Myrtle Miller

Myrtle M. Miller, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 9, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held March 12 at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Martin Langemo officiating. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Myrtle was born November 23, 1909, on a farm near Royalton, MN, to the late John and Anna (Anderson) Noggle. She spent the first seven years of her life on the farm near Royalton. Following her mother’s death, she moved with her family to a farm near Camp Ripley and then to a farm in the Freedhem, MN, area. She was united in marriage to Warren Miller in June of 1931 in Little Falls. The couple made their home in Little Falls where Myrtle resided up to the time of her death. She was a devoted wife and mother working in the home all of her life. She enjoyed traveling with her husband in their travel trailer, her garden and flowers, crocheting, yard work, and was often found baking. Myrtle enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Warren of Little Falls; daughters, Charlotte Peterson of Little Falls and Carol Saulter and husband Art of Little Falls; sister, Eleanor Boser of Little Falls; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Cecil “Buck,” Forrest “Pat” and Chester Noggle; sisters, Florence Bracken, Gladys Bollig and Vinnie Wedin and son-in-law, Thomas Peterson.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Jeff and Tim Peterson, Randy, Dan and Rick Saulter and great-grandson, Corey Rudnicki.

Marie Virnig

Marie M. Virnig, age 92, a resident of Lastrup, MN, died March 9, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 12 at St. John’s Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup.

Marie was born March 17, 1905, in Pierz, Morrison County, MN, to the late Bernard and Mary (Bergerhausen) Block. She grew up in the Pierz area and attended country school. She attended St. Cloud Teachers College and taught in the Pierz and Lastrup area. She was united in marriage to Peter W. Virnig on August 4, 1924, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Following their marriage, Marie taught school for about two years. The couple farmed in Granite Township, Morrison County, MN, east of Pierz for more than 40 years, retiring in 1966. After the couple’s retirement, Marie and Peter continued to live in Granite Township. Peter died on May 29, 1990. After his death, Marie lived in Granite Township until November of 1995 when she became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa, residing there until her death. She was a member of St. John’s Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup and a 50-year member of the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include sons and daughters, Wilfred and wife Dolores of Hillman, MN, Helen Dehn and husband Roland of St. Louis Park, MN, Ronald and wife Doris of Hillman, MN, Marie Griswold and husband Richard of Winona, MN, Herbert and wife Sally of Roseville, MN, and Vernon and wife Mary of Pierz; daughter-in-law, Elnora Virnig of Long Prairie, MN; 30 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter W. Virnig; son, Urban in 1989; parents; brothers, Gerhard, Henry, William, Benjamin and Herman Block; sisters, Francis Zak, Helen Nagel and Josephine Merkling.

Casketbearers were Patrick, Jason, Michael and Kyle Virnig, Kelsey and Darcy Dehn.

John Manlick

John E. “Jack” Manlick, age 78, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 10, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held March 13 at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Martin Langemo officiating. Interment with military rites were provided by Little Falls American Legion Post 76 at the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Jack was born August 20, 1919, in Sauk Centre, MN, to the late Henry and Minnie (Billman) Manlick. He moved to Morrison County when he was 10 years old. He was united in marriage to Mayme Garrison on July 5, 1938. Except for two years in the Cushing, MN, area, the Manlicks have lived in Little Falls. Following his military service, he drove truck and hauled freight for the same produce company for 14 years. He joined the Little Falls Fire Department where he served in regular duty for eight years, part of which he was captain. In 1957, he left the fire department, staying on as a volunteer for 22 years. He worked for Metalcraft for 33 years after which time he retired. On his days off from Metalcraft, he worked for McGowan Welding and the Thompson Funeral Home. He was elected to the Little Falls City Council in 1962 and served all but two years up to 1992. Jack enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, woodworking, taking drives in the country with his wife to look for wildlife and especially his family and grandchildren. His family will always remember him as “Mr. Fix It,” having been called upon by them in many instances to fix just about everything and anything. Jack was a member of Little Falls American Legion Post 46, Forty and Eight and Little Falls Moose Lodge 1587.

Survivors include his wife, Mayme of Little Falls; daughters, Mary McNeese and husband Roy of Mammoth Springs, AR, Betty Pflepsen and husband John of Brainerd, MN, Joan Manlick of Milwaukee, WI, Judy Shinabarger and husband Leland of Swanville, MN, Debra Manlick of Little Falls and Diane Kowalczyk and companion Jim Balaski of Little Falls; special friends, Carol Smies and Theresa Wolak; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lyle and Ralph Manlick; sister, Edna Dickson; and nephew, Dennis Manlick.

Honorary pallbearers were the Little Falls Fire Department and Little Falls American Legion Post 76.

