Nevenka “Nan’’ Hudy, 82, former of Chisholm and Wilmington, Del., died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Chisholm, the daughter of the late Mile “Michael’’ and Lubica (Orlich) Loncar. She graduated from Hibbing Junior College, now Hibbing Community College. On July 14, 1947, she married James Andrew Hudy of Aurora and Wilmington, Del.
Survivors include three sons, Roger (Gail) Hudy of Damascus, Md., Paul (Carla) Hudy of Pittsboro, N.C., and Mark (Stephanie) Hudy of Harrisonburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Rudy (Elizabeth) Hudy of Hampstead, Md., Christopher Hudy of Germantown, Md., Staci Hudy and Katrina Hudy, both of Harrisonburg; one great-grandchild, Rylan Hudy of Hampstead, Md.; two step-grandchildren, Jeremy Cody and LeAnne Justice; two step-great-grandchildren, Kalei Cody and Cale Justice, all of Sylva, N.D.; two brothers-in-law, George Klasna and family of Buhl and Robert Hudy and family of Hoyt Lakes; and three sisters-in-law, Polly Loncar and family of Hibbing, Mary Margaret D’Orazio and family and Carol Motsinger and family, all of Cathedral City, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Andrew Hudy, in December 1986; her sister, Grozda Klasna of Buhl; and her brother, Brono Loncar of Chisholm.
George N. Curry
George N. Curry, 76, SERVICES: A celebration of George’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Nathan Sager officiating. George N. Curry, 76, of Mountain Iron died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.
George was born in Duluth on June 29, 1929, to John and Matilda Curry. He graduated from the Mountain Iron High School in 1947. He proudly served his country during the Korean War, as an air traffic controller in the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1952. George married Lois Kiiskinen on Aug. 18, 1956. They made their home in Virginia. He was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, US West, retiring in 1990. Throughout his life, George was actively involved in many sports pertaining to the youth in Virginia. He was an active member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, especially enjoying the Men In Mission Group. He was a past member of the Lions Club, and had served on the board of the Range Cooperatives Federation. He was a member of the American Legion Post 239 in Virginia, and was a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. George and his wife, Lois, enjoyed many years of travel during their retirement. They were past members of the Winnebago-Itasca Travelers and the Winnebago Northwoods group. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was known for his great sense of humor and love of life.
Survivors include his loving wife, Lois; two sons, Steven Curry of Eagan, Minn., and Patrick (Molly Reber) Curry of Helena, Mont.; a granddaughter, Chelsey Curry, of Helena, Mont.; a brother, Claude Curry; and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia Curry, Mary (Bert) Torgersrud, Frances (Bill) Banks and Margaret (Ray) Prater; and his parents, John and Matilda Curry.
Cyril J. Lopp
Cyril J. Lopp, 88, SERVICES: Memorial Mass will be held at a later date in Gilbert.
Cyril J. Lopp, 88, of Reno, Nev., passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at his home.
He was born July 22, 1917, in Gilbert to the late Anton and Pauline Lopp. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1934 and attended Virginia Junior College and the University of Minnesota. He served with the Navy during World War II. He was married to Tommy Lee Steele.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Patricia (Bert) Parlee, in Mill Valley, Calif.; his sister, Phyllis Kukar; sister-in-law, Eileen Lopp; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommy; and brother, Eugene Lopp.
Luella M. Shaw
Luella M. Shaw, 86, SERVICES: Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen, Minn., with the Rev. Jeff McCracken officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Twin Valley, Minn. and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Bethlehem West Cemetery in Ulen. Local arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.
Luella M. Shaw, 86, of Duluth, formerly of Ulen, died Friday, March 10, 2006, at the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth.
She was born on June 21, 1919, in Borup, Minn., to Edmond and Blanche (MacNamara) Vincent and grew up there. On Oct. 27, 1941, she married Joseph E. Shaw in Moorhead, Minn. They had lived in Ulen for over 40 years. Luella was a homemaker.
She moved to Tower in 1992 and later moved to Hoyt Lakes.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen. Luella enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting and cooking, but was most happy surrounded by her family and many friends.
Luella is survived by four children, Ardis (Dennis) Crusch of Levenworth, Wash., Joseph (Trudi) Shaw of Soudan, David (Mary) Shaw of Duluth, and Daniel (Chris) Shaw of Aurora; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Bengston of New Rockford, N.D., and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph in 1985; four sisters, Edna, Ila, Ruth and Virginia; and four brothers, Donald, Earl, Edmond and Paul.
Ann Marie Samppala
Ann Marie Samppala, 86, SERVICES: Visitation will be one hour prior to the 2 p.m. Memorial Service Monday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. John O’Donnell will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.
Ann Marie Samppala, 86, of Mountain Iron, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Ann was born on June 7, 1919, to Matt and Mary (Vereletich) Rebrovich in Eveleth where she was raised and attended school. She was united in marriage to Walfred Samppala on Feb. 13, 1937. Ann worked for the Cluett Peabody Shirt Factory for seven years, Pamida and did some janitorial work at the Mountain Iron High School. She enjoyed making potica and loved to cook and do crafts.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly (Fred) Flankey of Lake Vermilion-Cook; three grandchildren, Steven (Laurie) of Clarksville, Tenn., Todd (Carrie) of East Bethel, Minn. and Dale of Duluth; two great-grandchildren, Stacy and Amber; sister, Rose LaLonde of Bloomington, Minn.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, son Walfred “Sonny” and four brothers and three sisters.

