Alma Baggenstoss
Alma Anna Baggenstoss, age 85, a resident of Upsala, MN, died June 27, 1997, at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN.
Funeral services were held July 1 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Upsala with the Rev. Richard Bolling officiating. Burial was in the Upsala Memorial Cemetery.
Alma Anna Baggenstoss was born August 4, 1911, in Kraine Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to the late John and Anna (Sodowsky) Christen. She was confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Roscoe, SD on July 12, 1925. She worked as a maid for a professor from St. Cloud Teachers College for several years until she was united in marriage to Elmer Baggenstoss on September 26, 1933, at the Evangelical Ebenezer Church in Albany. After their marriage the couple spent three years in Hill City, MN, and then moved to Upsala where they farmed until 1974 when they moved to their present home in Upsala. Alma worked at the Upsala Cafe as a cook and later at the Upsala School for 11 years in janitorial services and as a dishwasher. She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Upsala. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, playing cards, dancing and especially her family.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer; son, Milford Baggenstoss and wife Joyce of Jordan, MN; daughters, Shirley Primus and husband Joe of Bowlus, MN, and Darlene Klug and husband James of Minnetonka, MN; sister, Anna Laing of St. Joseph, MN; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Ernest, Paul, Benjamin, Harold and Harry Christen, and sisters, Martha Schliecher and Rose Peterson.
Honorary pallbearers were Sue Hughes, Julie Primus, Jill Primus, and Jill Breckner. Casketbearers were Steven Klug, Joe Primus, Chad Primus, John Hughes, Becky Lee and Bonnie Dorn.
Ruth Emma Kriefall
Ruth Emma Kriefall, age 80, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of Buckman Township and Royalton, MN, died June 27, 1997, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.
Funeral services were held June 30 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dixville, MN, with the Rev. John Ramsbacher officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Ruth Emma Kriefall was born January 25, 1917, in Buckman Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Leo and Helen “Krause” Kuschel. She grew up in Buckman Township, and attended country school. She was united in marriage to Alvin “Jim” Kriefall on August 31, 1937, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dixville. The couple farmed in Buckman Township. After her husband’s death on January 15, 1973, Ruth moved to Royalton. She worked as a house- keeper and cook at Bea’s Cafe in Royalton. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dixville, enjoyed gardening, jigsaw puzzles and bingo.
Survivors include a son, Marvin Kriefall and wife Sherrill of Sauk Rapids, MN; daughters, Marjory Guck and husband Lawrence of Royalton and Marlene Bragelman of Sauk Rapids, MN; sister, Esther Sauer of Royalton; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Richard Kuschel, and a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Eden.
Honorary pallbearers were Kathryn Kahl, Susan Koenig, Christine Eden, Bonita Bragelman, Betty Wyatt and Karen Fussy.
Casketbearers were Scott and Kurt Kriefall, Everett and Brian Bragelman, James, Steven and Gregory Guck.
Raymond Peterson
Raymond William Peterson, age 80, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 29, 1997, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, MN.
Funeral services were held July 2 at the Little Falls Alliance Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Roland Jenning officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.
Raymond was born March 31, 1917, in Duluth, MN, to the late William and Christine (Peterson) Peterson. At the age of four years his family moved to Cotton, MN, where he grew up and attended Cotton High School, graduating from the class of 1935. He was united in marriage to Lillian M. Messerschmidt on August 28, 1937, in Cotton. The couple lived in Cotton until 1941 where he worked as a carpenter. William and Lillian moved to Duluth for eight years and he worked at the Duluth Brass Works. They later moved back to Cotton and he continued his carpentry work until 1971 when they moved to Little Falls where he worked with his son, Dale, in Peterson Construction until his retirement in 1986. Following retirement he continued doing small carpentry jobs and craft work. He attended Little Falls Alliance Church, was past governor of the Moose Lodge and former manager of the Little Falls Golf Course Club House. He enjoyed flowers, gardening, woodworking, stain glass work, hunting and the outdoors, but especially cooking fried chicken for relatives, friends and neighbors over a campfire.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian; son, Dale and wife Jan of Little Falls; daughters, Lori VoPatek and husband Ken of Brainerd, Lou Ann Rands and husband Gene of Cotton, Linda Hietala and husband Dale of Duluth and LaRae Bakke and husband Paul of Anoka, MN; sisters, Florence Peterson of Cotton, Helen Johnson and husband Walter of Duluth, Mary Peterson and husband Ray of Duluth and Edna Soderlund and husband David of Cotton; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edwin and Clarence Peterson; sisters, Jennie Lorentzson and Elsie Bjorklund and granddaughter, Kari Schuster.
Casketbearers were Pete and Tom Brutcher, Bill Osberg, Ray Meyhoff, Ed Drong and Duane Noble.
Donald Kniefel
Donald William Kniefel, age 73, a resident of Owatonna, MN, died July 2, 1997 at the Owatonna Hospital.
The funeral service took place at St. John Lutheran Church on July 5 with the Reverend Dennis Pettyjohn officiating. Interment was at Meadow Ridge Cemetery.
Donald was born January 2, 1924, in Owatonna to Joseph and Anna (Kriesel) Kniefel. He was married to LaDonna (Abbe) Kniefel on June 16, 1946 in Medford, MN. Donald attended school in Medford and graduated from Medford High School. Following school he married LaDonna Abbe and they farmed together until 1989 when they moved into Owatonna. Donald served on the Rural Telephone Co. Board, Medford Creamery Board, Land-O-Lakes District Board, Central Co-op Board, was a 4-H Leader, and a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling, and woodworking.