Casketbearers will be grandchildren Patty Holmquist, Scott Shinabarger, Stephanie and Amy Pflepsen, James and Jason Kowalczyk and Alicia and Perry DesRosier.

Harold Hanson

Harold Oliver Hanson, age 77, a resident of Motley, MN, died March 9, 1998, at the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena, MN.

Funeral services were held March 13 at Swan Valley Lutheran Church in Leader, MN, with Reverend Robert Twiton officiating. Burial was in the Swan Valley Cemetery.

Harold was born April 3, 1920, in Meadowbrook Township of Cass County, MN, to Carl and Anna (Hansen) Hanson. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. On October 30, 1941, he married Lorraine Roach in Bessemer, MI. Together they farmed and raised their family in Byron Township. Harold was a lifelong member of Swan Valley Lutheran Church, served on the Swan Valley Cemetery Board, the Byron Town Board and the local school board. He enjoyed hunting and socializing with the neighbors.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; a son, Randy and wife Audrey Hanson of Motley; three daughters, Janet Brademan and husband Jerry of Bemidji, MN, Patricia Tarbell and husband Jim of Deer River, MN, and Phyllis Brown and husband Kevin of Motley; a brother, Vernon Hanson of Creston, WA; a sister, Agnes Mertens and husband Floyd of Staples, MN; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; two brothers, Edgar and William Hanson; a sister, Olive Hanson; and two daughters, Margaret and Kathleen Hanson.

Joseph ‘Joe’ Schuur

Joseph “Joe” Schuur, age 63, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 6, 1998 at Destin, FL.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 13, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN, with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Joseph was born March 7, 1934, in Fulda, MN, to the late Jacob and Gladys (VanDerVeen) Schuur. He was raised in Fulda, where he attended school. Joe was united in marriage with Rita Copa on July 11, 1953, in Little Falls. They lived in the Fridley area for a number of years where Joe worked as a laborer-foreman for Bor-Son Construction. He was a member of Local #563 Labor Union. He enjoyed fishing and working.

Survivors include his wife Rita of Little Falls; one daughter, Deborah Zinniel of Maple Grove, MN; two sons, William and (wife) Patty Schuur of Little Falls and Joseph “J” Schuur of Fridley; four brothers, Ralph Schuur of Mississippi, Junior Schuur of Centura, WI, Chuck Schuur of Fulda and Mike Schuur of Waseca, MN; four sisters, Katherine Tate of Kansas City, Sena Bellinger also of Kansas City, Shirley Workman of Audubon, MN and Elsie Lintner of Little Falls; three grandchildren, Angela, Brad and Sam; and one great-grandchild, Blake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one son, Jimmy.

Casketbearers were Tony and Mark Copa, Roger and Gary Schuur, Gordy Lintner, and Kenny Bellinger.

Frances Litke

Frances Litke, age 76, a resident of Harding, MN, died March 16, 1998, at her home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held March 20 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was at the parish cemetery.

Frances was born February 7, 1922, in Raynesford, MT, to the late Michael and Anna (Fiesel) Bieganek. At the age of seven the family moved to Harding where she graduated from the eighth grade. Frances then attended St. Francis High School in Little Falls. Following high school she attended business college in St. Cloud. After college she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC for a year. On July 19, 1944, Frances was united in marriage to John N. Litke at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding. While John was in the Navy she worked in Richmond, VA, and Boston, MA. Following his discharge from the Navy they started a business in Harding. They stayed happily married for 53 years. Frances was very active in the church as a religion teacher for 13 years, and sang in the church choir for 14 years. She was also in the Holy Cross Mission Circle. Frances was the Treasurer for the village of Harding for 15 years. She loved to crochet afghans, other hobbies included stamp collecting, bowling, going to the lake and watching her children and grandchildren play.

Survivors include her husband, John of Harding; five sons, Terry and wife Carol of Dawson, MN, Michael and wife Joy of Brainerd, MN, Gary and wife Lu of Forest Lake, MN, Dennis and wife Diane of Brainerd and Glenn of St. Cloud, MN; two daughters, Lois Johnson of Castle Rock, WA and Bonnie Schiller and husband John Baxter of MN; three sisters, Helen Burchett of Nevada, Violet Westlund of Maple Grove, MN, and Carol Nelson of Willmar, MN; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, John and three brothers, Norman, Jerome and Lawrence Bieganek.

Casketbearers were Robert Litke, Shane Range, David Litke, Tommy Johnson, Ricky Lucken, Joey Johnson and Wesley Schiller. Honorary casketbearers were Teresa Mitlyng, Lisa Litke, Rose Litke, Holly Schiller, Elizabeth Litke, Cheyenne Litke, Katelyn Litke, Rhonda Litke and Cassandra Litke.