Quinn Arthur Solem Sr., age 71, of Side Lake, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospice in Duluth.
He was born Sept. 14, 1934, in Ely to Arthur C. and Mildred A. (Quinn) Solem. He later grew up in Fraser Location and was a 1952 graduate of Chisholm High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957 and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He received his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management from MIT in Cambridge, Mass., in 1959. Quinn was united in marriage on Dec. 27, 1958, in Chisholm to Kathleen Margaret Kealy. Quinn and Kathleen settled in Philadelphia, where he worked as a computer programmer for Westinghouse, IBM and Univac. He went on to start his own computer consulting company and founded Mentor Associates in 1972. They then retired to Side Lake in 1996. Quinn loved his retirement years and was active in bocce ball, cribbage and was a fanatic about curling. He loved the lake, fishing and his family. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm, the Chisholm Curling Club, the Side Lake Bocce Ball League and was the founding member of the Little Notebook Society.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen M.; children, Kealy A. Solem of Holland, Pa., Quinn A. Jr. (Sherry) of Red Lion, Pa., Mara Solem-Ploeg (Oscar Ploeg) of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Taliesin and Rutger Ploeg; brother, Philip (Jackie) Solem of Bovey; sister, Marilyn (Vincent) Mager of Boulder Creek, Calif.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
James D. Sundstrom
James D. Sundstrom, 84, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes with Rev. Brian Birk officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. James D. Sundstrom, 84, of Hoyt Lakes died Friday, March 10, 2006, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.
He was born April 21, 1921, in Grandy, Minn., to Leonard and Anna (Sandin) Sundstrom. He attended country school near Grandy and in 1942 enlisted in the Army during World War II. He served in Normandy during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star. On Jan. 11, 1947, he married Dorothy Johnson near Grandy. The couple lived in Mora, Minn., where James worked in the drying plant and later in construction. The family traveled extensively along the North Shore working construction, the Minneapolis area working for Park Construction, and to the Lake Vermilion area for 19 years working as a heavy duty mechanic in the construction industry. The couple retired to Hoyt Lakes in 1994. James was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Timothy Robinson VFW Post in Hoyt Lakes.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Donald (Julee) Sundstrom of Virginia, Diane (Bruce) Hallada of Lakeland and Judy (Bert) Whittington of Cloquet; granddaughter, Nicole (Paul Ollila) Sundstrom of Mountain Iron; great-grandchild, Jonathan Ollila; and a stepgranddaughter, stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Gerald and Roger.

