA and Michael Carlson and wife Mary of St. Peter, MN; sisters, Dorothy Frasl of Minneapolis, MN, Charlotte Burnet of Prior, OK and Alice Mahron and husband Ron of Lutz, FL; brothers-in-law, Elmer Lang and John Ferry; grandchildren, Andy Carlson, George and Christopher Hammer-beck, Tony, Becky, Shelly and Ben Burggraff; great-grandson, Alex Carlson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marian Lang and Karen Ferry; brothers, Robert and Carl Carlson and granddaughter, Amy Carlson.
Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren and the Little Falls Police Reserves.
Casketbearers were Gary Jarvis, Robert Verley, Rick Walker, Keith Majaski, Dennis Bjorn and Douglas VanOrsdel.
Cathryn Kastanek
Cathryn M. Kastanek, age 74, a resident of rural Hillman, MN, died May 30, 1999, of heart failure in her garden with her family at her side.
Mass of Christian Burial was held June 2 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, MN, with Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Cathryn (Gulden) Kastanek was born November 24, 1924, in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County, MN, to the late George and Eleanor (Dietz) Gulden. At the age of 10 and one-half months, she moved with her family to Pierz. She started grade school in October, 1929, in District 55 and was the first student of District 55 to graduate from high school. She went on to St. Gabriel’s School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1945. Cathryn interned at Gillette Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, and at the regional hospitals in both Redwood Falls, MN, and Fergus Falls, MN. She joined the Indian Service in Arizona and New Mexico and worked with the Navajo Indian Nation. She then worked at Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Portland, OR, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brainerd, MN, and finally at the Lutheran Care Center (Lutheran Senior Citizens Home) in Little Falls, MN, from 1964 until her retirement in 1989. Outside of her career in nursing, Cathryn was a housewife and homemaker. She and her husband, Jrwin, lived on the family farm in Hillman Township since their marriage on July 2, 1951. Cathryn was active as a 4-H leader for the Center Valley Dairylanders and volunteered at the Morrison County Extension Service and the Minnesota 4-H program at the state level. In recent years, she volunteered as an indexer of obituaries for the Morrison County Historical Society of which she also served on the board of directors and as treasurer. She was a volunteer at the Morrison County Public Health Department and at the Harmony House in Pierz. Cathryn was active in the Minnesota cemetery documentation project, specifically at St. John’s in Lastrup, MN. She also researched the history of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hillman. Cathryn was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz and Little Falls VFW Auxiliary Post 1112. She was also an active member of the Minnesota Historical Society, Czechoslovakian Genealogical Society and the German-Bohemian Heritage Society. Cathryn’s hobbies were reading, genealogical research/family history, traveling, writing, quilting and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Jrwin Kastanek of Hillman; daughters, Colleen Kastanek of North Branch, MN, and Charolotte Kastanek of Sartell, MN; son, Allan Kastanek of St. Paul, MN; grandchildren, Ligeia Cholensky, Stephanie Cholensky, Annie Kastanek and John Kastanek; great-grandson, Jakob Kastanek; sister, Leora Wilkes of Pierz and brother, LeRoy Gulden of Pierz.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Lucy Krystosek
(Mrs. Thomas) Lucy Krystosek, age 80, a resident of Royalton, MN, died May 30, 1999, at her residence.
Mass of Christian Burial was held June 2 at Holy Trinity Church in Royalton with Father Laurn Virnig officiating and Father Leo Otto and Father Paul Zylla concelebrating. Burial was at Holy Trinity Parish Cemetery.
Lucy was born February 8, 1919, to Ludwig and Julia (Posch) Biniek in Opole, MN. She was united in marriage to Thomas Krystosek on May 1, 1944, at St. Stanislaus Church in Bowlus, MN. They farmed in Bellevue Township all their lives. She was the Sacristan for Holy Trinity Church in Royalton. Lucy was a member of the Christian Mothers and 3rd Order of St. Francis.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas of Royalton; sons, Anthony Krystosek and wife Cecilia of Royalton and Alois Krystosek and wife Susan of Royalton; daughter, Carol Krystosek of Royalton; sister, Magdalen Brockert of Long Lake, MN, and grandchildren, Samuel, Nicole, Catie, Anne and Daniel Krystosek of Royalton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ludwig and Julia Biniek; brothers, Robert Czech, Leo Czech, Theodore Biniek, Bernard Biniek and Benedict Biniek and sisters, Veronica Fussy, Sophie Piechota and Loretta Siedlecki.