Survivors include wife, LaDonna (Abbe) Kniefel; daughters, Sharon (James) Schroeder of Clinton, MN, Vicky (Craig) Steinkraus of Little Falls, MN, Sandy Moder of Winona, MN, Bonnie (James) Schneider of Osage Beach, MO; sister, Margaret Brady of Owatonna and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.
Robert Hoskins
Robert (Bob) Hoskins, age 62, a resident of Hillman, MN, died July 3, 1997.
Funeral services were held July 8 at the Lakeview Community Church in Hillman. Interment was in the Lakeview Community Cemetery.
Bob was born to Clarence and Jessie Hoskins in Hillman on July 14, 1934. He grew up in the Hillman area and attended Hillman Country School and Onamia High School. He was united in marriage to Shirley Mott at the Methodist Church in Onamia, MN, on April 12, 1952. To this union they were blessed with 12 children. After marriage, the couple made their home in Onamia, then moved to Wayzata, MN, moved back to Hillman and finally made their home in Milaca, MN. Bob worked for Twin City Milk Co. as a cottage cheese maker. He also farmed in the Hillman area. Bob also did carpentry work until his retirement in 1996. His hobbies included work, horseshoes, deer hunting, driving his John Deere and long phone calls to his family.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; nine sons, Robert and wife Nancy of Princeton, MN, Greg and wife Gail of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Brian and wife Kaylene of Grundy Center, IA, Steven and wife Marcy of Bock, MN, Tim and wife Sheryl of Roy, WA; Scott and wife Sue, Bruce and wife Michele and Dennis and wife Kelli, all of Milaca and John and wife Kim of Hillman; three daughters, Debbie Siemers and husband Al of Elk River, MN, Sally Olson and husband Norman of Plymouth, MN, and Penny Jernburg and husband Randy of Bloomington, MN; thirty-five grandchildren, Jason and Stacie Hoskins of Dubuque, IA, Jake and Gretta Hoskins of Milaca, Jennifer Hoskins of Princeton, Joanie and Dennis Aleckson of Zimmerman, MN, Scott, Jr., and Sherri of Milaca, Greg II and Garred and Genessa Hoskins, all of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Anna Lovins of Watertown, Nicholas, Joseph and Katie Hoskins, all of Grundy Center, IA, Michael and Matthew Hoskins of Bock, Brandon Jesom and Casey Hoskins of Roy, WA, Becky, Heather, Ashley, McKenzie, Melissa, Kayla, Trevor and Mason Hoskins, all of Milaca, Brianna, Riley and Levi Hoskins of Hillman, Sarah and Christopher Siemers of Elk River, Ryan, Travis and Drew Olson, all of Plymouth and Chelsey and Olivia Jernburg of Bloomington; seven great-grandchildren, Jake Hoskins, Jr., Dylan and Mitchell Klumper, Jenna Lovins, Emily Wadding and Austin and Andrew Aleckson; three brothers, Howard and wife Lorna of Arizona, Alfred and wife Pat of Hillman and Jerry and wife Lois of Baxter, MN; two sisters, Ester Fritz and husband Lester of Baxter and Margie Johnson and husband Glen of Alaska; sister-in-law, Phyllis Hoskins and father-in-law, Forrest Mott.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lyle, Vernon and Allen; sister, Helen and mother-in-law, LaVern Mott.
Gordon Johnson
Gordon V. Johnson, age 69, a resident of rural Pierz, MN, died July 3, 1997, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Memorial services were held July 8 at the Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz with Rev. Lynn Brotten officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley, MN.
Gordon was born September 22, 1927, in Minneapolis to the late Victor and Hattie (Walstad) Johnson. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High School. After completing high school, Gordon married Ardath Runyon in March, 1953. Gordon entered the Navy and served for three years. Gordon attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. After graduating from Dunwoody, Gordon was a machinist for Kurt Manufacturing in Minneapolis for 34 years. After retiring in 1989, Gordon enjoyed spending the winter months in Texas with his wife Ardath. Gordon also enjoyed his grandchildren, showing them new creations. He loved woodworking, camping and fishing. Gordon was a true outdoorsman. He enjoyed fixing anything that needed to be fixed.
Survivors include his wife Ardath Johnson of Pierz; son, Dean Johnson of Blaine, MN; daughters, Susan Elliott and husband William of Blaine and Cheryl Osterberg and husband Gene of Coon Rapids, MN, and grandchildren, Brandon and Nicholas Johnson of Blaine, Brian, Kevin and Scott Elliot of Blaine and Jake and Jason Osterberg of Coon Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Anna Rieke
Anna Elizabeth Rieke, age 81, a resident of Pierz, MN, died July 4, 1997, at the St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.
Funeral services were held July 7 at the St. Mary’s Villa Chapel with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Anna was born August 14, 1915, in Hillman Township to the late Michael Priglmeier and Katherine (Meyer) Priglmeier. She lived in Hillman Township from her birth until entering St. Mary’s Villa in July, 1985. She married Charles Rieke December 19, 1967, at the St. Joseph’s parish house in Pierz.
Survivors include two nieces, Lorraine and Florence Britz; four nephews, John, Richard, Frank and Joe Huver; grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were John Huver, Frank Huver, Leroy Rieke, Robert Block, Allen Schraut and Melvin Schraut.