W. Clifford Nevala, 77, of Virginia, formerly of Embarrass, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.
He was born on July 25, 1928, in Embarrass, to Arthur and Lampi (Palo) Nevala and grew up there. He lived in Embarrass for the majority of his life.
Cliff had worked as a mechanic for Erie Mining Company for 14 years and from 1979 to 1997 for BMP&K of Eveleth as an air hydraulic mechanic.
Cliff is survived by his wife Phyllis of Virginia; seven stepchildren; and many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Dolores) Nevala of Embarrass; two sisters, Carol (Richard) Tonnancour of Clayton, Idaho, and Joan (Ellard) Krogstad of Antioch, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Lorrene Nevala of Laughlin, Nev.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Helen; one sister, Florence Oksa; and three brothers, Howard, Ervin and Larry; two stepsons; one stepgrandson; and one stepgranddaughter.
Mae E. Pickar

Mae E. Pickar, 85, of Babbitt went to be with her Lord surrounded by her three loving daughters and family on Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital.
She was born May 2, 1920, in Verndale, Minn., to Nels P. and Martha Elizabeth (Stratton) Andersen. Mae attended country school in Blue Grass, Minn., and later met her childhood sweetheart. On Nov. 29, 1942, she married Raymond Pickar in Fort Leonardwood, Mo. Mae and her husband owned and operated a farm near Nimrod, Minn., and started their family before moving to Babbitt in 1956. Mae was a compassionate energetic nurse’s aide at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital, retiring after 23 years of service. She was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Ladies Aid, Cribbage 15-2, Monday Morning Quilting for Lutheran World Relief, Thursday Afternoon Bowling, Gay 9-Tees and the Babbitt Senior Citizens. Mae was also an officer and a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #1539. Following her husband’s passing in 1990, Mae was able to live independently and maintain her home and yard for 15 years. Mae loved to quilt and each and every member of her family received one of these treasured memories.
Mae will be dearly missed by her three daughters, Karen (Dennis) Hansen of Hanover Park, Ill., Judy (Patrick) Tomlan of Wilmington, Del., and Diane (Peter) Pastika of Babbitt; nine grandchildren, Kerri, Scott, Stacey, Mike, Matt, Chris, Nick, Jeff and Joey; 12 great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews; and many dear friends.
Her parents; husband, Ray; son, Denny; and 11 siblings preceded Mae in death.

Frances M. Sikich, 87, of Eveleth died Friday, March 10, 2006, at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth.
She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Eveleth to Joseph and Frances (Marolt) Straynor. Frances graduated from Eveleth High School.
She is survived by a daughter, Geraldine (Sherman) Karakas Moen of Mahtomedi, Minn.; a son, Louis (Marcia) Karakas of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Kipp (Amy) and Kraig (Anissa) Karakas; great-grandchildren, Kierstin, Luke, Jacob, Elizabeth, Catherine, Grace Anne; and numerous nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Louis Karakas in 1955, Joseph Sikich in 1989; sister, Dorothy Altobell; and brothers, Joseph Straynor and Albert Straynor.

George L. Pogue, 81, of Duluth, died peacefully March 12, 2006, in St. Mary’s Hospice, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 1, 1924, to James and Gertrude Pogue in Hibbing. George graduated from Hibbing High School in 1942. He joined the Army and served in World War II until its end. Upon returning from Europe, he married Catherine Koss in 1946 and had four children. George worked for Monroe Calculating Machine Company and traveled around the tri-state area until his retirement in 1983. Throughout his life, his trumpet followed him, and his passion was in entertaining people with jokes, songs and music. Always the showman, George played in several bands over the years. Along with bowling, he was also a "tiger" in his own right when it came to the golf course, playing a round or two every chance he got. George also enjoyed dropping a line off the dock at the family cabin.
After the death of his wife, Catherine, George was blessed with his wife, Ellen Nelson, marrying in 1985.
Surviving George are wife and best friend, Ellen; son, Tom (Bobbie) of Chisholm; daughters, Peggy Savoy (Ron Larson) of Duluth, and Mary Olund of Virginia; step-daughters, Vickie (Jerry) Wotczak of Hermantown, Debbie (Steve) Walczak of Moose Lake; sisters, Audrey Prepodnik, and Mary Pogue of Hibbing; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Eunice Sandgren of Willow River, Dorothy Erickson of Askov; and brother-in-law, John (Sheila) Dahlgren of Esko.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Catherine; son, Joseph; sister-in-law, Bunny Edin; and brother-in-law, Don Dahlgren.