Casketbearers were Clarence Czech, Louis Fussy, Jerry Hubner, Sam Fussy, Walter Biniek and Ted Biniek.
Bertha Luella Wiese
Bertha Luella Wiese, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Blue Earth, MN, died June 1, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held June 5 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roland Jennings officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.
Bertha was born March 8, 1911, in Interior, SD, to the late Levi and Dora (Engles) Rulon. She grew up and attended country school in Interior. At the age of 18, Bertha moved to Luverne, MN, where she met Herbert Wiese. She was united in marriage to Herbert on October 19, 1935, in Canton, SD. The couple resided in the Luverne area after their marriage. In 1954, the couple moved to Blue Earth, MN, where they lived until 1971. In 1971, the couple moved to the Little Falls area. Herbert passed away in September, 1976. Bertha continued living in Little Falls where she resided until her death. Bertha was a member of the Little Falls Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, spending time with her family and volunteering at the Little Falls Senior Center.
Survivors include her son, Jim Wiese, of St. George, UT; daughter, Carol Ahlin and husband, John of Little Falls; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert in September 1976; brothers, William and Frank Rulon; and, sister, Julia Johnson.
Lucille G. (Pfeffer) Lehmann
Lucille G. (Pfeffer) Lehmann, age 76, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 31, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held on June 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial will be June 7 in St. Paul’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Sauk Centre.
Lucille was born July 13, 1922, in Bancroft, IA to the late Albert and Lucy (Hatten) Bisaillon. At an early age she moved with her family to Sebeka, MN. Her family later moved to Osakis, MN. In 1930, she moved to the Lyman Prairie area, south of Sauk Centre, MN. She attended the Lyman Prairie Country School until her freshman year at which time she transferred to the Brooten High School. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1940. Lucille moved to Little Falls in 1955, where she was first employed at the Pine Edge Inn. In 1968, she started working at the Morrison County Social Services office, retiring in 1982. She moved to Pine River, MN in 1985, residing there until 1988. Lucille moved to Carlos, MN and, in 1997, returned to Little Falls, where she resided until her death. Lucille was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, and was a past member and past president of the Little Falls Legion Auxiliary. She was active in the Carlos Senior Citizens Club and was the volunteer site manager at the Sportsman Cafe in Carlos.
Survivors include her sons, Donald Pfeffer of Little Falls, Roman Pfeffer of Felton, DE; daughters, Jean Johannes and husband, Ron of Aurora, CO, Pat Tedman of Victoria, MN, Marilyn Kummet and husband, John, of Baxter, MN, JoAnne Reis and husband, Gary of Grand Junction, CO; Rosie Reis and husband Greg of Grand Junction, CO; sister, LaVonne Ragan of North Platte, NE; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Constance Beack
Constance “Connie” Beack, age 69, a resident of Hillman, MN, died May 20, 1999, at her home after a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services were May 24 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ramey, MN, with the Rev. John Ramsbacher officiating. Burial was in the Lone Pine Cemetery in Morrill, MN.
Connie Beack was born September 30, 1929, in Rice, MN, to Henry and Florence (Dalton) Rickhoff. She married Art Beack, October 11, 1952, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Ramey. The couple had lived and farmed all of their lives in Morrill Township, rural Morrison County. She had cooked for weddings and anniversaries for over 30 years. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ramey.
Survivors include her husband Art; son and daughter, Ron and Donette of Hillman, Linda and Rich of Buckman, MN, brothers and sisters, Don of Lindstrom, MN, Cliff of Aitkin, MN, Henry Jr., of Anoka, MN, Betty Ponder of Blaine, MN, Lavonne Bishop, Fairmont, MN; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers were Jeremy Beack, Gary Beack, Chad Pohlkamp, Todd Pohlkamp, Troy Popp, and Jim Brown.
